OddBird Studio

Peter Pesce, Owner & Adam Pesce, Director of Coffee – Reunion Island Coffee

OddBird Studio is a collaboration of Sheridan Game Design students operating out of Oakville. The studio created a successful game, called Arrowheads, available to play on the multi-player platform “Steam.”

Now in their fourth and final year at Sheridan College, the studio is looking to graduate and locate OddBird in the Oakville/Halton area.

Their game, Arrowheads, won the Level Up Showcase in 2016 and the Entertainment Software Association of Canada’s National Student Competition in 2016.

Reunion Island Coffee is Canada’s largest roaster of coffee completely powered by renewable energy. They are a Certified B Corporation, meaning a company that incorporates social and environmental benefits into their definition of success as a business. Their Farm Development Fund provides farms with investment opportunities that support quality and sustainability. The company’s Columbia Las Hermosas Project collects funds that are donated annually to support school renovations, computer labs, and improved agricultural infrastructure in the community.

Karla Stephens-Tolstoy, Stand Up Speak Up Stand Up Speak Up is an advocacy-wear clothing company dedicated to raising awareness about social issues affecting teens and creating social change through fashion.

The Stand Up Speak Up podcast came out of a desire to tell the stories of those who had been ignored or neglected by conventional media, and has grown to have an impressive listener base.

Each design and episode focus on topics that are taboo, commonly swept under the rug and are difficult to talk about. StephensTolstoy has always been passionate about helping others, especially teens at risk but was frustrated at how reluctant some people are to see the truth behind these issues and what they can do to help. Stand Up Speak Up offers in-your-face fashion designs that are meant to spark conversations and help wearers to speak out about issues that are important to them in the hopes that those conversations could lead to more help and solutions.

Your Generosity Is The Reason I am Alive Today

I

wake up in the ICU at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) with no idea where I am. The concern in the eyes of my loved ones speaks volumes. Something is very wrong.

It’s hard not to panic but then I notice the doctors and nurses surrounding my bed. I know instinctively all these people are here to help me get better.

What happened to me? The last thing I remember is an intense pain in my head after I arrived at work. My legs swelled and turned white, my speech slurred, my eye drooped.

I was rushed to OTMH and it’s a good thing I was. I had developed a rare heart tumour which had dislodged, showering hundreds of blood clots through my body.

The clots restricted blood flow to my vital organs. They were so prevalent in my legs that tissue began to die within minutes.

Emergency surgery was my only hope.

I spent 13 hours in the OR and my family were told I would probably lose my legs.

With my organs shutting down and blood not flowing through my legs, my life hung in the balance. For two weeks, I lay in the ICU, intubated and hooked

up to a respirator, where I underwent daily dialysis for my failing kidneys.

When I finally did wake up, my family gently told me what happened, trying their best to comfort me.

Overall, I spent 10 months at OTMH including nine operations and six months in physiotherapy and outpatient rehabilitation therapy. Everywhere I went felt like home thanks to the amazing people who work here and the caring donors who generously give to the Oakville Hospital Foundation.

I’ll never forget the day I left OTMH. My husband and I drove straight to our daughter’s basketball game. I can still see the joy on her face as I walked in on my own two legs and she realized I was coming home. It’s a gift I will treasure all my life.

I hope you’ll give other patients a precious gift too – the gift of quality care and treatment so they too have the

chance to recover and go home to their families.

Donations to the Oakville Hospital Foundation will help support the women’s health initiative focused on raising $1.6 million for OTMH to meet women’s specialized health needs throughout their lives. Bay Street Experience With An Oakville Address In a recent meeting with Chris Coderre, at his Oakville Office, a couple in their early sixties had a list of questions they had prepared.

RedBit Development Finds Room to Grow in Oakville Mark Arteaga, a long-time Oakville resident and Silicon Halton community member, began RedBit Development in 2003 as an independent consultant.

Little by Little IC Finds Success with the Halton Region Small Business Centre In April 2017, the Halton Region Small Business Centre launched its Starter Company Plus program designed to assist Canadian entrepreneurs turn their business ideas into reality. Starter Company Plus provides participants with training and mentoring from top business consultants, along with advice from a panel of experienced professionals. After carefully considering 10 finalists for the program’s $4,500 grant, eight were selected to receive funding.

One of the eight finalists was Sarah Janson, founder of Little by Little IC. Janson’s desire to advocate for the importance of ethical and compassionate living gave rise to Little by Little IC. The company is a testament of the journey

Janson undertook to integrate mindful lifestyle choices in her own life and the lives of others. The ‘IC’ represents Janson’s quest to ‘I’nspire ‘C’ompassion with her line of cruelty-free apparel.

“The Halton Region Small Business Centre helped provide the tools and resources needed to begin my entrepreneurial journey,” says Janson.

“Although I had a multitude of expertise, I quickly discovered a learning curve was ahead, and that running a business is very different than running a department.”

Little by Little IC pays it forward by providing business support to new and growing plant-based businesses, as well as those who are dedicated to promoting animal welfare. With every purchase from Janson’s statement-driven line of compassionate apparel, eight per cent of

the proceeds are given back to animal advocacy and rescue organizations.

“The Halton Region Small Business Centre provided access to knowledgeable staff and professional mentors, guidance through the startup process, and the opportunity to participate in the Starter Company Plus program.” says Janson.

A Strong Sense of Community Linbrook School, Oakville’s only Independent Boys’ School, has created a name for itself as an exceptionally positive environment.

F

or families whose sons are enrolled, the school’s strong sense of community is greatly appreciated. Linbrook’s administrators and teachers have built a culture that emphasizes active participation and effective leadership among its students within a kind and caring atmosphere.

Many engaging activities, such as sports days, intramurals, sports tournaments, charity drives, field trips, reading buddy time, special theme days and evening socials contribute to the boys’ sense of belonging and love of school.

Furthermore, under the guidance of homeroom teachers, weekly assemblies are run by the boys in each grade and attended by the whole school; these special presentations aim to

They kick off the year with a “Welcome Back BBQ” that gives families an opportunity to meet all of the teachers and staff, explore the facilities, experience some of the clubs that occur at the school, and enjoy fantastic food. During the year, the PA hosts a new parents’ social, a family movie matinee, two Scholastic

book fairs, a Kris Kringle shop, donut mornings for moms and dads, and a staff appreciation day. An enthusiastic group of parent volunteers conclude the school year with a well-attended Family Fun Fair that is complete with rides, music, prizes and delicious treats! Everyone who attends the PA events experiences the school’s strong spirit, warm sense of community and appreciation for its students and their families.

The Linbrook community is extensive when you consider the educators, administrators, parents, volunteers and local organizations, but the foundation of this strong community is the boys.

Their fellowship, shared interests, positive energy and eagerness to learn are palpable and can be felt as soon as you walk into the beautiful school. Creating Canada’s Best Downtown Located an easy walk from Lake Ontario, Oakville’s historic downtown offers an enviable mix of destination retail, restaurants and services.

T

his picturesque district stretches along six blocks of Lakeshore Road. Design work for a new streetscape is currently in progress, with construction work scheduled to be phased in through the 2019–2020 period.

“Council and I are committed to investing in the sustainability and vibrancy of our community,” says Oakville Mayor Rob Burton.

“Downtown Oakville is the heart of our community, and the Lakeshore Road reconstruction project is an opportunity to ensure the viability of the area in the long-term.”

Completed in 2010, the Downtown Oakville Strategic Action Plan was

developed to guide the evolution of downtown Oakville over the next 20 years. In 2015, Council approved the Downtown Transportation and Streetscape Study with the goal to create the best downtown in Canada.

Through the reconstruction project, the town is reimagining the

downtown. Extensive research and public consultation have helped to shape the town’s plan to improve traffic, beautify streets, and improve pedestrian and cycle ways in the core.

The plan envisions a connected network of revitalized streets and

incorporates a number of progressive public realm initiatives.

New and enhanced tree-lined boulevards designed for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, will balance the needs for all modes of transportation while creating a pedestrian and bikefriendly environment.

Perspective The flexible design will facilitate street closures and access for special events and festivals, allowing downtown Oakville to build on the many activities it already hosts each year.

A two-metre marketing zone in front of each storefront will enable restaurants and retailers to spill out onto the sidewalk and use street space as part of their downtown presence.

Oakville is looking to the future by putting measures in place to incorporate smart city technologies into the revitalization. This September, Oakville hosted Smart City Vendor Day, a project to secure the expertise of local businesses to help the town implement and protect for smart city solutions during the construction work.

To balance new technology with Oakville’s historic charm, redevelopment will be guided by a set of urban design guidelines that reflect the traditional character of the main street.

The reimagined Commercial centre will benefit from a consistent suite of new furnishings – including benches, lighting, bollards, bicycle infrastructure

and litter receptacles – designed to create a unified public realm that is instantly recognizable as ‘downtown Oakville’.

A second phase of the redevelopment will focus on the Downtown Cultural Hub Study, with the renewal and enhancement of cultural hub facilities playing an important role in the realization of the town’s vision for a vibrant, active downtown that attracts residents and visitors.

Special attention will be given to Towne Square and Centennial Square.

Built in the 1980s, Towne Square provides a central gathering place for families and downtown patrons and is an important venue for festivals and events.

A refresh of the Town Square will be completed alongside the Lakeshore Road reconstruction.

Feasibility studies and plans are also underway for the transformation of Centennial Square, which houses the Central Library and the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts.

Promation Delivers World-Class Automation Solutions Mark Zimny, P.Eng. President & CEO of Promation, an Oakville based robotics company, measures his company’s success with just one metric: how many it employs.

T

he company’s revenues have doubled in two years, thanks to robust increases across all three of its divisions – automotive, nuclear and industrial.

“My job now is to double the double,” said Zimny, a professional mechanical engineer. “Hiring people is the simple answer. My measure of what I want to do is to double our employees.”

That would mean 240 employees working in two shifts.

The company is an integrator and manufacturer of high-quality tooling, automation, and robotic systems for some of the biggest companies in the world. Its systems are fully designed,

built and tested in Promation’s Brighton Road facility before they are disassembled and shipped to plants across North America and around the world.

“We are in the business of providing the tools to 21st-century factories,” said Zimny.

“Our corporate partners like SNC Lavalin, Honda, Toyota and Tesla take us all over the globe. When those kinds of companies return to you, you know you’re in the right business.”

The design and tooling of equipment used in the refurbishment of Ontario’s nuclear plants, including Bruce Power and Ontario Power Generation, will provide work for decades to come, he says.

“This is a huge market. There are billions of dollars being invested in these refurbishments. We are growing by leaps and bounds to keep up.”

Zimny has his eye on the next growth driver in additive manufacturing.

also the automotive culture of speed and efficiency. That’s a great value proposition to combine the best of those existing divisions.”

Promation earned both the Large Business of the Year award from the Oakville Chamber of Commerce and a Halton Employer of Choice Award in 2017.

Employees are Promation’s foremost asset, says Zimny. The company pays for their education, provides extensive training and fosters an environment where people are given autonomy and responsibility.

Zimny is a past winner of the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council award for mentoring newcomer professionals.

About one-quarter of Promation’s workforce are immigrants, just as Zimny is himself.

“They are very valuable members of our organization and a huge part of our growth strategy,” he said. “Diversity pays for us, both being across industries but also in ideas and thinking.”

He was born in Poland and is a thirdgeneration entrepreneur. He came to Canada with no money and “worked day and night” for engineering and manufacturing firms before deciding he would rather work around the clock for himself.

He started Promation in his basement in 1995, working in automotive. He expanded to nuclear 10 years later.

That was a critical move because it came at the beginning of a crippling slowdown in the auto sector. While some suppliers were going out of business, Promation managed to triple its revenues.

• Will — A will is simply a plan for distributing your assets to family members and other beneficiaries. If you were to die intestate (without a will), provincial laws would determine how your assets should be distributed — and there’s no guarantee that the end result would be what you would have chosen.
