Message from Jane Clohecy,

Chief Administrative Officer, Town of Oakville

Livability

and a strong economy have long been among Oakville’s most attractive features. They’re why industry-leading companies call Oakville home, because together business and people thrive in our community.

In 2022 Oakville was recognized in Site Selection Magazine as one of the top 20 regions of Canada’s Best Locations to invest for the fourth year in a row. The ranking in this international business publication, which covers corporate real estate and economic development, was based on Oakville’s healthy economy, reflected through significant investment and facility expansions at existing companies, as well as new company arrivals.

Businesses thrive here because we are focused on attracting new investment, while responding to the needs of our business community, and supporting the town’s retail and commercial districts.

Companies can realize the value and benefits of doing business in Oakville with the help of our Economic Development team. They offer support services to both new and existing businesses as they choose to locate, expand, or build in our community.

We provide enhanced service to priority non-residential building permit applications via a new approach to issuing permits, which sees each permit application treated as a project. Each project is assigned

to a dedicated team to ensure a timely approvals process and personal contact with staff to get people building and further enhance Oakville’s competitiveness for new investment. In 2021, three files were successfully supported through the program, generating key sector job growth and new industrial development.

Plans are also underway to accommodate future growth. Midtown Oakville is set to become a vibrant, people-oriented, mixed-use community. Once complete, the transformation will accommodate more than 13,000 residents and 7,000 jobs in an approximately 103 hectare area surrounding the Oakville GO Station. Over the next few decades Midtown will become an urban destination. One where people can live, work and play in dynamic neighbourhoods connected to the rest of Oakville through extended pedestrian, cycling, transit and street networks.

I encourage everyone to read the town’s Community Profile - Where Living Works, which can be easily found at invest.oakville.ca. It highlights all of the town’s attractive features, while providing some perspective on what makes Oakville Canada’s most livable town.

Sincerely, Jane Clohecy, CAO

Shaping Oakville’s Future Through Historic Match Initiative

Healthcareis in the midst of an

unprecedented transformation.

This decade will bring more change in medicine than we have seen in generations and the Oakville community is depending on Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) to keep pace.

As the need for local healthcare increases, OTMH’s healthcare teams are working hard to ensure they continue to be prepared for any circumstance. But they can’t do it alone.

That’s why Oakville Hospital Foundation has launched Oakville’s Flagship Families, an initiative that will bring together families united in their values of making an extraordinary impact

in Oakville for the hospital’s highest, most strategic priorities.

Support for the Flagship Families initiative — Oakville Hospital Foundation’s first leadership gift campaign in almost 10 years — will empower OTMH to advance their its vision to be a leading healthcare organization in the province offering integrated community hospital care. It is about investing in this world-class team of healthcare professionals, giving them the tools and resources they need to transform the community healthcare experience.

Over the past three decades, June and Ian Cockwell’s leadership philanthropy has enabled OTMH to invest in medical

equipment, innovation, and technology. Their gifts have empowered the hospital to make key equipment upgrades, launch innovative and impactful patient care programs, and inspire thousands of individuals, businesses, and community groups to elevate their giving.

Now, June and Ian Cockwell have made a new commitment to Oakville Hospital. To help spark the passion to give, they have pledged $15 million in match funding to usher in a new era of care at OTMH. This is not only the largest match gift ever made benefitting our hospital but it is also the largest gift in the history of Oakville. With more than $100 million to raise before 2030 to advance healthcare in the community, this $15 million match is a gamer-changer for philanthropy in the region.

Like other community hospitals, OTMH continues to navigate the extraordinary pressure from the COVID-19 pandemic; however, the focus is now shifting from pandemic response to important priorities key to recovery and revitalization.

“If there is anything these past two years have shown us, it’ is that access to a modern hospital with the latest equipment and technology, close to home, is more important than ever,” says Mary McPherson, CEO of the Oakville Hospital Foundation. “As OTMH prepares for the future and a new era of care, having the latest technology and equipment available at OTMH is essential to ensuring quality, world-class care close to home.”

Transformational philanthropy has the power to shape Oakville’s future and set in motion how OTMH can act on evolving priorities and respond to the latest innovations in healthcare. At every stage of Oakville’s history, donors have risen to the occasion and helped OTMH be the hospital it needs to be. As Oakville evolves, its hospital needs to continue to evolve with it.

Siemens Canada 110 Years in Canada

On August 29, 2022, Siemens Canada proudly celebrated 110 years of its presence in Canada. It all started in Montreal, where the first Canadian head office was officially opened in 1912.

From there, the journey of Siemens in Canada involved many significant milestones including the first modern light rail systems in North America in Edmonton in 1975, the infrastructure for the 1967 Expo in Montreal and the technology for Toronto’s SkyDome roof (now Rogers Centre).

Today, much of Siemens’ technology is focused on making Canada an even better place to live. Healthier, smarter buildings, a more sustainable transportation sector,

the energy transition and future-looking industry sector are at the heart of the company’s purpose.

During the pandemic Siemens used the opportunity with many employees working safely from home to convert a substantial portion of its Oakville, Ontario headquarters into a showcase for these technologies that address climate change, the 4th Industrial revolution and digitalization across different sectors.

As part of anniversary celebrations, Siemens invited guests including customers and Oakville Mayor Rob Burton to experience the new headquarters and co-creation space. Siemens colleagues demonstrated everything from IoT building applications to its electrical grid infrastructure portfolio and a Smartflower solar microgrid – a visible showpiece in front of the Oakville building that is visible from the QEW.

Siemens has been a proud corporate citizen of Oakville for more than 10

years and is engaged in the community in a variety of ways. A partnership with Tree Canada and Conservation Halton have made it possible for employee volunteers to plant almost 5,000 trees in the town over the past decade,

Since its inception Medcan has been adding programs and services, as well as staying at the forefront of healthcare innovations such as comprehensive testing to detect early-stage disease, personalized genetic assessments, and virtual care.

For the past 13 years, Medcan has been named one of “Canada’s Best Managed Companies.”

contributing to Oakville’s goal of a 40% tree canopy by 2057. Many local food banks, toy drives, animal shelters and other non-profit groups have also benefitted from Siemens employee-led corporate citizenship programs.

Policaro

Group is a multifaceted enterprise focused on the future of mobility, retail business and software solutions and is committed to customer service and the enduring belief in the value of community. Exclusively automotive luxury, the decision to open a Porsche Centre in Oakville in 2013 was easy.

Oakville’s unparalleled quality of life and proximity to Toronto has attracted a community of highly educated, highly skilled, and affluent residents, primarily in occupations such as management and sciences. Exercise without feeling like it’s exercise: Research shows regular physical activity plays a protective role against dementia. Sounds simple, but walking, running, biking, even taking the stairs all contribute to illness prevention, including dementia.

Spend time in nature either alone or with others: Studies show that getting outside helps lower blood pressure, heart rate and risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Take a brisk walk in a park, or in your neighborhood, and bring along a family member, or friend to join you.

If you like your work, do it for as long as you can: A recent study suggests that early retirement is associated with an increased mortality risk. Working, even part-time, keeps your mind engaged, which helps promote an improved health span. People have been shown to benefit from learning a new skill or engaging in a new hobby later in life.

Midtown Oakville – An Exciting Transformation to Spur Economic Opportunities

Midtown is an ambitious, future-forward vision to build a vibrant, selfsufficient live, work, and play community within a key rail transportation corridor in the Town of Oakville. The plan is central to the town’s ability to accommodate provincial population growth targets and create business opportunities leading up to 2051 and beyond.

Midtown will be a transitsupported, walkable, mixed-use community of tall buildings, open spaces, recreational and retail amenities that will drive the future of economic growth in Oakville. A critical piece of the town’s economy for the next generation and beyond, Midtown prioritizes active modes of transportation, reduces the distance necessary to travel between home and work, a significant step in creating a complete urban community.

The Midtown Oakville Urban Growth Centre covers an area of about 103 hectares surrounding the Oakville GO Station – the busiest in the GO Transit network, outside of Union Station – and is bounded by

the QEW, Chartwell Road, Cornwall Road and Sixteen Mile Creek. Metrolinx identifies Midtown as an anchor mobility hub, integrating express rail, regional rail, rapid transit and local bus services.

Midtown, currently home to 900 residents and 3,000 jobs, was among 25 provincially-designated urban growth centres identified in 2006. Through an Official Plan Amendment (OPA), Halton Region has provided a target of 65 per cent residents – totalling 13,300 people – and 35 per cent jobs – around 7,300 jobs – for Midtown.

Full build-out, expected to take more than 20 to 30 years, will meet at least the minimum density target of 200 residents and jobs combined per hectare.

strategic location.

unique features.

The connectivity, walkability, accessibility and sustainability inherent in the Vision for Midtown will become a model for the Town of Oakville and has the potential to serve

as a blueprint for other communities across the GTA.

Its mixed-use neighbourhoods will connect to the rest of Oakville, the Halton Region, the GTA and beyond through high-order transit connections, and enhancing pedestrian and cycling networks.

The community will add to and amplify Oakville’s already thriving economy built around a long list of advantages that Oakville offers, including its strong talent base fed by Sheridan College, its unparalleled quality of life and incredible connectivity, thanks to two GO stations and ready access to Highways 407, 403 and QEW.

Key sectors of growth include professional services; life sciences; digital media, ICT, and film; and advanced manufacturing. As a critical piece of the town’s economy, Midtown will provide an opportunity for continued investment and growth in these sectors.

Midtown will feature a high-quality public realm and various community spaces for its residents, workers and visitors, including parks and open

spaces, urban commons, streetscapes, courtyards, pocket courts, urban squares, walkways, and bikeways.

Retail spaces are integral to the quality of the street life, and will be integrated with new buildings, combined with office space and residential units on the upper floors, including affordable and rental units. To meet density targets, plans call for extending building heights offering a seamless experience for businesses, residents and visitors.

The plan for Midtown has been shaped by community input and feedback and more public information and engagement opportunities are coming up this fall to further inform the OPA for Council’s consideration in the first half of 2023.

Midtown Oakville is not only about reimagining urban living, but also a movement towards more sustainable development and town planning. We’re building a thriving community of the future, and welcome partners and investors to help write this exciting story with us, together.
