or one of the youngest, most educated communities in Canada, working smarter isn’t just a goal — it’s a necessity. For several years, Milton has been integrating smart initiatives and leveraging technology to make the community more efficient and sustainable, while attracting the types of businesses and labour force that fuel innovation.

As the Town continues to tell these stories of innovation, behind the scenes Milton has been investing in energy-saving solutions and intuitive technology to keep its community safe and better connected. The Town recognizes that building a more intelligent community is a long-term goal that involves both small and large initiatives, but collectively, all its efforts focus on the same outcome — improving the overall quality of life in Milton.

Some of Milton’s innovative initiatives include upgrades to wi-fi in the downtown core, improvements to digital customer service, interactive GIS and smart sensor integration, data-driven emergency service enhancements, and energy-efficient solutions for community facilities.

Recently the Town partnered with Kitchener-based cloud traffic management and analytics company, Miovision, to implement their TrafficLink service. The technology

monitors traffic patterns along a key downtown corridor, and uses that data to reduce congestion and improve pedestrian mobility. For Milton, the opportunity to measure and analyze the return on investment (ROI) and impacts of this technology has been of critical importance to understanding how smart city initiatives can improve the quality of life for Miltonians.

As a regional hub for local businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs, the Milton Education Village Innovation Centre has also been instrumental in attracting and developing ventures to enhance smart initiatives in the community. Through partnerships with organizations like 3OpenLabs and Tech Data, the Centre is enabling pilot projects for smart vehicle tracking and inviting the expertise in artificial intelligence, IoT, and open data to grow within the community.

As the Town welcomes leading academic and research institutions like Wilfrid Laurier University and Conestoga College, opportunities to explore and participate in projects that will enhance Milton’s portfolio of smart city initiatives will continue to expand.

Coupled with the fact that Milton is centrally located along Ontario’s Innovation Corridor, growing smart is a natural evolution for this community.

Find Your Balance in a Place of Possibility Imagine the view from your window was a vista of the Niagara Escarpment.

I

magine, just for minute, what it would be like to end your work-day and be home within minutes, not hours. To stop at one of several local conservation areas for a hike, bike or outdoor yoga class, while on your route home. For many, this sounds idyllic and unattainable - but for others, this is the definition of balance.

This year, Milton ran a marketing campaign called “We are the Story” aimed at discovering local business and entrepreneurial success stories within their community. With the Niagara Escarpment’s UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve as its backdrop, Milton’s location at the centre of Ontario’s Innovation Corridor offers a perfect mix of work and play. In fact, the 2017 Halton Region Business Conditions Survey identified that 40% of businesses in Milton hired additional staff over the past year and 50% ranked the region’s quality of life as more favourable than the rest of the GTHA. While Milton continues to experience substantial population growth – 31% between 2011 and 2016 – the quality of life for residents has increased at a similar pace with recent public and private investments in recreation/ entertainment facilities and urban amenities, such as Conservation Halton’s Giant’s Rib Park, the Town of Milton’s Sherwood Community Centre, and Woodbine Mohawk Raceway.

In a recent survey of their employees, the company found that many of their associates live in Milton and cited the proximity to nature, a small town atmosphere, safe neighborhoods, and “a great place to raise a family” were key reasons for living in Milton.

Laurier Milton: A decade in the making STORY BY KAREN KAWAWADA

I

t’s big news that has been a decade in the making. Wilfrid Laurier University is opening a campus in Milton.

Laurier and the Town of Milton have been working together to bring postsecondary education to the community since 2008. In 2014, the town agreed to give Laurier 150 acres of land, valued at $50 million, if the province approved a campus in Milton. Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning came on board as a strategic partner to broaden the academic offerings.

Since the successful funding announcement, Laurier has been eagerly planning the academic programming for this fast-growing, forward-looking community.

“Milton is an ideal location for a Laurier campus,” says Deborah Dubenofsky, Laurier’s vice-president: finance and administration, who is serving as senior project lead for the

Milton campus. “Situated midway along the Toronto-Waterloo innovation corridor and not far from Laurier’s existing campuses, it’s a young, fastgrowing, diverse, prosperous and welleducated community.”

A Comprehensive Education Village The new Laurier campus will be the crown jewel of a 400-acre “Milton Education Village” (MEV), where students and community members can live, work, play, study, stay healthy and enjoy nature.

Located adjacent to the Niagara Escarpment, between Tremaine, Derry and Britannia roads, the site will eventually include a research/ business park, retail amenities, residential developments, pedestrianfriendly urban streetscapes, natural trails and bike pathways, as well as a transit hub. The existing Mattamy National Cycling Centre — the velodrome built for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games — will be among the athletic and

recreational facilities available to students, faculty and staff.

As part of the larger site plan, the Milton Education Village (MEV) Innovation Centre, currently located on Industrial Drive, will also be relocate to the new site.

Milton students can begin their Laurier studies in September 2019 at a temporary location within the Milton Education Village Innovation Centre.

As permanent facilities are built, the campus is expected to grow to 2,000 Laurier students within five to 10 years,

with additional intake for Conestoga students. The first permanent campus building is expected to open in 2021/22 on the MEV lands, in time for the first cohort of students to complete their degree in the new facility.

“From our successes in Brantford, we know how to build a university site from the ground up and share the skills and knowledge of our faculty and staff across campuses to create truly collaborative, multi-campus environments,” says Deborah MacLatchy, Laurier’s president and vice-chancellor.

A fresh academic vision Milton’s new campus will focus on STEAM – science, technology, engineering, arts and math.

In the first few years, Milton campus students will have a choice of four programs: Computer Science, Data Science, Environmental Science and Honours Science.

Plans are also in the works to start Laurier’s first engineering programs, a milestone for the university. For Laurier, one of the most exciting things about the new campus is developing programs in environmental engineering and software engineering.

“They’re nice offshoots of computer science, data science and environmental science and these areas are predicted to have a job surplus in the next five to 10 years, meaning that there will be more jobs than job seekers in these fields,” says Laurier Associate Professor Bruce McKay, who was recently named the academic lead for the development of programs in Milton.

Hands on learning Right from the campus’s beginnings, there will be a strong emphasis on experiential learning. Some opportunities will develop from the interim location in the MEV Innovation Centre, where a number of tech startup enterprises are incubating.

“These businesses are already interested in partnering with Laurier and providing placements for students,”

The experiential learning opportunities may include field trips, community service-learning, coop placements and a range of types of classroom-workplace partnerships.

Student entrepreneurship and social innovation projects may also be supported.

With its location in a stunning natural area recognized as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the Milton campus will put strong emphasis on sustainability and the environment.

“Imagine a student interested in environmental engineering who has an opportunity to work and study in the pristine Greenbelt in Milton and then go to Waterloo or Brantford to study urban environmental issues – you can just see the advantages for students in our multi-campus offering,” says Dubenofsky.

The strong scientific focus doesn’t mean the A in STEAM – arts – will be neglected.

“There will be a core of arts courses that will foster the development of communication skills, critical thinking skills, cultural competencies – transferable skills that are in high demand by employers,” says McKay.

Indigenous learning

Another priority for all Laurier’s campuses is to enhance Indigenous education. To that end, the university has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation.

“Our goal is to establish a centre of excellence for Indigenous-based learning and sharing,” says Dubenofsky. “We’re very excited to have our Indigenization goals brought to Milton and to consider how we can integrate them comprehensively into science-based programs.”

Alumni and the first cohort The first cohort of students beginning studies in Milton in September 2019 will be unique. Though they will have access to a full range of services, they will be a smaller group with a chance to put their stamp on the new campus.

“This is going to be of particular interest to trailblazing, pioneering students who are interested in creating a vibrant new approach,” says Dubenofsky.

“In return, they’re going to have an innovative, intimate program designed with them in mind.”

“This will be transformational both for Laurier and for Milton,” says Dubenofsky. “We’re so excited to be moving forward, making our big dreams into reality.”

Milton - A Place of Possibility When Mark Sherman of Lil 3D Printing began developing the idea for his new disruptive 3D scanning technology, he knew he needed to find a place where he could not only build a nine-foot tall portable scanning unit, but also find a flexible workspace that would accommodate and adapt with his changing business needs. Living in Milton for over a decade, Sherman chose the Milton Education Village (MEV) Innovation Centre to set-up shop.

Keeping Costs Low & Space Flexible His decision to move into the Centre happened when Sherman realized that the connections he could make there would enhance the development of the back-end software needed to launch his venture.

While he worked through the research and design (R&D) phases of creating

a new cost-effective, turn-key business of 3D scanning units, the benefits of working within an Innovation Centre began to pay-off. “Staff had a fundamental understanding of my need for flexible space and cost-savings,” said Sherman. “Working from the Innovation Centre gave me the ability to move within the space, as needed, to help control my costs in the early R&D stages of my business.“ As Sherman worked with a global team on software development, he received support from the Centre’s business experts and staff to keep his project and plans on track.

Tap into a Diverse Community of Potential Partners & Expertise For entrepreneurs, snags in every stage of development and financing their ideas are only some of the challenges they must tackle in order to succeed.

For many small business owners and entrepreneurs, it is the struggles with the isolation that comes from going it alone that often catch them by surprise.

Working with other entrepreneurs in a collaborative environment can help with this type of isolation, and even create opportunities for unlikely partnerships.

Through the Centre, Sherman found an ally in Omar Silva-Fulchi, owner and head engineer of Robo-Geek, a company that teaches programming, electronics, and robotics. Silva-Fulchi helped Sherman to pilot and prepare his software for market, providing invaluable expertise that Sherman may otherwise have struggled to find outside of the Centre.

Sherman’s story is a familiar ones, says Kevin Samra, Manager, MEV Innovation Centre. He believes this Centre brings together a diverse community of potential experts and partners ready and willing to collaborate on projects. “Working here you’re part of a community that’s truly invested in your success.”

Halton Region Small Business Centre staff In addition to collaborations between tenants, local businesses and regional partners, the Centre provides sector-specific learning opportunities. They are focused on creating new opportunities to bring together both large and small businesses, in order to engage decision-makers and entrepreneurs in solving their toughest industry challenges together. The Centre has also successfully attracted partnerships with tech companies, like global corporation TechData to advance projects and enhance

expertise in the areas of IoT and Artificial Intelligence.

“Our goal is to help educate and bring expertise into this community,” Samra says, adding that because the centre is part of Milton’s economic development program, it strives to reach beyond the businesses and individuals who work out of its space. “We see the Centre as a conduit for entrepreneurs to come and get the resources, guidance, and support they need from our staff and partners to take their businesses to the next level.”

Every Child Deserves to Smile Smilezone Foundation’s mission is to transform areas (“Zones”) in hospitals and other healthcare centres in order to improve the lives of children facing illness

T

he idea of Smilezone started when Adam Graves, former professional National Hockey League player and Scott Bachly, CEO of Bachly Construction were approached to make a financial contribution to the construction of a local hospital. The request made Adam and Scott realize they wanted to make a difference, not only in their community, but also in communities across the country. As fathers themselves, Adam and Scott wanted to do something that would help children facing health challenges as they have witnessed the obstacles facing families with sick children. They wanted to give kids a place to experience a break from the day-to-day challenges they face; a place, quite simply, that would put a smile on a child’s face.

This determination led to the creation of the Smilezone Foundation in 2012.

The idea behind Smilezone Foundation is simple: Transform spaces in healthcare centres to give children, siblings, and their families an opportunity to smile, no matter what circumstances they face!.

Smilezone Foundation transforms hospital and healthcare spaces so they are comforting and fun for kids receiving

treatment, helping to make their days a little brighter.Visiting a Smilezone is something that a child and their family can look forward to, helping to ease the anxiety of being in a hospital or treatment facility. Smilezones can be created in waiting rooms, treatment rooms, playrooms, or custom patient care spaces.

Smilezones are custom built to suit the specific needs of children and families at each healthcare facility they partner with. These features often include fresh paint and kid-friendly murals; technology and entertainment units such as televisions, iPads, video games, and music items; sensory activities and games to engage children of all abilities; custom furniture, cabinetry and storage; and a lot more!

Transformations take place over a single weekend, so that children, families and staff are surprised by the new Smilezone spaces on Monday morning!

As of 2018, the Foundation has transformed 200 Smilezones in over 30 communities across Ontario. Over 146,000 children and families across the province use Smilezones on an annual basis.

Smilezones & ErinoakKids On August 28th, 2018, Smilezone Foundation celebrated the grand opening of three new Smilezones at ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment & Development in Brampton, ON. Smilezone Ambassador and international pop superstar Alessia Cara helped cut the ribbon to the new Smilezones, with more than 150 children, families, and staff at the Centre for the unveiling.

As part of Smilezone Foundation’s mission, ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment & Development now boasts a refreshed and welcoming main reception area featuring interactive projection flooring, a newly painted Respite Wing displaying bright murals, and a

music-themed Youth Room. The treatment centre’s new Smilezones create relaxed and fun atmospheres designed to make children feel comfortable and confident during therapy while complementing the extraordinary care delivered by the Centre’s dedicated inter-professional teams.
