This is Milton Milton, Ontario may be Canada’s best-kept secret.

C

elebrating 160 years since incorporation, the town – named after British poet John Milton – was founded as a mill town and farming community in the 1830s. Today, its attractive mix of historic charm and state-of-theart facilities, location in the heart of the Toronto-Waterloo innovation corridor, and expansive green spaces have made Milton one of the fastestgrowing communities in Canada for more than 10 years.

Between the 2006 and 2011 census, the population of Milton grew by an astounding 57 per cent. With a current population of more than 110,000, the community boasts one of the youngest and most educated workforces in the province.

More than 70 per cent of Milton’s residents have completed postsecondary education.

Milton’s proximity to the 400-series highways, rail links, and international airports, as well as the municipality’s commitment to economic development, have all helped drive Milton’s dynamic growth. Milton’s population is expected to reach 235,000 by 2031.

The Sherwood Community Centre and Library will include a satellite library branch, two ice pads, an aquatic centre and multi-purpose rooms, with doors expected to open in 2019.

Named one of the Top 100 festivals in the province by Festivals and Events Ontario, the Downtown Milton Street Festival is always a summer highlight. Laurier keen to bring academic excellence to the Town of Milton MILTON — Wilfrid Laurier University and the Town of Milton continue to work toward establishing a postsecondary site in this vibrant and fast-growing community.

A

s a leader in multi-campus, multi-community education, Laurier is a comprehensive university known for excellence in teaching and research, as well as a culture that inspires lives of leadership and purpose.

Last fall, Maclean’s magazine ranked Laurier No. 1 in its category for student satisfaction. Much of the credit goes to the university’s outstanding faculty. Here are just a few of the exceptional professors who contribute to Laurier’s reputation for academic excellence.

Sunny Wang How many sheets of tissue should be in a box of Kleenex? How many close friends do you really have on social media?

These are questions Laurier Professor Sunny Wang asks students to solve as

part of a process she loves to watch unfold: the realization that statistics and big data hold immense power.

“I’m proud to be a data scientist,” says Wang. “From climate change to biomedical research, everybody is trying to make data-driven decisions — big data is a very vibrant and exciting field.”

Wang, who studied in China until she pursued her PhD in Canada, is an associate professor in Laurier’s Department of Mathematics. She calls it a privilege to develop learning tools that help understand what big data is trying to tell us.

“I’m a very curious individual,” says Wang. “I like to study all different types of data to extract useful information from all of the uncertainties — I love the challenge of developing proper approaches for analyzing large scale data and making informed conclusions observations.”

Wang has conducted research in health, business, economics and finance related fields. She has analyzed the diet and physical activities of students in Nova Scotia. She has contributed to a nine-year study on mother and infant skin-to-skin contact. She has been nowcasting the Canadian inflation rate using oil prices and the consumer price index. And, she has looked at the vulnerability of Canadian charitable organizations using their financial information.

“Keeping up with the newest techniques in my field benefits not only myself, but also my research students, who can see their own research work as meaningful,” says Wang.

She supervises graduate students and offers research assistantships to students interested in developing statistical learning and data-mining techniques.

“At the beginning, students have little knowledge about the power of statistics,” she says. “I find really unique ways to show them how statistics and data analysis is a tool that everyone can use to make better decisions.”

Scott Smith “I can vividly remember it — it just didn’t seem right,” says Scott Smith, professor in Laurier’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, in reference to an early childhood memory of garbage lining a ditch in

his hometown of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Since then, Smith knew what he wanted to do with his life — and he has dedicated his career to researching aquatic systems and environmental regulations.

Smith teaches chemistry, supervises students, and provides them with research opportunities linked to his own projects.

“As an experimental scientist, I look at issues such as establishing safe and appropriate limits for metals, nutrients and the discharge of different pollutants in water,” he says.

While Smith has conducted fieldwork across the globe, he does virtual fieldwork from his lab in Waterloo, with samples of seawater, estuarine water, fresh water, bog water and wastewater that are shipped to him from around the world.

“You have to think you’re making a difference and improving the world because of your contributions,” he says.

“That makes the hard work worth the effort.”

Smith and his lab have found success by making contributions to important pieces of regulation. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s draft criteria for marine copper draws heavily on his work, as does the design of modern wastewater treatment plants, which are now constructed differently in order to maximize phosphorous removal based on Smith’s work at Laurier.

M I LT O N sacrificing meritocracy and that’s really important,”says Ghose. “We shouldn’t really be talking about this as a means of ‘helping’ women because it implies there is something missing and that women are somehow behind in some way.”

Ghose says that the data shows quite the opposite.

“Women who do succeed in science, those who are successful, tend to be twice as good as men who may not have had to face the same challenges.”

For the all success he has had, Smith is quick to praise Laurier students.

“From Laurier’s undergraduate students to post-doctoral fellows, they’re critical to the science,” he says. “I might be modelling and interpreting, but our science students make the measurements and drive the research forward. If it weren’t for them, I wouldn’t accomplish nearly as much.”

Shohini Ghose She has been called Laurier’s “quantum woman.”

A renowned physicist, Shohini Ghose is an award-winning professor who researches quantum information science, which explores how nature behaves at the tiniest levels.

Ghose teaches in Laurier’s Department of Physics and Computer Science, and this year, a group of her students were successful in writing programs to run on IBM’s quantum processor.

As founding director of Laurier’s Centre for Women in Science (WinS), Ghose is also a champion of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

WinS provides opportunities such as annual scholarships and grants to support outstanding female students, and research about gender issues in STEM. “When we have these programs or special positions for women, let’s say in academia or grants or support systems for women who want to start their own businesses, you’re not

John Abraham Is the world coming unhinged?

From identity based conflict and global financial volatility to the irreversible damage caused by climate change, we might be veering towards the brink.

What can one person do about such global challenges?

These are the questions Professor John Abraham asks Laurier students, as they

explore how global processes, cultures and communities interact with each other.

Abraham, who was raised in Dubai, teaches in the Department of Global Studies. He believes that part of the solution can be found through social entrepreneurship and social innovation.

“Governments and the markets have made great strides in addressing many challenges in the last 70 years but there are particular problems that have proven harder to crack,” he says.

“Social innovations like microfinance and community-based conservation have shown a great deal of promise in addressing such problems over a short period of time.”

Social entrepreneurship combines deep empathetic understandings of social challenges with the organizational capacity, entrepreneurial skills and financial sustainability to make a lasting and positive impact.

At Laurier, Abraham champions the concept of social innovation through the CityStudio partnership with the City of Waterloo.

CityStudio Waterloo is an innovation hub where, among other activities, students participate in a 14-week experiential learning course. They work with city staff and the community to co-create solutions that support the city’s strategic priorities and community needs.

“Waterloo has transformed into this thriving knowledge and highpowered tech economy,” he says. “Cities that undergo this kind of shift often experience substantial change in a short period of time — we’re seeing that in the local real estate market. But there are also intractable social challenges that emerge.”

Abraham says that social innovation emphasizes understanding large complex problems and identifying leverage points to produce better and more desirable outcomes.

“It’s exciting that we’re having students engage complex community issues in constructive ways,” he says.

“What’s more exciting is the emphasis that Laurier’s pedagogy is placing on greater engagement with each other and activities outside of the classroom.”

“We’re shaping students who are really prepared to act in the global knowledge economy.”

Vibrant, Diverse, Complete Community It’s no secret that Milton’s high quality of life and incredible amenities have attracted a very special population of young, highly educated individuals and families to call the community home.

With access to growing pool of talent, continued investment in community infrastructure, and future plans in progress to bring post-secondary learning to Milton, it’s no wonder the Town has experienced such exponential growth.

It’s all part of the Milton’s vision to build a complete community, one that is economically strong for years to come. Over the next few years, the Town is moving forward with a number of transformational projects that will continue to shape and enhance life in Milton.

Plans for an urban park, totaling almost 300 acres at the foot of the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO world biosphere, are beginning to take shape.

The urban park will form a natural gateway linking Conservation Halton’s incredible waterfalls, ski hills, parks, trails, and opportunities for outdoor learning to several community assets.

Milton’s landmark park will afford a multitude of opportunities for residents and visitors to get outside and explore, with play features designed to complement and enhance the natural landscape, and sports fields and picnic

areas integrated into the green space.

The park will boast extensive trails networks to provide residents with direct access to the Bruce Trail – Canada’s oldest and longest footpath, stretching from Niagara to Tobermorey.

This expansive 300 acre urban park is an investment in the design of a complete community, fostering the balanced development of high quality amenities and outdoor spaces to match the population growth, and meet the needs and wants of the community.

The park will also create linkages to two strategic projects currently in the works to drive economic growth and provide opportunities for lifelong learning; the Downtown Milton revitalization and the Milton Education Village.

Anchored at the East end by the Milton Centre for the Arts, a community hub of arts and cultural activity, and at the west end by the proposed urban park, Milton’s historic downtown core is a thriving centre for community events, seasonal farmer’s markets, shops and restaurants.

A comprehensive Downtown Study is currently underway, providing a roadmap for a revitalization of the core that will protect the existing heritage, create a civic square with a strong arts presence, and foster a vibrant, engaging public realm that will be a gathering space for the entire community.

The urban park will also create linkages between downtown Milton, the Escarpment trails, and the

Milton Education Village (MEV), a comprehensively-planned, 400-acre neighbourhood that is currently home to the Mattamy National Cycling Centre, and will be the future location of Milton’s post-secondary site, the MEV Innovation Centre, a transit hub, student and residential housing, and retail and commercial services.

The vision of the MEV began in 2008 with a Memorandum of Understanding between Wilfrid Laurier University and the Town of Milton, with the goal to bring a post-secondary campus to Milton. More than eight years later, those dreams are finally becoming a reality.

In October of 2016, Milton celebrated the Province’s announcement of a postsecondary site in Milton and the Town continues to support Laurier, together with partner Conestoga College, as they work through the provincial process for the Milton site.

Post-secondary learning in Milton will focus on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM), and will be an investment in the community that will create knowledgebased job opportunities and job growth for Milton’s highly-educated workforce.

Milton truly is a place of possibility, with a very special population of residents and businesses that have chosen to call Milton home. Milton’s story of growth is the story of the development of a complete community, reflecting Milton’s rich natural heritage, vibrant cultural diversity and spirit of innovation.

Milton’s innovation ecosystem strengthened through regional partnerships

T

he Milton Education Village (MEV) Innovation Centre marked a milestone on March 30, 2017 when Haltech Regional Innovation Centre and Halton Region Small Business Centre officially opened partner offices onsite.

The event brought together key stakeholders of Milton’s innovation ecosystem, including Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr and Halton Region Director of Economic Development, John Davidson, Haltech CEO & President, Rina Carlini, as well as partners from Wilfrid Laurier University, and the local business community.

“The opening of these regional partner offices in the Innovation Centre is an exciting milestone in support of this initiative ecosystem, providing a consolidated, multi-tiered approach to entrepreneurial and small business support services that will foster Milton’s knowledge economy,” said Milton Mayor Gord Krantz.

As the longest-serving mayor of a major municipality in Canada, Krantz has seen tremendous change in Milton over his 36- years in office.

A community steeped in tradition and history, the town is also home to innovative and growing businesses like Amazon and Enable Education.

For more than a decade, Milton has been recognized as one of the fastestgrowing municipalities in Canada. Its quality of life and location in the heart of the Toronto-Waterloo Innovation Corridor have attracted one of the youngest and most-educated populations in Ontario.

Milton has embraced these young, dynamic, educated and entrepreneurial residents as an important community asset, and is proactively fostering growth in the local knowledge economy.

Launched in 2014, the MEV Innovation Centre is an important first step towards realizing the Town’s vision for the Milton Education Village

– a 400-acre comprehensively planned neighbourhood that will integrate post-secondary education together with residential, commercial, and recreational uses.

The MEV Innovation Centre offers everything from flexible co-working space to private office suites, as well as business services, education, and training, with a focus on fostering an entrepreneurial culture of innovation for business start-up and incubation.

Originally developed in partnership between the Town of Milton and Wilfrid Laurier University, the Halton Region Small Business Centre and Haltech have also been key strategic partners since the very beginning.

The new Small Business Centre office will make it easier for Milton residents to access valuable services within the Innovation Centre, including complimentary one-on-one business consultations for those interested in learning more about what it takes to start a new business, or grow an existing one.

Strengthening ties with Haltech though a permanent onsite office, Haltech’s wide range of free services include advice on how to attract investment and accelerate innovation, commercialization, access to funding opportunities, and referrals to professional services.

In addition to providing a foundation for success through flexible office space and business support services, the MEV Innovation Centre gives entrepreneurs the chance to ignite new ideas through networking and collaboration.

Since opening, it has attracted a wide range of users, from robotics programming and remote health care technology, to software and app developers. The Centre’s boardroom and event spaces are also a popular destination for local and regional networking groups and business meetings.

Robo-Geek Inc. is one of ten businesses in residence that currently call the MEV Innovation Centre home.

The company offers courses in programming, electronics, and robotics to children from Grades 1 through 12.

Through hands-on workshops, after school programs, and summer camps all held on-site at the Innovation Centre, the company is helping to inspire and educate the next generation of engineers and creative thinkers.

Tech4Life Enterprises is another MEV Innovation Centre-based company whose reach extends well beyond Halton Region.

Founded in 2010, this sociallymotivated, research and design company specializes in telemedicine and point-ofcare devices, with the goal of improving access to care in the developing world.

Their flagship product, MDConsults, is already the world’s fastest-growing

HIPAA compliant telemedicine platform. This innovative technology solution harnesses the power of mobile phones to connect patients in rural and remote areas with specialists in urban centres for diagnosis, empowering community-based health providers and patients to manage their care without having to travel.

Robo-Geek and Tech4Life are prime examples of the exciting things that can happen within Milton’s innovation ecosystem. With plans to bring a Wilfrid Laurier University site to Milton in the coming years, the synergies between the university and access to entrepreneurial training at the MEV Innovation Centre will only continue to grow.

Halton Region Small Business Centre: Supporting small business owners and entrepreneurs to succeed Are you looking to start a small business, manage or grow your existing business? The Halton Region Small Business Centre offers the tools, training, and expertise to guide your business in the right direction at any stage.

he Halton Region Small Business Centre is part of a network of 57 Small Business Enterprise Centres (SBECs) across Ontario, committed to providing small business owners and entrepreneurs with the resources they need to meet their small business goals.

Small business owners and entrepreneurs in Halton Region are encouraged to access our programs and services, including: • free business consulting services; • free programs and information sessions such as Getting Started; • paid seminars and events throughout the year, with topics ranging from Writing a Business Plan to Financial Basics; • mentoring and grant programs, such as Summer Company and Futurpreneur for entrepreneurial youth, as well as Starter Company Plus for entrepreneurs of all ages; and • a Resource Centre that provides templates, forms and links to additional information to help small business owners succeed.

The Small Business Centre is also responsive to local and global trends in business development and entrepreneurship.

The Centre’s recent partnership with Haltech is supporting businesses and entrepreneurs to be wellpositioned to succeed in transforming technological innovations into thriving ventures.
