The Genomics Revolution

A

ny company who depends on biological processes and the environment needs to understand the complex ecosystems in which they operate — right down to the DNA. And that’s where genomics comes in.

Genomics is the powerful biotechnology that combines genetics, biology and computer science in a way that unlocks the DNA code found within every living thing. It’s a cutting-edge technology that has become exponentially cheaper and more accessible over the last decade. This has increased its uptake in a range of important sectors, including human health, agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, mining, energy and, more recently, the environment.

The insights provided by DNA-based technologies are helping to drive innovations throughout the bioeconomy.

In agriculture, genomics is improving livestock performance and leading to increased crop yields, healthier soils, and plants that are more drought resistant and pest resistant. In aquaculture, genomics is enhancing breeding programs for finfish and shellfish alike, by allowing companies to select for elite performance in terms of growth rate, disease resistance and tolerance to changing water temperatures.

Genomics is also becoming a powerful element in the environmental toolkit. Scientists use genomics to identify the presence or absence of organisms based on their DNA, a technique that can work on both the land

and marine environment. This can provide a more accurate and cost-effective approach than traditional monitoring methods, particularly in aquatic settings. In agricultural, genomics is helping us to develop better pest and disease management practices, thus reducing the need for chemical inputs, and to refine breeding programs so that plants can naturally withstand drought and other environmental impacts.

Aquaculture scientists are also employing genomics to develop sustainable and environmentallyfriendly fish feeds. Genomics can also help us to identify novel value-added products from renewable marine sources.

Some microbes metabolize (eat) hydrocarbons, which means that they can help us to both pinpoint petroleum deposits and clean up oil spills. Genomics is helping us understand what communities of microbes thrive on oil and how they interact with their environment. This knowledge is incredibly useful in de-risking offshore oil and gas exploration as well as in enabling companies to employ this natural environmental remediation tool in the event of an oil spill.

Genomics can help us identify the microbes that can clean up contaminated industrial sites. Scientists have turned this knowledge into a patented microbial mixture that is sold

around the world to deal with toxic substances. Some companies are taking the idea of using microbes even further, using them as a clean technology that replaces more traditional chemicals used to leach minerals from tailings ponds in mine sites. This avoids environmental contamination, while extracting more value from a mine’s assets.

Other companies are using genomics to convert waste products into energy and other value-added products. Genomics can give these companies an edge by helping them understand which microbes are best for the job.

Companies that embrace genomics-based solutions to meet health, economic and environmental challenges have the potential to be triple bottomline leaders in sustainability, profitability and social responsibility. Researchers at the Global Institute for Food Security, located at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, are preparing to feed our growing population by breeding stronger and more resilient plants. Protecting Canadians with Locally Manufactured Vaccines

Plant Proteins: A Safe, Nutritious and Sustainable Food Source

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – home to one of the world’s largest and most advanced containment level 3 facilities – will soon be able to manufacture human and animal vaccines for some of our planet’s most serious disease-causing microbes.

Global demand for plant-based proteins is on the rise, creating unique opportunities for ‘protein innovators’ across Western Canada to add new value to our crops.

The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization - International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac) plans to open the $8.1-million manufacturing facility in 2020. The new facility will help Canada’s vaccine technologies enter the market quicker. It will reduce Canada’s reliance on other nations to supply certain vaccines and has the potential to supply vaccines should an international outbreak occur.

For academia, government, companies and organizations like VIDO-InterVac, having the ability to pair basic and applied research with manufacturing will help drive innovations to the market. This will ultimately protect human and animal health. Similar to VIDO-InterVac’s containment infrastructure, the manufacturing facility will be accessible for external users.

Protein Industries Canada (PIC) is an industry-led alliance of over 120 private-sector companies, academic institutions and other stakeholders across the country, whose aim is to increase Canada’s share of the plant-based proteins market.

The growth will be accomplished by capitalizing on the full potential of prairie crops, beginning with pulses and canola, and eventually moving to other crops. Through processing and the development of food and feed products, we will generate more value from our commodities.

The pan-prairie ‘supercluster’ will utilize $152 million in innovation funding from the federal government, augmented with $280 million of industry funding and in-kind contributions as well as a $150-million venture capital fund to invest in startups and established businesses alike that are adding value to raw material, specifically in the creation of plant-based protein products.

he new $500 million world-class Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness (PMC), located in downtown Brampton, has officially opened its doors. The 350,000 square foot facility brings together many different health care providers in one convenient location to provide specialized health care services – both traditional and alternative. It’s a modern, well-equipped facility, offering an innovative approach to the services the community needs, including high-tech diagnostics and day surgery facilities, an urgent care centre, senior’s rehab and wellness services, women’s, children’s and adolescent care as well as mental health programs.

Brampton’s ambition is to build a significant Health and Life Sciences cluster around the Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness.

Better Feed, Better Fish

S

cientists at Memorial University, the University of Prince Edward Island and aquaculture firm Cargill Aqua Nutrition are using genomics to help the aquafeed industry develop feeds that improve the health of farmed salmon and protect them against sea lice and pathogenic viruses and bacteria.

In the past 20 years, aquaculture production in Canada has more than doubled to close to $3.1 billion in economic activity a year. The industry now employs about 15,000 Canadians and exports 101,000 tonnes of food products.

However, the health of farmed salmon in Canada is perpetually threatened by infectious diseases, including those caused by sea lice, pathogenic viruses and bacteria.

“These collaborative projects, with funding from Genome Canada, have enabled us to bring an entirely new realm of information to bear on scientific problems that, otherwise, would have taken many more years to solve. Better feed can enhance fish health, reduce the need for antibiotics and improve the rate at which fish grow.

But until now, there has been no practical way for aquafeed companies to measure how well novel feeds work beyond weighing the fish and judging feed effectiveness using growth rates.

In the Genome Canadafunded Biomarker Platform for Commercial Aquaculture Feed Development project, launched in 2014, Dr. Matthew Rise of Memorial University, Dr. Richard

Taylor of Cargill Aqua Nutrition (a division of Cargill, which purchased salmon nutrition company EWOS in 2015) and other collaborators are identifying and validating salmon genes related to growth, for inclusion in a biomarker panel. From individual fish, the researchers analyze the expression of approximately 30 genes associated with disease response and growth to determine the effects of various feeds and ingredients at the genomic level. One example of this is the impact of diet on lipid metabolism or antiviral immune response.

The process of translating that information into better-quality feed is about more than just boosting immunity. The genetic biomarkers enable researchers to track what each pathogen or other immune stimulus does to salmon and what a potential treatment does when added to salmon feed. For bacterial infection, for example, it is important to control chronic inflammation. For viral infection, controlling digestible energy and adding immune stimulants may be necessary.

The genomic tools developed through this project allow Cargill Aqua Nutrition, one of the world’s largest producers of aquafeeds, to determine right down to the cellular level how fish are impacted by the feed.

Furthermore, the company is able to quickly and accurately assess the impact of new feed ingredients on fish rather than waiting months for a fish to show a noticeable change in size.

This technology is helping Cargill Aqua Nutrition to improve their feed formulas and develop new, high-quality feeds.

The company is commercializing new feeds within the life of the project, with more new products

likely to follow in the coming years. Cargill Aqua Nutrition sources approximately 80 per cent of feed ingredients from Canada, and sells feed to Canada, the U.S.A., Mexico and Asia.

Dr. Rise, Dr. Taylor, Dr. Mark Fast of the University of Prince Edward Island and their collaborators subsequently received funding for a second GAPP project in 2016 – Integrated Pathogen Management of Co-infection in Atlantic Salmon. This project uses the tools and knowledge developed in the Biomarker Platform project to better understand salmon response to a very complicated situation that can occur at salmon farms: the exposure of fish to more than one pathogen at a time (co-infection).

This academic–industry partnership will result in the increased sustainability of the Canadian salmon industry, the improvement of animal welfare in the aquaculture industry and the application of these same biomarkers to studies of wild salmon stocks.

Both Genomic Applications Partnership Program projects – the $3.8-million Biomarker Platform for Commercial Aquaculture Feed Development project and the $4.5-million Integrated Pathogen Management of Coinfection in Atlantic Salmon project – involve partnerships with Genome Atlantic and others.

More than 40 health research institutes bring hundreds of clinicians, researchers and scientists together with entrepreneurs and multi-national companies to validate health innovation from radio-pharmaceuticals to medical devices to in-clinical processes.

Around the World, Around the Block Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) is a world leader in large clinical trials and population studies. With a staff of 350 PHRI oversees more than $150 million in clinical trials each year. With unparalleled transdisciplinary expertise in epidemiology and population health, PHRI’s capacity to conduct multiple international studies concurrently, with tens of thousands of participants in each, is a capability few can match.

To date, PHRI has enrolled more than a million participants on six continents and in 101 countries. It is now undertaking one of the most extensive population health studies in the world, involving 200,000 people across 25 countries.

Hamilton’s “culture of enquiry and challenging established thinking” and ability of researchers to collaborate locally, nationally and internationally built PHRI, says its founder Dr. Salim Yusuf. It tackles “important health questions by thinking big, globally, and

A former World Health Foundation president, Dr. Yusuf is an internationally renowned cardiologist and epidemiologist, who was the second-most cited researcher in the world in 2011.

The expertise of PHRI was spun off into the for-profit Bay Area Research Logistics (BARL) in 2007 to provide logistics services for large international trials conducted by research institutions, biotech companies, pharmaceutical organizations and academic researchers from around the world. In 2017, BARL was chosen to run all of GSK clinical trials in Canada.

Learning about living longer The Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA), the largest long-term study ever undertaken in Canada is exploring how 50,000 participants age and how to shape policy around disease prevention and health services.

The CLSA data is made available to researchers, entrepreneurs, urban planners and policy-makers in real-time, allowing for immediate innovation and the commercialization of novel health technologies and processes to tackle the health and social burdens of aging populations.

INNOVATING ON THE HOSPITAL FLOOR Fighting allergic disease AllerGen NCE Inc. is a national research network hosted by McMaster University dedicated to supporting research, commercialization and capacity-building activities that contribute to reducing the morbidity, mortality and socio-economic impact of allergic disease. Dr. Judah Denburg, the scientific director at AllerGen, oversees one of the largest practices in allergy and immunology in Canada.

The Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) Study, hosted by St. Joseph’s Healthcare, is following 3,500 mothers and children.

CHILD is the largest multidisciplinary, longitudinal, population-based birth cohort study in Canada, and one of the most informative studies of its kind in the world. Data on how genetics and early childhood environmental exposures impact asthma, allergies and other chronic childhood diseases have led to more than a dozen key discoveries that are changing medical practice, consumer product regulation and public policy.

Dr. Alison Fox-Robichaud, a critical care physician professor of medicine, had two innovative ideas: drastically cut code blue events, and a bedside device to test for sepsis.

The Hamilton Early Warning Score (HEWS) Dr. Fox-Robichaud developed reduced code blue events from 400 to just 54. “HEWS is harnessing technology to push the right information to the right people to decrease code rates,” said Fox-Robichaud. A digital bedside monitoring system that tracks abnormalities in a patient’s vital signs to detect subtle indicators of declining health before a critical event, HEWS is now deployed across multiple locations.

The Thrombosis and Atherosclerosis Research Institute (TaARI), earned an international reputation for innovation excellence, beginning with the world’s first clinical trial demonstrating the effectiveness of using aspirin to prevent stroke.

Today, a multi-disciplinary TaARI team led by Dr. Fox-Robichaud, has developed a bedside device to quickly detect the presence of sepsis, a condition which kills more people in Canada than heart attacks. The TaARI device zeroes in on biomarkers that will predict what patients are at risk for lifethreatening sepsis earlier than traditional lab tests.

BIOMEDICINE

Ground-Breaking Biomedicine The opening of the Fraunhofer-McMaster Project Centre for Biomedical Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing (BEAM) in March 2018 is a game-changer for biomedical research and commercialization in Hamilton. The 20,000-square-foot, $33-million facility at the McMaster Innovation Park brings to Hamilton the global prestige of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology (IZI), a world leader in manufacturing cell therapies. It is only the second Fraunhofer partnership in Canada.

Biomedical companies are increasingly leveraging partnerships across Hamilton.

McMaster University, the No. 1 Canadian university by corporate research partnerships, saw $480 million spent on public-private collaborative projects between 2013-2017.

BEAM researchers work with 35 industry partners to translate novel technologies for the marketplace through validation, clinical trials, demonstration and manufacturing. Biotechnology companies like Fusion Pharmaceuticals (see insert) will leverage BEAM to advance work new cancer treatments; biomarkers for cancer detection; point-of-care tests for rapid diagnosis of infectious and chronic disease; and biomaterials to aid in the treatment of disease.

The BEAM centre builds on the work being done at the McMaster Biointerfaces Institute, which has achieved global acclaim in leading cutting-edge research into eye treatments and cell therapy.

Charu Kaushic is a mucosal immunologist who focuses on women’s susceptibility and immune response to HIV and the herpes virus, with the goal of developing new ways to protect women from infections using vaccines and immunotherapies.

Breakthroughs in infectious disease The Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research (IIDR) is a global leader in trans-disciplinary research into infectious disease, including virology, immunology, bacterial pathogenesis, population biology and epidemiology.

IIDR’s 35 principal investigators and more than 300 researchers are focused on bridging the lab and marketplace and have been sought out globally to participate in hundreds of collaborations with private industry, research institutes, and hospitals, which have led to commercialization opportunities. IIDR research has become the “go-to” resource across North American for researchers working on antimicrobial resistance, vaccines, and drug discovery.

More than 200 patents and patent applications have been overseen by IIDR director Dr. Gerry Wright, a leading groundbreaking research into using fungi as new sources of antibiotics.

IIDR researchers are among the leaders in the global investigations into a universal flu vaccine and how to combat drug-resistant superbugs. Among IIDR breakthroughs is an innovative test patch to detect harmful pathogens, such as E. coli or salmonella, in consumer food, alerting consumers to potentially dangerous bacteria with the scan of a smartphone.

IIDR has an impressive track record of spinning intellectual property into commercial entities. Among the list of spin-out companies is Turnstone Biologics, Symbal Therapeutics, Triumvira Immunologics, Advanced Theranostics, InnovoGENE Biosciences and Adapsyn Bioscience.

CASE STUDY Fusing Health & Business Hamilton’s Fusion Pharmaceuticals, which develops treatments using medical isotopes to eradicate cancer cells, secured more than $59 million from global investors, and was named Ontario’s Life Sciences Company of the Year in 2018.

Built on the work of Dr. John Valliant, who founded the Centre for Probe Development and Commercialization (CPDC). CPDC has completed more than 50 radiopharmaceutical discovery, development, and manufacturing programs and brought more than a dozen products into clinical development.

“There is rapid growth among companies in this sector in Hamilton, and biotech companies are receiving funding,” said Valliant, Fusion’s CEO.

A Living Lab on aging The GERAS Centre for Aging Research is a leader in fracture, frailty, dementia and end-of-life research.

Its Living Lab, and affiliation with world class geriatricians, research scientists, primary and community support healthcare professionals, allows for rapid and seamless product and innovation testing and evaluation in a real-world environment.

GERAS has worked with local, national and international firms on prototyping and first customer acquisition. The GERAS Centre is partnered with a Norwegian health technology company to pilot one of the world’s first “smart” hospital beds and assess its impact on patient care.

A talent for commercialization To educate and attract the next generation of life sciences talent, McMaster University created the Biomedical Discovery and Commercialization. Led by Dr. Eric Brown, a worldwide leader in drugresistance superbug research and discovery, the multidisciplinary hybrid bachelor-masters program combines discovery research, business acumen and health sciences.

“There is so much highly innovative healthcare and life science work going on in Hamilton waiting to be taken to market. But the expertise and business environment for that is building. It’s not just about commercialization, but about patient impact. It takes significant backing to make that happen.”

Valliant says the work to coalesce a life sciences cluster in Hamilton, which builds on innovative, results-oriented research, will help the next wave of companies emerge and grow.

“We are nimble and fast in Hamilton and that’s a significant advantage. Hamilton has great people and great research and technology and is building its ecosystem based on that success. This is definitely the time for all this to happen in Hamilton.”

Adaptable Bioscience Adapsyn Bioscience applies next-generation bioinformatics to discover and develop novel biomolecules produced in nature.

A recent $162 million partnerships with Pfizer Inc. will accelerate the pharmaceutical giant’s drug discovery results. “They could go anywhere but they chose our technology. Using big data and analytics means we can find new medicines faster and at lower cost,” says Adapsyn’s founder, Dr. Magarvey.

“McMaster recognizes that it’s individuals who innovate and it enables that process. It allows great the great energy of researchers and entrepreneurs to make things happen. The University is rare in recognizing that.”

DIGITAL HEALTH

MEDIC is Canada’s only Technology Access Centre with a focus on digital health, healthcare standards and interoperability.

Digital Health The application of digital technologies is transforming all aspects of healthcare. The volume of medical data generated worldwide is expected to double every 73 days by 2020. It’s estimated that an average person generates one million gigabytes of health data in a lifetime – equal to more than 300 million books.

Hamilton is a leader in digital health, from system integration and inter-operability to prototyping novel technologies, to educating the next generation of digital health entrepreneurs.

Exporting Digital Expertise The mHealth & eHealth Development and Innovation Centre (MEDIC) at Mohawk College is Canada’s only Technology Access Centre with a focus on digital health, and serves to bridge the gap between innovative small- and medium-sized enterprises and the mobile health and ehealth needs of an increasingly complex healthcare system.

MEDIC works with companies, governments, health agencies and hospital networks in a dozen countries and across three continents.

State-of-the-art facilities and equipment,

including a e-health ecosystem in a living lab environment, enable MEDIC to support companies across the health IT innovation lifecycle, from design to deployment.

Under the direction of founder Duane Bender, MEDIC created an immunization management system for 50 million people in Tanzania, building on work digitizing Ontario’s decade-old paper-based immunization records system. Closer to home, MEDIC teamed up with a local hospital to test SMArTVIEW, a technology enabling in-home monitoring of patients recovering from cardiac and vascular surgery.

As part of Mohawk College, MEDIC is training the next generation of digital health experts for the sector, while McMaster University offers Canada’s only masters in e-Health, an inter-disciplinary program designed to build capacity around digital health informatics. The Institute for Applied Health Sciences, a joint collaboration between Mohawk and McMaster, is a multi-million one-of-a kind simulated hospital and long-term care centre that enables real-world experiences for more than 2,000 students a year.

Decoding drug resistance

Clinicians, researchers and budgets are under duress in the face of an aging population and healthcare is traditionally conservative about change, says Alexander, IBM Canada Healthcare Industry Technical Leader for the Innovation Exchange in partnership with HHS at the IBM Innovation Space located in downtown Hamilton. It is the only partnership of its kind focused on health care in Canada, bringing powerful IBM artificial intelligence, machine-learning and data analytics technologies in support of research scientists, industry and academic partners, start-ups and scale-ups working to solve healthcare challenges.

Antibiotic-resistant pathogens are an increasing global concern. An estimated 700,000 people die annually due to drug-resistant microbial infections, rising to 10 million a year by 2050 without intervention.

“Healthcare costs are mounting,” said Gordon Alexander. “We are bringing a transformation agenda to healthcare in order to accelerate the rate of adoption of innovation. Healthcare is complex and slow to move because patient health is at stake. We are fostering the necessary leadership, innovation, access to resources, proof of concept, the pilots and studies to bring change.” The Innovation Exchange provides the physical and technological space to bring everyone together to experiment and push innovative solutions.

Addressing this challenge are McMaster University researchers Gerry Wright and Andrew McArthur, world-renowned experts in antibiotic resistance and bioinformatics. Together they developed the Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database (CARD), which has been transformative on a national and international level. It is used by health agencies around the world, including the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Accessible to both public and private sector partners, CARD is a rigorously curated, searchable and up-to-date collection of known antibiotic resistance elements, pathogens and antibiotics. The ultimate goal is to create a system that collects and aggregates millions of data points a day, allowing for more effective treatment plans, better monitoring of the emergence of resistance, and guiding the development of new drugs.

Mariner’s surgical precision

St. Joseph’s Healthcare West 5th Campus

Integrated Systems, Integrating Care St. Joseph’s Healthcare is leveraging innovative technology to make integrated comprehensive care a reality, providing patients continuity of care across every interaction with the healthcare system. The model, developed and piloted first with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, won a Canadian leadership award for innovation in improving outcomes. It is now being instituted as a standard of care at academic hospitals across Ontario.

Partnering with a local Hamilton health technology company, orthopedic surgeons at St. Joseph’s have developed and tested an orthopedic patient portal, a practice and care management tool that gives surgeons realtime patient monitoring once they leave the hospital. It integrates patient feedback with reporting from other care providers involved in the rehabilitation process, allowing for more responsive care and better outcomes.

The project is part of a Synapse initiative which supports companies along their commercialization path, enabling them to perform on-site testing, product development, or clinical trials with a local care provider.

Mariner Endosurgery has taken full advantage of all the benefits of Hamilton’s life sciences innovation ecosystem. Formed in 2016, Mariner developed LaparoGuard, a soft-tissue surgical navigation platform that augments visualization during laparoscopic surgeries. Within a year it went from prototype, to first sale, having secured approval to treat its first patients at Hamilton General Hospital.

LaparoGuard sounds audio and video alarms when a surgeon encroaches on a safe buffer zone, while a video monitor displays augmented reality information, much like that projected on the windscreen of a fighter pilot.

Located at McMaster Innovation Park, the company worked closely with Innovation Factory, the regional innovation centre, as well as The Forge, the university campus accelerator. It’s also been backed by local angel investors and has collaborated with Hamilton surgeons who have been principal investigators on early trials.

“We are an early-stage life sciences company but we were able to engage in conversations with HHS and St. Joseph’s Healthcare,” said Mariner president and CEO Mitch Wilson.

“One of the greatest things about Hamilton is that things can happen very efficiently.

Connections are much easier with decisionmakers here. It’s easy to say you’re collaborative and not deliver on it. That doesn’t happen in Hamilton.”

GeneBlueprint for success GeneBlueprint was among the inaugural group of high potential start-ups chosen to partner with the Innovation Exchange and has taken up residence in the downtown HHS-IBM Innovation Space. There, it has gained access to HHS clinicians and conducted a clinical trial.

GeneBlueprint’s novel technology generates personalized genetic health and wellness programs based on a patented gene score data.

GeneBlueprint plans to migrate to the IBM Cloud platform and use Watson Analytics to uncover new insights from its trials. “Our immediate goal is to deliver preventative, predictive personalized healthcare that integrates hundreds of thousands of genetic variants. This large data requires computing and storage infrastructure, along with advanced analytics and cognitive computing software,” said co-founder and CEO Paul Mercante.

Ge Life Sciences Brings Bioprocessing Development Into the Future

n the quest to discover the next generation of personalized medicine treatments – groundbreaking approaches like cell therapies, viral vectors and a new generation of vaccines – GE Life Sciences is busy developing the tools to enable that discovery. 50 Years of Collaboration in Canada Medtronic is on a mission to work with healthcare systems to support the shift to value-based healthcare A country of firsts Canada’s healthcare ecosystem boasts a lot of “firsts”. In 1922, Drs. Frederick Banting and Charles Best were the first to discover insulin. In 1949, Wilfred Bigelow and John Callaghan were the first to discover the use of electrical stimulation to pace the heart. And in 1968, Canada became the

first international subsidiary of Medtronic, now one of the world’s largest medical technology, services, and solutions companies.

Medtronic came from humble beginnings — it was first established in 1949 as a medical device repair shop in co-founder Earl Bakken’s garage. After a power outage in Minneapolis in 1957 caused the death of a

paediatric patient reliant on a pacemaker plugged into the wall, heart surgeon Dr. Walter Lillehei asked Earl Bakken to create the first battery powered transistorized pacemaker1.

That collaboration between Medtronic and a physician would be the first of many to produce meaningful innovations that would impact millions of patient lives around the world. In Canada, this includes numerous collaborations with doctors on devices such as spinal implants, insertable cardiac monitors, and cryoablation technologies.

Collaborating on Research Although Canada represents only 2% of the global market for medical devices2, it punches above its weight in terms of research3. And for good reason.

Canada has a concentrated tertiary medical system, worldleading centres of excellence in evidence-based population health, and world-class research capabilities.

It’s not surprising, then, that in 2017, Medtronic had over 28 clinical trials underway in Canada and a significant number of its global trials involve a Canadian site.

One of the most significant trials funded by Medtronic Canada was a clinical trial at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, which ultimately showed that cardiac resynchronization therapy produced a 30% survival improvement for certain patients with heart failure. Announced in 2010, the results of that trial have since benefited thousands of patients.

A new kind of collaboration Medtronic sees its role as more than developing the cardiac pacemakers, insulin pumps, and other leading-edge devices for which it’s known. Medtronic is collaborating with health system leaders to apply its expertise in technology and innovation to help transform healthcare systems struggling to remain sustainable in the face of rising costs, clinical pressures, and aging populations.

That’s why in 2013, Medtronic created its Integrated Health Solutions (IHS) business that moves beyond devices to focus on system-level services and solutions. Today, Medtronic IHS helps hospitals and health systems align value across the care continuum by delivering more efficient and improved care to patients.

In Ontario, IHS worked with Brampton Civic Hospital’s Diabetes Education Centre to find solutions to increase the number of new patient visits, boost capacity for classes, and decrease the number of no-shows.

Working with IHS, the centre was able to realize 2,600 hours of process efficiencies, freeing up time to conduct 33% more patient visits, while reducing wait times from up to two months, to less than 3 weeks.4 Similarly, the New Brunswick Heart Centre leveraged Medtronic’s deep clinical and operational expertise and, within six months, increased operating room capacity by 14% and reduced average wait times by 44% from about 4 months to 2 months (i.e., from 118 to 66 days).5 “If you think of the system itself as a patient suffering from sustainability challenges and burnout,” says Neil Fraser, president of Medtronic Canada, “what we’re trying to do is address an illness that can be helped through technology, innovation, and collaboration. This is consistent with our mission of alleviating pain, restoring health, and extending life because there’s a lot of pain in the system. And there’s also a lot we can do in the areas where we have expertise to continue to help the Canadian healthcare system improve.”

To that end, Medtronic is working with the healthcare system to improve access to medical technologies through a value-based approach, which promises to deliver better outcomes for patients at a lower cost to the system by focusing on value rather than volume.

This involves collaborating with hospitals on patient pathways, with clinicians and researchers on clinical trials, and with health organizations and ministries on removing obstacles to value-based healthcare.

Value-based healthcare in Canada According to the Economist Intelligence Unit’s global study of country readiness for valuebased healthcare, Canada was rated “moderate”, with only two countries rated higher.

Canada’s universal coverage of medical and hospital care and its experimentation with bundled payment contributed to this rating.

Looking to the future of Medtronic and the healthcare system, Fraser says, “So many things are changing as a result of technology and the social networks that are available. We are involved in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and personalized medicine — and also patient voice. We’re increasingly incorporating patient-reported outcomes and experiences into the way we measure the success of our products and the impact of changing healthcare policy on patient outcomes.”

Medtronic understands that to benefit from transformative innovations, it must also make healthcare more sustainable. The future of value-based healthcare will hinge on collaboration between industry, physicians, health system leaders, and patients.

Responsible for nearly $700 million in revenues and over 16,000 full time positions in 2017, the industry is a significant contributor to Alberta’s highly skilled, knowledge and innovation-driven economy.

Composed of a large number of start-ups and small businesses

that complement an established set of mature firms, the sector is a dynamic mix of both large and small players. Alberta’s life sciences sector is well diversified in its end markets, with 42% of revenue being sourced from within the Province, 43% from US and international markets, and 15% from the rest of Canada.

This year’s survey was sent to more than 230 Alberta companies, a significant growth from previous years, and a signal that the number of companies in the sector has expanded.

Of those, 165 respondents reported a significant increase in both research & development (“R&D”) spending and capital raised. By the end of 2017, aggregate R&D spending is expected to increase by over 200% from 2014, while the corresponding amount of capital raised is expected to increase by nearly 230% in the same period.

This implies that the industry is preparing for a growth surge by investing now in the development of new products and services. For the third

report in a row, and despite the growth in capital raised in 2016, respondents identified financing and funding as the primary issues facing the industry. Improving access to venture, angel, corporate, and institutional financing and the ease of applying for provincial granting programs continue to be a challenge for the industry.

With indicators suggesting that the industry is poised for a significant period of growth, the need to improve the investment climate across the sector continues to be an important issue for Alberta companies.

Addressing these challenges will support the industry in continuing to build on its historical strengths as an important source of research, commercialization, and highly skilled employment, and sustainable growth in the province.
