Mirexus Biotechnologies

Advanced manufacturing counts 360 businesses in Guelph. The largest is Linamar, provider of powertrain components to the automotive, commercial truck, agriculture, marine, energy and industrial markets. It operates 22 plants in Guelph among 61 worldwide, with total sales of $6 billion in 2016.

The Guelph operations employ about 10,000 and are the company’s most productive plants, said Mark Stoddart, chief technology officer and executive vice-president of sales and marketing.

There is tremendous manufacturing knowledge, expertise and pride in the city, he says.

“Guelph has always had a strong manufacturing presence, with Guelph Tool, Ralston Metal Products and Hammonds Manufacturing. There is a long history here and a lot of companies have been established in Guelph.”

Linamar was founded with a single lathe in 1966 and since then has built its own local ecosystem of suppliers, contractors and partners. The company is making a $500-million investment in artificial intelligence, collaborative advanced robotics, and 3D printing, backed by about $100 million in federal and provincial funding.

NSF International is a global organization that writes standards, and tests and certifies products for the food, water, health sciences and consumer goods industries. It’s part of Guelph’s agricultural biotechnology cluster, the top-ranked in Ontario.

NSF merged with the Guelph Food Technology Centre in 2013, which was founded by OMAFRA, the University of Guelph and local food industry stakeholders.

“The original mandate of GFTC was to provide state-of-the-art food research and development facilities, commercialization expertise, and capabilities to provide “one-stop shopping” for companies seeking to compete in local, national and global markets,” said Lise Smedmor, senior manager, marketing and communications for North America.

“The Canadian office of NSF International now has over 100 employees, works each year with 5,000 businesses and trains more than 12,000 global professionals in the food and beverage industry.”

NSF opened a 20,000-square-foot facility in 2016.

“Guelph is well-positioned as it’s located within Canada’s growing food cluster, one of the largest in North America, and the new facility supports and expands our capabilities and leadership.”

BIOREM is a 25-year-old environmental biotech company that designs air pollution control solutions using natural microbes to destroy airborne contaminants in industrial emissions. Its processes are used in more than 1,200 installations in 23 countries, including automotive paint facilities, rendering plants, wastewater plants and landfills.

BIOREM is headquartered in Guelph, with offices in New York, Atlanta, Beijing and Wuhu, China.

“Guelph is a special place. The culture and aesthetics of the city continually draw me back,” said president and CEO Derek Webb. “There is a close-knit community of other environmental and clean-tech firms, and an open, supportive and progressive municipal government, from the economic development group all the way up to the mayor.”

He said the company draws on co-op students and graduates from the University of Guelph and the city provides terrific access to the GTHA, Kitchener-Waterloo and the United States.

“I am always encouraging others to set up shop in Guelph. I am currently working with the Guelph government to bring direct foreign investment into the area and am actively working to set up an international clean-tech innovation ecosystem based in Guelph.”

Mirexus, the result of research at the University of Guelph, will soon move into its new 12,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, the first of its kind in the world. There, it will produce 16 tons of PhytoSpherix, extracted and purified glucose particles from sweet corn that have many applications in personal care, nutrition and biomedicine.

The City sold the company land in its Hanlon Creek Business Park at a competitive price and city staff and leaders “have helped us move this along quickly while maintaining their standards. That’s important to us in taking advantage of the market opportunities open to us,” said Phil Whiting, president and CEO. There was no question Mirexus would make Guelph its permanent home and be part of making the city a centre of excellence in agri-business.

“We need to be where the knowledge lives and Guelph is a great place to live,” said Whiting. “There really was no other place that comes close to Guelph for us.

Energy Efficiency Investments Drive Public Awareness and Student Engagement at University of Guelph

T

he relationship between Guelph Hydro Electricity Systems Inc. and the University of Guelph is extremely important as both businesses strive to achieve energy conservation targets. Through a commitment of sustainability enshrined in its Strategic Plan, as well as the Campus Master Plan, the University has invested one million dollars, year – over – year, in energy efficient upgrades. Working together with the community and Guelph Hydro enables the University to enact change while promoting large-scale energy conservation.

“A few years ago, our students decided they really wanted to put the University on the map in terms of sustainability and they were willing to put their money where their mouth is. In addition to doing retrofit projects that were largely behind the scenes, students wanted the University to invest in projects that

were more visible. They voted in a $10 per semester surcharge which the University matches, and those funds are earmarked for sustainable projects,“ said Dan MacLachlan, Director of Design, Engineering and Construction, University of Guelph “What started as smaller retrofit work has now mushroomed into these amazing campus-wide energy efficiency projects.”

A marquee piece of the University’s “Green Gryphon” energy plan is the $15 million thermal energy storage tank. It symbolizes in a larger-than- life way, the University’s commitment to energy efficiency. Additional elements of this project include; $3 million in lighting retrofits; sub-metering in all of its buildings covering in excess of six-million square feet; HVAC

modifications and building automation system optimization resulting in additional energy savings of 8.7 MWh per year.

Guelph Hydro continues to work with the University in an ongoing basis to further identify potential energy efficiency opportunities from previous energy audits of 123 campus buildings. New projects may be supported by Save on Energy incentives for future energy savings, which would allow the University to further reinvest in additional energy savings projects.

Guelph Lab: An Initiative to Drive Social and Public Innovation University and City Collaborate to Serve the Community

A

s public institutions, cities and universities play a pivotal role in shaping their communities. When these institutions work collaboratively to drive social and public innovation, they can significantly expand the depth and scope of their impact. Remarkable evidence of this is seen in Guelph Lab, a joint initiative of the University of Guelph (UofG), and the City of Guelph. The Lab brings together municipal, community, and university expertise and knowledge to address community needs. Its contributions to important issues – from public sector procurement to the sharing economy – have been recognized across Canada.

What is the Guelph Lab – An Overview It is a “Public Innovation” Lab that started in 2015 as a partnership in which university staff, faculty, and students work with City staff to proactively improve municipal operations and support innovative practices in service delivery. The Lab, housed at the University’s Community Engaged Scholarship Institute (CESI), is one of a number of units on campus that works with community groups to drive change.

From applied research opportunities for students, to water conservation technology for citizens, the Lab shapes the future of the city in unprecedented ways.

Sam Laban, Guelph Lab facilitator, explains succinctly: “We’re focused on innovation in local government, and work on topics like procurement, budgeting, and the sharing economy. There are a growing number of Public Innovation Labs, but while

many of the emerging campus-based Labs are located in business schools, we’re based in a college of social sciences. We’ve worked with political scientists and sociologists, as well as with researchers in public health, geography, and psychology. And really, who better to help uncover what makes our community tick? If you are trying to meet local needs, how will you uncover what actually needs to change? We believe social scientists can help, and Guelph Lab is proving this to be true.”

The Lab has met with success on several complex projects such as:

The Lab’s primary objective is to bring together municipal, university and community expertise and experiences to address important community issues that require some form of government intervention. Under the aegis of the Lab, UofG students and staff work with City staff to design, test and implement projects.

The projects blend research, design, and experimentation. Currently, project teams are looking at City procurement practices, taxis and ridesharing, and ways to assess the health of the downtown.

Procurement Lab: In operation for 2+ years, this Lab conducts extensive research, analysis, and prototyping to improve City procurement processes.

Civic Accelerator: Developed out of the Procurement Lab, the Accelerator enables the City to work with technology companies to address pressing challenges, such as reducing residential water consumption by providing real-time smartphone alerts for residential water floods.

Sharing Economy: The Guelph Lab produced ‘Navigating the Sharing Economy: A Six-Decision Guide for Municipalities.’ Working with the Lab, students provided extensive research, conducting interviews with City staff and other experts, producing a list of resources, and preparing a scan of existing examples of municipal responses to the sharing economy. The Lab produced the first draft of the report and is pilot testing it as part of Guelph’s vehicle-for-hire bylaw review process.

As facilitator, Sam Laban proudly shares success stories marking the Lab’s 3 years since inception. He is cognizant though, of the tasks ahead. “I was part of a team that wrote an early “Guide” on Innovation Labs and in Guelph we’ve been able to put that theory into practice. I’m excited about the projects we’ve launched already, but I also know lasting impact takes time. What we have now is the capacity and experience to plant more of these “seeds” and to support them to achieve lasting and broad impact with and for this community.”

The Guelph Lab takes on challenges that require action by the Municipality; this could be through changes in policy and bylaws, changes to internal processes, or the creation of services, programs, partnerships and/or the allocation of funding. While the Civic Accelerator has been awarded on a national level, several smaller projects have made a big difference in the community as well.

With so much happening, it is easy to foresee a bright future with Guelph Lab leading the way for social and public innovation to benefit the community of Guelph.

Research Innovation means Big Benefits Two of the University of Guelph’s innovation leaders are resolute in their pursuit to Improve Life. Guelph-based Mirexus and G360 transform fundamental science discoveries into big business that will lead to significant benefits for Canada.

H

ow can we protect ourselves from cyber terrorists? What influences a consumer’s decisions to buy eco-friendly products? Can we make or identify new materials to revolutionize technological capabilities while minimizing waste? These are just some of the questions being answered by researchers in the University of Guelph’s College of Engineering and Physical Sciences, which includes five academic units—Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Sciences, and Engineering. Researchers in the College are working diligently to understand and solve real-world problems. There are many examples of exciting projects and successes and here are two of them. Mirexus

A happy accident in a University of Guelph research lab has led to a Guelph company targeting multi-billion-dollar market segments around the world.

Mirexus developed PhytoSpherix®, a patented process to extract and purify phytoglycogen, a natural biomolecule produced by sweet corn.

The glucose particles are safe, nontoxic, biodegradable and have incredible water-retention properties. They present broad opportunities for applications in personal care, nutrition and biomedicine, altogether representing at least a $1.3-billion market opportunity.

Mirexus’ Glysantis business is exploring applications in vaccines, drug delivery and antibiotics. Mirexus is also launching its own line of skincare products through spin-off Veriphy Skincare.

Mirexus is part of Guelph’s globally recognized agri-innovation cluster, home to more than 350 agri-food and agri-biotechnology companies and associations.

“It makes perfect sense for Mirexus to continue to grow its business in the supportive and dynamic environment in Guelph. Quite simply, Guelph is the place to be,” said company founder and University of Guelph physics professor and

Canada Research Chair Dr. John Dutcher, who led the research team that made the discovery.

Dutcher says the venture has relied on many local and provincial organizations, including Innovation Guelph, the University of Guelph, the Ontario Centres of Excellence, MaRS Innovation, Ontario AgriFood Technologies, and OMAFRA. “These organizations have provided valuable advice and funding to do a variety of essential things, ranging from growing corn varieties to doing proof-of-principle experiments to making prototype products to doing market research to scaling up of the production of the particles. All of this was essential to translate the technology from the lab bench to the marketplace.”

He describes PhytoSpherix as “a classic case of serendipity.” A joint project with a microbiology team led

by Professor Terry Beveridge in 2006 yielded a waste product they soon realized held great scientific – and economic – potential.

Mirexus will move into a new 12,000-square-foot facility in Guelph’s Hanlon Creek Business Park in May. It will provide a manufacturing capacity of 16 tonnes per year of PhytoSpherix, along with research and development facilities, and sales and marketing offices. The company expects to grow from its current 18 full-time employees to about 90 in the Dr. John Dutcher next 10 years.

G360 Institute for Groundwater Research G360 is focused on field research to enhance fresh groundwater in Guelph and around the world, supporting ecosystems, drinking water, and food production.

Groundwater is a critical, though largely unseen resource, providing drinking water for 50 per cent of the world’s population but contamination is a pressing problem nearly everywhere.

G360 builds on the University of Guelph’s well-established excellence in field research, says institute founder and director Dr. Beth Parker.

The institute is the hub of a global collaboration of 20 institutions in 11 countries, attracts high-caliber students and researchers, and is supported by more than 25 multinational corporations, industry sponsors and government agencies. No other facilities for groundwater research and education backed by such academic-industrygovernment collaboration exist in the world.

Increasing demand for fresh water means we need to better understand its distribution and travel times. “Our challenge is to appreciate this resource more fully and implement innovative technologies for its improved protection and sustainable use,” said Parker, who

holds an NSERC Industrial Research Chair.

The City of Guelph, which relies on a bedrock aquifer for its water supply, is the model community for G360’s work and rapidly mobilizes its technology.

The institute works with many local partners that provide cash and in-kind contributions, host field research and hire graduates. Parker, who founded G360 in 2008, leads a team of 40 scientists, including 25 staff scientists and 15 graduate students.

“We bring extraordinary value to our industry sponsors with real-world results.

They get access to insights generated by a consortium of research expertise and funded by a pool of sponsors.”

Parker says there is a vision, supported by the University and the City, to transform G360’s on-campus field facility – the Bedrock Aquifer Field Facility (BAFF) –­ into a groundwater discovery centre that would combine research, technology development and hands-on professional teaching with community outreach and engagement. It would also showcase innovations developed by G360, which holds a number of patents and trademarks.

Parker is especially proud of her institute’s focus on high-quality but costeffective science.

“We have a lot of sophisticated tools and we are interested in how they can be made portable and applicable to solve a variety of problems.

Through Leadership and Innovation, the University of Guelph Improves Life U

niversity of Guelph student innovators Frazer Seymour in computer science and Jerry Ennett in biomedical engineering, recently worked on separate projects with similar goals. They are using their U of G acquired tech skills to improve lives.

Last year, both young men contributed to inventions that could enhance the enjoyment of life for countless people around the world.

Seymour was the programmer for a device that makes it easier for people

with dementia to play their favourite music on an iPad. “Independent access to music for people with dementia is hard, because with something like a record or CD player, they slowly lose the ability to use it,” says Seymour. He helped make the playing of music easier as the co-creator of AMI (Adaptable Music Interface).

Jerry Ennett attributes a highly creative, flexible and hands-on engineering program with getting him stoked about making the world a better place. He developed a fully

functioning prosthetic hand using 3D printing technology. Last year, he traveled to India to share his hand printing technology with officials in a medical clinic dedicated to caring for the impoverished.

“I like using cutting-edge tech to help people,” says Ennett. “That’s one of the coolest combinations.”

Since childhood, Melanie Wills had battled an undiagnosed illness. She was well into her doctoral studies at the University of Guelph before she learned what was making her sick.

Chronic pain, severe fatigue, thyroid and vision problems had become a way of life, as did misdiagnoses and unhelpful treatments. She missed a lot of school, spent months in bed.

Despite all of that, Mills came to U of G on a President’s Scholarship and went on to win the University’s most prestigious graduate award for her PhD studies on cell signalling in cancer.

Halfway through her graduate studies, a doctor she had waited over two years to see made the diagnosis all others had missed: Wills had Lyme disease.

Perspective

The diagnosis opened a whole new research field for her. She co-founded the Canadian Lyme Science Alliance, and now heads the G. Magnotta Lyme Disease Research Lab, named for Gabe Magnotta, co-founder of Magnotta Winery and namesake of a foundation that provided $1.4 million to the U of G lab in 2017. Wills works with other researchers to find biomarkers that could lead to better diagnostic tests and treatment for Lyme. She is living proof of the U of G tagline “Improve Life,” and an example of how the university provides opportunities and makes leaders out of students.

Judy Maddren had a strong goal and a big dream when she came to U of G to study applied science in the late 1960s.

She graduated in 1972, determined to become a radio announcer. But she was told that particular job was reserved for men. She should look elsewhere.

But U of G taught Maddren determination, and she persisted.

She became a CBC Radio reporter and ultimately one of the national broadcaster’s first female announcers. In 1990, she produced the first public reading of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. It became a national phenomenon, now with annual readings in more than 100 communities, raisiong millions of dollars for food banks, shelters and hospitals.

“Coming to Guelph gave me opportunities to try things out,” she says.

Management, and a quadriplegic, owns a consulting business that advises restaurants, hotels and airlines on improving accessibility. He started the business after his accident.

In 2011, Cumpson was taking part in a University of Guelph humanitarian trip to Peru when a swimming mishap left him paralyzed from the armpits down. After five semesters away, he resumed his studies. He says he could have transferred to a school closer to home but wanted to stick with what he called U of G’s “best in the nation” hospitality program.

g u e l p h He completed his degree through a combination of distance education and Skype, as well as reliance on students, faculty and staff for help when needed. He now coaches people with disabilities in travel planning, pursuing higher education and managing relationships, and advocates for better health services for people with disabilities.

“My abilities in life have changed, but I still have these other abilities to push forever and work through in life.”

The University of Guelph brings its entire campus community to bear on global problems, weaving collaborations across a number of disciplines and departments to tackle current and future challenges. Helping to feed a growing world population drives a large, interdisciplinary project at “Canada’s food university.”

In late 2016, U of G received $77 million in federal research funding to establish the Food From Thought project, with a focus of finding ways to feed a planet projected to have nine billion human inhabits by 2050.

Growing food in a sustainable way is fundamental to a project that brings together researchers from across campus, further strengthening U of G’s global reputation in agri-food studies.

The long-standing research funding partnership with the Ontario

Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, recently renewed with a 10-year, $713 million commitment, is integral to these efforts, and has bolstered U of G’s reputation as one of Canada’s most inventive universities.

The partnership, established in 1997, has spurred U of G’s innovations that include designing methods for detecting avian flu, inventing the world’s first fully compostable coffee pods, and developing a tool to identify and breed cows with greater disease immunity.

T

he Centre for Business and Student Enterprise (CBaSE) at the University of Guelph is a collaborative and diverse community of entrepreneurs aiming to improve life.

CBaSE is U of G’s hub for innovation and entrepreneurship – it offers academic classes, a business incubator, and extra-curricular workshops to connect people across diverse sectors.

Using tools like the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and B Lab’s Impact Assessment™, CBaSE guides and empowers students, faculty, and organizations that are looking for ways to make the world a better place.

“The global community is facing a web of challenges where economic, social, and environmental concerns intersect,” says CBaSE director Melanie Lang. “If humanity is going to thrive, we need a new kind of agile thinker. This

CBaSE’s incubator helps to nurture startups by providing them with seed funding, office space and access to esteemed mentors to bring their ideas to life. CBaSE also delivers business-consulting courses where future entrepreneurs and advising professors explore and collaborate as they bolster organizations in the Guelph community, all along the spectrum from for-profit to social profit.

CBaSE also acts as one of the on-campus resources for University researchers who wish to turn their academic proposal into a business-oriented value proposition.

Change the world Taurus 3D and Welo are just two of the dozens of companies to graduate from CBaSE’s incubator program. CBaSE’s team of mentors empowered the startups to refine their business model, branding, marketing, and pitch development, helping to bring their ideas to life.

Taurus 3D is making prosthetic limbs more accessible to people living in poverty across the world. In 2017, the company established a 3D printing facility at a children’s rehab center in Tamil Nadu, India. Each month, up to 20 people with amputations can receive free, 3D printed prosthesis.

Another CBaSE alumnus, Welo is providing clean water access in Kenya while serving up delicious health food across Canada. This probiotic drink and bar company is just the sort of business

that would come out of Canada’s “food university”. Whenever a Canadian makes a purchase, a portion of the profits helps to build sustaining wells in Kenya. With support from CBaSE, Welo developed their distribution network to reach consumers in BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Quebec; in Ontario you can find their products in every Sobeys, Longos, and Whole Foods.

Platform @ The Junction brings coworking space to Guelph

When Granite Homes needed a new head office and state-of-the-art design studio, the Guelph-based builder decided to create a space that reflected the company’s commitment to superior design, timeless architecture and top-quality construction.

I

nstead of building something brand new, they undertook an adaptive reuse project that transformed a former CN Rail building into a unique creative office space and 2,700 square foot Design Studio, open since the summer of 2016.

Now the award-winning company is getting ready to unveil the next phase of what will be a 45,000 square foot mixed-use development called The Junction.

Named after the vibrant Junction neighbourhood, Granite Homes VP Business Development Mike Taylor explains that the project will eventually include three buildings – two state-ofthe-art new-builds and the alreadyrenovated CN Rail structure.

The first new structure will welcome its first tenants this September.

Within this building is Platform @ The Junction, Guelph’s first coworking space. The 8,500 square foot state-ofthe-art space will offer members of the city’s creative, tech, and professional services sectors access to flexible and affordable office space and an opportunity to connect.

“There are a lot of young companies in Guelph that may not have the resources to enter into a traditional lease.

This is an opportunity for them to get into a great space without having to make a long-term commitment,” says Taylor.

Lease agreements at Platform @ The Junction will begin with just a sixmonth commitment.

The two-storey building offers 35 private offices suitable for up to four workers. Each office comes equipped with a full suite of designer furniture.

Tenants will also have access to highspeed internet, a large lounge area with couches, café tables, a coffee bar and charging station, as well as two state-ofthe-art boardrooms and a shared kitchen.

Tenants will also enjoy plenty of on-site parking including electric car charging and bicycle parking stations, and great visibility from Edinburgh Road – one of the city’s main thoroughfares.

The building is designed with the same character and architectural style as the converted CN Rail building. “It has high ceilings, large windows, polished concrete floors, glass partitions, and we’re bringing some brick inside,” says Taylor.

“It’s got that whole creative office feel, but will also be designed so people can focus on what they do best, which is their business.”

Setting up shop in a coworking environment offers many benefits, says

Taylor, beyond flexible lease terms and affordable space. “It’s a great opportunity to meet like-minded business people and develop relationships with other professionals.”

And it’s a great opportunity to be part of one of Guelph’s most vibrant urban neighbourhoods, one that is minutes from downtown and the University of Guelph campus. The Junction will also include an on-site restaurant, which Taylor hopes will become a community hub.

The Junction is the first large-scale commercial development undertaken by Granite Homes, which has established itself as one of the leading builders of luxury homes in Guelph and surrounding communities since 2001.

“Granite Homes is known for innovation and design, and we are doing that here,” Taylor says. “The Junction will incorporate everything creative companies are looking for in a space.”

Guelph Topped the List as the City Most Attractive for Real Estate Buyers in Canada Millennials and Canada’s start up culture are contributing to the growth in new business and speculative commercial development.

I

nvestment capital, tenants and talent are all heading westward from the GTA and Guelph has shown itself to be pro-business. But commercial product supply is short, he says.

“Guelph is no longer a secret. Good quality product in Guelph doesn’t last long because a lot of people are coming into the market or expanding their portfolio. There are a lot of exciting projects underway and a lot coming in the next three to five years. Guelph will take on a different shape.”

There has been strong industrial, residential and retail development in the south end of the city, along with intensification in the downtown.Yet Guelph is retaining its character, heritage and small-town, “fiercely green” vibe, says Valeriote, a city native.

“I think we are going the right way.

Guelph isn’t growing just to grow but strategically and with a plan.”

Guelph is a smaller market and somewhat insulated, said Darren Shaw, vice-president and broker at Colliers in the Kitchener, Waterloo and Guelph area. Guelph’s industrial market is about 23 million square feet, compared to about 60 million square feet in the Waterloo Region.

“But Guelph is fortunate, maybe more fortunate than the broader region because it has a greater supply of available serviced employment land and has seen good activity centred around that.”

The Hanlon Creek Business Park, a 675-acre development in Guelph’s

south, offers Class A industrial and office product with easy access to Highway 401. Cooper Construction has built on spec in the park, confident in the market interest in Guelph, says Peter Whatmore, executive managing director for southwestern Ontario for CBRE. “Those spec buildings are coming to market at a very timely point because, like many southwestern Ontario markets, there is a lack of industrial product in the larger than 40,000-square-feet range.”

The Hanlon park has been a “big positive for Guelph,” said Shaw. “Local companies have had the ability to expand and new companies are coming into the market.”

Newcomers benefit from lower land costs and development charges relative to the GTA and the Waterloo Region, though limited inventory and strong demand are putting upward pressure on lease rates and price per square foot sale.

Whatmore says demand from advanced manufacturers warehouse users has been particularly strong, building on a strong foundation in agri-business and agricultural science, a key driver in the Guelph economy.

The office market is a smaller component – 2 million square feet in Guelph, compared to 12 million in Waterloo Region. But Guelph is headquarters to big employers, including Linamar, The Co-operators and OMAFRA, and the tech sector that has driven office development in KitchenerWaterloo is emerging now in Guelph, says Shaw.

The municipality has approved plans for a 436-hectare Guelph Innovation District that will provide homes for more than 6,500 residents and space for more than 8,500 jobs.

“We’re starting to see some startups and there has been a lot of work to foster and support that segment,” Shaw said. “Guelph is a good fit and

complement with the Waterloo Region, especially with the agricultural and environmental technology centred around the University of Guelph.”

Guelph’s story has received plenty of attention recently. It was named among the top three millennial hot spots for 2018 by real estate analysts Point2 Homes. The evaluation, including affordability, average income, unemployment rates and life satisfaction, placed Guelph as the top Ontario city.

It was also named the best place to get a job in 2016 by BMO, with annual employment growth of 9.1 per cent, and the most attractive city for real estate investment value in Canada by MoneySense in 2017.

Shaw says there are also plenty of skilled employees and Guelph offers a terrific quality of life for young people and families.

“Talent is so readily available without it being a suburb. Guelph is a complete city.”

Style Bee’s guide to the perfect Saturday in Guelph If it were up to me, every Saturday in Guelph would go something like this:

M

y husband Dave and I would wake up in good time, encouraged by a bright day and a hungry corgi. I’d pull on my go-to jeans, a cozy sweater and some comfy boots then grab a couple of tote bags and we’d begin making our way across downtown to the Farmer’s Market. En route I’d fuel up on a latte (preferably matcha) from Galt Juice Co. or Planet Bean and we’d head in.

Once at the market we’d peruse the seasonal produce, local fare and let the fresh scents and bright colours inspire some meal ideas for the week to follow.

After filling the bags with goodies and wolfing down a freshly made cinnamon sugar donut (a can’t miss market treat!) we’d escape before the major rush. On our way out I’d zip into Take Time

Vintage to see if any treasures were calling my name.

From there we’d either stop into Eric the Baker for a few croissants or plop down on the patio at 39 Carden for a quick bite. I’d go for the Egg’s in a Nest, my personal favourite on the brunch menu and we’d likely discuss our ongoing house projects and travel goals for the months to come. Then, it’d be time to head back home.

Without a doubt we’d be welcomed by our two fur kiddos. Evie the cat, would be sure to inspect the bags and Dobby, our corgi, would convince us that a walk through Wolfond Park and along the Speed River Trail was absolutely in order. If we were feeling ambitious we might even make it to Riverside Park to watch the ducks float on the water and enjoy a little people watching. The visit would be extra special if a beaver made an appearance!

After a long stroll and lots of fresh air my instincts to hunker down would kick

in and I might head to the Bookshelf to pick up a good read or catch a matinee at the theatre with a girlfriend (my favourite place to watch a show). Of course, I’d pop my head in to say hi to the good folks at Blush, Kennedy Park and Truth Beauty where I might be tempted to treat myself to something lovely. Quebec Street is a must see for the best of Guelph’s boutique shopping.

If the sun was still going strong and the temperature was friendly I could probably be convinced to join Dave and some friends for a round of Frisbee Golf at the beautiful Guelph Arboretum where you can instantly forget the city is just minutes away. But if the sun was dipping down early, I’d pop into my favourite plant shop Blooms + Flora to see if I could bring a little of the outdoors home with me.

Then to polish off this delightful day we’d either fix up a farmer’s market feast or meet my parents for some French country cooking at Artisanale.

It’s safe to say I’d sleep really well and wake up feeling fresh and rested for a productive Sunday!
