I

t is an exciting time in Durham Region.

We’re on an incredible trajectory of growth, in fact, the Region’s population is expected to top 1 million residents by 2031. With growth, comes opportunity. Each, and every day I hear of new opportunities being created, innovative thinking, and incredible talent building businesses here in Durham.

With an impactful opportunity for a new airport in north Pickering, and a range of business investment opportunities in across the Region, we’re poised to be home to a vast array of new and relocated enterprises over the coming years.

Within the next five years, Ontario Power Generation will bring their headquarters to Clarington. Oshawa and Whitby are home to start-up incubation and acceleration and innovation is around every corner! Ajax has designated an innovation village. Toronto East Aerotropolis a Glimpse Into the Future

T

he Toronto East Aerotropolis offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grow the regional economy, create jobs, and avoid a looming shortage of airport capacity in southern Ontario.

An airport in Pickering is almost 50 years in the making but the time is now, says John Henry, Durham Region Chair and Chief Executive Officer of The Regional Municipality of Durham.

Because it is expected to take a decade or longer to build an airport, it’s imperative to set the process in motion.

In 1972, the federal government set aside about 18,600 acres in Pickering for a future airport. A few years ago, about 10,000 acres were given to the Rouge Urban National Park. That left about 8,600 for an airport and surrounding uses. To compare scale, Toronto’s Pearson airport is 4,600 acres.

“The world is changing, and we have a blank canvas to do the most exciting project in this country in a very long time that will become an economic engine for Ontario,” said Henry. “There is an unprecedented opportunity in front of us to do something bold.”

In 2011, Transport Canada determined there would be a need for a secondary airport in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) by approximately 2027. This projection is based on population growth, demand for air travel, and the capacity of airports in the region.

According to a 2018 report called Capacity Where it Counts, existing airports in southern Ontario can’t serve the need because they are all either west of Pearson, have expansion restrictions, or are beyond the GTA catchment area. That leaves the entire GTA, east of Pearson underserved.

Pickering is the best option. It is one of Canada’s fastest-growing communities.

Durham Region—the eastern gateway of

the Toronto Region—is on track to reach one million residents by 2031.

Transport Canada is expected to release an aviation sector analysis later this year that will lay out the role, timing and potential operating models of an airport in Pickering.

Fiaz Jadoon, manager of economic development and strategic projects with the City of Pickering notes that the hope is for an expedited process, as city officials are already seeing interest from aerospace companies, major airport developers and air carriers.

“We are setting out to make the case for this airport to the public,” said Jadoon. “Job creation and having jobs closer to home are important to people. This isn’t just about Pickering. It’s about Durham and York regions—all of Toronto East.”

According to urban expert Richard Florida, every other major metropolitan area in the world has multiple, complementary airports, including New York, Chicago, Paris, London and Singapore.

“A secondary airport is needed to realize the full potential of Pearson as a mega-hub,” Florida told a symposium for

the Toronto East Aerotropolis in April that was co-hosted by the City of Pickering and the Toronto Board of Trade.

“The function of airports has changed,” John Kasarda, an academic and author of Aerotropolis:The Way We’ll Live Next, told the symposium.

Where once airports were only meant to move people and goods, now they are “regional engines for economic development.”

An aerotropolis has a range of uses centred around an airport, including hotels, convention centres, warehousing, office, e-fulfilment centres, business and industrial parks, research centres, highvalue agriculture, and advanced and precision manufacturing.

Almost 50,000 people work “inside the gates” at Pearson. Another 322,000 jobs in Ontario and $42 billion in GDP are directly linked to the airport.

But Pearson can’t grow forever.

Passenger volume climbed—from 38.6 million in 2014—to 49.4 million in 2018. The airport’s master plan says it may be able to handle up to 85 million passengers by the mid2030s, but Kasarda says that will create

diseconomies, including flight delays, crowded gates and highway congestion.

The Toronto East airport lands are 50 kilometres away from Pearson and a mere 35 kilometres from downtown Toronto. They are the ideal solution, according to Henry. There’s easy access to highways 401 and 407, future transit opportunities, nearby rail lines (including one that runs through the lands), and the airport in the City of Oshawa.

“This will be an airport of the future. It’s not just about moving people. It will be a magnet for jobs in robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced vertical agriculture that will be fed by the talent graduating from our post-secondary schools,” explained Henry. “And because it’s greenfield, we can take community and environmental interests into account right from the start. Any development should include a strong focus on sustainable airport operations and climate resilience, including clean technology, renewable energy and integrated public transit. We have the time to do it right.”

“I see this as being quite disruptive,” said Isabelle Roberts, founder and CEO of Cg Belle Industries. “If you want to redeploy a part, it often means you must remove a coating; allowing it to be inspected, repaired or modified. Then, potentially recoated and redeployed.”

This traditional chemical method requires immersion in a tank and manual checks of the progress by workers.

“No one wants these jobs. Then they have to get into the tanks and remove the sludge after the chemicals are no longer effective and become hazardous waste,” said Roberts.

The Cg Belle process is automated, safe, sustainable and more cost effective, says Roberts. The company designs mounts for the laser equipment, which can then be used to remove paints, sealants, powder coatings and clear coats from components

WHAT IS A STEM CIRRICULUM?

Isabelle Roberts, founder and CEO of Cg Belle Industries of all sizes, including airplanes or a subway car covered in graffiti. As such, her company is targeting the automotive, aerospace and marine industries.

Roberts has demonstrated her process through contracts with the U.S. Department of Defence and the U.S. Air Force.

“In an effort to enhance our industry, I came up with a process that could be packaged in a way that would makes it easy for any manufacturer to use. It’s practical and at a price point that makes sense.”

It is clearly effective. Roberts’ system earned her an appearance on the Dragon’s Den. (However, she can’t reveal anything else until her episode airs.) Cg Belle Industries was also ranked among the Top 30 start-ups in Canada by the National Angel Capital Organization.

Roberts attributes part of her success to her work with Spark Centre in the City of Oshawa. It’s a business incubator that offers supports to early-stage and rapidly growing innovation and technology companies.

“Being surrounded by other people who are entrepreneurs and have a passion for what they are doing, it was great to be in that environment,” she said. “Starting and running a business is not an easy road to take, so it’s nice to be around others who are trying to make a difference in the world.”

Clarington: Investment Lives Here

S

ights are on the Municipality of Clarington as a place to call home.

In the last few years, dollars have been spent on infrastructure projects totalling over $14 billion, such as Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington Nuclear Refurbishment project, the Highway 407 East Extension to Highway 35/115, Port Granby environmental remediation project, and proposed GO Transit Lakeshore East Extension to Bowmanville. Clarington’s total building permit values also continue to increase year after year. With a population fast approaching 100,000—and expected to increase by more than 45 per cent by the year 2031—people and businesses are making a commitment to secure their future in Clarington.

According to the Municipality of Clarington’s 2018 Growth Trends Review report, Clarington’s total building permit values increased by 11.3 per cent, from $379.6 million in 2017 to $422.6 million in 2018. Residential building permit values rose by four per cent in 2018; rising from $330.3 million to $343.4 million. The value of non-residential building permits in 2018 increased by about 60 per cent, from $49.4 million to $79.1 million.

Clarington is one of the fastest-growing

municipalities within Durham Region.

Over the past 15 years, Clarington’s share of building permit values, within Durham, has more than doubled—rising from 10 to over 20 per cent. In 2018, the total value of building permits in the Region of Durham was about $2.06 billion. That’s an increase of $98 million from the previous year. The Municipality of Clarington contributed approximately a quarter of that total value.

Over one million square feet of industrial space for various users will be constructed in the next 18 months.

Construction of Toyota Canada Inc.’s 350,000-square-foot eastern Canada Parts Distribution Centre is well underway in east Bowmanville. A $40 million investment—bringing more than 100 jobs—is projected to be operational by April 2020.

East Penn Canada announced—earlier this year—that Clarington will be home of their new 200,000-square-foot distribution centre headquarters, just south of Highway 401.

In addition, Clarington is forming the foundation for the cannabis innovation.

Currently, there are three Health Canada Licensed Producers in the community;

OPG has chosen this Clarington site as the home of its new corporate campus. soon to be four. Six additional cannabis licensed holders are in various stages of development. It is anticipated this industry will represent over 1,000 skilled jobs, including those involved in cultivation, extraction, research and development and product development.

In June, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) announced its plan to build a new corporate campus in Clarington, which will consolidate its operations. Thus fostering collaboration and innovation.

Plans are to build this campus by 2024.

The facility will accommodate staff from 15 existing locations across the Greater Toronto Area and Niagara Region, bringing over 2,000 jobs to the Clarington community. OPG has created a positive economic imprint in Durham Region— supplying 34 per cent of clean, safe, reliable energy to Ontario for 30 years. Clarington is excited to encourage economic spin-off, as benefits are realized in the community.

The new campus will be built on an existing OPG site, just north of the Darlington Energy Complex.

Collaborating at Durham College in the New AI Hub Wisdom and insight are exchanged, and knowledge is created.

D

urham College will host a global ethical hacking and cyber security competition in October in its cutting-edge Hub for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence for Business Solutions (AI Hub).

The Global Cyberlympics finals, which have never been held in Canada before, will pit 15 teams from all over the world against each other in a series of challenges, including digital forensics, malware analysis, and network exploitation.

“We are so excited and proud to be hosting this unique competition at Durham College and seeing the very best talent in cyber security and artificial intelligence descend on the Durham Region for one of the most advanced competitions worldwide,” said Dr. Elaine Popp, vice- president, academic at DC. “As we continue to encourage advancement in the field of cyber security, I am confident this event will

encourage interest and present new opportunities to address the talent gap that exists in this sector.”

The AI Hub was established in 2018 and has since undertaken 16 projects with 35 community partners.

According to the AI Hub website: “Artificial intelligence is a term that represents a system that can sense its operating environment, reason, learn, and act in response to input and objectives. An observer of the behaviour would consider the results intelligent if a human performed the action.”

The AI Hub has worked with small and medium enterprises from startups to veterans across a range of sectors, says project manager project manager Ali Hirji. “(The Cyberlympics) are a great opportunity for us to stand out in global cybersecurity and to showcase our brilliant facilities at Durham College and Durham Region.”

He points to Durham College’s a firstof-its-kind Esports Gaming Arena—a 3,000-square-foot living lab and venue with 46 gaming PCs, extensive broadcast

The Durham College Hub for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence for Business Solutions (the AI Hub) offers industry partners access to technical expertise, state-of-the-art facilities and platforms, and student talent capabilities, and a lounge area that can hold up to 120 spectators for e-sports tournaments.

The College is also home to the Centre for Craft Brewing Innovation and will soon open an augmented reality/virtual reality simulation lab.

“Durham Region is a hotbed of innovative thinking; a place where a diverse and inclusive workforce drives innovation and creativity,” said John Henry, Regional Chair and Chief Executive Officer of The Regional Municipality of Durham “Durham College plays a strong role within this innovative ecosystem—offering collaborative research, leading-edge innovation, and market-driven academic programming that is transforming our communities. When a company has an idea or a challenge, the AI Hub team scopes the possibilities, develops a project plan, and puts together a team of four to five students (plus a faculty lead). This team typically works four to six months, but sometimes longer, to execute the research and create a prototype, says Hirji.

The AI Hub includes a GPUaccelerated computing lab employing leading AI deployment platforms from major cloud and on-premise providers.

AI Hub hosts workshops, seminars and one-on-one meetings for organizations beginning to consider AI, along with customized training and information sessions.

Past seminar topics have included building AI into special-needs education, cybersecurity, real estate, manufacturing, and the cannabis industry.

I

n July of this year, the Port of Oshawa joined forces with the Port of Hamilton through an amalgamation that creates a new approach to marine transportation in southern Ontario. The new HamiltonOshawa Port Authority, or ‘HOPA Ports’, positions these two key facilities as goods-movement bookends to the Greater Toronto-Hamilton Area (GTHA).

Oshawa’s deep-water port complements the region’s multimodal transportation network, giving shippers the ability to move raw materials, or get Canadian goods to market. The port’s record year in 2018 was propelled by strength in the construction sector, with solid demand for structural steel, asphalt, salt and aggregates.

A new, $6 million grain export terminal opens this fall, enhancing Durham’s $700 million agri-food sector. The new facility, operated by Sollio Agriculture, will provide direct export capacity for the region’s farmers to get their product to global markets. This new facility is leveraging

Oshawa’s location and transportation strengths, and the close connection between the port and 400-series highways.

Now as part of an amalgamated southern Ontario port network, the Port of Oshawa is better positioned to help customers access real estate and transportation services.

“The Port of Oshawa is part of what makes Durham Region an excellent place to start or grow a business,” said Jeremy Dunn,VP Commercial at HOPA Ports.

In its concerted effort to drive developer investment, Scugog, in partnership with Durham Region Economic Development and Tourism, unveiled a new web-based real estate tool for investors in May 2019. As an online, interactive guide, the tool provides site-selection information and resources for investors who are looking for industrial and commercial investment opportunity. It also includes key economic strengths, within the municipality, to attract investment. All of this is available through an interactive webbased interface: INscugog.ca.

Township of Scugog Chief Administrative Officer, Paul Allore wants to see Scugog attract the right kind of investment: “We are very excited for the township to be the first in Durham Region to offer this interactive tool for developers. We are a small community, close to Highway 407 and GTA. We have an amazing support system here with our partners at Durham Region and within our local business community. We know once investors see our potential, they’ll want to be in Scugog.”

The web-based guide targets investment in three key areas of the township: 1. The Port Perry Business Park (Port Perry Employment Lands): features several site opportunities west of the town of Port Perry, with immediate access to the Trans-Canada Highway.

The location is only 13 minutes from Highway 407, and the township is offering incentives for development through a Community Improvement Plan.

2. Historic downtown Port Perry: a huge draw for visitors, residents and business owners who are looking for a

3. The Commercial Centre or the Smart Centres site: located between Highway 7A and Scugog Line 6. Many commercial businesses are already housed here, within proximity to other core areas of the township.

Filling a Defined Gap in Durham Region’s Innovation Ecosystem A Profile of Technology Accelerator, 1855 Whitby

F

unding is essential to get a business started and keep it growing.

But, beyond that, there are three additional key factors that contribute to the progress of any established organization looking to advance on a larger scale: 1. Learning from industry experts.

2. Finding the right mentors.

3. B eing part of a powerful, connected network.

Together, these factors provide access to the resources that minimize the cost of running a business venture. Business incubators provide the capital required to get off the ground and accomplish early successes. But what happens after that?

Fledgling businesses still need the right support to evolve, expand and perhaps even diversify. A business accelerator is, thus, in many ways, akin to a business school for a new enterprise. It fills the gap between that period of incubation and the expansion and evolution thereafter.

This strategic initiative—funded by the Town of Whitby and the CEO of local tech industry leader 360insights—is the first and only technology accelerator in Durham Region. Its aim: to fill a defined gap in the region’s innovation ecosystem.

The vision for 1855 Whitby is to provide support for established high potential tech companies to “accelerate” growth and land within the Region; expanding the Eastern Innovation Corridor, from Pickering to Kingston.

On September 27, a high-profile thought leadership series was launched called, “1855 MASTERCLASS.” Presented by Durham Region’s Economic Development and Tourism Division, this best-in-class series features industry leaders with a proven track record of disruption in their areas of expertise. Plus, it outlines defined strategies to achieve and drive growth.

“We believe this will shine a light on the Region as a leader in delivering thoughtleadership excellence; positioning Durham as the “go to” place to run, do and celebrate business,” explains Stephanie Mann, CEO, 1855 Whitby.

1855 MASTERCLASS will also extend this resource beyond the Region to the broader tech community. The Town of Whitby, Ontario Tech University, and Durham College are also supporting partners of this series.

Discover the diverse and exciting dining scene in Durham Region By: Agatha Podgorski

L

ess than an hour from Toronto, you’ll find a plethora of farm-to-table focused food experiences.

Eating in Durham Region is always a surprising experience. There’s a close connection to farmland in most every town you visit thanks to richness of the surrounding countryside. The area is home to a whopping seven large farmers’ markets and countless farms that grow everything from sweet summer corn to autumn apples.

Over the last decade, many big city chefs have migrated to the region in search of a fresh perspective and a closer connection to where their food comes from.

Nowhere is that connection more evident than at Bistro ’67 at Durham College. The restaurant is the intersection point between its agriculture and hospitality students. They grow much of what Chef Raul Sojo and his students serve in the garden’s steps from the front door – think tomatillos, heirloom hot peppers, Chinese long eggplants and fresh, plump raspberries.

The college is also home to a teaching orchard, a cheese-making lab and apiaries that supply the restaurant with honey.

At KB Food, there’s farm animalthemed graffiti on the walls and a long bar laden with craft spirits and locally-brewed beers on the tap rail. Chef Kevin Brown, the restaurant’s name sake, is driven to cook with the seasons so much so that he changes the menu almost daily. In fact, he recently bought a farm to supply the restaurant with heritage turkeys, hard-tofind heirloom vegetables and fresh greens. If you eat one meal here, let it be brunch.

Meanwhile, in Uxbridge, the team at The Urban Pantry are foraging puff balls and fermenting vegetables to serve alongside their seasonally changing menu. They also deliver their delicious concoctions to The Second Wedge Brewery down the road where you can sip craft beers, devour a bison burger and play a game of backgammon or two. In the summer months, the brewery’s patio plays host to countless foodies, so arrive early.

In Pickering, you’ll want to spend some time on the waterfront patio at PORT. Recently renovated, PORT is the sister restaurant to celebrated Toronto restaurant Maple Leaf Tavern. With chef Jesse Vallins at the helm, they serve refined patio fair and sling a mean cocktail. Fun fact:Vallins has a unique flair for sausage-making and has been named Toronto’s Sausage League Champion three times!

Other places worth a road trip are Butchie’s, Food Network Chef Andrea Nicholson’s new spot – and home of the region’s best fried chicken; Buster Rhino’s Southern BBQ, for, you guessed it, piles of authentic Southern BBQ; and Patois Jamaican Restaurant for quality, unpretentious jerk.

In the warmer months, festivals and events like the Harvest Dinners at Nature’s Bounty Farm, the Pickering Food Truck Festival and Brock’s Big Bite bring the community together for good food and good times. At any one of these festivals, it’s easy to see why so many great restaurants have chosen to call Durham Region home.
