Combining the Ethics of the Past With a Passion for Innovation

oehringer Ingelheim is a different kind of company. Founded more than 130 years ago, it is one of the world’s top 20 pharmaceutical companies. The story of Suzy is just one example.

Suzy began smoking when she was 16 and continued for more than 60 years.

When she was in her 80s, she began to experience shortness of breath. Her doctor told her to throw away the cigarettes and trade them in for inhalers – but those inhalers didn’t work for her. Suzy couldn’t even walk down the hall of her apartment without feeling winded. Then she was prescribed a Boehringer Ingelheim product for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a lung disease that involves difficulty breathing, fatigue and impaired quality of life. With her new treatment, Suzy can breathe more easily and now walk around as much as she wants – around her apartment, down the street and even out with her daughters. Suzy is back to doing the things that matter most to her.

Skilled Employment Base is Expecting Major Growth

urlington, ranked at #5 by MoneySense Magazine (2014) as the best medium -sized city in all of Canada, is one of the thriving cities located in the Regional Municipality with a population of 183,0001 (Statistics Canada, Census 2016).

Transforming Joseph Brant Hospital One Step at a Time In August 2017, Joseph Brant Hospital celebrated a milestone in healthcare with the opening of the Michael Lee-Chin & Family Patient Tower.

B

ut the work to bring a new hospital that will meet the needs of our community now, and for generations to come is not over. With programs and services moving to the

new South Tower, renovations in the original North Tower began.

Among the areas receiving significant renovations are the Ambulatory Care Centre and the Diagnostic Imaging Unit.

The Ambulatory Care Centre focuses on providing care on an outpatient basis, enhancing the level of service offered right here in Burlington. The department has been planned with standardized room layouts to support maximum flexibility of use.

Existing clinics, which are currently located across the hospital will be co-located in the new Ambulatory Care Centre including: General Internal Medicine and Rapid Assessment Clinic (GIMRAC)

The GIMRAC provides more appropriate care for individuals who require timely assessment, but not necessarily emergency care. The GIMRAC staff includes a general internal medicine physician, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, social work, dietician and pharmacist.

Fracture Clinic

Patients in our community are seen by an Orthopedic Surgeon for care of acute orthopedic injury and follow up.

Pre-Operative Planning

Patients are either seen in the clinic by a Registered Nurse or have a telephone interview for assessment prior to their upcoming Surgery. Patients may have additional testing or be seen by an Anesthetist if required. Pre-operative Interviews also allow for patients to ask questions and receive educational information related to their Surgery.

Patients are seen by Vascular Surgeons for Pre and Post op assessments.

Dr. John Rawlinson, Chief of Radiology at Joseph Brant Hospital explain the benefits of the new CT Scanner at Joseph Brant Hospital For Diagnostic Imaging, the renovations will see the unit’s physical space grow by almost 2.5 times its current size providing increased capacity.

This renovation will also additional and updated technology and improved patient flow.

“The modernized new diagnostic imaging department will allow us to better serve a wider spectrum of patient needs,” said Dr John Rawlinson, Chief of Radiology. “Diagnostic imaging services for our outpatients will be on one level, to maximize efficiency and patient centred care.”

b u r l i n g t o n When the new space is complete next summer, there will be dedicated inpatient and outpatient flow pathways for increased patient privacy, to include a dedicated Women’s Imaging Centre complete with a separate registration, waiting room and entrance.

With the renovations, Joseph Brant Hospital is equipping these spaces with state-of-the-art technology and capacity to provide better quality care sooner.

“With the equipment we are using and the facility we are building, we will have the tools to provide the best care possible,” said John Heikoop, Manager, Diagnostic Imaging & Medical Diagnostic Unit. “We are offering the care of larger regional hospitals closer to home.”

The new technology is attracting the best physicians and staff, who are at the heart of the department. “We have incredible staff, who are dedicated to care,” said Dr Rawlinson. “The strength of what we do is related to these individuals, and the support of our community.”

Work Global Stay Local Business analytics is powering the decisions of TransUnion Canada customers and, in turn, fuelling the strong growth of the Burlington-based company.

n just the last year alone, TransUnion Canada has hired 70 of its 270 employees at its Harvester Road location, its Canadian headquarters. That means 26 per cent of current employees have been hired within the last 12 months.

The company may be best known to the public as a credit reporting agency, but it is a much broader information solutions company delivering data analytics and expertise to consumers and businesses.

These are just a few of the advantages working in the DeGroote School of Business’ favour, when it comes to attracting MBA candidates.

hroughout the past decade, DeGroote has emerged as a major player in Ontario’s crowded and highly-competitive MBA market. With an ambitious price point and strong reputational advantage, the return on investment is seen as high and compelling among prospective students. ROI is always a chief concern in business, of course.

The fact that McMaster University is now the third-ranked university in Canada and 66th in the world (Academic Ranking of World Universities 2017) is also a huge boon for the DeGroote MBA program.

“Less than a third of the MBA candidates we attract have an undergraduate degree in business,” Wiesner continues. “We admit students with backgrounds in engineering,

science, health sciences, the humanities, and several other disciplines. They come here because they know DeGroote will help them achieve their career goals.”

The School’s MBA program, which currently offers Full-time and Co-op streams, has been based at Burlington’s Ron Joyce Centre since 2010. The fourstorey building, punctuated with glass and natural light, is located just off the Queen Elizabeth Way between Appleby and Walkers Line. Regular shuttle service is available to and from McMaster’s main campus in Hamilton.

“ MBA Onboarding Week to DeGroote’s Health Leadership Academy (HLA), Executive MBA in Digital Transformation (EMBA), and Digital Transformation Research Centre (DTRC), along with the Directors College.

It’s situated in what Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring refers to as the city’s “Prosperity Corridor,” complete with major highway access, multiple connection points to GO Transit, and proximity to a labour force of more than two million people within the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. One of the world’s busiest commercial and financial centres is in the School’s backyard.

Last year, in an effort to enhance the overall MBA experience, DeGroote staff and faculty combined best practices from across North America with a suite of innovative curriculum design principles. The resulting reforms – such as cohort classes, integrated case studies, and a series of foundation weeks – were based on insights from current students, alumni, faculty, and key industry partners. The goal is to deliver an educational experience that will transform business and society.

“The foundation weeks, in particular, introduce critical business skills and principles to new students at the outset of the program,” Wiesner explains.

“As a result, students begin their MBA journey with the foundation to succeed in the classroom, at their co-op jobs, and in their leadership and networking activities.”

The School’s MBA Co-op stream, one of the leading programs of its kind in Canada, places students directly in the heart of the action via three work terms over 28 months. DeGroote maintains relationships with dozens of top employer partners – including the likes of 3M, Deloitte, BMO, RBC, KPMG, PepsiCo, Samsung, Xerox, Whirlpool, Canadian Tire, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health – and a wide variety of positions are regularly available. Many of these work terms are based in Toronto’s Financial District. Co-op students can also use work term salaries to help pay for their tuition, and employer partners are known to hire students directly from the School.

Outside the classroom, DeGroote MBA students are encouraged to participate in as many extracurricular activities as possible. “The MBA program offers various opportunities for experiential learning, including the MBA Association, student clubs, case competitions, and the DeGroote Leadership Development Program,” offers Lea Matulovic, President of the DeGroote MBA Association from 2015 to 2017.

A DeGroote Commerce alumna who has taken part in numerous MBA case competitions across Canada, she’s currently employed as an Associate, Cross Business Structuring, with BMO Capital Markets in Toronto. She will finish her MBA soon. “Involvement in initiatives outside the classroom provides balance to students’ busy academic schedules,” Matulovic continues. “It allows them to network with peers and industry professionals.”

In 2016, the Co-op stream graduated 102 students, who commanded an average salary of $71,930 upon entering the marketplace. Roughly 40 percent went on to find employment

in banking, capital markets, or financial services, while the remainder pursued careers in healthcare, biotech, pharma, marketing, consulting, and other sectors. On the Full-time side, 84 students finished the MBA program in 2016, and went on to earn an average salary of $60,125. They too have enjoyed early career success in banking, capital markets, or financial services, but also in consumer packaged goods, retail, consulting, technology, and communications.

So what’s next for DeGroote’s MBA program? A proposal for a Part-time blended MBA is currently undergoing review by various McMaster and provincial bodies. The School anticipates approval by early 2018, and is tentatively aiming for a fall launch. The Part-time program’s blended learning approach will include both online and inresidence components, focusing on work-integrated learning that leverages real-world experiences. In the meantime, the School is actively pursuing the best and brightest candidates from across Ontario and beyond for its Full-time and Co-op streams.

Local Companies Thriving Through Innovation and Creativity Burlington is frequently recognized as a great place to live but it’s also a fantastic place to do business for everything from start-ups to multigenerational businesses.

Hunter Amenities Hunter Amenities licenses and manufactures fragrances and hair and skin products that are used by hotels, airlines and retailers, including Costco, Shoppers Drug Mart, Urban Outfitters and Sephora.

The company employs 500-plus worldwide, with more than 250 at its corporate headquarters in Burlington.

“We produce about 200 million units a year, or close to 1 million units a day, out of our 250,000-square-foot manufacturing plant that we built in 2000,” said president John Hunter, who founded the company in 1981.

“For running my business, I wouldn’t have thought of going anywhere else,” said Hunter, a Burlington native. “It is a sweet spot here. It’s a great location to reach the rest of the globe.”

Haltech and TechPlace

Cedarlane Labs Cedarlane Labs is a 60-year-old privately owned manufacturer and distributor of immunology-based research products used in hospitals and universities.

The company employs about 100 people in Burlington many of whom are locally educated and live in the city.

“Community, business and culture are what makes living and doing business in Burlington so special. Cedarlane has been a part of Burlington for over a quarter of a century and we are here to stay,” said vice-president John Course.

Hospitals and universities in the GTHA are among Cedarlane’s largest customers.

Strong highway access and a partnership with Fed Ex’s Burlington depot are key because Cederlane accepts 100-plus shipments and sends out 200 to 400 shipments each day.

Haltech Regional Innovation Centre has helped more than 700 entrepreneurs and start-ups launch, grow and scale up their businesses since 2011. Part of the Ontario Network of Entrepreneurs, Haltech provides business advisory services to 130 active member companies, along with entrepreneurial workshops and skills training.

Member companies are partnered with six entrepreneurs in residence, established and experienced businesspeople who act as coaches and mentors and help start-ups execute a strategy, grow quickly and adapt to growth opportunities, said Carlini.

Haltech is a key anchor, along with the Angel One Investor Network, in TechPlace, Burlington’s one-stop

innovation and incubation hub for tech companies that opened in June. It is operated by Burlington Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) and offers office space, hot desks, meeting and event space, along with a wide range of business resources. servicePath, a fast-growing software maker that helps technology companies with complex quoting, was the first company to take residence in TechPlace.

“There are a lot of talented people who live in the area and great educational institutions nearby produce a steady stream of top-notch graduates. Cynthia Zahoruk Architects Home Grown Architect Thriving in Burlington

T

here was no doubt Cynthia Zahoruk would grow up to be an architect.

“One of the first memories I have is creating towns in my sandbox. I made houses and roads for my Matchbox cars,” says Burlington native Zahoruk, who grew up to own Cynthia Zahoruk Architects in her hometown.

“I always wanted to be an architect as long as I can remember.”

Zahoruk most often works in the residential sector, including custom homes, renovations and additions, apartment buildings, seniors developments and affordable housing. But she also designs commercial and institutional buildings.

“We are always busy. Work never really slows down. So many people want to live and work in Burlington,” she said.

Her work is found across Burlington, Hamilton, Milton and Oakville. Her firm has won several awards from the Ontario Home Builders assocation, Hamilton Burlington Society of Architects and City of Hamilton.

She studied architecture at the University of Waterloo and as a student worked at several architectural firms in Burlington, Oakville and Hamilton while earning her degree.

Zahoruk opened her own practice early in her career. Her father, a Burlington lawyer, had shown her the example – and the hard work – of owning your own business.

For years, she was a one-woman show, working out of her house and raising

Zahoruk works with clients right from the initial “wish list” consultations, through architectural design, gathering planning approvals and permits from the municipalities, and helping clients secure a contractor and other consultants. She even consults with potential clients before they buy a property.

She thrives on all aspects of her job, from the logistics and budgets and scheduling to the “fun part of making and shaping spaces.” She loves the pressure of deadlines and that every project is entirely different and new.

Working on residential projects is particularly satisfying for Zahoruk.

“In the end, we want these spaces to make people feel good. The home is really the centre of life for most people and it should be a well designed space.”

Architects need to know building science and structure, keep up with new construction products and processes and constantly upgrade their skills. Zahoruk is just fine with that. She would rather read a technical building book than any fiction novel.

She’s building her own home in the rural area of Burlington – the sixth time she’s been both architect and client. It gives her invaluable insight.

“My clients appreciate that I’ve been through the same experience they’re going through.”

“I always knew I wanted to practise locally. It’s satisfying to drive by buildings I’ve designed and watching people enjoy the building when it is completed.”

Zahoruk says development drives the economy, keeps taxes low, provides more housing options, and brings new people and excitement to the community, even if it’s sometimes controversial.

“Development is an important part of making the engine of the economy run and making Burlington successfull.”

Mohawk College Mirrors Rapid Transformation in Advanced Manufacturing

M

ohawk College has been training job-ready skilled workers for the crucial manufacturing sector in southern Ontario for 50 years.

“Mohawk is pivotal to providing the talent for Burlington’s Industry”, said Frank McKeown, Executive Director of the Burlington Economic Development Corporation. “If you go into any Burlington Manufacturing Plant, half the people there were trained at Mohawk. The college is a critical part of developing talent and delivering talent into the local economy”, he added.

Industry has seen massive transformations and the pace of change is only exponentially accelerating, says Dean of Engineering Technology David Santi.

Mohawk is now so attuned to what’s happening that it is gearing up curriculum shifts in advance of changes coming to the shop floor, he says. That results in being able to deliver graduates who are consistently job-ready.

“That is important because the window is small. Many times it’s a vertical take-off. There was a longer

runway to prepare for the pace of technological change in the past. It’s coming so fast now that agility is paramount.”

Mohawk is a leader in engineering technology education and the largest trainer of apprentices in Ontario.

This year, the College will graduate close to 1,000 students in engineering technology. A majority will go into an advanced manufacturing environment, says George Miltenburg, Associate Dean of Engineering Technology.

Mohawk is also the platform for retraining and skills upgrades for the existing labour force in an advanced manufacturing sector dependent on continuous lifelong learning.

Mohawk’s mission to make its students job-ready means “we are constantly examining what makes a graduate most attractive to an employer; what makes them stand out,” said Santi.

Students are trained on the latest equipment and processes in Mohawk’s cutting-edge technology labs, including additive manufacturing and robotics. The College has partnered with suppliers of advanced manufacturing technology and

equipment that power factories all over the world.

“In southern Ontario, advanced manufacturing has a pressing need to improve productivity, quality and delivery times. In order to do that, we need to apply different ways of thinking,” said Santi.

That requires employing machine learning and sophisticated data intelligence to strive for constant improvement. Technology allows for constant, real-time information in performance dashboards that can be quickly analyzed to make immediate adjustments to maximize efficiency.

That may mean something as simple as predicting the failure of a pump and repairing it before it causes a costly shutdown of a production line, says Santi. Multiply that by the thousands of components in a factory setting and the complexity and importance of data collection is crystal clear.

“Where Mohawk comes in is that medium to smaller companies can use the College as a learning lab to understand industrial processes and equipment, and help with diagnostics and testing and

redesigns to improve efficiencies and competitiveness,” said Santi.

The College is the process of building a mini factory that will virtually link six to eight labs to simulate the departments in a factory setting. Data will be collected in the cloud and presented on performance dashboards to recreate the daily operations of a manufacturing facility.

“We have industrial partners, major multinationals on board, who are eager to get it off the ground,” said Miltenburg. “It’s an opportunity to showcase their latest equipment in an industrial setting. Mohawk becomes their showroom for local manufacturers.”

Santi and Miltenburg know of no other educational institution doing anything like it.

Leading the partnerships are Siemens and FANUC, both giants in industrial automation, and Cisco, a leader in information networks. Students can earn certifications embedded in the curriculum and graduates are prepared to write external exams to earn industrial certificates.

That allows graduates to immediately work in any plants using those platforms, while ensuring Mohawk is always meeting rapidly evolving standards of industry, says Miltenburg.

“At one time, we had years to make shifts” said Santi. “It’s now sometimes happening in months.”
