Earlier this year, we broke ground on the Hurontario Light Rail Transit (LRT), a project that is critical to the future success of our City that will create thousands of jobs, support new housing and business opportunities, and form the north-south spine of a regionaltransit system. Bonnie Brown, director of the Economic Development Office at the City of Mississauga, answered five questions about the future direction of the city’s economic development.

What are Mississauga’s economic strengths?

Mississauga is home to more than 95,000 small businesses representing 99 per cent of our business community and more than half of all employment. We are also lucky to have more than 1,400 multinational corporations and 76 Fortune 500 companies.

We have a skilled, diverse and talented labour force and access to a labour pool of over 4.3 million people, nearly half of Ontario’s labour force, within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Seventy per cent of Mississauga’s labour force has postsecondary education.

Our sectors of strength and focus are: advanced manufacturing; higher value business services; life sciences; and smart logistics.

COVID-19 poses great challenges, but we have robust and comprehensive recovery strategies to support and rebuild our economy in the short, medium and long terms.

Life with Autism: From diagnosis to treatment to planning for a brighter future.

Y

ou never forget the date your child is diagnosed with a lifelong condition. My daughter Heera was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) on November 22, 2017, a date that forever changed our life. A few months before her second birthday, we noticed she wasn’t reaching several milestones expected at her age. Our family visited our pediatrician to discuss and inquire about the signs we noticed. Heera was having a difficult time hearing us, she was often distracted, and there was a lack of eye contact and name recognition. As a parent, there are certain gut feelings you can’t shake off. We knew there was something different in her behaviour that we needed to address. After several assessments with our pediatrician, we were referred to ErinoakKids, a centre for child development.

We had spent almost a year lost, with a lack of answers and more than our fair share of confusion and frustration. We were at a

loss in what next steps to take to give Heera the right opportunities to help her live her best life as a kid. This all changed when we met with the staff at ErinoakKids. Talking to the staff lifted a weight off our shoulders.

They walked us through a personalized plan made for Heera. Our family has been involved every step of the way and in all major decisions to support Heera’s development.

ErinoakKids provided Heera with speech therapy sessions where she developed eye contact, learned language through scripting, improved her communication skills, and became more socially interactive with other children, which has been so rewarding to watch. We have received services through the Essential Foundations program that gave us access to a clinician who visited our home twice a week and worked with Heera to strengthen her skills in the environment she was most comfortable in – our home. Even now, she continues to receive support as she

is currently enrolled in the ABA classroom where she is able to learn group readiness skills and build on the skills she previously learned. The group setting promotes socialization and her ability to generalize her skills to her peers. Personalized visits from our clinician and supportive conversations with the staff have given us, as parents, the critical and developmental skills we need to support Heera in our everyday routines at home and outside.

Throughout our journey, ErinoakKids has felt like our extended family, there with us every step of the way. With the COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve offered us contactless Virtual Care support online or safe and distanced on-site support at their centre.

We recently chose to resume services in centre, and Heera has loved being back on site to see her clinician and her friends, in a safe manner. Heera’s communication skills have excelled due to her early diagnosis, her enrollment at ErinoakKids and getting

her the right support. We are grateful for the passionate clinicians and therapists, who have provided a safe haven for Heera and thousands of other children who need the support and resources to help them succeed in life. Because of ErinoakKids, Heera’s future is so much brighter.

UTM’s New Principal Poised for Challenges Ahead

P

Gillespie strives to foster a culture of wellness, excellence and inclusion that meets people where they are.

An expert on the 14th-century poet Geoffrey Chaucer, Gillespie joined UTM as an assistant professor in 2004. She has since won UTM’s Award for Undergraduate Teaching Excellence, chaired the Department of English & Drama in a period of remarkable growth, and acted as Vice-Presidential Special Advisor, Research. She founded the Jackman Humanities Institute’s tricampus Digital Humanities Network and, as director of the Old Books New Science Lab, has garnered over $2.5 million in international research funding.

rofessor Alexandra Gillespie became Principal of the University of Toronto Mississauga—the first female Principal in the campus’ five-decade history—on July 1. An internationally renowned researcher, award-winning teacher and dynamic and creative leader, Gillespie assumed, concurrently, the role of Vice President, University of Toronto.

Her five-year term started amidst a pandemic, at a challenging time for both the university and the broader community. Under her leadership, UTM continues to adapt, making health and safety its highest priority while maintaining the exceptional quality of education at Canada’s top-ranked university. Now, as always,

Since assuming her new role, Gillespie has become an active member of Mississauga’s Economic Resiliency Task Force and a sector lead for education and non-profit on the Mississauga Board of Trade’s Economic Recovery Group. Here, she capitalizes on a broad skillset. Prior to her graduate studies at Oxford, Gillespie worked as a management consultant in New Zealand’s education sector.

Gillespie is honoured, thrilled and ready to lead UTM. “This is a challenging time for folks at UTM, as it is for everyone,” she notes. “But our community is resilient, and our outstanding students, staff, teachers and researchers are poised to transform Canada and the world.”

Creativity Fuels UTM’s Response to Pandemic

T

he world has changed irrevocably over the last seven months, and U of T Mississauga has transformed dramatically as well. Forced to rapidly shift to online learning in March due to COVID-19, the UTM community has demonstrated remarkable innovation, resilience and creativity.

Here is a selection of the many ways UTM has stepped up to meet the challenges presented by the pandemic:

David Samson turned to Twitch. The video game live-streaming platform supports building communities around a shared interest. “One thing I feel makes my in-person classes engaging is my energy, and I was afraid I’d lose that online,” says Samson, who is also a gamer.

Samson, who has found live streaming with students enjoyable, has made tweaks to improve the Twitch experience, based on student feedback.

Computerized fossils

Virtual campus

Armed with 3D scanners, researchers are digitizing hundreds of anthropology specimens for students who can’t access bone casts and fossils in-person due to the pandemic. The 3D digital models imitate the physical specimens, with students able to turn them, zoom in on points of interest and note surface details.

The newly digitized collection, which can be used as a virtual textbook, will be available to augment hands-on learning when labs re-open. The 3D digital models can also be used by professors for tests and exams, and even by researchers out in the field.

A small group of students has been working diligently to recreate, in exacting detail, the UTM campus in the popular video game Minecraft for fellow students who miss being on campus. The team has built a virtual replica of Deerfield Hall and is now working on other campus buildings.

Team member Jonathan Ho says it may be some time before students can return to the physical campus. This project provides opportunities for virtual campus events and virtual campus tours. Students might even host a show or fireworks in the virtual environment, he adds.

“Anything is possible.”

Wearable compost heap There may come a time when the next shirt you buy is made of rotten bananas or mouldy bread. That may sound gross, but the future of fashion depends on the use of biodegradable and carbon-neutral materials, says Avneet Ghotra, a 2018 UTM alumna and co-founder of ALT TEX, a start-up that is part of UTM’s ICUBE business incubator.

With a recent $30,000 infusion from the Lo Family Social Venture Fund, Ghotra is in the lab, working with discarded apples to create a polylactic acid-based fabric that is strong, durable, decomposable and cost-effective.

Housing Affordability is a High Priority for Mississauga

I

n Mississauga, the cost of housing is increasingly becoming beyond reach for many middle income households.

Middle income households play an integral role in the City’s growth since they form a substantial part of the workforce.

Typically, however, these households are not eligible for funding from senior levels of government yet they also struggle to find affordable ownership or rental housing suitable for their needs in the market.

Mississauga’s middle income households earn $58,000 to $108,000 per year and can typically afford to purchase a home at $420,000 or less, whereas the average sale price of a resale home in Mississauga in 2020 is $875,000. Renter households can afford up to $1,600 per month, hardly enough to rent a bachelor apartment in Mississauga’s rental market.

The jurisdictional responsibility for housing in Mississauga falls to the Region of Peel which in the past has primarily supported low income households.

However, housing affordability for all households is a priority for the City.

When Mississauga City Council adopted Making Room for the Middle (2017) – Mississauga’s first Housing Strategy – it used available municipal tools to protect existing affordable housing and sought out partnerships to increase the supply of new housing for middle income households.

For example, Mississauga has recently prioritized securing affordable housing as a community benefit contribution for all large development proposals. Looking forward, the City will be implementing inclusionary zoning, a planning tool that allows municipalities to require the inclusion of affordable housing units in new developments that are close to transit. Mississauga is also exploring an incentive program for affordable rental housing development. Purpose-built rental housing provides tenants with greater long-term stability compared with rented condominium units.

Delivering affordable housing is complex and requires the support of many partners. Mississauga continues to work collaboratively with all levels of government and stakeholders to create a supportive environment for housing developers to provide housing. The City supports and promotes the Region of Peel in their housing efforts, such as the My Home Second Unit Renovation Program (Oct 2020 launch), which is a loan and forgivable grant program for homeowners looking to renovate their second / basement suite, and the affordable rental housing incentive program (2021 launch), a program to encourage new, affordable purpose-built rental housing. A great example of a recent partnership is the Peel affordable housing project completed with Daniels Corporation at 360 City Centre Drive. The development provides 174 units of affordable housing, and received funding from the Canada-Ontario Investment in Affordable Housing (IAH) agreement, as

well as $2.7 million in funding from the City to offset the cost of development charges.

The City of Mississauga will continue to work with all levels of government to promote housing affordability for everyone.

Closing the Gap between Business & Creativity: Mississauga Joins Digital Main Street’s ShopHERE program powered by Google

A

rtists included. This welcoming message convinced hip hop artist Vivek Mehmi to apply for Digital Main Street’s ShopHERE program powered by Google supported by the Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre (MBEC).

“I probably wouldn’t have applied if they hadn’t said the program was open to artists,” Mehmi explains. “A lot of artists don’t see themselves as business people, but during COVID, everyone is going through a hard time and people are turning to art and to artists to enrich their lives. It’s important to learn to see your art as a means of support, as a business, because it’s

part of seeing yourself as relevant to the cultural fabric.”

It was not a revelation that came easily.

Mehmi’s entire strategy for connecting his music with his fans and growing his audience had to change.

“Prior to COVID, I was gearing up for an events-based business this year. I had planned live appearances at festivals and scheduled other performances,” Mehmi remembers. “When everything had to change, my idea of just how to do it was fragmented. Before ShopHERE, I wasn’t sure how to generate any income at all.”

Digital Main Street’s ShopHERE Program powered by Google provides independent small businesses and artists with a quick, easy and no-cost way to get selling online. The program offers access to free one-to-one support from ecommerce experts to help businesses sell their work or services online. Funded by the Federal Government of Canada through the

Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, Province of Ontario and key corporate partners.

Through his involvement in the ShopHERE program, Mehmi received hands-on help to build and launch a Shopify store to monetize his web site at www.vivekmehmi.com. Mehmi’s line of t-shirts, tank tops and buttons that reflect his brand are now available through the e-commerce platform.

Since getting the shop up and running, Mehmi continues to work with an MBEC consultant to flesh out his business plan, expand the shop, and develop marketing and outreach strategies. The process has introduced the musician to essential business concepts and skills.

“In September alone I started learning about analytics, had my first experience with drop shipping and started selling world-wide,” Mehmi says. “The sessions I’ve been doing with MBEC have taught

MBEC really helped to close the gap for me.”

Helping Small Business Go Digital

I

n a technological age that demands efficiency, creativity, accessibility and a strong customer-centred approach, the City of Mississauga is re-launching, for the second year, the Digital Service Squad (DSS) Program to support local main street businesses and support businesses impacted

by COVID-19.

The City’s DSS helps businesses become more tech-savvy in promoting and growing their business.The DSS consists of digital technology specialists who work with local Business Improvement Area Associations (BIAs) to support main street storefront small business owners to enhance their digital presence.This includes helping them adopt digital tools and technologies to attract new clients, improve the way their goods and services are being marketed and sold, and compete globally.

The Digital Service Squad was made possible through a $67,500 grant awarded

to the City by FedDev Ontario and the Province of Ontario, in partnership with the Toronto Association of Business Improvement Areas (TABIA) and the Ontario Business Improvement Area Association (OBIAA).

Mississauga’s Digital Service Squad is hitting the streets ready to help main street small businesses bridge the technical gaps needed to promote to a larger audience and gain a competitive advantage.The Squad will further the City of Mississauga’s commitment to support inclusive growth and provide guidance to help businesses endure the impacts of COVID-19 and beyond.

The Digital Service Squad is part of the City of Mississauga’s Business Enterprise Centre that provides guidance and support to help entrepreneurs and small business owners start and grow their small business.

Perspective Smart City Technology Helps Mississauga Residents and Businesses Thrive TM

As a Smart City, Mississauga continues to be a leader in innovation.

B

uilding a city for the future means building a city for everybody, and the City of Mississauga has developed a Smart City Master Plan (2019) to do just that. Since its endorsement, great progress has been made to help residents and businesses thrive using technology. This year, the City introduced several Smart City initiatives to enhance quality of life, reduce the city’s digital divide and help make Mississauga an inclusive, accessible city for all.

Access to free Wi-Fi. An additional 200 outdoor hotspots were enabled across the city in April. This allows all residents to access online resources and stay connected with their community.

Computer access for youth. The City donated 100 gently used Cityowned laptops each to the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board and the Peel District School Board in September to support youth who do not have access to computers. Through this partnership with the school boards, donations will take place on a yearly basis. The City is also working on expanding its laptop lending program through the Library to further reduce the city’s digital divide.

Redesigned City Website. The City’s new website has been redesigned to be inclusive and accessible for people of all abilities and supports the use of assistive technology. By visiting Mississauga.ca, residents have access to improved online services and the information and resources that they need to stay connected and informed.

Engaging Youth at the Smart City Open Data Challenge. In October, youth will participate in the City’s first online Open Data Challenge event. Here they will learn from industry leaders and develop ideas that use data and technology to assist the City. Participating youth will be given opportunities to learn, expand their professional networks and demonstrate their skills and leadership abilities.

Smart City technology will help build the city of the future. It is already being integrated into the design of the Brightwater and Lakeview Village Communities to establish these areas as leaders in Smart City innovation. It will

This digital ecosystem will highlight Mississauga as a forerunner in the use of technology to support the economy by providing business-to-business opportunities for collaboration.

Mississauga’s Downtown: An Urban Centre on the Rise

S

omething big is happening in Mississauga’s Downtown and it’s causing a wave of excitement with the recent unveiling of Oxford Properties Group and Alberta Investment Management Corporation’s plan for the largest mixed-use downtown development in Canadian history - Square One District. The overall development plan will, overtime, transform 130-acres around the Square One Shopping Centre into an 18 million square foot master planned mixeduse neighbourhood that will contribute to the evolution of Mississauga’s Downtown as envisioned by the City’s Downtown 21 Master Plan. This development along with the recent expansion of Sheridan College and other major landowners’ developments that are under construction, or in the pipeline, will contribute to the transformation of Downtown Mississauga into a true urban centre and lifestyle destination where people connect, work and grow.

Oxford’s 37 towers are planned with a total of 18,000 residential units capable of accommodating 35,000 residents, more than half will be rental apartments.

Integrated into the design will be green space, shopping, restaurants, entertainment, and transit networks.

OFFICE DEVELOPMENT

Office space will play an important role in turning Square One District into a true, large-scale mixed-use project. Oxford’s

19-storey, 42,075m2 gross floor area office tower, will be the first of many office commercial developments in the Downtown that will be the spark that ignites Mississauga’s Downtown to become a major business centre that attracts investment and creates employment opportunities in a diversity of sectors.

Creating a vibrant and expanding employment base is a critical component of a thriving and sustainable downtown. To further attract office development in the downtown, the City of Mississauga created a Downtown Community Improvement Plan (CIP) that allows the City to consider granting incentives that include: Tax Increment Equivalent Grant (TIEG), Development Processing Fees Rebate, Municipally Funded Parking Program, and Municipal Property Acquisition and Disposition.

an ideal location for office development and tenants. Located in the heart of the GTA, the Downtown offers an abundance of amenities and an active nightlife that attracts talent, direct routes to Pearson International Airport and transit connections to anywhere across the region.

FleetOptics Brings Innovation and Technology to Package Delivery

leetOptics already had big goals and high expectations heading into 2020.

Having recently been named one of Canada’s Top Growing companies by The Globe & Mail FleetOptics was poised to expand and increase its national footprint.

While the global pandemic has caused stress for many businesses, FleetOptics has flourished under a substantial increase in demand for its services.

FleetOptics origins began in Mississauga just five years ago and they have been at the forefront of innovating final mile delivery ever since. The ‘final mile’ is the last step before the package arrives at a customer’s door which is widely considered to be the most difficult step in the delivery supply chain.

With proprietary software systems, FleetOptics leverages technology and analytics to optimize delivery routes and ensure efficient package delivery. This sets them apart from legacy delivery companies in a regular year, and even more so in 2020.

Since the pandemic hit Canada in March, retail e-commerce sales have risen 99.3%, ballooning to record levels of $3.9 billion in May in Canada alone (IMI Research, Sept 2020). Many customers have had the experience of waiting weeks or months longer than expected for a package to be delivered. Leveraging their innovative technology, FleetOptics has maintained delivery times similar to preCOVID levels, despite record demand.

“We have a great group of clients. To better serve their customers, we realized we needed to expand beyond the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and provide a national footprint. We identified Vancouver and Montreal as the first two cities for us to expand to, based on our clients’ customer base” adds Mann.

An expanded footprint along with increased demand has required FleetOptics to rapidly grow its fleet of drivers. This Fall, they launched their first ever marketing campaign focused on attracting top quality drivers to join their team.

They can use their own cargo vehicles for deliveries, much like Uber drivers use their own vehicles for transport. In addition to using their own vehicles, drivers are equipped with technology from FleetOptics that optimizes their delivery routes and ultimately leads to efficient delivery routes. One of the many issues that plagues final mile delivery is

an unsuccessful first delivery attempt to customers which results in a subsequent attempt the next day. With FleetOptics proprietary software, first attempt delivery success rate remains at a staggering 99.5% across all markets.

FleetOptics is continuing to evolve and find new technological solutions to improve the final mile delivery process.

Sheridan College Continues its Expansion in Mississauga

S

heridan College students are gaining crucial 21st-century skills through practical, hands-on learning in the heart of Mississauga and its bustling economy.

The Hazel McCallion Campus (HMC), a fixture in the City of Mississauga’s downtown, has continued to expand since its opening in 2011. It’s home to 34 programs, including diplomas, degrees and graduate certificates offered by the Pilon School of Business (PSB).

There are many facets to the city’s economy, including a huge small business sector, alongside global leaders in advanced manufacturing, finance, supply chain, and health and medical, says Dr. Anne-Liisa Longmore, Dean of the PSB and Campus Principal of HMC. “We so value how we support our community and how our community supports what we do. There is so much diversity and innovation happening in Mississauga. Our industry and community partners provide opportunities to our learners in a real-world environment.”

A second wing opened at HMC in 2017, increasing enrolment capacity to more than 5,500 students and adding stateof-the-art classrooms, studios, labs and production spaces.

at Sheridan. A community-building sustainability initiative operating out of HMC is Sheridan’s Bike Hub. It encourages and facilitates commuting by cycling, offers bike rentals and repair services, and provides bike education and supports.

“We are always looking for innovative ways to bring students and staff to a greater understanding of how they can make a difference,” said Longmore.

HMC is now growing again, adding a 70,000-square-foot student and athletics building that will offer dynamic studentfocused spaces.

Sheridan flourishes in Mississauga thanks to strong relationships with the City of Mississauga, the Mississauga Board of Trade, and with local industry, says Longmore.

“The one thing that Sheridan has done from the beginning is focus on being a true partner within its community. We open our doors in a way that’s unique.

Community is part of our DNA.” HMC includes a number of special spaces, including EDGE, an entrepreneurship hub that boosts development of social enterprises through workshops, mentorship, training and supports, and co-op opportunities.

“EDGE has leveraged Sheridan’s creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship expertise and resources to support more than 200 ventures since opening our doors in Mississauga in 2017,” said Renee

Devereaux, Director of Entrepreneurship and Changemaking at EDGE. “We’re building the pipeline of impactfocused founders who want to develop healthier, more sustainable cities while contributing to the region’s economic development.”

Successful EDGE ventures include JointApp, which helps students navigate the immigration process and LinkMentalHealth, which connects people to mental health service providers.

“These platforms are game-changing and life-changing for those who need them,” said Longmore.

HMC’s Material ConneXion Library, the first of its kind in Canada, give students access to innovative and sustainable materials they can see and touch.

“I’ve seen intrigued students construct entire designs around a material, or change their designs in order to accommodate a material they love. It all starts with that sensory ‘aha’ moment,” said Patricia Buckley, Creative Campus and Diversity Liaison Librarian.

Finally, HMC’s Creative Campus Galleries showcases student and visiting artists’ work to build an appreciation of art, says Longmore. A current virtual exhibit displays 12 silk screens from Sheridan’s own collection.

or those who call Mississauga home, it’s not uncommon or usual to see film trucks, cameras or crews on your street or in your local neighbourhood. But could you recognize scenes featuring the city? Believe it or not, Mississauga is building quite the reputation within the film industry and can be seen in some of the biggest blockbusters and Netflix productions.

With an abundance of local talent, a growing number of film studios and countless number of shot-list locations, it’s no wonder why Mississauga checks all the boxes with filmmakers and is becoming THE place for filmmaking.

Mississauga’s Character Stands Out from the Crowd – Picture-Perfect Credentials As the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Vancouver spar in a friendly competition for the nickname “Hollywood North,” Mississauga’s alignment with filmmaking continues to grow. Word on the street says Mississauga is quickly earning its reputation as “Studio City North” – and for good reason! An example of the success of the programme is recent alumna Mallory Bond, who received the prestigious Schulich Leader national award. 20 top Canadian universities select 100 students each year as Schulich Leaders, who receive up to $100,000 to pursue an undergraduate degree in a STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) related programme. They also join an elite network and receive ongoing benefits.

Committed to the ideals of her alma mater, Mallory says, “…community-service is

about what kind of world you want to live in. I am honoured to have served with others at HNMCS and to join the Schulich Leadership network. I do not know what the long-term impact of our collective efforts will be. But even if only a couple of people carry a positive impact forward, we will all feel it.”
