Established this year, the clinic has access to a dynamic team of physicians (including a medical oncologist and surgeon), nurses and social workers who come together to support patients as they continue to heal and build their lives after cancer.

Led by Dr. Martin Chasen, Medical Oncologist and Palliative Care Physician at Osler, the clinic provides patients with integrated, high-quality care to meet the unique needs of these patients, as well as care that goes beyond monitoring to detect the recurrence of cancer.

An individualized care plan is developed for each patient’s ongoing treatment and monitoring needs.

In addition to monitoring the longterm effects of treatment, the clinic evaluates psychosocial effects such as anxiety and depression, and puts patients in touch with community programs for additional support as needed. Patients and their families also receive vital information and

To further support patients, a formal partnership with Wellspring Chinguacousy in Brampton, a community-based support centre, exists to ensure patients can access a variety of programs including exercise and nutrition as well as assistance with other issues, such as “brain fog.”

Once patients have been prepared for the transition to post-cancer life, they are referred back to their family physicians so they can continue to receive the necessary support. Educating family physicians about what to expect and look for on each patient case is key to the success of this transition. The clinic team will also see patients urgently should there be any suspicion of a recurrence of cancer.

Currently, all patients are referred to the clinic through Osler’s Oncology Department.

Osler surgical care among top 10% of North American hospitals Osler’s surgical program is among the top 10% of hospitals in North America, and was recognized recently by the American College of Surgeons.

Performing more than 61,000 surgeries a year, Osler’s multi-disciplinary surgical team has developed an innovative approach to surgical care and is emerging as a leader among North American hospitals.

Osler’s Vascular and Endovascular Therapeutics Program brings leading care closer to home Central West Ontario’s growing and diverse population has a high prevalence of risk factors that increase the likelihood of serious vascular diseases.

Osler is the first community hospital in Canada to have created a joint vascular and interventional radiology program strategically designed to provide minimally invasive procedures to treat vascular conditions, leading to shorter patient stays and ultimately – greater patient satisfaction. The vascular and interventional vascular radiology teams work together to provide high-risk patients with safer surgical methods. With a focus on amputation prevention, minimally invasive aneurysm repair and

Brampton is thinking bigger. Its demographics and location at the centre of Canada’s innovation super corridor is encouraging investment and technology sector partnerships. Brampton is building vibrant urban centres that ignite opportunity and instill pride.

A transformation in transit is enhancing intraand inter-city connections, with a focus on twoway, all-day electric GO service and mobility hubs where different modes of transportation come together seamlessly, integrating with pedestrian-friendly features.

A university and centre for education, innovation and collaboration is coming to the Downtown – with Council recently approving an unprecedented $150 million municipal investment for this project spurring jobs, creativity, investment and business partnerships.

Council STEM-focused learning, and partnerships with two of Canada’s leading postsecondary institutions, Ryerson University and

Sheridan College, will produce new waves of skilled workers for the industries of tomorrow.

More than $600 million has been invested in the recently opened Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness. With a focus on preventive care, it is the foundation for the development of a growing health cluster. Other new health facilities – like ErinoakKids – add more opportunities and dimensions to health care and cluster development in Brampton.

Across key sectors, in culture and vibrancy, Brampton is being transformed.

Brampton Invests in a Tech-Focused Future City commitment brings Brampton closer to a new Ryerson – Sheridan facility downtown.

B

rampton City Council made an historic commitment to an investment strategy for a once-in-a-generation opportunity for a university and a centre for education, innovation and collaboration in Downtown Brampton.

“Brampton City Council has demonstrated leadership and a commitment to the future of Brampton,” said Mayor Linda Jeffrey.

“Securing a university, and all the associated economic and social benefits, has been a priority for the City and I’m very pleased we’ve taken this bold step to support a positive outcome for our residents, our businesses, our youth, and our future.”

Council endorsed, in principle, investing up to $50M over 10 years into a post-secondary facility, and up to $100M into joint-use community space to support a university, business innovation and collaboration, community interaction and cultural growth.

This joint-use building could include a new central library, and entrepreneurial and cultural space in close proximity to a university facility in Downtown Brampton. The focus will be a creative space with unique attributes and advanced technology.

Expected soon are the results of a report on the economic and social benefits of a new university facility and a centre for education, innovation and collaboration.

The City is excited to continue its discussions with Ryerson University, Sheridan College, the Province and all stakeholders to develop a unique centre that combines education with innovation and collaboration – something beyond a traditional university campus.

Brampton Industry is Building a Hub for Jobs and Innovation Across all sectors, Brampton is investing in youth and talent to build tomorrow’s workforce

T

he City of Brampton is developing a youth workforce strategy that will bridge gaps between the skills needed by business and industry and the skills and experiences gained in universities, colleges and even secondary schools. The focus is on providing pathways for our youth.

Establishing a strategy is a collaborative efforts with the City’s community partners, education institutions and businesses to better connect student skills with employer needs and expectations while leveraging government incentive and training programs. The results of these efforts are already seeing results as academia and industry in Brampton work cohesively to better prepare today’s youth for tomorrow’s jobs.

The Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Design Technology (CAMDT) and new Skilled Trade Centre at Sheridan College’s Brampton campus is a “technology playground” that puts students, manufacturers and industry partners in the same space. The space is both a learning environment for students and a testing ground for business. And the centre is being well used. Some of the Brampton companies who are working in the space include MDA Canada, Brampton Engineering, Hatch, Almag Aluminum, WG – Pro Manufacturing Ltd., Confederation Freezers, Amcor and Magna – Plastcoat.

Just prior to officially opening in Brampton, Amazon Canada made a surprise delivery to the Brampton Robotics Club, dropping off $10,000 worth of equipment, technology and financial support. The donation has the long-term goal of encouraging students interested in STEM programs that will prepare them for the jobs Amazon and companies like it will offer down the road.

Connecting students with handson experience is an approach working across a number of sectors.

At local Brampton hospitals, undergraduate students from various disciplines get involved with life sciences research and quality improvement projects through the Osler Summer Student Research Program. Students who have completed a minimum of two years of university are hired in salaried positions, as volunteers, or as part of their studies, with their qualifications matched to projects lead by Osler physicians.

Coca-Cola’s Brampton facility offers undergraduates the opportunity to gain practical experience and exposure to the manufacturing process, field operations planning, procurement

Brampton’s youth workforce development strategy is formalizing the

approach used by these companies and organizations to encourage more interaction and stronger collaboration between industry and education across the entire business community. The end goal is increased innovation, stronger networks, and the development of the skilled workforce of tomorrow.

Central Peel NASA Competition Winners

High school students are enjoying new programs with an emphasis on high-tech, innovative programming, and acquiring the tools they will need to succeed in future careers, says Samantha Brace, head of Business and Technology and the Specialist High Skills Major program at Central Peel Secondary School.

“With these programs we’re helping produce highly skilled and motivated future employees with an aptitude for technology and strong problem solving skills,” says Ms. Brace. With the support of Amazon Canada, the school’s robotics team has seen national and international success, and a team of Grade 12 students recently earned a second-place finish in a NASA competition to design a self-sustainable orbital space settlement.

A Vision to Maximize Brampton’s Potential

F

rom its location at the centre of Canada’s innovation supercorridor, to its young, diverse, educated and rapidly growing population, Brampton is a city of enormous potential.

Now, the City is developing a vision to harness that potential and position Brampton as an example in Canada of a place where people want to live, work, play and raise their families. Working with internationally acclaimed urban visionary Larry Beasley, Brampton is thinking bigger about what it can, and will be, in 5, 10, 25 years and beyond.

Over the past six weeks, the City has embarked upon an intensive community-wide conversation with thousands of people to hear their ideas about what would make their dayto-day experience in Brampton more fulfilling.

Those conversations uncovered a number of different themes, including recreation, transportation, natural heritage, housing and parks. But perhaps the most resounding feedback

of all has been about employment.

The people of Brampton want more knowledge-based, skilled jobs.

They want a better balance between housing and employment.

Brampton’s vision will be developed over the next few months, based on these ideas from the community, but it seems safe to say that it will address jobs and innovation in some way.

Municipalities need to plan to accommodate all types of employment in order to maintain economic viability and achieve a healthy activity rate – namely, the proportion of jobs to population.

As this vision is developed, it will look at bringing together people, jobs, and all the inputs required for economic prosperity. By building complete communities, supporting foreign-licensed workers, and creating employment opportunities for everyone from youth to seniors, Brampton can be a magnet for jobs and innovation, and a sustainable future city.

rampton recognizes the important role culture plays in the economic prosperity and social vitality of any city, and is building on the strength of its cultural entrepreneurs.

Talented and entrepreneurial, 25year old Brampton poet Rupi Kaur has redefined the image of the modern poet by breaking into the mainstream and making poetry relevant again. Since its release in 2014, her first book, Milk and Honey, has sold 2.5 million copies world-wide, and spent 75 weeks on the New York Times Trade Paperback BestSeller Light.

Ms. Kaur has disrupted the publishing world along the way. Her literary career began on social media, first through Tumblr and then through Instagram, where she has accumulated 1.7 million followers. The popularity of her “Instapoems” led her to publish a collection of works. Again, she skipped traditional routes in favour of self-publishing through Amazon’s Createspace platform. This gave Ms. Kaur complete creative control over every aspect of the illustrated book.

Ms. Kaur has also refused to limit herself to poetry and publishing. In addition to being a writer, Ms. Kaur travels the world as a performer and speaker. She is a photographer and an art director. She has started her first novel and has said that she looks forward to delving into music, screenwriting, and film.

Nurturing a Creative Workforce in Brampton Sheridan’s Davis campus is home to some of Sheridan’s most exciting applied research projects, dynamic community partnership initiatives, and state of the art facilities in engineering, technology and the skilled trades.

T

hese programs and facilities are designed to not only educate highly qualified graduates, but respond to the unique needs of the community Sheridan calls home. Over the past five years, more than 12,000 students have graduated from our Davis Campus and directly entered the workforce – with a quarter of them – about 3,200 – finding work in the City of Brampton.

Purposeful creativity and applied, realworld problem solving are hallmarks of a Sheridan education. Our engineering and technology programs in Brampton are no different. Through our Centre for Advanced Manufacturing and Design Technologies (CAMDT), Sheridan has created an accessible community innovation hub for Brampton – where manufacturing is the top industrial

sector – that’s fueled by creative student thinking and rooted in close collaboration with industry. CAMDT was founded through a $2.5 million investment by the City of Brampton and has been supported by the Federal and

Provincial government and committed industry partners. The Centre brings together large companies who provide technology, software and expertise, with small and medium sized enterprises who are facing a business challenge, and students, who are supervised by faculty members, and who roll up their sleeves to tackle the problem. CAMDT’s research areas and specialized equipment include additive manufacturing (3D printing) and rapid prototyping; sustainable energy systems; plant layout/efficiency; robotics and automation systems.

Through this partnership approach, Sheridan becomes the R&D arm for small and medium sized enterprises who may not otherwise have access to the cutting-edge equipment that’s found in Sheridan’s workshops, studios and labs.

Collaboration is critically important in Brampton, where (in 2013) 94% of all businesses had less than 50 employees. To date, CAMDT has worked with more than 40 industry partners – including Hatch, Siemens and ABB Robotics, as well as numerous small companies

throughout Peel Region. Over 1,500 students learn by using CAMDT’s equipment every year.

In 2017, the creative community of learners at our Davis campus in Brampton grew to include Sheridan’s School of Skilled Trades and Apprenticeships, which relocated from Oakville. The school now occupies a purpose-built, 130,000 square foot facility in Brampton opened for classes.

The new building includes 52,000 square feet of workshops and lab space, a 3,500 square foot Learning Commons, and a sustainable design, including rainwater collection, photovoltaic system, and LED lighting. The building’s new District Energy Centre will centrally supply cooling and heating to the entire campus, and share additional energy with the surrounding Brampton community.

As they join our vibrant campus community, these skilled trades and apprenticeship students will also benefit by being co-located with our Engineering programs, giving their education a new dimension

Sheridan’s New Skilled Trades Centre through exposure to areas such as 3D printing, mechatronics and robotics.

They will also be more closely connected to Brampton’s dynamic manufacturing sector, creating countless new opportunities for collaboration and experiential learning with our community.

Sheridan’s commitment to nurturing innovation and creativity in Brampton reaches far beyond its campus

boundaries. In partnership with the City of Brampton and the Brampton Library, the college helped found MakerSpace Brampton in 2014. Founded by John Haggert, Adam Morton, and D.L. Scott in 1858, and run by the Mechanics’ Institute, Brampton Library began with just two shelves of books and periodicals, donated by local residents. By 1866, the growing collection contained several hundred standard classics, and even a few games.
