OTMH sparks interest in an Oakville life sciences hub Less than a year after it opened its doors, the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) is becoming the centerpiece of a potential hub for innovation and industry leadership in the life science sector.

A

proposal to build a unique Health Sciences and Technology District (HSTD) is continuing to take shape. The proposal presents a vision for a $1.5 billion health sciences campus directly adjacent to the OTMH. Developed in three stages, the concept would seek to attract and accommodate health science industries as well as research and technology firms in a compact urban hub.

According to current projections, the proposed development would foster the creation of as many as 9,000 new jobs, 75 per cent of which would serve as high-paying, primary jobs. Meanwhile, the HSTD would provide space and amenities for just over 2,000 new residents, making the concept a truly sustainable live-work community.

The development of Oakville’s HSTD would support the town’s award-winning economic development strategy, which strategically targets four knowledge-based industries as the foundation for growth and innovation.

These four industries include digital media, advanced manufacturing, professional services and – of course – the life sciences sector.

Oakville is situated in the centre of a life sciences corridor, with researchintensive employment hubs stretching from Hamilton to Toronto. New Incubator for Musical Theatre Links Sheridan to Broadway

F

or musical theatre students at Sheridan, each day is a chance to learn from the best in their industry.

Located in the heart of the college’s Oakville campus, the Canadian Music Theatre Project (CMTP) is the country’s first incubator for the development of new musical theatre works. Since its inception five years ago, the CMTP has produced 15 musicals, including the acclaimed Come From Away, which opens on Broadway on March 12, 2017.

Written by Toronto’s Irene Sankoff and David Hein, Come From Away is based on the true story of how the people of Gander, Newfoundland welcomed 6,579 travelers who arrived on their doorstep after 38 planes were forced to land on September 11, 2001.

The musical was the idea of, and originally produced by, Sheridan’s Associate Dean of Visual and Performing Arts Michael Rubinoff, who is also an entertainment lawyer and theatre producer. “This is an incredible story that I always believed would be even more compelling if developed as a musical infused with Newfoundland’s Celtic sound,” he says. Rubinoff is also producing a Come From Away benefit concert in Gander on October 29, 2016.

Currently running to sold out audiences at Ford’s Theatre in Washington D.C., the musical will play for local audiences in Mirvish’s newly renovated Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto from November 15, 2016 to January 8, 2017. Sankoff and Hein credit Sheridan with playing an integral role in getting their show to Broadway. “Come From Away’s success, and the opportunities

Once the CMTP accepts a script, Sheridan provides a director and music director for each project. Creative teams then hold auditions for students who will bring the characters to life, providing up to 170 hours of rehearsal time to

refine the material. “The Canadian Music Theatre Project gives students a unique, unparalled learning opportunity,” Rubinoff says. “It has become the destination of choice for Canadian and international composers and writers.”

From October 13 to 15, the CMTP’s workshops will give theatre-goers a sneak peek at new works through 45-minute public readings at the annual Festival of New Musicals in Macdonald Heaslip Hall at Sheridan’s Oakville campus.

Graduates of its renowned Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance program perform on Broadway, at the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, and are part of blockbuster tours. Come From Away is just the latest CMTP production to go from school to stage. This month, Prom Queen:The Musical will premiere at the Segal Centre in Montreal, and Marathon of Hope:The Musical will play at the St. Jacob’s Country Playhouse. They join a growing list of musicals receiving critical acclaim in the theatre world, which includes The Theory of Relativity. Created by New York-based Canadians, Neil Bartram and Brian Hill, the musical is now available to license through Music Theatre International, one of the world’s leading theatrical licensing agencies. A cast recording on CD and iTunes has also been released.

Closer to home, the CMTP has also brought local history to life. Brantwood, the largest production of immersive, site-specific musical theatre in Canadian history, was staged in 2015 in a real-life

Created by Toronto-based artists Julie Tepperman and Mitchell Cushman, the production featured 11 era-specific storylines. Spectators decided which stories to follow as they wandered through classrooms and halls in a production featuring 90 characters, 200 scenes, 40 musical numbers and dance sequences – with 15 scenes occurring simultaneously at any given time – all interwoven by a crew of 40 students from Sheridan’s Technical Production for Theatre and Live Events program. The show took home the Audience Choice Award for Outstanding Production at the 2015 Dora Mavor Moore Awards that honour excellence in Toronto’s performing arts community. It also won an Award of Excellence from Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council for its role in communicating the impact and benefit of research to Canadians.

History will also play a leading role in the CMTP’s newest production. It

tells the story of Norman Bethune, the Canadian physician whose voluntary medical service in China during the 1930s left a lasting impression on the country. In September, Rubinoff was part of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s first official visit to China where an agreement between the CMTP and the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre was signed. The project will team The Theory of Relativity’s Bartram and Hill with Nick Rongjun Yu, one of China’s most prolific playwrights and Deputy General Manager of the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre, with Rubinoff serving as the producer. Over the next few years, the writers will work together to develop both English and Mandarin versions of the musical with workshops taking place in Shanghai and at Sheridan before it premieres in 2019.

New Executive MBA at DeGroote School of Business

S

ome of the brightest and most accomplished grad students in the country are flocking to the Masters in Business Administration (MBA) program at the DeGroote School of Business, including students and community partners from across the Halton Region and Oakville, and for good reason.

The DeGroote School of Business has once again been named to Canadian Business magazine’s prestigious Canada’s Best MBAs list, landing in ninth spot on the national reputation ranking after assessing the school’s name recognition and perception of quality, among other factors – from the more than 40 Canadian universities currently offer MBA programs.

DeGroote’s co-op MBA, which received high praise in the Canadian Business survey, offers students three four-month work terms during a 28-month program.These

co-op placements “enable participants to gain on-the-job insights and expertise while studying,” the survey stated.

DeGroote is the only Canadian business school that offers three work terms.

Last year’s graduating class of 108 coop MBA students commanded an average starting salary of $68,982, while fulltime and accelerated graduates earned an average starting salary of $62,500.

The survey also highlighted a number of specializations available to MBA students – including Health Services Management; Management of Innovation and New Technology; Strategic Business Valuation; and Strategic Management – and cited the BizX Exchange Program as a valuable international learning opportunity.

The first cohort for the DeGroote School of Business new Executive MBA in Digital Transformation is comprised of

senior business leaders from as far away as India and Finland. Anchored by four residential modules held in the Halton Region and California, the 13-month program teaches students how to manage and use digital systems to make datadriven decisions, lead complex and diverse

ErinoakKids to open new treatment centre for kids with disabilities in Oakville

I

n mid-2017, ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development, Ontario’s largest children’s treatment centre for children and youth with disabilities and special needs, will be opening three new facilities, including a site in Oakville. A first in more than 40 years for ErinoakKids, the new sites will replace its existing 11 outgrown and outdated locations. The new buildings in Brampton, Mississauga and Oakville, will more than double its treatment space to meet the growing need for services for kids with disabilities in Peel, Halton and Dufferin County.

At approximately 79,000 sq. ft., the Oakville/Halton site is located across from the new Oakville Hospital and will serve about 5,600 (35% of all clients) children and youth each

year from the Region, including Burlington, Georgetown, Milton and Oakville. It will offer a variety of services, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, autism services, speech and language services, infant hearing and screening services, vision services, recreation therapy, social work services, auditory verbal therapy and more!

At a total cost of $55.2 million, the Ontario government has committed $50 million in funding toward the Oakville location. ErinoakKids’ In my dreams fundraising campaign is seeking to raise the remaining $3 million by May 2017 for critical programming and therapy equipment.

Families from Oakville/Halton and throughout ErinoakKids’ service area will be able to obtain respite care at its new 26bed Regional Respite Centre, located at its new Brampton site.The Respite Centre will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide short periods of care for children and youth with complex care needs from Halton, Peel and surrounding areas.

Neuromuscular, spina bifida, orthopedic, orthotic and other specialty medical and therapy clinics will be provided. For clients with hearing loss, ErinoakKids will provide audiology testing and assessment services, including a hearing aid dispensary. Specialty clinics will serve approximately 600 children and youth each year.

The site will be home to a significantly enhanced Autism Program that will include 16,372 sq. ft. of classrooms, teaching areas and activity space. ErinoakKids will be equipped to serve 1,300 children with autism and their families each year.

Services such as speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physio­ therapy and recreation therapy will serve approximately 2,400 children and youth each year.

ome call him a “messenger of hope”. Others say he has given them courage to change their lives.

But to Manny Scott, one of the original Freedom Writers, portrayed in the 2007 MTV movie, he’s helping others to turn the page, just as someone did for him when he was a teenager.

When Manny was 16, he was headed down a path that would have destroyed him. His father was incarcerated, he had dropped out of school and his best friend had been murdered. He had lost all hope.

Then a man – a complete stranger – inspired him to write a different story.

Manny returned to school with new purpose and ended up in Erin Gruwell’s English class, and part of a group now known worldwide as the Freedom Writers. He began writing new chapters of possibility and in the process found hope for a better tomorrow.

n 1905, William H. Cooper decided to diversify from his Hamilton brick-making and masonry contracting businesses and ventured into general contracting. W. H. Cooper Construction Ltd was born with limited capital but unlimited ambition, a strong work ethic, and uncompromising quality standards.

His son, Ralph Cooper took the helm in 1937. In the early years of his stewardship, the company’s focus was largely on building for secondary manufacturers and lighter industry. In 1978, the third generation took the helm of the company, as Bill Cooper assumed the presidency.

As the new millennium began, Cooper Construction was positioned to meet new challenges in three primary business sectors: Design/ Build construction, commercial and industrial real estate development, and facilities management. In 2004, the company completed the first industrial building in Canada to earn LEED® certification. In 2005, Cooper celebrated its centennial year.
