Welcome to our Gateway magazine... We start this issue of Gateway with a bit of good news. The Nationwide said the recovery in the housing market has been “unexpectedly rapid”. The increase in August was the highest since February 2004, when house prices rose by 2.7%. As a result, annual house price growth accelerated to 3.7%, from 1.5% in July. CHOOSING THE RIGHT COLOUR SCHEME FOR YOUR HOME
Follow our suggestions to help you get picking the right colours for your home.
So you’ve bought your dream home, and now is the time to make it “yours” and get decorating. Creating a whole house colour palette, before painting a single wall, is the best way to keep your moving experience as happy and as relaxed as possible. Homes are often designed over years so it’s easy to add furniture and colours that don’t necessarily work. This isn’t to say colour palettes should be overly prescriptive - I think the days of matching everything in the home are behind us, thankfully. Just that having some kind of colour palette in mind to look at will help you pull your home together nicely. THE SEARCH First, you’ll need some inspiration. Social media is a great place to get some inspired - Instagram and Pinterest are the best of the bunch for this kind of thing. Also search the web and even grab a couple of magazines on the subject from your local shop or supermarket. FIND A PATTERN The easiest way to settle on a colour scheme is to find a pattern containing multiple hues that you love. It can come from anywhere that upholstered floral chair, that wallpaper you’ve had your eye on, that rug you’ve been dreaming about. If you find a pattern you love then go with it.
OUTSIDE INSPIRATION Sometimes it’s a great idea to take inspiration from outside. If you’re lucky enough to have a great view outside your window, then why not bring outside inside? NEUTRAL SHADES Once you’ve got the basic colour palette you love, it’s time to make a few tweaks. Always include a few neutral shades in your palette to make the whole thing pull together better and make it easier on the eyes if you’ve picked a bright palette. “POP” COLOUR If you’re using a more reserved colour palette then do not be afraid to use a ‘pop” colour. If your “pop” colour is only going to appear two or three times, make sure the “pop” colour shade is the same across the board as you want it to feel purposeful. Now, of course, we are all different so do what makes you happy. This is YOUR home.

Time to sort out your finances
Falling into debt can be a traumatic experience that impacts all areas of your life. Follow our advice to help you get back in control.
Let’s start by saying that most people have some form of debt, whether that’s a mortgage, a credit card or even an overdraft. When treated with care, debt can be useful and is an essential part of life for many - very few people would be able to afford to buy their own home without a mortgage. However, if debt is not taken seriously, then it can potentially destroy your hopes and dreams. GET YOURSELF IN ORDER It can be tough to own up to your financial difficulties, but it’s the first important step. Write a list of all your credit cards, store cards, overdrafts, loans and mortgage debt, and then add up how much is going out each month. This will give you a great indication of where you need to cut corners to save money and get back in control. TIME TO BUDGET It’s time to get a household budget in order, and remember, every little helps. Do you have a gym membership you don’t use? Do you really need to buy that overpriced coffee every time you go to lunch? You might not realise but if you’re spending £2.20 on a coffee five times a week then you’re spending £570 a year on it. These sort of unnecessary expenses need to be stopped if you’re finding yourself struggling month on month.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF One in four people in the UK will experience mental health problems each year, and worrying about debt or money can exacerbate the problem even further. Taking even small steps in the right direction will help with your mental health and improve your situation. If you’re struggling with your mental health then reach out to mental health charities such as Mind and StepChange who will provide you with useful advice and contacts. SAY NO TO PAYDAY LOANS A payday loan is, as the name suggests, a small loan designed to tide you over until your next payday. It is tempting to take out a payday loan if your in dire need of cash, but with a typical APR of 1,300%, it can be an expensive option. BANKRUPTCY Bankruptcy should always be your last resort. If you absolutely can’t pay off your debts then bankruptcy might be for you. It costs £680 to apply but means any money you owe will be written off. It also means that anything you own may have to be sold to pay off debts - this can include your home, your car and any luxury items. If you’re considering this option then make sure you get free, independent debt advice before apply as it will have long-term effects on you financially.

TAKING CARE OF YOUR HOUSEPLANTS 8 tips to take care of your new family member(s).
Since lockdown, houseplant sales have skyrocketed due to people working from home and spending more and more time indoors. Whether you’re sitting at your home desk, or simply putting yet another houseplant in the living room (like me), the presence of greenery in our homes makes us all feel that little bit better. We have put together a few tips for you to take care of your new family member(s). 1. Surprisingly often overlooked, but one of the most important factors in a healthy plant, is to make sure you spin your plants around so they grow evenly and not lopsided. Do this every week. 2. There is no need to fertilize your plants in the winter. Only do so in the spring and summer. 3. If you’re a gardening newbie, use pots with holes in to make your life easier. But remember to have your pot in a saucer - nobody likes water on their desk. 4. We all like that summer glow, so when the sun is shining, take your houseplants outside if you can. It will keep them looking and staying healthy.
5. Buy yourself a moisture meter. This is a great tip if you’re prone to giving your houseplants too much water and accidentally killing them. We’ve all been there at some point. 6. Don’t forget to dust those leaves. Sure you can use a damp cloth and wipe each leaf individually, but if you’re like me and own too many plants, then that will take you all day. Take your plants into the shower and let the overhead water wet the leaves down for you. Leave them to dry off in the shower before moving them back to their original spot. This tip also means you’ve watered your plants too, of course. 7. Use a systemic insecticide. This product is sprinkled on the surface of the soil to keep bugs away. From my experience it works very well and isn’t too pricey. 8. Don’t be afraid to cut off the browned bits from your leaves to tidy it up a little. Follow the natural leaf shape, if the leaf shape comes to a point, don’t cut it back straight across, it won’t look natural.
