Thierry TALKS FOOTBALL

Thierry Henry has joined the BBC punditry team for this summer’s Euro Championships in his home country4

World Cup and European Championship winner Thierry Henry has joined the BBC punditry team for this summer’s UEFA Euro 2016 in his home country.

“We believe we have assembled a very impressive team of international stars and Thierry will really shine alongside Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer.”

The former Arsenal striker was part of the BBC’s World Cup coverage for Brazil 2014 and joined Sky as a pundit in 2015. It was announced last December that the French national would be joining the BBC team this June, led

by Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer. A number of other big international names will also be joining the panel for discussions including Rio Ferdinand.

Now a retired French national footballer, Thierry has played for Monaco, Barcelona, New York Red Bulls and spent eight years at Arsenal, where he is the club’s all-time record goal scorer. At international level he represented France and is also his country’s record goal scorer.

BBC Sport will broadcast 26 games during the Euro Championships 2016, including the standout match of the group stage as England face Wales on 16th June. ITV will show the opening match of the tournament between hosts France and Romania on 10th June as well as England’s first and final group games against Russia and Slovakia. ITV will have first pick of the games in the last 16 as well as the semi-finals, while the BBC has the first two picks of the quarterfinals. The final in Paris on 10th July will be live on both channels.

Thierry naturally seems very excited about his involvement.

“I really enjoyed the World Cup in Brazil and it was a completely different experience as a pundit rather than a player. I am enjoying my broadcasting work and look forward to being part of the BBC’s team, covering some of the great matches featuring Europe’s best players.”

“It is a tournament that is very close to my heart, having won it 15 years ago, and the fact it is being held in France will make it an extra special experience.”

Philip Bernie, Head of TV Sport for the BBC, also added: “We are delighted to have Thierry as part of the BBC team in Paris.

He will bring a real insight into what is required to win this tournament and also what it’s like to be victorious at a major event on home soil.”

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy and a popular holiday location. Located in northern Italy, about halfway between Brescia and Verona, and between Venice and Milan, in June temperatures are steadily warm making it the perfect holiday destination this month.

Surrounded by beautiful lakeside towns, which have charmed foreign visitors for centuries, Lake Garda will definitely steal your heart. Even for the ancient Romans, the area was a luxury summer destination and in Sirmione and Desenzano you can visit ruins and mosaics that record their presence.

The large lake stretches from north to south around 50 miles so there’s plenty to see and do. The southern lakeshore is fairly built-up whereas towering mountains and cliffs surround the dramatic fjord-like northern end. Most of the lakeside towns are popular holiday resorts and although they all differ in character, they are equally as astounding and well connected by boat services.

Sirmione is a pretty town on the southern shore of Lake Garda. The most striking feature here has to be the moated castle, Rocca Scaligera. Narrow medieval streets bustle with colour and life and the tiny town is a very popular holiday destination, with the summer months bringing crowds in.

Desenzano is not as pretty as the lake’s smaller towns, but there is a lot in its favour. Around the harbour, the streets are attractive, and if you wander up from the castle, there’s a lovely view over the lake. In the summer it even hosts a number of outdoor concerts. Desenzano is a traditional Italian town rather than a tourist town but there are plenty of good restaurants and busy bars. A place perfect for those who want to see more of the area and those who enjoy a realistic taste of Italian culture.

Riva is at the northern end of Lake Garda, and is a pleasant tourist destination with pretty public gardens. The lakeside area is packed with cafes, restaurants, markets and stalls and the waterfront is dominated by one of Garda’s fortresses, the Rocca, which contains the town’s museum. Here, walking or driving excursions give access to some of the region’s most dramatic scenery including a 287-ft waterfall at Varone. You’ll definitely need your camera in Lake Garda.

Malcesine is pretty, atmospheric, and packed with tourists.

The town, on the eastern shore of Lake Garda, is charming and consists of a maze of historic alleys. A castle guards the waters, while mountain slopes rear up behind the clustered buildings. A cable car takes you right up to the high grassy summit of the Monte Baldo ridge, where the views are stupendous.
