PRESIDENT’S WELCOME Dear all, A warm welcome to all returners, freshers and our new members! I hope you had a restful summer vacation.

I’m delighted to present to you our CULS Michaelmas Termcard 2024!

As we head into the 123rd year of CULS, we continue to have exciting plans in store. This year, we are staying true to our values of improving accessibility, widening the social impact of our initiatives, and equipping you with the skills to excel in the legal profession. We want CULS to remain a place for everyone, law student or not.

Brand new this year are our Diversity and Inclusion affinity groups, a widened scope of our alumni mentoring scheme, as well as an increase in pro bono internship opportunities. Our Michaelmas calendar is packed with skill-focused careers workshops for aspiring solicitors and barristers, social events with different firms, and moots organised in collaboration with leading chambers in the UK. We also have various opportunities for you to get involved – from Per Incuriam submissions, to pro bono subcommittee applications!

We’re also excited to be introducing digital membership cards, which our memberships department has worked on! We have also been continuing our partnerships with various local brands in Cambridge to provide the best discounts to CULS members. Our stash department will also be rolling out new stash, which hopefully becomes one of your wardrobe essentials in your time at Cambridge.

It’s important to us that CULS remains an accessible and inclusive space for all, where people come together and forge lifelong friendships. Therefore, for our non-law members, our non-law department will be organising various socials and panels where you can meet other CULS members, and legal professionals with a non-law background. We will also be implementing access prices for our annual law ball, such that everyone gets an equal opportunity to attend. We will continue to post updates on our Facebook, Instagram and Mailing List for all our events, so please watch out for them for sign-up links and further details!

Most importantly, I want to extend my sincerest gratitude to the CULS Main Committee, who have worked so hard to make this term card possible, by coming up with new ideas and bringing them to fruition. I would also like to thank our sponsors for their generous support of our society, and their enthusiasm in supporting CULS members in their career goals.

Jeffrey Sullivan KC

Jeff Sullivan KC is a partner in the London office of Debevoise & Plimpton, where he is Co-Chair of International Arbitration, alongside Lord Goldsmith KC. Mr. Sullivan’s practice focusses on international dispute resolution and public international law.

Mr. Sullivan is one of the market’s leading and most respected advocates, representing clients before all major international courts and arbitral institutions. He has acted as counsel and lead advocate in more than 30 bilateral investment treaty and Energy Charter Treaty arbitrations. He has represented major international investors such as Uniper SE, AES Corp, and KKR as well as sovereign states, including Poland, the Philippines, Pakistan and Azerbaijan. He has also advised nation states in Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East on the negotiation and drafting of trade and investment treaties.

Mr. Sullivan is a Member of the ICC UK Arbitration & ADR Nominations Committee, a member of the Energy Charter Treaty Secretariat’s Legal Advisory Task Force, an Executive Board Member of the European Federation for Investment Law and Arbitration and an Executive Committee Member of the Foundation for International Arbitration Advocacy.

Graeme Maguire

Graeme Maguire is a leading international regulatory and commercial technology and communications partner based in the London Bird & Bird London office. Since April 2020, he has also been Chair of the Bird & Bird Board.

He advises on complex international projects and transactions involving communications and technology, bringing considerable domestic and international transactional and regulatory expertise and industry knowledge to the table. He has extensive experience in working with colleagues on corporate, M&A, financing and disputes matters involving technology and communications. He has worked with some of the world's leading technology and communications companies and new market entrants including on many innovative and market-transforming transactions, projects and issues.

He has written and spoken widely on communications and technology. He wrote the Communications and Broadcasting Regulation chapter of Graham Smith's 'Internet Law & Regulation' (2007 edition) and co-wrote the chapter on 'Capacity Agreements - From Microwaves to MVNOs' of Ian Walden's 'Telecommunications Law and Regulation' (2018 edition).

STUDENT MENTORSHIP SCHEME The CULS Student Mentorship Scheme presents an invaluable opportunity to connect with students and alumni who were once in the same position as you. Our Alumni Department aims to partner up mentors with mentees by holistically considering similar interests, backgrounds, and aspirations in order to optimize the room for growth and learning between mentors and mentees.

We highly encourage you to be a mentor and a mentee- the benefits that you reap and connections that you build through this scheme will aid you through your degree and beyond. All students- be it from 1st, 2nd, 3rd year and beyond, are encouraged to sign up as a mentee, and students in 2nd year and beyond are encouraged to sign up as a mentor. Whether you are interested in career advice in commercial law, The Bar, business, further academia, or tips on the Tripos, our Student Mentorship Scheme has something for you.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE PROGRAMME It is our pleasure to host the third Foreign Affairs exchange program since the pandemic. After incredible success with the Maastricht (2023-24) and Malta (2022-23) Law Students' Society, we are proud to continue the tradition to new cities across the world.

All participants can look forward to sponsored flights and accommodation, alongside exciting events at our host destination that range from tours of Christmas markets to landmark tourist sites. In return, participants will help to host our exchange friends in Lent Term during their time in Cambridge.

MOOTS INTRODUCTION TO MOOTING WORKSHOP

This session will include an explanation of what mooting is, how to research for it, how to prepare skeleton arguments, bundles and oral advocacy tips. There will also be a short demonstration of a submission showing the style of speaking and how to respond to judges’ comments. This will be held after a first-year lecture in the first week of Michaelmas, so just stay behind to attend!

FLEDGLINGS MOOT

This is an individual moot for first-time mooters starting in Michaelmas.

Participants will not have had any prior mooting experience and moot problems will be on first-year areas of law only.

This is a great experience for beginners to get into mooting!

DE SMITH MOOT

The De Smith Moot, sponsored by One Essex Court, is an individual moot starting in Michaelmas. Participants will have had some prior mooting experience, and moot problems can be on any core area of law. If you are looking to participate in a more advanced moot, this is the moot for you!

This is a team moot (in pairs) starting in Michaelmas. There is no need for participants to have prior mooting experience, and no restrictions on how the team is formed.
