PerformingArtsCentreIcelandplaysaroleinsupportingIcelandic performingartsandincreasingtheirvisibilityandreputationinIceland andabroad.
TheCentreintendstoachieveitspurposethroughstrongpromotional andspecificinitiativesthatencourageinternationalrelationsamong performingartistsandinstitutionsinIceland.

TheNationalTheatreofIceland(Þjóðleikhúsið)isavibrantanddynamic theatre,thathasbeenaleadinginstitutionontheIcelandictheatre sceneeversinceitopenedformallyin1950,receivingaround100.000 spectatorseachseason.Thetheatre’smissionistomakeoutstanding, entertaining,andchallengingtheatreforadiverseaudience,share importantandcompellingstories,arousethegeneralpublic’sinterestin thetheatreandpromotethedevelopmentoftheartsofthestage.The NTIworkswithprominenttheatreartistsfromIcelandandabroadand nurturesnewtalent.
TheNTIperformseachseasonaroundtennewproductions,aswellas re-premieres,co-productions,andguestperformances,comprisinga variedrepertoireofnewIcelandicworks,newforeignworks,Icelandic andforeignclassics,musicals,dancepiecesandchildren’sproductions. Thetheatreservesanimportantroleinthedevelopmentofnew Icelandicplaysandaimstodevelopyoungsters’appreciationofthe theatrethroughproductionsespeciallyintendedforchildrenandyouth, andvisitstothetheatre.TheNTItoursitsproductionsaroundIceland andabroad.TheNTIaimstobeinclusive,diverse,andsustainable.
ThetheatreissituatedinthehistoricalcenterofReykjavíkandperforms infourseparatevenues:theMainStage(500seats),theBlackBox(130 seats),theSmallStage(80seats),andTheTheatreCellarClub(100120seats).
TheNTIcollaboratesinternationally,notablywithrenownedtheatres, directors,anddesigners.Recentandcurrentcollaborationsinclude SimonMcBurneyandtheComplicitétheatre,StefanŻeromskiinKielce inPoland,YaëlFarber,BenedictAndrews,MariusvonMayenburgand NinaWetzel.
TheReykjavikCityTheatre(RCT)ranksamongIceland´soldestand mostprestigiousculturalinstitutionsinIcelandandasthename suggests,isthemunicipaltheatreofIceland´scapitalcity.
TheReykjavikCityTheatreisalargecomplexandhasthreemajor stages.
TheLargeStageSeatingfor546guestsandincorporatesauxiliaryback andwingstages,aflytowerwithhydraulicflyingfacilities,arevolving stageandanorchestrapitforfiftymusicians.
TheNewStageSeatingupto250,isablackboxofferingnever-ending possibilities.
TheSmallStageWithanaudiencecapacityofupto200,isatheatre-inthe-roundwithaversatilestageandbalconies.
TheRCTalsorunsaneducationaldepartmentwiththeaimofopening upthetheatretoyoungandold.

TjarnarbíóTheatreishometotheindependentperformingartsin Iceland.Afullyequipped,mediumsizedblackbox,TjarnarbíóTheatreis ahostingvenue,focusedonprovidingthelocalperformingartsscene withqualityaccommodationsforcreating,rehearsing,andperforming artonstagetoanaudienceofupto180people.Wehosttheatregroups, dancegroups,operagroups,allsortsofconcerts,improvgroups,dance theatregroups,circusgroups,festivalssuchastheReykjavíkFringe Festival,ReykjavíkDanceFestivalandReykjavíkArtFestival,aswellasa varietyofstandup.
ProductionisinthehandsofeachgroupworkingwithinTjarnarbíó,with assistancefromthetheatreanditsstaffasneeded.Forthis,Tjarnarbíó Theatreemploysasmall,yettalentedgroupofprofessionalswithyears ofexperienceintheperformingarts.Theirexpertiserangesfrom technicalaspectssuchaslightsandsound,tostagework,tomarketing, ticketsalesandfinance.Withacombinedeffort,TjarnarbíóTheatre embracestheartistsandgroupsworkingwithinitswalls.Withamixture ofloveandprofessionalism,TjarnarbíóTheatreaidesthemalongin makingthemostofeveryworktheycreateandeveryshowtheyperform.
AkureyriCultureCompany(ACC)representsthreeculturalinstitutions; AkureyriTheatreCompany(LeikfélagAkureyrar),theNorthIceland SymphonicOrchestra(SinfóníuhljómsveitNorðurlands)andtheHof CulturalCenter(MenningarhúsiðHof).Theaimistocreateastrong sceneforthethreelargestculturalinstitutionsinNorthIcelandto cooperate,tofurtheradvanceAkureyri´sculturalsocietyandfurther strengtheningtheoperationscarriedoutbytheseparties.Alltheir workbuildsuptopromotingandstrengtheningtheoperation,establish artisticindependence,smallersuperstructureandamoreeconomical operation.
TheAkureyriTheaterCompanyistheonlyprofessionaltheaterinthe countryoutsideoftheReykjavíkarea.It´soperationissupportedbythe MunicipalityofAkureyribasedonanagreementwiththeMinistryof CultureandEducation.Thehistoryofthetheatercompanyitselfgoes backforoveracenturybutthecompanybecameaprofessionaltheater in1973.TheAkureyriTheaterCompanyisprimarilybasedat Samkomuhúsið,anexquisitebuildingclosetotheheartofAkureyriand seats210people.Samkomuhúsiðisatraditionaltheaterastage,risings andbalcony.ThetheaterdepartmentofATCputsonproductionsonthe stagesinHof-HamraborgandHamraraswell.Overtheyears,theater companyprojectshaveincludedclassicalIcelandicandforeignplays, newIcelandicandforeignplays,andchildren´splaysandmusicals.The theaterdepartmentofATCproducesaboutthreeproductionsofitsown eachyearandincollaborationwithothers,inadditiontomanyshorter productionsandsmallerevents.ManynewIcelandicproductionshave premièredattheAkureyritheaterandtheartistsofATCoftenwork withvisionarywritersandplaywrightswhofocusonoriginalcreative works.GuestsoftheATCcomefromalloverthecountry. ReykjavíkArtsFestivalistheleadingmulti-artsfestivalinIceland.The festivalisbiennialandfocusesonnewcommissionsandthecreative intersectionofthearts.Itpresents,tothewidestpossibleaudience, exhibitionsandperformancesofcontemporaryandclassicalworksin majorculturalvenuesandunconventionalspacesthroughoutthecity.

Sinceitsinceptionin1970,ReykjavíkArtsFestivalhasinvitedthousands ofartistsfromallpartsoftheglobetoperformorexhibitatthefestival.
