Of all our hideaways in the West Coast National Park, this is the closest to the beach and has the most intimate relationship with the lagoon.

Hout Huisie is enviably positioned all on its own near the tip of a little peninsula in Schrywershoek and backed by a marshy wetland. With no shops or restaurants to distract you, this is a place to unwind and let your days be governed by the moods of Langebaan Lagoon and the gentle rhythms of life in this West Coast hamlet.

Centrepiece of the community is a small Anglican church and a picturesque graveyard where one gravestone inscription reads, ‘Sakkie Pieterse, a man who would give his last fish.’ There are three clusters of whitewashed, chalkstone cottages strung along a bluff overlooking lagoon beaches where boats are drawn up on the sand. The older buildings, many dating from the 19th century, have end chimneys, reed ceilings, window frames and rafters fashioned from the timbers of wrecked ships and interiors full Artemon Cottage, Groot Reserve of flotsam, antiques and Paternoster lagoon memorabilia.

Ambience This timber bungalow is a distinctive landmark sitting alone on a sandy point just south of the hamlet of Churchhaven. The interiors are rustic chic, with two bedrooms and a lovely deck that’s only a few paces from the beach. The sweep of white sand at your doorstep is effectively a private beach, never frequented by more than a handful of others from the distant cottages.

A World Heritage Site, Limietberg offers a number of beautiful hikes through that wind through fynbos, indigenous forest, rugged and steep kloofs, and valleys through which the Breede and Berg rivers flow.

With magnificent views over the Cape Winelands and Table Mountain (60km to the West) La Estancia Olive Farm is tucked into the landscape with a view that you own and provides unique access to nature. While there are extensive groves of some of the oldest olive trees in the country, buchu and some citrus and guavas, much of the farm is left to indigenous fynbos.

Evocative old Africa Otto House is set in evocative old Africa surroundings, but the house itself is also as gently African as can be. Just earth and elements of raw wood, sand and metal were used to create this unusual, comfortable bush home for a couple or singleton inspired by living lightly. When an interior decorator and an architect specialising in rammed earth buildings team up, the result will certainly be evocative – and so it is.

Otto House is actually two dwellings linked by a walkway. The main house has a bedroom and bathroom – and al fesco shower – along with a lounge and kitchen. The one-bedroom en-suite guest bedroom is quite separate from the main house, affording full privacy for everyone in residence. Throughout are clean lines and simple, enchanting furnishings all free standing. Floors are cool white screed concrete, there’s a copper washbowl and an elegant wooden four-poster bed – all embueing simplicity and ease of living. So there’s plenty of time to light a fire in the garden firepit, kick back on a comfy deck couch and watch the sun set – as Africa winds down for the day and hippos gently submerge in the river, reminding you its all theirs.

Completed in 2013, Otto House is completely off the grid (but with a backup grid power option) and runs on solar power and borehole water. It was created using 27 layers of local sand, compacted to create thick rammed earth walls. All through the day the house gently changes colour from soft pink to warm muted yellow as light plays with the sand walls – they’re thoroughly alive and ever changing.
