Five years in the making This edition marks five years since the first edition of Peregian Springs News made its way to local letterboxes as an eight page newsletter with a mission of keeping local residents informed about their neighbourhood.

In the time since, the dog park, skate park, and aquatic centre have opened, Ridges has grown and Balgownie Drive extended. The site adjacent to Arcare we reported on then and which was cleared in 2016, remains

vacant. It’s now up for sale and progress on the site opposite at Koel Circuit has stalled as its owner reconsiders the options.

On the residential front, the remaining blocks are fewer by the day. The most recent update from Michele Jackson at the Land Sales Office reveals only 7 lots remain at The Address (by the water tower) and only 6 at The Vistas, beside it.

As we celebrate this birthday we look forward to sharing many more with you.

From the Ed’s desk: Five years ago I saw the chance to talk about our new Peregian Springs community and the emerging Peregian Breeze Village.

Other papers came in but didn’t talk about what’s happening in our unique area - our people, our businesses, our governance and our homes and places of recreation.

Our communities are “Master planned” with part of Peregian Springs (Ridges) a Multi Layered Body Corporate scheme which is largely still governed by the Developer, and the other part planned around the Golf Course and parklands.

But “Plans” don’t make the community - it’s the people that do.

Over the 5 years I’ve been privileged to watch this community grow to be home to people from all places, all

backgrounds, all ages and what I’ve seen is despite outward differences we have more in common than apparent.

Everyone has a love of the sunny lifestyle, fresh air, and a desire to work and play in a way that means we can all enjoy the things we look forward too now and into the future.

Thank you for helping us be part of your life for the last 5 years.

Bushfire preparations under control Fire and fire safety measures are top of the agenda this month as we hit the first anniversary of the Peregian Bush Fires of September 2019.

The fires, raged for two days after starting in Bushland behind Koel Circuit in Peregian Springs on the afternoon of September 9, then fuelled by a strong south easterly wind pattern and high ground vegetation load, they moved towards Peregian Beach.

The fires caused residents to be evacuated to Noosa and Coolum, destroyed one home in Peregian Beach, badly damaged another, and burnt acres of bushland.

Firefighters came from all over Queensland to help fight the fires and helicopter water bombers ran nonstop whenever the weather allowed.

In the time since, considerable work has been done via Noosa Council and State Government to ensure fire trails in the National Park have been cleared in preparation for this year’s fire season.

While there have been some concerns raised in Peregian Springs as to whether any bushfire mitigation work is required, a rural fire report on one patch of bush owned by Aveo, behind the “ropes park” at Brindabella Circuit, found it’s positioning and the current fuel load were not a concern.

An Aveo spokesperson said: “Given the ongoing nature of bushfire management, FKP/Aveo are constantly working with the relevant stakeholders and experts to implement recommendations to further improve

Local News fire safety whilst balancing other concerns such as vegetation protection within the lands owned

by Aveo. We also continue to work collaboratively with the local authorities and the National Park [Department of Environmental Science] who undertake mitigation works in the area.

“As landowners we will continue to take on advice, assist the relevant authorities, and implement recommended strategies in order to reduce the impact of bushfire wherever possible.”

Peregian fires commemorative events As the local community remembers the challenges of 2019’s bushfires there are a number of local events planned to give thanks to the emergency services personnel who helped, to find out about volunteering and to talk about fire planning for the future. School calls for public submissions The Public have until September 14 to have their say on whether a café, in the grounds of a local school, should be able to sell food and drink, including alcohol, to the public.

Signs have gone up on the boundaries of St Andrew’s Anglican College announcing a material change of use development application.

Documents on Council’s Development I website indicate The Church body who owns St Andrew’s Anglican College it’s Aquatic Centre and the onsite Lanes Café, applied for a Liquor Licence in late 2019 and discovered the original town planning approvals did not authorize the operation of a “Food and Drink Outlet” on the site.

St Andrew’s has now applied to Council to approve a Material Change of Use (MCU) to enable The Lanes to be classified as a “Food and Drink Outlet” within the Planning Scheme which authorises the sale of food and drink to the public and paves the way for a separate Liquor Licence Application to be made for the service of alcohol to the public at the cafe.

Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014 defines “Food and Drink Outlet” Premises used for preparation and sale of food and drink to the public for consumption on or off the site. The use may include the ancillary sale of liquor for consumption on site” In an Information Request letter to the College, Council said the “proposed development presents conflicts with the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014” and did not appear to be consistent with the intent 8

for development in the Aquatic Centre’s “Community Facilities” zoning adding “It is unclear how an independently operated Food and drink outlet is required for the Educational establishment to function effectively, or how a food and drink outlet that is open to the public and serves alcohol could be compatible with the existing use of the site.”

A letter in response to the Councils Information Request was prepared by College Town Planners, Project Urban, dated 14 August 2020 , (College Response), and is available on the Council’s Development I website.

The College Response said the Lanes cafe is not “independent” from St Andrew’s Anglican College – it “will continue to be owned by the Corporation of Synod of the Diocese of Brisbane, which owns the College site and all staff working within the café will continue to be employed by it.

As a result, the Diocese and College will have full control over the operation of the café at all times and will continue to ensure that it operates in accordance with the core values and

Local News purpose of the College, which is to provide a high quality education and environment for its students…”

The College Response goes on to indicate that because “The existing café was approved as part of the Aquatic Centre development by Council in MCU17/2153 and has been operating since the Centre was completed in 2019. As this café was approved it is reasonable to conclude that Council accepted that the sale of food and drink to students, parents and other patrons using the Aquatic Centre was directly associated, and compatible, with the function of the Centre and as such, it was an accepted component of this type of development” adding that Lanes Café core business of serving Aquatic Centre patrons won’t change but approval of the application “will allow it to broaden the range of products that it serves to some of these customers”.. (and) ..“will also allow the facility to widen its client base to include the general public”.

An influx of guests keen for a beer on school grounds weren’t expected to come to the Lanes Cafe if the application was approved as the College Response indicates“.. given its relatively isolated location, its lack of visibility from the street and its direct association with the Aquatic Centre and College, it is considered that the vast majority of its customers will continue to be people visiting the Aquatic Centre or College..”

The College indicated it’s not unusual for alcohol to be served at sports facilities, saying “.. cafés are frequently stablished [sic] in other community facilities such as hospitals and that cafes with liquor licences are common features in a range of indoor sports facilities.”

Other reasons supporting it’s application for change of zoning to approve the Material Change of use at the Café include application approval enabling the Café to be used for “educational purposes as students studying Certificates II & III in Hospitality at the College will work in the café to gain real life experience” and that there is precedent at Ipswich Girls Grammar School “which allows for alcohol to be sold between 10am – 12am Friday – Saturday and 10am to 10pm Sunday to Thursday in designated locations on the site”.

A review of the Ipswich Girls Grammar licence available on Development I as part of the College’s response shows a specific condition of the Grammar licence was that Liquor may only be sold, supplied and consumed at: a) events conducted by the Licensee; or b) functions conducted by other organisations or persons approved by the Licensee..).

The St Andrew’s response to Council goes on to say it is: “Acutely aware of the need to manage the sale of alcohol responsibly at all times”, “The café will not sell alcohol during College hours and to reinforce this, the applicant is happy to accept a condition which limits its sale to the following times during term time: o 4pm – 9pm Monday to Friday o 12am – 9pm Saturday” During School Holidays, the College Response indicates that the Lanes Cafe “would expect to have more flexibility and to sell alcohol in accordance with the hours of a commercial café within the operating hours of the Aquatic Centre”.

As a new addition to Peregian Springs News we are lucky to have Coolum Police officer Senior Constable Maria O’Brien sending us a summary of police matters relating to our area each month and some friendly advice to help beat crime. August’s installment follows:

Domestic Violence incidents; • 13% are property related offences, including stealing, stealing of motor vehicles and stealing from motor vehicles; • and the remaining 27% includes cyber crime, graffiti, trespassing and wilful damage.

For the month of August 2020, there have been a total of 47 reportable Police occurrences for the Peregian Springs suburb.

This is not the number of jobs Police have attended, this is only the number of reportable occurrences.

• 40% of these occurrences are for traffic related offences, including drink driving; • 20% of these occurrences relate to

Councillor Maria Suarez—Division 9 COVID has changed many things, forcing us to become innovative in our thinking and approach to situations. One council program which took on the challenge is the Kids in Action conference.

The conference usually takes place over two days – the first being the Environment Projects Day. Originally planned for May, it would have involved more than 300 students and teachers from 26 different Sunshine Coast schools coming together to explore the theme We are Botanica: Plants for healthy bodies, minds, spirit and planet in workshops and activities.

Instead, council has been busy delivering weekly educational videos to participating schools so students can still connect with nature and culture through this award winning program – and feedback has been excellent.

Peregian Springs State School is one such school. Each week, 10 students in the Year Six Earth Smart Leadership Group meet during lunch to watch a video, discuss the topic and try the activities. In recent feedback, Year Six teacher Ms Hall, said while the students are disappointed they couldn’t attend the first day of the conference, they’ve adapted and have enjoyed the variety of perspectives,

workshops and information the videos offer. One of their favourite videos was of the Kids in Action 2020 Youth Leaders who delivered a message of hope and inspiration to the students.

Sharing their individual journeys showed the students they can follow their environmental passion into high school and beyond.

Another favourite was the sit spot videos which were about finding your own space in nature to be able to sit in peace and absorb nature. This was particularly relevant of late, giving students the know-how to find a space to connect with nature and tune out all the other stresses around them.

Ms Hall added the teachers have also been on a learning journey, and along with the kids, and really valued and appreciated the Indigenous culture incorporated into the videos.

Next up they are about to put lessons into practice, and will attempt to make string out of lomandra they can harvest within the school grounds.

They’ve crossed their fingers with the hope they can participate in a physical event for day two of the conference later in the year to share their learnings and discoveries.

Local Profile - Marion Birkenbeil

Sharing the sweet tastes of Germany FOR Marion Birkenbeil a request for a recipe that her Mum used to make set the wheels in motion for a publishing project somewhat removed from her normal career as a landscape architect.

“Recently a friend in Germany wanted to get a certain cake recipe from my mum, which she still remembered from many years ago,” Marion said.

“And as my Australian nieces always ask me to bake my ‘special cheesecake’ whenever we have a family gathering, I suddenly go the idea to create a baking book with my favourite recipes in both English and German”.

Simply titled Bake a Cake (Backe einen Kuchen in German) the recipe book captures a range of favourites including apple crumble, cherry chocolate cake, cheesecake and a selection of Marion’s own recipes created after experimenting with different flavours.

“One of our friends is a Vegan and therefore I also experimented with some Vegan and raw recipes. I would like to thank my friend Chris for her wonderful assistance, her proofreading of my English text and her testing of my samples!”

It’s not Marion’s first foray into publishing though. In 2013 she wrote an adventure and crime book in German that is set on the Sunshine Coast, and on the food front Marion published Scheherazades FINGER FOOD in German which focuses on dips and finger food - with hints about edible flowers.

For Marion, plants have played a big part in her life. She has a background in horiticulture and has worked on the

Sunshine Coast for the past 13 years as a landscape designer on projects ranging from private residences to schools, streetscapes and residential developments.

Marion’s face will be familiar to local residents of Sundale where she has been a regular volunteer visitor for the residents for the past five years along with her Border Collie.

Asked to pick a favourite recipe to share, Marion suggested her AlmondOrange-Muffins (Vegan).

Ingredients (makes 6) 100g castor sugar 100g almond meal 100g flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 4 tablespoons vegetable oil Juice of a small orange (5 or 6 tbsps) Preparation: Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Place six patty pans into a muffin pan. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl and knead to a smooth dough. Divide dough into six and fill patty pans.

Bake for about 20 minutes on the second lowest rack. Allow to cool for at least 10 minutes.

SPEEDING AND HOONING CONCERNS After meeting with local residents last month, I have been working with the divisional Councillor, Maria Suarez, along with senior officers from the Sunshine Coast District Road Policing Command to tackle the issue of speeding in Peregian Springs.

There is no simple solution to such a serious issue.

It involves a collaborative approach between Council and the State Government that involves not only visual reminders and traffic calming devices, but also greater enforcement and driver education and awareness as part of an overall road safety campaign.

Many of the same offenders who are speeding in and around Peregian Springs are also flouting the laws on our rural roads.

I also recently met with residents on Doonan Bridge Road who are sick and tired of hearing tyres screeching and the smell of rubber burning at all hours of the night.

Hooning is just as dangerous and irresponsible as speeding, and I will continue to work with stakeholders to hold these offenders, who are often young and inexperienced drivers, to account.

QPS have committed to actively target driver behaviour with increased patrols, roadside breath testing and roadside drug testing in Peregian Springs, and I am hopeful that this will 18

go a long way towards improving the situation.

However, this is just the start of a concerted campaign to address road safety across the region.

With around half of all serious speeding crashes occurring at less than 10km/hr about the speed limit, it’s a timely reminder for everyone to be aware of the speed limit, and always drive to the conditions.

Even driving at just 5km/hr about the speed limit in urban areas is enough to double the risk of a casualty.

I encourage everyone in the community to be mindful of road safety, and observe the speed limits.

They are there for a reason.

Federal Member Ted O’Brien

VP DAY

On August 15, we commemorated the 75th Anniversary of VP Day (Victory in the Pacific), the day Australia celebrated the end of WWII. I had the privilege of unveiling a memorial plaque alongside Mr Francis (Frank) McGreevy, the last surviving WWII veteran in the CoolumPeregian RSL sub-branch.

Frank is truly an inspiration and I was delighted to present him with a Commemorative Medallion honouring the service and sacrifice of our living Second World War veterans.

FIRES REMEMBERED

A year ago the communities of Peregian Springs, Peregian Breeze and Peregian Beach were devastated by fire. I want to again thank our firefighters and other emergency personnel who kept our community safe. The way everyone pulled together, then and now - like raising funds for the Verrierdale Rural Fire Brigade - is to be commended.

LOCAL SPORTING CHAMPIONS A big shout out to some local sporting champions. St Andrew’s Anglican College (SAAC) student Lachlan Cook, pictured above with Ted O’Brien, recently competed in the Boys 10-12 years Touch Football State Championships while Tarah Shelley competed for St Andrew’s Swim Club at the School Sport Swimming State Championships.

Peregian Springs residents Sophie Manley and Maxy Kacperski also competed at State Championships for water polo and soccer respectively.

While Stephanie Welsh, also from Peregian Springs, made it to Athletics Australia’s National Championships.

The Local Sporting Champions program provides grants of between $500 and $750 for competitors aged 12-18 participating in state, national or international championships.

Recently we celebrated Seniors Week and with input from my Fairfax Seniors Advisory Council, this year we wanted to encourage young people to talk to their grandparents and hear some of their wonderful stories, so we launched the #hiddenlegends campaign. Children, including students from SAAC, showcased a special senior in their life.

Stay positive in your approach to life Last week I gave a group of students a challenging team building activity.

They had a negative approach toward it and had a number of failed attempts.

We had a discussion and I suggested they change their mentality and consider being more positive.

They made the adjustment and the group dynamic changed considerably and within 10 minutes, they had completed the task successfully.

We should never underestimate the difference a positive mindset can make.

What mind set do you have each day? What mindset do you have when approaching your challenges? What mindset do you have towards your future and goals?

Strangely enough most of us, if we’re honest, entertain far too much negative thinking (about ourselves, goals, challenges etc.) which hinders our potential for success and affects our emotional wellbeing.

My mentor used say, “tell the negative committee that meets inside your head to sit down and shut up”.

How can we develop a positive mindset?

One of my favorite strategies is to start each day with a positive affirmation, e.g.: “It’s going to be a good day”. This can really set the tone and your attitude for the day ahead.

Make sure your self-talk is positive and encouraging. Too often our selftalk is negative and focused on our inability. It requires practice and skill to be consciously aware of your self-talk.

Having motivating and internal conversations in you mind help maintain a positive attitude and outlook. Focus on statements like ‘I can’ and ‘I will’ that are repeated in our mind to influence how we feel and act.

Contest your negative thinking and focus on looking for what is good, even if it’s small. Replace negative thoughts as they enter your mind with a positive alternative. This will help build belief, hope and improve your self-esteem and general wellbeing.

Be aware of what negative influences (friends, social media…) surround you, they could be influencing your negative self-talk, attitude and mindset. Alternatively if you surround yourself with positive people, their attitude will undoubtedly influence yours.

Due to the strange and uncertain times we are in it is more essential than ever to stay positive. Just like the students, our mentality and attitude affects our success and achievements.

Let’s choose to be positive!

SIGN UP NOW ON FOR PEREGIAN NIPPERS WITH Spring upon us it’s that time of year again for water loving youngsters keen to learn more about life saving and have some fun along the way to join the local Nippers.

Peregian Beach Surf Club is in the process of rebuilding its lifesaving presence with the support of Noosa Heads SLSC and is looking to build its Nippers squad and the team of volunteers and supporters required to keep it growing in the right direction.

In terms of volunteering - there are lots of different ways to do it.

Parents who volunteer as Age Managers, Parent Liaisons, Uniform Coordinators and those booked on the upcoming bronze and SRC courses are also welcome to enrol their kids.

“If these jobs are not your thing but you’re handy with the tongs, we are also opening the program up to those who volunteer fortnightly on our nipper BBQ, held at the Peregian Beach Markets on Sunday mornings (when the BBQ returns).”

Congrats Kathryn & Patrick Ridges Recreation Club Community Liaison Officer Kathryn Chandler celebrated a big milestone recently when she married Patrick Wuertz.

The two tied the knot on July 18 at Kathryn’s parent’s Noosa hinterland property.

“We shared our love for one another and committed our lives to each other with our friends and family as our witness. Love, joy, happiness, and pure bliss was all around us. We had the most incredible day of our lives. There was laughter, there were happy tears and we didn't stop smiling the entire day,” Kathryn said.
