The legs on the bus go... MORE HELP to solve traffic and parking issues around Peregian Springs State School might be a step away with a ‘walking school bus’ idea being discussed by Neighbourhood Watch Coolum 10 (Peregian Springs) and Coolum Police. The Walking School Bus is a virtual school bus designed to encourage children to walk to and from school and offers parents and children an alternative to short car trips. Neighbourhood Watch Coolum 10 (Peregian Springs) has funding from NHW Australasia to help start the program at Peregian Springs State School and a trial could start before the end of term. Area Coordinators Leigh Boggis and Paula Lyall say children gain travel skills and confidence while increasing their physical activity levels, safe routes to school are actively in use and traffic congestion around the school is reduced. Coolum Police Officers, Volunteers in Policing and members of the Neighbourhood Watch Group will be actively involved however assistance from parents will also be required. Many say congestion in the state school carpark, which is controlled by Council, along with The Avenue outside the school, has eased with the successful school crossing, better signage and police presence...
