The power of one RIDGES and the rest of Peregian Springs plus Peregian Breeze look set to become one big happy family under a new State seat of Ninderry in the first state government boundary redraw in nine years.

The new Ninderry seat is one of four new seats proposed in Queensland and if approved will bring all of Peregian Springs together.

Peregian Springs is currently divided into the electorate of Nicklin, taking in Ridges, held by Independent MP Peter Wellington, and Noosa taking in the rest of Peregian Springs held by the LNPs Glen Elmes.

With the State government election able to be called anytime, the area was set for a political shake up anyway with Peter Wellington saying he was retiring at the election.

Now we potentially have a new politician to choose for our proposed new seat.

Ninderry also is set to take in areas like Coolum Beach, Eumundi, Doonan,

Verrierdale and Weyba Downs.

Electoral boundaries are reassessed generally every 7.5 years by the Queensland Redistribution Commission. To page 4

Lots of great local businesses are advertising in this edition including Andrew Mountford, Peregian Springs resident and local Authorised Representative for LaTrobe Financial. Also, Peregian Springs local and a top Aussie Mortgage Broker Trevor Ryan and team have opened their new shop at Coolum.

In local sports- Local Peregian junior golf talent Cassie Porter, has made it to the Queensland Golf's Girls State Team last week, and at 14 years of age the Peregian Golf website says she is the youngest member of the team. Congratulations Cassie and all the best for the upcoming competition!

The Pavilions Caretaker says some trees that have become distressed recently due to the environment they are in at the cnr of Curlew Way and Pavilion Dr will be cleared. Replanting of the same trees and more to replace those removed is happening. The Body Corporate is aware and supportive of the distressed tree removal.

Bushfire awareness on agenda IN the wake of the recent battle with bushfires on our doorstep in Peregian Springs local fire authorities have put together an awareness event to be held on March 29 at the Peregian Springs State School.

The free information evening will include guest speakers from the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Sunshine Coast Regional Council, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the SEQ Fire and Biodiversity Consortium.

They will talk about how bushfires are managed in our local area, how fire interacts with the environment and how you can best prepare your property for bushfire.

Date: Wednesday 29th March.

Location: Peregian Springs State School Hall, The Avenue, Peregian Springs Time: 7pm arrival for 7:30pm start light refreshments provided.

Local News— FROM PAGE 1: The reason for the reassessment is to balance numbers of people in each electorate and given our area has had a population increase in the last 5 years, it is perhaps unsurprising a new seat would feature on the Sunshine Coast.

Peregian Springs Residents Association (PSRA Inc) says the proposal makes sense.

“It will make it easier to lobby a single, yet-to-be-elected, state Member of Parliament when advocating on behalf of our community,” Greg Smith, Secretary of PSRA Inc said.

New Seat of Ninderry half of Peregian Springs, Glen Elmes says he has proudly represented the electorate for more than 10 years.

“I am saddened to potentially lose several communities as part of this major redistribution, the first of its kind in decades,” Mr Elmes said.

“I have looked after these wonderful neighbourhoods for a long time and have many friends and associations with residents who work very hard to look after community and environmental groups, sporting groups, service clubs, business and school groups to grow and prosper,” Mr Elmes said.

Mr Elmes says it has been an honour to serve all that he will potentially lose.

“However the Coast is a small place and I will be visiting from time to

time,” he said.

The Commission chose Ninderry after the prominent local mountain. It is also said to be the name of a legendary Aboriginal warrior who was turned into a mountain The Queensland Redistribution Commission has published its Redistribution Proposal for Queensland’s Electoral Districts and is inviting objections to its proposal which close at 5pm, Monday 27 March 2017.

Following the public objections period, the Commission will then invite 'comments on the objections'.

Course renovation rescue complete...

RENOVATIONS to the playing surfaces at Peregian Golf Club are now complete.

Golf Services Management’s Ian Denny said the Club expects to return to charging full prices from March 17.

The prices had dropped to a 9-hole fee while renovations were underway.

With the liquor licence approved, preparations for opening of the Sports Bar are in full swing. In a recent update to newsletter subscribers GSM said they have “new furniture and a range of TV’s that will be showing Foxtel arriving very shortly — it’s going to be a great place to have a drink and relax so watch this space.”

Rocking Summer event has retirees feeling the beat CLASSIC hits from 50’s & 60’s rang out at Aveo Peregian Springs Country Club last month attracting 60 guests.

Old 45 Band entertained the crowd in Gracemere Manor bringing smiles all around.

Residents Mary and Roger White said the day was “Fab”.

Mary said: “Having grown up in Liverpool, having been a member of the Cavern Club and having had a drink with John Lennon, this event

was right up my street. My husband, Roger and I dressed up as ‘Hippie Rockers’ which was fun and took us back to the days when this type of fashion was all the rage.”

“But it was the music that really brought back so many memories of such a special time in our lives – music that you just have to dance to.”

“We certainly rocked the afternoon away and it was a privilege to be a part of it.”

Local News

Balgownie application on hold AN application to rezone around 1664m2 of land off Balgownie Drive from Sport and Recreation to Residential has been “placed on hold temporarily” by the developer, according to Council.

The application by FKP Residential attracted a large number of public submissions last October objecting to the rezone.

The land sits at the edge of the golf course between the 6th and 7th fairway. Up until February 2016 the land was golf course land. At that point, FKP Residential successfully had the golf course boundary moved and the parcel became part of the estate parcel. It still carried a “Sport and Recreation” zoning though.

In its planning report to Council , the developer did not refer to the change as a rezoning — rather a “material change of use component” and “proposed reconfiguration”.

The developer has played down the proposed change saying it’s of “minor nature”.

“The proposal is for residential development within the Sport and Recreation Zone, however it is argued that the minor nature of the development will not result in any adverse impacts with respect to access, use or landscape amenity of the existing golf course.

“Therefore, it is not considered necessary to provide further detailed assessment against the Sport and Recreation Code in this instance.”

The Developer also said “the proposal will not result in any adverse impacts on environmental,landscape 8

or recreational values of the area..”

However, the Peregian Springs Residents Association said there are many reasons to object to the rezoning, one of which is the precedent it would set for rezoning other Sport and Recreation land here and across the Sunshine Coast.

The future of the application appears uncertain as the reason for the hold on the application is unclear as is how long the hold is for.

“The application will not lapse in its current process stage, it will remain alive until it is either withdrawn by the applicant or determined by council,” the Council spokesperson said.

“When the applicant is ready to proceed with the application, council officers will consider all submissions and prepare a report to be presented at a future council meeting,” the Council Spokesperson said.

“The decision on whether the application is approved or refused will be made by council at the time of the meeting, following the council officer’s presentation and council debate.”

Local News— In Brief BODY CORPORATE NEWS EAST Village Body Corporate and The Ridge Body Corporate Chairs attended the QCAT Tribunal in Brisbane on February 27 in front of Justice Carmody to seek a “stay” of last October’s decision by the Body Corporate and Community Management Commission to allow the Principal Body Corporate to sign long term agreements with contractors.

East Village Ridges’ Chair Roger Cook said: “We are asking QCAT to consider that the BCCM erred in their decision to find in favour of the PBC against the test of reasonableness. In that it is not reasonable that 5 Aveo employees/ associates who don't live here or pay in to the scheme can decide to spend $4.4 to 5million of our money over the next 10 years against the wishes of the democratically elected representatives of more than 600 owners and 4 of the eventual 7 Sub BC in the scheme.”

Justice Carmody is yet to release his decision. A date is also yet to be set for any formal appeal of last year’s decision.

PSRA UPDATE– Greg Smith, Secretary OSCAR: The PSRA Management Committee has agreed to join OSCAR (Organisation of Sunshine Coast Association of Residents) as a member.

OSCAR is the peak body for community associations on the Coast and we feel membership will give us access to additional support and a stronger link with other similar member organisations.

Regain Hope Charity raises money for the cause via the regain Hope Charity store and Vintage Alley Collective in Noosaville which gratefully accepts donations of surplus clothes and any other household items – toys, books, furniture, camping equipment, homewares etc. The store is in desperate need of volunteers to help with everything from basic sorting to retail, all the way to maintenance and upkeep.

Brit Drummond helps manage the store and says their small group of volunteers have been working tirelessly since before Christmas and any help from

Local Profile— Jeff Watson

Actor, driver and community man...

IF PEREGIAN Springs had a family tree, Jeff Watson would be its Grandfather.

Jeff. pictured right with his granddaughter Jasmin, has been looking after Peregian Springs before he began living here and we have him to thank for the Duck Pond Park.

As an Environment Officer with Maroochy Council in the late 1990s Jeff helped examine the developer’s plans for the area and make recommendations. It was he who suggested the Duck Pond reserve be built as a large area for people to play, contrary, Jeff says, to the developer’s plans for a series of small neighbourhood parks.

It seems family and community have always been a big focus of Jeff’s life. After leaving the family farm in Young, country New South Wales, he trained in the elite forces as a sniper with the Commonwealth police (now the AFP) protecting everything from Airports to Prime Ministers then spent many years taxi driving with flexible hours for family work-life balance even before it was the norm in society.

After moving to the Sunshine Coast in 1985 with wife Virginia and 2 kids, then 3 and 1, family remained the focus. Jeff took on the lead parent role after Virginia landed a prestigious hair styling role upon arrial after a chance meeting in a checkout line with Faye Rolph, the Head of one of Australia’s biggest modelling agencies.

His leadership instinct and love of education kicked in during regular visits to his kids’ playgroup, the Maroochydore Preschool “Mothers” 18

Club, where he became the President (and presided over the Group’s name change to make it more inclusive of Dads as primary carers).

After blazing the trail for other Dads, his career took him to Council, owning and operating his own taxis and even running for local government in 2004 and 2008 because he “wanted to look after people”.

Balancing paid work with family he also volunteered as President of the Distance Education P and C for a time.

Since moving to Peregian Springs nearly 3 years ago in his “retirement” he has continued his passion for stage and screen acting, writing short stories for a popular national magazine and penning poems for family members and even volunteering for a year as the PSSS P and C President helping bring in the school crossing and ramp.

He’s now still helping out locals with a bit of competition for the local taxi industry as a driver partner with Ubergoing by the booking nickname online “Pa Uber”. With his ride booking licence (a relatively new category of driving licence in Queensland) he finds passengers from the Uber app and also takes separate private bookings via email and his mobile.

Jeff says people privately book him and the vehicle, to go to Brisbane or even to pick up the kids from school because they know him and know who they are going to get every time .

Chappy’s Column— Family Focus

Stay calm as teenagers grow EVERY year I always hear about the challenge parents face as their child begins adolescence.

I recently had a dodgy light bulb that flickered on and off until I got it fixed.

Maturity starts to emerge around 13 or 14 for a teenager but can be very much like a dodgy light bulb. One minute they can be kind and caring thoughtful, nice.... and the next they can be thoughtless, self-obsessed, rude and filled with attitude. They can be wildly overemotional and high risks takers.

Take heart this yo-yo like behavior is typical of the start of adolescence. One main reason why this happens is that the teenage brain is setting up its centre of control in the prefrontal cortex (front part of the brain), the part of brain that I like to call the smart (thinking) brain. Teenagers can go there, but only for short periods of time as they function largely out of the part of the brain called the amygdala. It is the centre of impulsive and emotional reactions which likes to takes over

in a flash if pressured, distracted, stressed or fearful.

In short what this behavior signifies is the start of your teenager beginning to find themselves, their identity and who they are. It is important not to see this as a stage where your child is pushing you away, rather a time where you can encourage and assist them to discover themselves. While your teenager may be particularly difficult at times don’t abandon them as they need you more than ever. Listen to them, have discussions (not heated arguments), grant them some leeway and space, agree to disagree and help them discover who they are.

It can be a tough stage for both parent and teenager alike and I empathise with you as you begin these next 5 years. I highly recommended Steve Biddulph’s books Raising Girls and Raising Boys as valuable resources.

From an unassuming red roof “shed” at Coolum, Peregian Springs locals, husband and wife team Stevie and Mari Pye, pictured, offer Yahpit Muay Thai — teaching the routines and techniques of the physical and mental combat discipline used for fitness, self-defence and kickboxing.

Stevie and Mari say the sport appeals to all ages and abilities as it combats our high stress, sedate lifestyle while giving physical satisfaction and making us think differently. They say club members include five-year-olds building coordination and having fun, school children building self-esteem and confidence, and people overweight, in fragile health or post-baby, of all ages, wanting to get fit under instruction.

People wanting to fight nationally and internationally also train with Stevie.

The training is diverse and unless you want to be a fighter it’s not about hand-to-hand combat. It involves everything from cardio, stretching, body resistance and core work, kicking and punching with bags and pads and sparring in a controlled, safe, friendly, evenly-matched way.

Mari and Stevie’s experience and personal approach allow them to supervise and tailor the activities to whatever the person’s goal might be.

Stevie, with over 20 years Muay Thai kickboxing experience, many of those as a fighter, has taught the discipline for over seven years. He also has a creative writing degree and is completing a postgraduate qualification in teaching to enhance his role as head trainer to all age groups.

Mari has over 20 years’ in various martial arts and physical fitness pursuits. She also has Disability Services qualifications and has worked extensively in the field.

Stevie and Mari say they love the sport and the fact it’s a business they have grown and can share the skills is a bonus. “It builds confidence with the Juniors,” Mari says, “If they are getting picked on at school it often stops because of the way they carry themselves …with that confidence”.

Stevie says he prides the gym on a sense of community. “It is about building confidence, discipline and respect. No attitude or egos are welcome,” he says.

After growing out of their Peregian Springs garage, with the support of the Coolum Colts Football Club, the Yahpit Muay Thai gym was born in 2016. It now offers Ladies circuit classes, Kids and Young adult classes, controlled sparring sessions with evenly matched partners and individual fighter training sessions with Stevie, at times to suit all lifestyles.

Yahpit fighting team members from juniors to adults regularly competing in Queensland and interstate with travel each year to Thailand.

Legal Matters with ...

Be sure to look after your body in life and death LEGAL MATTERS with Fiona Allen BCom, LLB, LLM, TEP Phone: 5302 7933 AFTER you pass away, Executors named in your Will carry out a number of roles. Arguably the two most important roles are to dispose of the deceased’s body and administer the estate.

Most commonly bodies are cremated without incident. The family and loved ones agree with what should occur and the burial or cremation occurs as agreed.

Unfortunately at times there can be disagreement as to what is to occur with the body of a loved one.

Recently an indigenous man passed away*. His mother wanted his burial to accord with traditional customs, however his de facto spouse wished for him to be cremated. After an urgent Court hearing, it was determined that his body was to be cremated.

The Court found that the deceased had left ‘signed instructions’ to be cremated despite, amongst other things, his Will Kit Will having both buried and cremated circled and it also containing the vague instruction

of “cremated is my wish of burial”.

Legislation states that if an Executor knows the deceased has left ‘signed instructions’ for the remains to be cremated, an application to be cremated must be made in accordance with the Cremations Act 2003 (Qld). In addition, no one can object to the remains being cremated.

The best place to leave ‘signed instructions’ is in a Will. It is also worthwhile telling the Executor of this as a Will may not be reviewed until after the funeral and cremation or burial.

There is no similar legislation for burials. So unlike cremations, leaving ‘signed instructions’ to be buried may not be the end of the matter.

As with most things, some prior thought and a well drafted Will may resolve potential issues before they become actual issues, at an already stressful time.

Broadly, an SMSF Investment Strategy:  Specifies the objectives of the SMSF  States the risk tolerance of the SMSF  Outlines how the SMSF can and should be invested so as to meet the outlined objectives  Specifies what liquidity is required  Addresses any insurance needs for members Since 1 July 2012, it has been a requirement of SMSF’s that the Investment Strategy must be reviewed “regularly”. Whilst there is no firm regulatory guidance on what “regularly” means, it would be sensible to consider this issue annually. Certainly when there is a change to the objective of the SMSF, such as commencing a pension, or as the requirement to draw the minimum pension amount increases, the Investment Strategy should be reviewed.

How often should I check and potentially rebalance my Australian Equities Portfolio to be invested in accordance with the SMSF Investment Strategy?

SMSF trustees should review their Australian equities portfolio at least annually in the period leading up to the end of the financial year.

Some SMSF trustees review and rebalance their portfolio if required at mid-financial year (that is, by 31 December).

We suggest that it is preferable to have a reasonable period of time in which to make changes and rebalance the portfolio, rather than make last minute changes.

On 1 July 2017 it will be too late to rebalance your portfolio, if required, to ensure it is invested in accordance with the SMSF Investment Strategy on 30 June 2017.

All SMSFs must be audited annually by an ASIC registered SMSF auditor.

If an SMSF is not invested in accordance with the Investment Strategy, the auditor will note this.

“Safe, Inclusive and Connected Neighbourhoods and Online Communities” March 2017 update WE are working on some exciting projects in the coming months.

TAG AND TEST DAY - APRIL Coolum 10 NHW have secured funding to purchase engraving equipment and are currently in the process of organising a morning session where residents will be able to bring down their bikes, scooters and skateboards for engraving. We will also be holding a tag and test day where you can bring your electrical appliances down for a free safety check. Stay tuned!

WALKING SCHOOL BUS We haven’t forgotten the Walking School Bus, in fact we recently met with representatives of the Buderim Lions Walk to School Program.

Their program is going strong in a number of schools across the Sunshine Coast and they had a lot of useful information to share with us.

The key message we got was we need to make it fun for the kids – we couldn’t agree more!

Over the next few weeks we will be busy working out the best walking routes that are safe but also help parents to avoid the congested school zone.
