Golfer’s Christmas comes early THE clubs will be swinging for real again this week as Peregian Golf Club opens its doors for full rounds of golf from December 15, adding some Christmas cheer to the end of a tough year for local golf lovers.

Since the announcement that Victorian based company Golf Services Management (GSM) had been granted a five year lease with a further five year option, to run the golf course as a commercial, public, golf course, activity around the grounds had ramped up.

GSM director Ian Denny said the group had been working “around the clock” to get the driving range opened last weekend, followed by the course opening this week.

An email to golfers on December 9 said from December 15 to January 4 all play at the club will be on a social basis, with competitions and online booking capabilities starting on January 5.

It also said all handicaps and golflink numbers had been transferred from Peregian Springs Golf Club to Peregian Golf Club and would remain valid until December 20 at which point they would cease. It noted though that those who wished to let their handicap lapse and to come back at a later date, their handicap history should remain intact.

From the Ed’s desk I can hardly believe it’s Christmas! What a year it has been. So many changes for our local community this year and so much to look forward to! We have a new residents group , new dining offering, a new golf course operator and new course structure.

With residential development applications for the golf course and golf course closure earlier this year galvanizing support for a new residents group, the Peregian Springs Residents Association, the area now has one voice to take to government, developers and other groups in the community to guide change.

Dorney & Bear has opened in the centre at Cnr Balgownie and Peregian Springs Dve with a new dining, drinks and market offering and our new golf course Peregian Golf has its driving range now open with the course opening on December 15.

We also have the new Havana Nights Twilight Markets running each fortnight.

A new play space for youth is also an exciting possibility for the New Year. Public comment closes on 16 December.

We’ve also welcomed many new residents to our area - and said farewell to a few too - one to mention is the Davies family. Tarn established Peregian Shares and Cares to help locals doing it tough and the family has left a lasting legacy to this area.

As the year closes from me personally, thank you so much to my advertisers a heartfelt thanks for your support as without you I would not be able to print the magazine.

THE HAVANA Nights Twilight Market is the brainchild of busy mum of four Lea Evans, a Sunshine Coast resident of 20 years, with the last 6 in Peregian Springs.

Lea’s background in marketing and entrepreneurial spirit – having started her own designer, recycled, vintage and hand crafted furniture business and styling showroom gave her a knack for taking an idea and giving it a life and personality of it’s own.

This skill has served her well in her successful career in styling events and restaurants and led to a love of event management.

Lea started her first market when the chance arose to join forces with Regain Hope, a local charity raising awareness and funds to stop human trafficking.

Called the “Alleyway Project” Lea described the event as a “unique creative market and very popular”. “The Alleyway project was so successful in raising awareness and funds for Regain Hope that we knew we wanted to keep the idea going.”

TWILIGHT MARKET FUN: The next markets are on December 24 from 4.00 - 8.00pm.

The Twilight Markets are set to be held every 2nd and 4th Saturday from 4.00pm to 8.00pm at the Recreation Fields, 220 The Avenue, Peregian Springs. for Regain Hope but also supporting other local charities, sporting, dance and school groups, by providing an opportunity for them to have a regular space for fundraising,” Lea said.

Another aim for the new markets in Peregian Springs, Lea says, is to give the community a platform for local families and businesses to display and sell their products on a regular basis at a time that people can put in their diaries and come together to “enjoy socialising within their own community within a family-friendly environment.”

The market took almost 12 months of work to establish with many meetings, car parking strategies, environmental impact reports, support letters and much more needed to obtain the appropriate permits and stall holders, Lea said.

“There were times when I thought this is never going to happen,” Lea said. However, the “mammoth” effort was possible with help from others.

A stand out moment for Lea was on opening night cutting the red ribbon next to four inspiring women, Tarn Davies (Peregian Springs Shares and Cares, Jodie Curren (Agent 4573) Ingrid Olsen (Regain Hope) and Andrea Duff (Love Your Doorstep).

“We have a community full of kind, inspiring people and it is so exciting to finally provide our residents with their very own local market...we aim to grow the market to be an exciting and wonderfully unique, high quality market just like our community,” Lea said The Havana Nights Twilight Markets Team encourages residents to be environmentally friendly and walk or ride to the market if they are able.

Bodies corporate rule in Ridges RIDGES by-laws - they govern every owner and resident in Ridges and cover just about every aspect of life in that part of the Estate from noise, pets, parking, body corporate fees and charges, rec club access, roaming animals and the list goes on.

Following our story on the Ridges body corporate structure last month, Peregian Springs News has been investigating how the by-laws in the area are enforced. The body corporate structure apparently makes Council powerless to act, at least where animal control (an issue raised by readers) is concerned, due to the structure and the by-laws in place.

“Sunshine Coast Council cannot regulate animal management within

The Ridges estate in Peregian Springs,” a Council spokesperson said, “The Ridges is operated by a body corporate with a Community Management Statement, in which the estate by-laws are included. The body corporate is the governing agent of the statement and the by-laws. The regulation of animal management issues rests solely with the body corporate.”

Council says absolute discretion rests with the body corporate to impose penalties against a dog owner for breaching the by-laws “if the owner can be identified”.

“Council does not perform patrols within the private grounds of a body corporate area,” the spokesperson

If there was however a serious public safety and amenity issue, such as a dog attack that occurred on a publicly accessible area, a road or public space, within The Ridges estate, Council would intervene the Council spokesperson said.

Homeowners can make complaints about by-law matters to their Village committee representatives but ultimately many issues may rest with the Principal Body Corporate (which is mainly currently comprised of Developer representatives). We asked two Ridges Body Corporate management firms for details of how body corporate by-law enforcement works in Ridges. We’ll let you know when we get a response.

Once a complaint is received from a resident the relevant Village Committee may then instruct their Body corporate managers to a send out breach notices. BC management firms are responsible for sending out committee voting papers, breach notices and the like in accord with Qld Body Corporate legislation.

Given the major impact by-laws have on the look, feel and comfort of Ridges life and that the Bodies Corporate are responsible for enforcing by-laws issues, homeowners who want to have more say in their local area governance may join their Village body corporate committee.

A Holdings statement said now GSM had signed the lease, the reduction of the Holdings board of six members to three matches the

Nomination forms for the non-Aveo director role at Holdings are expected to be mailed to shareholders in the new year.

Half interchange work underway ROADWORKS are underway on the Sunshine Coast Motorway to the south of the Peregian Springs Drive roundabout heading towards Coolum that will eventually see a new entrance to Peregian Springs via the Ridges end of the Estate.

To keep the community informed, an Aveo Group Spokesperson provided us with an impression of the half interchange and an explanation of what’s intended.

“It will take traffic heading north on the Sunshine Motorway (from Maroochydore direction) into the community, and people wanting to head south will be able to use it to get onto the Motorway,” the Spokesperson said. “It will take a lot of the traffic off

The work is expected to take around 12 months to complete.

Local News—Manor Moments Village residents celebrate a busy month of fun IT HAS been a year of fun times and giving spirit at the Aveo Peregian Springs Country Club retirement Village with special anniversaries and milestones and heartwarming stories a plenty with our wonderful, wise Seniors so generously giving their time in their Village community and the wider community to make us all richer for it.

Here are a couple more stories with notable achievements and tales of Village fun from the last month.

Toy and Craft Charity Event

LEUKAEMIA Foundation’s Megan Blears was delighted with a cheque for $2,272 raised at the Annual Craft and Toy Fundraiser at Aveo Peregian Springs Country Club Retirement Village in November.

The crafty, creative Village residents sew, knit, paint and create up a storm all year which culminates in 14

the event to help raise money for Leukaemia Foundation and provide much needed toy donations to local emergency accommodation and hospitals.

Resident Vi knitted over 160 ‘trauma teddies’ which are used in hospitals and in ambulances to give comfort to kids in distress. The event raised in total $3,218, once all proceeds after the event were tallied- all to the Leukaemia Foundation.

Melbourne Cup Fun for residents

Punters Club a hit- A CLUB started by a Village resident for those keen on a little flutter has been a hit with many at the Village this year. One member chosen to have a punt and invest the groups few small dollars on any horse in any horserace in Australia on the Saturday. If the member won, they got to choose again the next week– if not the punt passed to another. Far from a serious endeavour, the club has brought a wide range of residents together for a bit of fun of the flutter.

Container deposit scheme shines bright

2016 HAS been another busy year in Parliament and in the Noosa Electorate.

As I reflect on the year that was, among my most memorable moments include the announcements that a reelected LNP government will introduce a container deposit scheme and most recently to ban single use plastic bags. Both of these commitments signal a bright and sustainable future for our environment, in Queensland and our local paradise.

Newcomers to the area may not know that the Peregian Community took up the fight against plastic bags some years ago and are well known throughout the Electorate of Noosa for their stance.

Many of us re-use our supermarket plastic bags, however while we think this is recycling the fact remains that it takes 1000 years for each of those shopping bags to fully decompose. Some of us have also been falsely comforted by the term ‘biodegradable’, alas these bags do not break down particularly in water, rather they break up and pose an even greater risk to marine wildlife that ingest them.

Queenslanders use around one billion plastic bags every year and the average family collects more than 60 per week.

Since making the announcement it has come to my notice that there is confusion around the extent of the policy. It is important to note that barrier bags for fruit, vegetables and meat will not be banned and neither will heavy retail bags, bring-your-own bags, and paper bags.

Chappy’s Column— Family Focus

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas MY FAMILY went to look at the Christmas light displays and my nearly 2-year-old daughter was totally mesmerised by them.

What do you love most about this time of year? For me some things I enjoy are the carols and different productions community groups put on, being on holidays, eating, and putting up the Christmas tree and decorations.

But the thing I like most about this time of year is the opportunity to extend kindness to others and the joy it can give them when you do. I came across this story and it reminded me just how impacting kindness can be.

When I was 16, I ran away from home because the streets were safer than the house in which I'd been raised. The death of my father several years earlier had affected my mother so much that she was given to fits of uncontrollable violence. After a particularly brutal incident, I grabbed my coat, ran through the front door and did not return. It was winter, and it was Christmas, and there was nowhere to sleep without risking the possibility of freezing to death. I found a church with unlocked doors and that night, and for several nights thereafter, I slept on a bench far in the back corner. I woke up constantly afraid of being discovered and turned out. One morning, I found myself covered with a blanket. Someone had discovered me. Instead of throwing me into the snow, he or she made sure I was warm. I have never had the chance to tell the person how much that single act of kindness has meant to my life. Whenever I am 26

overwhelmed in the festive season I remember the blanket and discover more good will somewhere within myself.

Kindness can take many shapes and forms. It could be giving a gift to someone less fortunate than you, time spent with someone who is alone, a donation to a charity, a Christmas card or even something as simple as a word of encouragement or a smile.

My final tip for the year is simple. Let’s remember the meaning of Christmas and extend kindness to those that are around us and in need.

A little smile, a word of cheer, a bit of love from someone near, a little gift to one held dear, or best wishes for the coming year--These make a Merry Christmas.

This year will be your last opportunity to contribute at the current limits.  There will be a $1.6 million limit imposed on pension funds.  Transition to retirement (TTR) pensions will no longer be exempt from tax on investment earnings.

Who will be affected?

These changes to superannuation legislation affect almost all Australians and you should get some professional advice on how they will impact you personally. You will be especially affected by these changes if:

 You want to contribute as much as you can into superannuation, as soon as possible.  You will have $1.6 million or more in superannuation on 30 June 2017  You have a transition to retirement pension Once these new changes to superannuation come into effect on 1 July 2017, you will no longer be able to take advantage of some of the more favourable aspects of the current legislation. “Safe, Inclusive and Connected Neighbourhoods and Online Communities” December 2016 update IN November a few of us were lucky enough to attend the Neighbourhood Watch Queensland State Conference.

The theme was “Strengthen the connection of our neighbourhoods”.

Not only were the Victoria and Story Bridges lit up in green and white for the occasion, but we also got to network with other Neighbourhood Watch groups to share ideas and success stories. We all returned with the motivation to turn some of those ideas into reality for our community.

Stay tuned for some exciting times in 2017!

By now we hope everyone is getting ready for the Peregian Springs Christmas Spectacular and Carols on 15th December. Both Coolum 9 and 10 Neighbourhood Watch groups will be at this event providing a Tag a Tot service for those with young children.

The idea of the program is we provide you with ID Bands for your children to wear which you can add your personal contact details to just in case the child wanders during the evening. We hope everyone will take advantage of this free service.

Leading into the holiday season we want to remind everyone that many of the thefts in our area are a result of garages and motor vehicles being left unlocked. Get into the habit of locking up, even if you are home!
