Cr Robinson calls time - p11 DO THE BUS STOP: Work on new bus stops at Ridges Boulevard outside Peregian Springs State School appears to be nearing an end. The stops are yet to appear on any routes.

What’s coming in 2020 WITH just 68 lots left to be sold within the Peregian Springs estate, 2020 marks what’s likely to be the end of concentrated land sales in the area.

Of those homesites, 23 have been created on the eastern side of the water tower, in a precinct called The Address, while the majority of the others fall into a new release on the western side, The Vistas.

The wait continues to find out what’s happening with

the proposed multi-storey unit development at Koel Circuit near the Peregian Springs Shopping Centre.

The latest information on Council’s website has a hold on the assessment of the application while the developer answers queries and completes new drawings.

There has been no further news on the land parcel adjacent to Arcare, although it’s sure to be a spot to watch this year.

Welcome to the first edition of Peregian Springs News for February … 2020! It’s still strange saying that.

After a month’s break there is plenty of information to share in this edition.

First up we take a look at the Bushfire Enquiry, with chairman Ted O’Brien calling for local input to his committee to help guide decision making for the future, particularly in the area of bush management and fuel loads (see page 3).

The next big news event on the horizon is the March 28 local government election which is sure to generate plenty of interest in the next seven weeks or so. At this point three candidates have put their hands up for your vote in Division 9, and our Councillor of eight years, Stephen Robinson is not among them. We wish Cr Robinson all the best on his career after politics … it’s been a few years since we helped officially launch the Peregian

Springs Dog Park, delivery of which is one of the highlights he lists in his final question and answer with us on page 9.

There’s plenty to celebrate for local residents nominated for Australia Day Awards. Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie, recently named the patron for netball on the Sunshine Coast, shares the Australia Day Awards list for the area on page 26.

Congrats to all nominated and those who were recognised this year for their efforts for the community.

Our local schools are back and its astounding to think that between Peregian Springs State School, Coolum State High School, Peregian Beach College and St Andrew’s Anglican College there are nearly 3000 young people loading up their school bags every day and heading off to learn all they can about the world they live in. It also means plenty of traffic on the roads, so remember to stay safe in the school zones.

Bushfire inquiry seeks input AS the horror bushfire season continues to wreak havoc in New South Wales and Canberra, the push is on to find out why it was so intense in 2019 and 2020 and what can be done in the future to lessen the chance of this happening again.

Early last December, at the Federal Government level, the House of Representatives Standing Committee on the Environment accepted a request of the Minister for Natural Disaster and Emergency Management to inquire into the impact of past and current vegetation and land management policies on bushfires.

As Chair of the Committee , Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien (LNP) is urging Sunshine Coast organisations and

residents to have their say. He has also met with locals affected by the fires in Peregian and Peregian Springs last year to understand their experiences and try and identify the challenges those particular events created for those involved.

“These fires are devastating,” said Mr O’Brien.

“Their impact extends far beyond damage to the natural and built environment, by threatening people’s lives and livelihoods.”

“This inquiry provides an opportunity to better understand the effectiveness of laws, vegetation and land management practices, mitigation strategies and emergency service engagement. Cont ..page 4

Local News: Bushfire Inquiry From page 3 “Our local firies have been out there fighting fires across the region stretching from Gympie to Noosa Northshore and Peregian to Beerwah..

I understand that people may have very passionate views about this topic, particularly in light of the current bushfire season, and I hope they might find the time to make a submission to the inquiry.”

The Committee’s inquiry is in response to a referral ,in December 2019, from the Minister for Natural Disaster and Emergency Management David Littleproud who asked the Committee to inquire into: • past and current practices of land and vegetation management; the impact of current legislation and regulatory responses for landholders; • the scientific basis behind relevant

bushfire management activities; • legislative capability at the local, state and federal levels requiring landholders to reduce fire risk on properties; • the economic impact of severe fires in urban, regional, rural and remote areas; • the progress and implementation of various state reviews over the last decade; • and the engagement of emergency services with land management officials in managing fire risk.

If you would like to contribute to the inquiry, you can make a submission.

Submissions will be accepted until 28 February 2020.

The Committee intends to hold public hearings at various locations, which will be announced in due course on the inquiry website.

Local News: Council Elections 2020

Council election day nears THE countdown is on to the March 28, 2020, local government elections and, as of February 2, in our readership of Peregian Breeze and Peregian Springs, residents have three candidates to choose from to be their next Division 9 Sunshine Coast Regional Councillor.

Daniel Bryar (https://greens.org.au/ qld/person/daniel-bryar), Daren Edwards (https://darenedwards.com) and Maria Suarez (https:// mariasuarez.com/) have confirmed their nominations and are already out meeting people and seeking support.

Any other potential candidates have until March 3 to declare themselves in the running.

Residents have until February 28 to ensure their details are up to date on the electoral role to enable them to vote for their preferred candidate.

For the first time at a local election, all candidates in 2020 are required complete an online candidate training module devised by the State Government to ensure they understand the responsibilities and obligations that go hand in hand with taking on a councillor role.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the training was integral to promoting community confidence in the sector.

“Queenslanders deserve representation of the highest calibre and mandatory training will mean they have elected officials who have a better understanding of their responsibilities and obligations when serving their communities,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“This was an important recommendation in the Crime and 6

Corruption Commission’s Operation Belcarra Report and will make sure all candidates go in with their eyes wide open about what is required during the campaign and as a councillor once elected.”

The training includes information such as obligations in relation to reporting donations and expenditure during the campaign as well as the requirement to have a dedicated bank account.

It also details responsibilities once elected, such as understanding conflicts of interest, the Code of Conduct and requirements involved with a councillor’s register of interests.

The ECQ proposes to publish the Notice of Election on Saturday, 22 February 2020.

The caretaker period for all councils will start upon publication of the notice on the ECQ’s website.

Key dates listed on the Electoral Commission of Queensland’s website (www.ecq.qld.gov.au) related to the elections include the ballot paper draw on March 4, and early voting commencing from March 16.

Locally, Peregian Family and Friends and OSCAR Inc have organised a Meet the Candidates event for 10am to NOON on Saturday, February 22 at the Peregian Springs Golf Club.

The suggested format for this event is a short presentation by each candidate to the audience, followed by a Q & A and then a meet and greet on a more informal, one-on-one basis.

Local News—Council Elections 2020

Div 9 Councillor signing off AS the candidates start to line up for our vote in March in the battle for Division 9, Councillor Stephen Robinson, pictured right, our Councillor for the past 8 years, will not be on the ballot. We caught up with Cr Robinson one last time and asked about his decision not to run and what’s next.

Q1. What factors led to the decision elect not to re-stand?

This was a tough decision but ultimately the decision not to run again came down to the need to assist in some family health challenges that requires me to spend more of my time at home.

As you can appreciate, this isn’t possible given the councillor role requires a strong time commitment outside of normal working hours.

Q2. What do you consider to be the greatest achievements in Peregian Springs/Peregian Breeze, Div 9, the Coast respectively?

In terms of achievements I would like to firstly point out that these outcomes are always a huge team effort combining the skills and talents of many council officers, the community and to varying degrees my role as a councillor.

In Division 9, it has been exciting to advocate and be involved in the larger projects such as upgrades to the Coolum Civic Centre, Coolum Library, sealing kilometres of gravel roads, Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary, Mount Ninderry walking trail and observation deck, environmental land purchases etc. However, the smaller community projects have been just as rewarding

including the Peregian Springs dog offleash park and multipurpose play area, Coolum Hearts clubhouse, Maroochy River Rowing Club upgrade to name a few.

I have also thoroughly enjoyed my portfolio role in many of the major projects such as the solar farm, new airport runway, international broadband submarine cable and the new Maroochydore City Centre.

I have loved the challenge of helping develop, advocate and implement the Regional Economic Development Strategy that is helping drive the region’s new economy.

Q3. Is there anything you wish you could have helped improve more?

Really, the list is too big to put into Peregian Springs News.

Suffice to say I have plenty of projects that I will happily share with the new councillor if they wish.

I would also respectfully encourage the new councillor to continue to lobby the state government to provide another access to Coolum from the Sunshine Coast Motorway as well as widening the motorway, widening of the Bli Bli bridge and assist council in funding a new pathway linking ..

I think the biggest challenge is trying to divide your time effectively to meet the demands of the leadership role of a councillor, the additional portfolio responsibilities, the day to day business of council while getting out and about in the community to ensure they have the opportunity to raise their concerns and ideas.

Q5. Any advice to new candidates for the Division?

My advice would be to listen, learn and embrace the huge variety of responsibilities, systems, processes as it can be a little daunting at first.

The Sunshine Coast Council is a

wonderful organisation that puts the community first despite what you might read or hear and its staff will be there to support you as best it can to help serve and deliver for your community.

Q6. What's next?

All going well I would like to take up a part-time role on the Sunshine Coast and continue to use my expertise to help in whatever capacity I can.

Q7. Are there any other comments you would like to make?

I would like to sincerely thank the Peregian Springs community for providing me the opportunity to serve you over the last 8 years. It has been a privilege to be your councillor and I wish you all the very best for the future.

Painting pays off for Charlie THE next Arthur Boyd may well be amongst us.

Peregian Springs’ student Charlie Derham’s artistic take on the view from his back deck led to him being awarded first prize in the Under 9 category of the Inaugural Local Artists - Local Content Student Award on January 22. He won art supply vouchers for himself and his school.

As for the painting: “This is the view from our house. My painting is of trees and blue sky and some flags to stop people going on the new grass when they buy a new block.

“I chose to paint flags because they are interesting and they are on the blocks of land.”

Alfie adds a Swiss trip to his dance journey AS Peregian Springs News hits the streets for February, 15 year old ballet dancing star Alfie Shacklock will be performing on stage in the prestigious Prix De Lausanne 2020 in Switzerland.

Alfie, who danced at The Dance Centre Peregian Springs, will compete against 84 other dancers from around the world for a range of scholarship and award opportunities, including the chance to win 12 months tuition and board to study at a Prix De Lausanne partner school.

MP takes on Coast netball game WHEN the whistle blows on the 2020 netball season and more than 2000 players take to the courts as part of the Sunshine Coast Netball Association, they’ll do so with Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie on their side.

MEMBER for Ninderry Dan Purdie is the first to admit his ball skills need work, but that didn’t stop him proudly accepting the role of Patron of Sunshine Coast Netball Association in January.

“It’s a real honour to be asked to be patron of the Sunshine Coast Netball Association, who are doing so much to encourage participation in one of our country’s most popular sports,” Mr Purdie said.

“During the peak of the season,

there’s hardly a day that goes by where there’s not a game of netball or training going on,” he said.

“As home to the successful, Suncorp Super Netball winning team Sunshine Coast Lightning, there is no doubt they are also inspiring the next generation of netball superstars on courts across the coast.

SCNA President Tanya Elms said the Association was excited and grateful to have Dan on board as their Patron.

“Dan is an avid fan of our great game and has already shown enormous support for our Association,” Tanya said.

“We look forward to growing our relationship over the coming years.”

Help the environment and local students LOCAL businesses, Burrito Bar and Aveo, have joined with members of the Peregian Springs State School community to support the school’s Containers for Change fundraiser targeted at airconditioning the school’s classrooms. In 2019 more than $7000 16

was raised, enough for 1.5 rooms.

If you’d like to help, containers, without lids, can be dropped off at the Grounds Care office near the outdoor courts at the school between 8.15am and 8.45am on Tuesdays and Fridays each week.

Rec fields ready for new year of fun THE fences are down and the rec fields are now open again, just in time for the next season of touch football.

A council spokeswoman said the Ridges Sports Complex fields are maintained and leased from Sunshine Coast Council by the Coolum Touch Football Association Inc. “The fields were closed on 20 December 2019 through to 27 January 2020 to allow for field refurbishment works which included returfing, repairs, weed control, fertilisation and irrigation system improvements,” she said.

“All works were funded in partnership by the association and council through fundraising efforts and

Local profile—Jacinta Alkin

Aiming for happy healthy Mums TEN years working in the health industry and seeing the effects diseases such as osteoporosis and diabetes can have on women’s health has inspired Peregian local Jacinta Alkin to return to her roots as a fitness trainer and focus her attention on helping women to stay fit, particularly at times when the stage of life can make it hard.

Jacinta a former ballet dancer who started her career in the Fitness industry as a group fitness instructor at an early age before moving on to become a gym instructor and personal trainer, said her clients had always been predominantly female, which had led to her focus on women’s health.

She said it could be hard for women to stay active when they are pregnant and post-natal and this challenge had inspired her to look at these times of life and to begin developing group training programs that incorporated both fitness and social goals as part of her JacFit Personal Training business.

“Women need to know they can trust a fitness trainer who understands the demands of being a wife/partner, mother, employee, businesswoman and housekeeper, all the while trying to balance some much needed time for themselves to look and feel great and to have the energy to get through their days,” Jacinta said.

“The social aspect of women coming together and exercising in groups plays a very important role for women to meet other women in similar positions and that social interaction is critical for wellbeing and mental health 22

Local Profile - Kathryn Chandler

Ready to engage and connect PEREGIAN Springs local Kathryn Chandler, pictured right, has started 2020 with a mission to engage and connect with residents as the newly appointed Community Liaison Officer based at the Ridges Recreation Club.

“I am a proud local in the Peregian Springs community,” Kathryn said.

“I grew up on the Sunshine Coast and after I completed my senior education I moved to Brisbane for five years and then onto Melbourne for two years, however there is no place like home and nothing can compare to the lifestyle that the Sunshine Coast has to offer.

“At the beginning of 2019 I left the city and returned to my roots, settling in Peregian Springs with my partner and our two young children.

“At the beginning of this year, I was appointed the role as the Community Liaison Officer (CLO) at Ridges Recreation Club in Peregian Springs and I am thoroughly enjoying the position.”

As for what’s to come in 2020, Kathryn said it was shaping up to be a very exciting year.

“One of my primary goals for the year is to engage and connect the community more frequently to build an even stronger community spirit.

“I am currently organising fun, activities for the families and individuals that make up our beautiful community.

“Some of the activities that the residents can look forward to this year include a dive-in movie night for the whole family, wine tastings, a Halloween kids’ disco party and many more exciting activities and events to come!

“With environmental issues close to heart, I am also working towards going paperless this year in the CLO office.

Club snares top award

Coolum Tennis Club has won Tennis Queensland’s “Champion of Change” award for driving social inclusion and participation in tennis across all player ages and abilities.

The award was presented during the recent ATP Cup and Brisbane International at the Queensland Tennis Centre.

Head Coach Andrew Ash said the club was thrilled to be acknowledged by tennis peers for achievements in developing new programs and increasing player participation at the club.

“It’s really satisfying to facilitate opportunities and passion in tennis - a game people can play and enjoy for life.

“The club now has 250 players from ages 4 to 84 years active in weekly competitive, social, fitness, wheelchair and community programs, 30

Game Fit is a cardio group hit out whereby mixed abilities can play alongside one another in a positive environment, and the club run 17 sessions of the popular Game Fit each week.

The next major event at the Coolum Tennis Centre is the annual Coolum Classic Wheelchair Tennis tournament in April (the second longest running wheelchair tournament in Australia) and the junior wheelchair tennis camp alongside.

Andrew Ash is the only national wheelchair tennis coach in Queensland and his coaching team are also skilled in this specialist area.

Local member for Ninderry Dan Purdie has recently visited the Coolum

Tennis Centre to meet players, members and coaching staff and is throwing his support behind club plans for infrastructure upgrades to further extend their programming and tournaments.

“Coolum Tennis Club is achieving great things for our community in health and wellbeing but the popularity of the game, place, and coaching programs means the aged courts are under pressure – I’d like to see them get some funding to make improvements,” he said.

The Club has a state government Activate Infrastructure grant pending and a successful outcome will mean the club can continue to meet demand on the centre and expand the program schedule.

The new Peregian Pedagogical Framework is being implemented successfully under the College’s R.I.S.E. (Reflective Practice, Inclusivity, Service of Others & Excellence) values program.

The Peregian Beach College leadership team have been listening to the needs of the community and have implemented new pedagogical practices to define modern learning using modern teaching strategies.

The Peregian Pedagogies encompass the best elements of both traditional (core knowledge in subject areas – Australian Curriculum) and innovative approaches whereby a global perspective and collaboration skills are critical to the teaching and learning process.

Peregian Beach College caters for students with a diverse range of talents, interests, needs and academic abilities through its vigorous and comprehensive academic program, diverse co-curricular activities 32

(Enhanced Learning Opportunities) and strong life skills program.

Southern capital serves up fun

WHEN it comes to Australian states that are relatively small, easy to navigate and offer a range of experiences for the traveller, Victoria is well worth a look.

From the mountain ranges of the Great Dividing range to the northeast of Melbourne, and the rugged coastline to the south east and south west, the state has plenty to offer.

For this Peregian Springs family, a journey south at Christmas time proved an enjoyable break from our normal Sunshine Coast life.

Staying in a hill top cabin at the Big 4 at Healesville, complete with jumping pillow, two smallish pools, an outdoor inflatable park and the chance to hire and drive a four wheel buggy along a fun bush track, proved a hit.

Having beautiful parrots, magpies, ducks and other native birds visit every morning for a birdseed hit just added to the enjoyment of the natural, wi-fi free break for our children.

Located just moments away from Healesville Sanctuary, a visit was always on the card. While we’re spoilt on the Sunshine Coast with Australia Zoo, a laidback wander through the sanctuary’s exhibits and the chance to watch a platypus swimming playfully 34

were worth the entrance fee.

For the Melbournians reading, they’ll know that Christmas in the city means checking out the famous Myer Christmas windows. This year, they were themed around the Gumnut babies. Even though we got there after the big day, the crowds were still pretty thick with onlookers keen to see what the masters of puppeteering had come up with for Christmas 2019.

A wander around the city, over the Yarra River, by Flinders Street Station, along Southbank, through the alleyways, arcades and Chinatown proved both eye opening and delicious. A trip the annual Christmas Spectacular also proved popular.

Between great family catch ups and a solid spot of sightseeing Melbourne 2019 was worth the effort.
