for the club’s revival.

The Councillors voted to approve the lease subject to a number of conditions, including having the lessee: • Publish annual reporting of progress toward establishment of the new Peregian Beach SLSC for the first three years of operations; • Set aside a suitable area for Surf Lifesaving Queensland to oversee Noosa Shire contract lifeguard operations as per the Surf Lifesaving Queensland Sunshine Coast Branch proposal; Continued, page 2

by Council for direct ratepayer financial support • Agreeing that building maintenance will be at Council’s discretion subject to its independent assessment and asset maintenance planning; The motion also noted Peregian Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Inc’s. request to operate the Peregian Beach Markets from May 2022 and authorised the CEO to issue the appropriate permit once Council has received a properly made application and undertaken its normal assessment process.

Councillors agreed to consider as part of the 2022-2023 budget deliberations the allocation of $71,000 per annum plus CPI (for a total of

three years) to fund SLSQ contract lifeguard services on Saturdays and public holidays in the surf lifesaving patrol season (September to May) for the purposes of providing lifesaving service continuity at Peregian Beach and also agreed to consider as part of the 2022-2023 budget deliberations the allocation of $90,000 to re-paint the clubhouse building.

A final element of the motion was to allow the application of the exception to the requirement for tendering of the lease under Section 236 (1) (b) (ii) of the Local Government Regulation 2012 as the lease is to a community organisation.

The previous incarnation of the PBSLSC closed in 2014 with Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club stepping in to assist financially and physically by taking on beach patrols and management of training and support.

The intent was to try and assist in the rebuilding process with a view to bringing

back an independent club if, and when, the community support was there to make it possible.

As of May 2, Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club formally handed responsibility for patrolling Peregian Beach over to the newly incorporated PBSLSC, although it is clear from the PBSLSC’s first AGM that support will still be there from NHSLSC to help the new club meet its patrol requirements and help it to grow over the next three years.

From September 2022, PBSLSC members will provide patrol coverage on Sundays during the season, with the Council funded lifeguards to supporting Saturdays and public holidays.

At the PBSLSC AGM, Sunshine Coast Surf Lifesaving president Gerard O’Brien said the ultimate aim was to have 12 full patrols with 8-10 members covering all the required qualifications.

The lease news has been welcomed by Leigh McCready, pictured above with Peregian Nippers Jake, Luke and Ben, who has been a driving force behind the revival of the surf club. With life saving in her veins, having been a former Director of Noosa Heads Surf Club and a Peregian Nippers coordinator, Leigh has spent the past four years rallying supporters and the life saving community to bring back PBSLSC.

SHARK DRAMA LEADS TO RESCUE

BY FIONA EWINGTON THE EASTER HOLIDAY BREAK SAW THE EASTERN BEACHES’ SURF UNSTABLE AND MESSY.

High tides tore away more sand dunes and lifeguards advised waste deep bathing only, so it was no surprise that when conditions calmed down, those still on holiday ventured into the sea on Easter Tuesday.

What was a surprise was seeing a large shark swimming in the shallows at Sunrise Beach with a large hook through its mouth and attached to a buoy.

Local lifeguards were alerted and raced down from Sunshine Beach advising everyone to leave the water, because despite the shark not moving freely, it was still mobile potentially still hunting for food. Beach goers were fascinated by the creature swimming so close.

But it was at dusk that the drama unfolded for a local couple, Lloyd Landelle 31 and girlfriend Brittany James-Rayner 26 (pictured) who were enjoying an evening stroll, initially unaware of the shark, but who became involved when they assisted beachgoers to alert swimmers to leave the water.

It appeared that not everyone was able to swim to the shore due to the rough conditions. Lloyd spotted a young girl in trouble and despite the hooked shark being close by, swam out to assist her.

“With a buoy attached, I figured I would see it coming” Lloyd said.

Caught in a fierce rip and battling the strong currents, it was through sheer determination that Lloyd was able to bring the exhausted girl to shore. Quick thinking Brittany raised the alarm and, whilst waiting for emergency services, attempted to swim out, but said the wall of water was too strong.

bravely, took to the water and assisted with the rescue using his surfboard.

Lloyd said if it wasn’t for the shark sighting, perhaps he and Brittany would not have been there at the crucial time.

Little is known about what happened to the wounded shark as it had disappeared when the local fisheries department came to investigate. What is known is that it was strong enough to break away from a 25kg anchor.

Our eastern beaches are protected from predators by large drum lines which are seen from the shore and carry baited hooks, designed to prevent wildlife coming too close, and keeping surfers and bathers safe.

Without a fatal attack here in 50 years they are deemed effective. However, many would like to see modern technology which send out signals deterring sharks from coming too close replacing the baited drum lines. This initiative has been successfully rolled out in areas of NSW. Whilst underwater predators are in the forethoughts of bathers, the biggest danger our oceans poses are drownings. It could be said that it is not sharks that pose a significant danger in our oceans it is ourselves. easternbeachesnews.com.au

RECORD ANZAC DAY TURNOUT COOLUM-PEREGIAN RSL SUB BRANCH HAS HAILED ANZAC DAY 2022 AS HAVING ATTRACTED THE BIGGEST CROWD EVER AT THE SERVICE.

With COVID restrictions lifted for the first time in years residents and veterans alike were able to come out, free of masks and check in requirements, to pay their respects to those who served at Gallipoli.

Despite some rain, a crowd of nearly 3000 people all but filled the grassed area of the RSL, with members of the Army’s Bushmaster squad on hand, along with a vehicle, adding to the atmosphere of the event.

Veterans and their families gathered early to march toward the Cenotaph at the RSL where messages of reflection, gratitude and support were shared.

Christian College, Peregian Beach College, Peregian Springs State School and St Andrews Anglican College were represented by their students, with performances by local choirs too.

NEW PLAYGROUND WELCOMED Well, it’s been worth the wait. The brandnew Hinterland Adventure Playground has opened at Cooroy! The nature-based, all abilities playground has a variety of play zones to suit all energy levels and is already being well used and loved by so many in our community.

ECONOMIC STRATEGY UPDATE

Input from business groups, local operators and industry leaders has been key to developing Council’s new Economic Development Strategy 2021-2030.

It aims to deliver a dynamic, resilient economy for future generations. The strategy builds on Council’s ongoing commitment to diversity and grow employment and economic opportunities. It has a real focus on achieving growth in the smart industry sectors.

The new strategy reflects the very different world to when the last strategy was adopted in 2016. This new strategy includes the rapidly changing technology industry, a highly mobile workforce, unpredictable nature of Covid-19 and the emerging challenges of talent, workforce and accommodation availability. The 10-year plan connects the strong environmental values of our community to future- focused, technology and data-driven actions to find creative and resourceful solutions to economic and environmental challenges.

LIVEABILITY SURVEY FEEDBACK

We continue to garner feedback from our community. The results of our first ever Liveability Survey are in. Thanks to the 1600 plus people who shared what they care about most in their neighbourhoods and gave a rating of their experience. Noosa Shire neighbourhoods are performing well where it matters most - meeting community members’ values regarding the local 12

economy and environment sustainability.

A sense of community and the natural environment rank highly as strengths of Noosa Shire. The general condition of public open spaces and walking/cycling paths are also highly valued by the community. The data we have derived will help Council prioritise future investment and works, as well as current budget deliberations.

FREE BUSES STILL ON WEEKENDS

Weekend travel is free on all existing Translink services operating within Noosa.

The weekend free bus trial includes existing Translink services 626, 627, 628, 629 and 632 covering Tewantin, Sunshine Beach, Sunrise Beach, Noosa Heads, Parklands, Noosa Junction, Noosaville, Cooran, Cooroy and Pomona. Routes 620, 630 and 631 travel outside of the Noosa Shire Council area and are not included in the free service. The aim is to help more people trying to get in to busy locations like Hastings Street, especially on weekends and during the upcoming Noosa Parade upgrade.

APRIL, A MONTH TO REMEMBER April marked a month of celebration, commemorations for ANZAC Day and much appreciated family time for so many due to COVID-19 relaxations and several public holidays!

MOBILITY MAT SUCCESS

A very special occasion was the delayed official launch of the life-changing Mobi-Mat on Noosa Main Beach! This mat stretches from the Surf Life Saving Club to near the water’s edge, ensuring that everyone can now enjoy what so many take for granted.

Since being first contacted by Libby Doherty in 2020 it’s been a long journey to get here, and I thank all co-collaborators including Noosa Council and Cr Amelia Lorentson, Noosa SLSC, Tewantin Noosa Lions Club, Seahorse Nippers, and the Mawby’s. Making a difference has never been more beautiful!

MAJOR SEEDS FOR CHANGE

As part of our ongoing efforts to create more of these collaborations, we are encouraging non-for-profit organisations to submit Expressions of Interest to our $10,000 Major Seeds for Change Program, to kick start an innovative project that will benefit the entire community by addressing an unacknowledged or ongoing issue in our electorate. PONTOONS GONE, DEBRIS REMAINS

The pontoons that washed up on our shores during the floods have now been removed.

However, as much of the debris is buried within the sand it is an ongoing effort to remove polystyrene as tides uncover more.

Thank you to all who continue to care for our beaches and environment, and we ask everyone to please keep an eye out for any 14

poly-remnants that you can dispose of when at the beach.

FLIGHT PATH REVIEW

AirServices Australia’s Post Implementation Review of Sunshine Coast Airport is still ongoing, with alternative flight paths submitted by community members for consideration. A draft report is expected in approximately May 2022.

STRUM TO YOUR HAPPY PLACE

By FIONA EWINGTON For those keen to put a bit of Hawaiian jazz in their Noosa step look no further than the Noosa Marina on Wednesday mornings when it is transformed into a musical hub when the Parkbench Ukulele Players get together for a coffee, a sing song and a ukulele strum.

Led by Terry Nolan, affectionally known as the Grand Poobah, The Parkbench Ukulele Players are a group of 80 regulars (over 350 members) who come from all over our region to gather at 10.30am on Wednesdays to play their ukulele and enjoy a singalong.

Each person brings their own instrument and ipad, containing their digital songbook of lyrics and chords. They perform together bringing a tropical and musical energy to the Marina.

With an accordion for extra pizzazz and ukulele bass keeping the rhythm, while competing for airtime with the Noosa Ferry’s familiar horn - witnessing the ukulele players is a wonderful uplifting experience.

The group was created eight years ago, when Terry Nolan and wife Lin started learning Indonesian and were advised to take up the ukulele as it is easier to learn a language through song.

Initially rehearsing in the Tewantin RSL Park, using the park bench, (hence their name) the group attracted a strong following.

They moved to the Noosa Marina as it offered a better, all-weather, venue, and now the Harbour Wine Bar welcomes the weekly musical group.

The ukulele is (generally) a four stringed instrument, resembling a small guitar and is of Portuguese origin, yet popularised in Hawaii.

It is a relatively easy instrument to learn and is a great option as a first instrument.

Anyone can join the Parkbench Ukulele 16

players and by signing up members are provided with a digital songbook with over 300 songs.

It is an enormously fun way to spend a Wednesday morning. Either watching or playing it’s a great atmosphere, taken seriously by some, while others enjoy the challenge of keeping up.

To bring a bit of entertainment and “Ooh La la” to the Runaway Noosa event on May 28, the Parkbench Ukulele players will be situated at Cloudsley Street, entertaining and encouraging the competitors to run, while the musicians strum!

Welcome to everyone, the Parkbench Ukulele players encourage anyone to come and meet new friends, learn a new skill and enjoy their common aim of laughter, fun and friendship.
