Let the dance begin The Christmas trees are up, the Christmas lights are starting to appear on the local houses and school’s about to finish for thousands of local kids.

For many, that means summer holidays are on the way.

For four young Peregian dancers it means a chance to shine in the big smoke as members of the cast of the Christmas in Storyland pantomime in Brisbane - a Christmas tradition making a comeback to the big stage at South Bank after a 20-year break.

Studio 4 Dance owner Karla Costanzo, who performed in the pantomime herself in the 80s and 90s, said the four girls, her daughter Ivy, and her friends Chloe M, Ayla D and Gemma J were in for a fun time. “Performing in Christmas in Storyland was such a highlight of my childhood and I’m so thrilled my daughter and her friends will have the same wonderful experience I did,” she said.

From the Ed’s desk: I’m not sure about anyone else but for me tipping into December feels like a race towards the finishing line on what has been a very long, strange, and different kind of year.

Usually at this time of year I’d be hunting for carols events to share with readers, Christmas parades and concerts.

For the most part, COVID restrictions appear to have put an end to that this year. Things may change though, so keep an eye on our Facebook page @EasternBeachesNews or our website at www.yourcommunitymedia.com.au and if I spot any events that have been brought back to life, I promise to share them there as quickly as I’m able.

It has been great to hear from people who have found the magazine over the past few months and have some great ideas about how we can make it work for

the community. Keep the ideas coming.

Ultimately our aim is to provide a regular monthly dose of interesting, topical and factual news that helps residents to know what’s on offer in their neighbourhoods and shares the great work being done every day by people who live here and have a passion for making it as good as it can be.

It’s been heartening this month to see new businesses investing in the local area and showing confidence in the years ahead. Congratulations to those business owners for taking the risk and having a go. Christmas tails wagging The dogs were walking, talking and taking a bath on November 29 when Peregian Markets held its Christmas Pooch Parade.

There were big dogs, little dogs, elf-like dogs, sausage dogs and clever dogs who turned out to try their luck in the fluffy fashion stakes.

The Parade was sponsored by Peregian Springs Vets, Noosa Dog Cakes and Jonny Bandannas, with first prize of a $50 Noosa Dog Cakes voucher going to the elf-like Jack Russell.

Peregian Markets are back with to their normal routine, open from 7am to 12.30pm on market days on the first and third Sunday of each month, and the fifth Sunday too in December or January.

Market coordinator Lea Bye said the markets were rebuilding momentum lost during the COVID shutdowns and stallholders were looking forward to the Christmas trade.

With the Christmas rush upon us Peregian Beach Post Office will be open extra hours until December 23 to give everyone the best chance possible of getting their cards and presents sent on time. The post office, which is on the surf club side of the central square at Peregian Beach, will be open from 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am to Noon on Saturday until December 23.

Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart has launched the Mayor’s Christmas Appeal to help four local charities reach those doing it tough this Christmas. The appeal calls for gift cards and other donations to go to Salvation Army Noosa, St Vincent De Paul Noosa, Santa’s Classy Helpers and Youturn Youth Support. Donations can be dropped directly at any of the chosen charities, or a number of drop off points, the closest of which for Eastern Beaches News readers is at Peregian Beach Community House, 255 David Low Way from 9am to 2pm, Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays until December 18.

INDY THEATRE FESTIVAL

The winning show of the Spirit of Fringe Award at the Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2019 is on the playlist for a four day original theatre festival in Nambour this month. Yay for Cane Toads! Noosa Mayor’s column with Clare Stewart It’s hard to believe that Christmas is almost here. We’ve all had a tough year, with the mantra #weareallinthistogether never more pertinent, CHRISTMAS CONVOY We’ve launched the Connecting Noosa Christmas Convoy in an effort to spread some Christmas cheer through the community. The convoy will also help recognise the efforts of our emergency services during Covid and the bushfires last year who will feature in the convoy along with of course, Santa. It starts in Boreen Point and Cooroibah on Monday night, 7 December and moves to Kin Kin, Pomona and Cooroy on Tuesday. It then travels through parts of Tewantin on Wednesday 9 December, followed by the beachside suburbs of Peregian, Castaways and Sunrise Beach on Thursday afternoon, 10 December. As many of our regular community events can’t go ahead due to the pandemic restrictions, this will ensure everyone gets to enjoy the Christmas Spirit with neighbours and family.

MAYOR’S CHRISTMAS APPEAL Speaking of Christmas, I am delighted to launch our first ever Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. The appeal is a way to lend a helping hand to not-forprofits and local charities. Our local charities do a tremendous job but after such a challenging year, any support is greatly appreciated. We are calling for donations of gift cards or gift vouchers to local attractions. I’m kicking off the appeal with $500 worth of gift cards and I’d be so pleased if you would join me in supporting this appeal in any way that you can however big or small. Council’s annual report is now live on our website. It’s an interesting snapshot of the past year.

Despite Covid-19 restrictions, staff answered more than 88,000 enquiries, we emptied more than 1.5 million bins, libraries loaned more than 349,000 books and other items, finding new ways to serve our community even with the doors having to be closed.

Other highlights and one which I am incredibly proud of is that fact that we’ve almost doubled our budget on fire trail building and maintenance in Council bush reserves and we have increased our budget by 71% for controlled burns on Council land.

We’ve distributed over $1.3 million in grants to the community and environmental groups, plus art and other projects during the 19/20 year.

MERRY CHRISTMAS All in all, it’s been a big year but as the Christmas season is well and truly upon us, we have much to celebrate, reflect on and be thankful for.

We hope to see as many of you as possible over the coming weeks on our Christmas Convoy and on behalf of all Councillors and Council staff I wish you and your loved ones a peaceful, joyful, safe and merry Christmas.

New Business Profile - Change Exchange

Containers for cash at Coolum There’s a new way to cash in your cans and bottles for coins and its coming to Coolum from December 7.

Change Exchange co-owner Tim Riches said his business used technology to allow customers the opportunity of having their bottles counted automatically and payments made in cash on the spot.

Tim said this was their second Change Exchange operation on the Coast, with the other at Beerwah having been open for some months and proving popular with locals there.

“It’s a great opportunity for individuals, but also schools and

charities to be able to turn their fundraising efforts into cash in a timely manner,” Mr Riches said.

The containers refund point at 53 Lysaght St, Coolum, is part of the Containers for Change scheme (www.containersforchange.com.au or phone 13 42 42) which allows for the recycling of eligible containers for a 10 cent refund per container.

Wide Bay update: Federal Member Llew O’Brien

Hoping for a happy, healthy, 2021 I would like to extend my best wishes to everyone in the Eastern Beaches for a safe and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

This year has been a difficult one for everyone as a result of the pandemic, and while Australia has risen to the challenges of tackling COVID-19 better than most countries, we must acknowledge our nation’s recovery will be a slow and sometimes painful process.

I am thankful to everyone in the Noosa region who showed common sense and decency in helping stop the spread of COVID-19, and particularly our medical professionals and aged care workers who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to keep us and our vulnerable elderly safe.

As we move into 2021, there are many reasons we can be optimistic about a brighter year ahead.

Camera trial begins at Peregian Digital Hub Peregian Beach has another layer of protection against bushfires with the installation of a test fire detection camera at the Digital Hub by local business Fireball.International.

Business launch - Activate Body

Body revolution at Sunshine There’s a new kid on the block at Sunshine Beach and its good news for local sports people and anyone just looking to get more out of their body.

Launched in October at Duke St, Sunshine Beach, Activate Body offers a combination of health services including physiotherapy, led by Dr Viktoria Molloy, podiatry, and performance coaching with Tom Molloy.

Tom said the combination of services offered clients the opportunity to have treatment for injuries with Viktoria, and for him to then be able to assist immediately in the coordination of the exercise program for recovery.

On the physiotherapy side, Viktoria’s expertise is in low back pain, neck pain and headaches, osteoarthritis, acute and sport injuries, chronic pain, exercise based rehab and evidence based treatment.

Tom is a proponent of S.M.A.R.T. Functional Strength programs, designed to build core control, tone the body, reduce weight, and increase ease of movement.

He came to be involved in the study of movement and strength after finding himself almost immobile with arithitis about eight years ago and beginning a journey of learning as he hunted for ways to ease his pain and return his movement. On the launch night, he’d just returned from a 45km hike with friends and his passion for helping others to achieve the best they can from their body was infectious.

Rainbow Park’s green warriors

By Fiona Ewington Nothing binds a community more than working on a project together.

At Sunrise Beach, local resident Ben Alexander (pictured right) has led other locals on a mission to restore and regenerate Rainbow Park and Burgess Creek from a weed-infested space to a nutrient-rich clearing.

Ben’s interest started when he moved to the area 6 years ago. Living behind Rainbow Park he couldn’t help noticing the unusual Glossy Black Cockatoos feeding in the trees.

Bird watchers from near and far would come to see these fussy birds feeding in the Casuari trees. He learnt these trees have a life span of 20 years, so for the endangered species to continue feeding here, more trees needed to be planted.

Starting with friends and family helping to pull up weeds and clear dense areas, they were able to create and improve the habitat for native flora and fauna.

Then, Noosa Council came on board providing tools and gloves, and taking away the debris. Ben now has over 50 volunteers assisting with the project.

As a result of working parties and donations from stakeholders, 500 new trees have recently been planted with 500 more in the pipeline turning the small park into a Glossy Black Cockatoo sanctuary.

Progressing further into Rainbow Park, where natural water flows and the “Glossies” come to drink Ben found this area also needed attention.

With the introduction of treated effluent in the water bringing rich nutrients it has become shrouded in 16

Singapore Daisy weed which is threatening native trees.

“It would break my heart to see these trees die,” explains Jo, one of Ben’s local working bee volunteers.

“We are so grateful to Ben for bringing his knowledge, expertise and leadership so we can help restore the landscape to its natural beauty.”

Holding working bees for a few hours at a time on a regular basis has saved much time and money and brought a wonderful sense of community.

Volunteers have a great time, and everyone is encouraged to come and be part of the fun. Whether they are weeding, planting or bringing the crew icy poles, every little bit helps.

“It is very satisfying bringing natural balance to the ground, chatting to new people and catching up on Netflix recommendations,” chuckles Jo. “Our project has really come together,” explains Ben - and happily it has also taken his mind away from his career in the travel industry which due to COVID has come to an unfortunate standstill.

Dream brings new beer to life

By Fiona Ewington As schools say farewell to another year and leavers embark on their new lives, Sunshine Beach local Brandt Bamford, an inaugural Sunshine Beach State High School student, advises schoolies to “Dream Big and Work Hard.”

Celebrating the first anniversary of his big dream of setting up his own beer distillery, Terella Brewery owner Brandt and his business partner Torren Read, of Peregian Beach, (pictured) raised a glass of their own crafted ale recently to congratulate themselves on surviving a tough start to their hospitality business.

With hard work, dedication and passion their dreams have created more than just a boutique brewery.

Situated on 69 acres, 20 minutes from Noosa, North Arm’s Terella Brewery and taproom is a place of entertainment for all the family.

With its own petting zoo, basketball court, open fields and dirt track, families are encouraged to bring their kids with bikes, balls and skateboards for outdoor activities in a safe environment, while parents enjoy some grown up time.

To complement the array of regular new beers, there are food trucks and live music every weekend creating a magical mini outdoor festival.

“It wasn’t an overnight success” explains Brandt. “Growing up in Sunshine Beach my beer-making passion began when my mate’s Dad allowed us to open his home brew kit.

“I loved the science behind the distilling process and experimenting with different formulas.”

“Friends and families loved our concoctions and dreams of selling beer began but were restricted, because selling homebrew is illegal.”

With dreams of beer-making on hold Brandt headed to WA to seek his fortune as an electrician in the mines.

However, when his young children came along the gruelling rosters meant a challenging life balance, so he returned to the Sunshine Coast.

Living a comfortable life with a daytime job, Brandt became restless and dreams of making beer came to a head. With blessings from his wife Shannon, they sold their hinterland home, bought some land and the family lived in the shed while investing all their savings in brewing equipment.

It was by chance Brandt met Ashley Thomson who was farming indoor leafy greens and trying to find a sustainable outlet for the excess water this farming produced. The water is now used in the Terella Brewing beer.

Because of the beautiful surroundings, Terella Brewery not only produces sustainable beer, it is a wonderful destination for family friendly fun.

Sunnier Days with Ali Palmer Tiny is terrific is my new mantra!

This month I want to share the power of taking tiny steps towards the things we want to get done.

We’ve probably all felt the thrill of ticking something off our To Do List, completing a task or finishing a project. It feels good to accomplish something, big or small. This is a key driver for us humans.

When we make progress towards our goals it activates the brain’s reward system releasing a ‘feel good’ chemical called dopamine. This makes us feel pleased with ourselves.

This sense of achievement or the feeling of pride acts as an additional motivator. More often than not, once we get started, we want to keep going.

The power of tiny steps Sometimes we can have the best intentions to do something but for many reasons just can’t make it happen. It often feels too big or too hard. Or we’re too tired or too busy.

By breaking it down into very small easy to do steps, it suddenly doesn’t seem so overwhelming. Our brains love EASY and when the task is presented in this way we are more likely to respond with a CAN-DO attitude.

Even super tiny Ever since I read Tiny Habits by B.J. Fogg, I’ve been playfully experimenting with this idea.

By the way, he has a great TED Talk too. I recently used it as the foundation for my ‘56 days to fit and fabulous’ campaign.

And I started tiny, super tiny! I began by choosing just 3 simple exercises: push-ups, squats and sit-ups. At 20

regular intervals throughout the day, I’d complete just 5 repetitions of each. It was too easy not to do!

Since then I have gradually increased the repetitions. Within just a few weeks I can feel my body getting stronger.

Try this …

Pick a chore, task, project or goal and begin by creating a list of tiny steps, remembering that these should be quick and easy to do.

Aim to complete one step at a time.

Upon completion, take a moment to celebrate in some small way.

This could be a tick or a smiley face or a yeyyy me!

This celebratory step is important … it creates a positive feedback loop in your brain and increases the chances that you will want to repeat this behaviour.

I’ll talk more about this in future articles.
