PROPERTY ON A HIGH MEDIAN HOUSE PRICES HAVE RISEN BETWEEN 20 AND 30 PERCENT ALONG THE EASTERN BEACHES STRIP IN THE 12 MONTHS FROM JUNE 2020 TO JUNE 2021.

Recent data released by CoreLogic shows the median house price for Sunshine Beach hit $2,063,460 at June 30, 2021 - up 24.6% on the same time last year.

At Sunrise Beach, the median house price is now $1,374,000, up 24.2%, while Peregian Beach is Eastern Beaches News - August 2021

sitting at $1,353,839 for a median house price. This represents a rise of 26.1% in the 12 months to June 30, 2021.

The biggest jump in the 12 months goes to Marcus Beach, where the median house price has gone up 31.1% to be sitting at $1,487,117. Nearby Castaways Beach has a median house price of $1,775,065 - up 30.4%.

CoreLogic Research Principal Eliza Owen said the price hikes were like nothing she’d seen before.

FROM THE ED’S DESK LOCKDOWN! AGAIN!

What a ride this month has been. As we went to hit print on the August edition, COVID-19 hit stop on just about everything and we have instead stayed close to home and started debating just what is, and what is not, “essential”.

While I would love to believe our little magazine is essential reading for locals keen for a little bit of information, I stand to be guided by the Health Department as to whether the printers that print us and the distributors who bring it to your doors each month are to be allowed to work or not.

These publications are a team effort and I hope things come good quickly for all involved so our small businesses can continue to provide the services we aim to provide to

the communities we serve.

Similarly, the small businesses that support us at Eastern Beaches News have been forced to juggle shutdown rules, cancel events, and tweak the way they go about their every day work of providing us locals with great services and opportunities. When I do venture out for any essential purchases, particularly food or medicine, I’ll be doing my best to support the locals still able to open within 10km from home and I’d encourage everyone to do the same where possible.

Locals supporting locals is the way we got through the last shutdown, and here’s hoping it will get us through the lockdowns to come.

From environmental art, to a new children’s book from a local author and a look at an iconic local destination, there’s plenty to read this month.

LOCAL PROPERTY PRICES RISING From page 1

The demand for property on the Coast is extremely high right now, driven by a number of factors, Ms Owen said.

A key driver of the price rises, she said, was the drop in stock on the market.

In June 2020 - there were 51 properties on the market in Sunshine Beach. In June 2021, that figure was 33.

Similarly, in Peregian Beach there were 49 dwellings advertised in June 2020, versus 21 in June 2021.

Another key factor was net migration to and from the Coast with an extra 1600 people arriving here in May 2021 when compared to May 2020 - and a drop of 6% in the number of people moving away from the Coast to take up opportunities elsewhere.

Low interest rates were another factor helping prices to reach new levels, as were changes in the way people work.

Ms Owen said the COVID-19 shutdowns and the move to working at home had proven that a lot of jobs, particularly in the more highly paid professions such as consulting, could be done quite comfortably from home.

She said for many this change had been the inspiration for a move towards lifestyle destinations where they could continue to work in their existing jobs, with the added benefit of being close to the beach and away from city traffic and congestion.

The price hikes are also being experienced further along the Coast with a record sale reported this month inland at Peregian Springs of $2.2 million for a five bedroom house on the golf course.

FLYING FOXES FUNDING TOP UP FUNDING IS SET TO FLOW TO FUND FLYING FOX ROOST MANAGEMENT IN THE NOOSA AREA HELPING TO PRESERVE THEIR ROLE IN THE ENVIRONMENT WHILE REDUCING THEIR IMPACT ON HUMAN NEIGHBOURS.

Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said as part of the State government’s $2 million election commitment to assist local governments with flying foxes, 12 councils would share in $572,000 to carry out immediate high-priority roost management works and develop long-term management plans for the flying furry fruit eaters.

According to the Government, it’s the first disbursement of funding from the FlyingFox Roost Management in Queensland grants, is being rolled out as part of the State Government’s COVID-19 economic recovery plan.

“Flying-foxes are a critical part of

Queensland’s ecosystem, but recently we’ve seen flying-foxes increasingly roost in urban areas causing concerns around noise and odour,” Minister Scanlon said.

“We spoke with local councils and Queenslanders last year to create with a program that’ll help communities lessen the impacts of flying-foxes while also making sure they can continue to play their important ecological role.”

The Department of Environment and Science would work closely with the Local Government Association of Queensland in administering the grants program, to ensure funds are targeted to areas of greatest need and maximum long-term benefits.

Minister Scanlon said the Noosa Shire Council was one of the successful applicants for Round 1 of the grants program receiving $24,000 to develop roost management plans for roost sites at Kin Kin and Wallace Park, Noosaville..

BEACH SCRAPS TO BOARD ART TAKING RUBBISH PICKED UP FROM BEACH WALKS ON PEREGIAN BEACH AND TURNING IT INTO ART WAS NOT PART OF THE PLAN WHEN ARTURO HERNANDEZ AND HIS TWO-YEAROLD SON, NAOLIN, FIRST STARTING COLLECTING THE DEBRIS SIMPLY TO DO TO THEIR BIT FOR THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT.

As the volume of rubbish continued to build Arturo said he started to wonder if there was a way to use the rubbish to create a message about just how much of it was out there and what it was doing to the beaches and oceans of the world.

A regular with the Peregian Beach bushcare group, Arturo asked around among his colleagues and was put in touch with fellow bushcare volunteer and local artist Vicky Bradbury. With the ocean in mind, the duo

came up with the idea of a surfboard featuring the rubbish and “Beach Artifacts from an Anthropocene Age” was born.

As for what’s next for the board, Vicki suggested it might find a place at the new Community House when it is built.

SURF CLUB TO INCORPORATE LIFESAVING AT PEREGIAN BEACH HAS BEEN COORDINATED THROUGH THE GENEROSITY OF THE NOOSA HEADS SURF LIFESAVING CLUB FOR SEVERAL SEASONS WHICH WILL CONTINUE FOR THE 2021/22 SEASON.

Now it is proposed to have a new club formed to be the Peregian Beach Surf Lifesaving Club to have the sole responsibility for lifesaving services at the beach from the start of next season in 2022/23.

President-elect John Roderick, a past President of the Coolum Beach Lifesaving Club, has been appointed by the Sunshine Coast Lifesaving Branch to oversee the start up of the new club.

John said the new governance will involve the lifesaving club becoming an incorporated association together with a second incorporated association for fundraising

Planning is underway for this formal process to commence and be finalised in the next two months.

John said that there will be many opportunities for community members to be involved.

NOOSA COUNCIL NEWS WITH MAYOR CLARE STEWART

MIXED NEWS FOR SOUTH EAST GREAT NEWS ON OLYMPICS

Well, what a few weeks it’s been for South East Qld with the announcement that we will be hosting the 2032 Olympic Games.

The 2032 Games not only represent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for South East Qld they will enable the delivery of a huge amount of infrastructure to our region.

The vision of the Olympics in Qld was first flagged at the 2015 Council of Mayors when 11 regional mayors and the Brisbane Lord Mayor came together with a united vision.

Noosa wasn’t and hasn’t been a part of the SE Qld Council of Mayors since that time but with the Olympics ahead of us and with much to advocate for on behalf of our Shire it may be time to revisit our position.

To be involved, to advocate and speak up for our Shire we must have a voice at the table. This is an opportunity that should and cannot be missed.

NEW EXERCISE STRATEGY

Our walking and cycling strategy was adopted two weeks ago and with this strategy in place we endeavour to create an environment that makes riding and walking convenient, safe and the preferred method of travelling around our beautiful Shire.

Council’s 21/22 capital works plan includes $12.8 million for a range of priority projects over the next two financial years.

These include the installation of pathways as part of major projects such as the Noosa Parade Corridor Upgrade, Garth Prowd Bridge replacement and Beckmans Road Bypass Stage 1.

The adoption of this strategy is a significant milestone in our commitment to address future congestion issues, reduce emissions and increase the uptake of active travel.

BOARDWALK COMPLETE

on the Peregian Beach foreshore boardwalk. The new 40 metre wheelchair friendly boardwalk reconnects Beach Access 57 to Beach Access 58.

It also includes a new beach shower facility which will cater for the high demand at this location.

Similarly, the access track has been improved to assist surf lifesavers.

FUNDING BOOST FOR REGION

Finally, to end on a high note, Council is delighted to receive $4 million from the 2021-24 South East Qld Community Stimulus Package toward brand-new infrastructure, maintenance and upgrades to existing community assets.

Highlights include funding to freshen up our museum, some of our community centres, upgrading our skate park, the renewal of furniture along Gympie Terrace and funds to freshen up park shelters and replace a range of BBQs around the Shire.

More than half a million dollars of this money will be used to build a number of ‘missing links’ in our pathway network as identified in our Walking and Cycling Strategy.

PUSH FOR INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS TO HELP US GROW

With COVID restrictions still impacting the Australian economy, particularly in tourismreliant areas like Noosa, infrastructure projects are more important than ever to generate new jobs and projects that will help build on our economic recovery.

In the 2020–21 Budget, the Australian Government announced a $1 billion extension of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCI) Program, which provides funding for local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects – supporting local jobs to help communities bounce back from the pandemic.

As announced by Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce on a visit to Noosa on July 29, the Noosa Council will receive funding through the LRCI Program for the resurfacing of Langura Street and the Cooyar Street - Langura Street roundabout at Noosa Heads, which has created jobs and will make the road safer.

BOWLS CLUB BONUS

I’m also pleased that the Coalition Government has committed $10,000 to the Tewantin Noosa Bowls Club’s refurbishment, including installing decorative screens, replacing carpet and new pendant lighting.

This investment will help provide a vibrant modern facility for the community and visitors to our region.

BUSHFIRE SUPPORT

And while COVID-19 has stolen the headlines, we also acknowledge that many communities including Noosa are

still feeling the effects of 2019/20 bushfires, and I encourage local organisations to apply for a grant of between $20,000 and $10 million through the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery (BSBR) program.

Whether you have a cultural recovery project in mind; a plan to revitalise tourism and industry; or a proposal to improve health and well-being in the community, I know there will be many great ideas out there – see grant guidelines at recovery.gov. au/black-summer-grants.

A WANDER BACK IN FILM HISTORY

By Fiona Ewington SATURDAY MORNINGS AT POMONA’S MAJESTIC THEATRE, ESTABLISHED IN 1921, IS LIKE STEPPING BACK IN TIME AS THE WEEKLY MIDDAY MATINEE FEATURING A 1920’S SILENT FILM IS BEAMED OUT TO A CHARMED AUDIENCE, ACCOMPANIED BY AN 84-YEAR-OLD COMPTON ORGAN, PLAYED BY RON WEST WHO AT 88, PERFORMS WITH HIS UNIQUE PIZAZZ AND PASSION.

With cabaret style table settings, ushers in red sequined hats and waist coats, the excitement of what is in store is magnified when the first sound of organ pipes bursts through its chambers while audiences collect their drinks from the bar and find their seat.

Waiting for the film to begin it is hard not to feel the history of the place soar through your soul as one hundred years of music, dance and dialogue have entertained audiences within the walls.

Before “Talkies” silent films told stories without narrative, through pictures, actions, and live music. Actors overplayed their expressions whilst the live organist kept one eye on the picture, ensuring their music matched the suspense or comedy moment of the film. This requires great skill as the organ pipes take time to fill, meaning a fraction of a second can make all the difference to the mood and tempo of the film.

To witness such skill is an honor as Ron West who has been accompanying silent movies for over 60 years also shares with us his story of the Majestic Theatre through the decades.

Surviving local bushfires and floods, not to mention the turning wheel of history, the Majestic Theatre has survived the test of time.

Before each performance Ron shares with us his involvement in the theatre, from having to purchase the place, to establishing it as a 16

successful 1950’s cinema where it played new releases, matched with those larger cinemas in Brisbane.

The Majestic Theatre was a resounding success until the age of television. As people chose to stay at home for entertainment, the establishment had to come up with new ideas of how to keep the audiences through the doors.

From 1921 to 2021 ways in which we are entertained through screens has changed significantly.

As friends and families enjoying each other’s company now choose their own entertainment from personal devices, it is wonderful to be reminded that the theatre was the only place to see performances and with the introduction of silent movies, the picture theatre was a special place.

In its one hundredth year The Majestic Theatre has much to compete with. However, audiences are keen to celebrate its centenary and with an array of acts booked and dancing round COVID restrictions volunteers are working tirelessly to bring one hundred years of celebrations to Noosashires oldest hinterland town.

From 1920’s silent movies to daring 2020’s drag shows, The Majestic Theatre is a one off and those of us in the Eastern Beaches region are very lucky to be able to enjoy another magnificent wonder.
