SALTY SATURDAYS A GO! IT WAS A LONG TIME COMING FOR THE ORGANISERS OF COOLUM’S NEWEST EVENT, BUT THE SKIES FINALLY CLEARED FOR LONG ENOUGH ON JANUARY 22 FOR THE CROWDS TO COME OUT AND ENJOY LIVE MUSIC, MARKET STALLS AND FOOD VANS ON THE GREEN OUTSIDE THE LIBRARY.

The launch of the Saturday afternoon markets at Jack Morgan Park realised a long-held dream of Coolum Business & Tourism and Visit Coolum to help bring people back to the area regularly on the weekend.

CB&T president Mark Cameron said it was exciting to see such a positive turn out on day one.

“This is a regular, ongoing event that local businesses, community members, groups and organisations can come together to be a part of, create connections and network,” Mark said.

State Member for Ninderry Dan Purdie said the event was sure to help in promoting Coolum to the Brisbane drive market and in providing an opportunity for local entertainers and micro businesses to showcase their talents regularly.

Salty Saturdays will be held from 2.30pm to 8.30pm on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month.

Another local group proving they have big hearts, and a cheeky nature, are the members of Coolum Theatre Players latest show

Calendar Girls. The play, which is famous for it’s portrayal of a group of middle-aged women who decide to create a racy calendar to sell as a fundraiser for a hospital in need, has inspired the cast to do just that as part of their show in Coolum. Funds raised from CTP calendars, sold at the show, will go towards new comfy couches at Katie Rose Cottage.

For anyone interested in being part of the planning for the 2032 Olympics and how the Sunshine Coast could play its part, Sunshine Coast Council is calling for residents to join the Sunshine Coast Legacy Planning Community Reference Group. The group will be charged with capturing the ideas, hopes and aspirations from a variety of backgrounds, industries and sectors of the Sunshine Coast and reporting back to Council. GARDEN READY FOR EVERYONE THE COOLUM COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT AT JACK MORGAN PARK IS TAKING SHAPE WITH ITS NEW BEDS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO BE ACCESSIBLE FOR EVERYONE, INCLUDING ANYONE IN A WHEELCHAIR.

Swallowtail Nursery owner Nathan Freney (pictured), of Coolum, worked with the Coolum Community Garden and Coolum Men’s Shed to ensure the beds would work for everyone as part of his personal mission to create opportunities for people living with a disability to get out in the garden.

Nathan, who lives with Asperger’s syndrome, said the project was a great opportunity to help people like himself, who are living with a

disability, to get out there and get hands-on experience in the garden.

With qualifications in horticulture, landcare and re-vegetation, Nathan said he was passionate about helping others to gain experience, and potentially work, through horticulture and regularly runs workshops, in four week blocks, that provide training and an immersive experience.

CHANCE TO WIN ON RATES

Sunshine Coast Council has put up a prize of up to $1000 to encourage residents to log on and opt in for email delivery of their next rate notice.

The competition, which coincides with the release of the latest notices on January 24, is open until February 23. To enter, residents need to register for MyCouncil or log in to their existing account and change their notice rate delivery method to email.

“If you do this before Wednesday, February 23, you’ll automatically go in the running to receive up to $1000 off your next rate bill.

If you already receive your rate notices by email, you’re already in the draw,” said Councillor Ted Hungerford, who is in charge of the Outstanding Organisation portfolio.

JOBS IN ZONE RV EXPANSION

A 3D printer measuring 22 metres by 5 metres wide is to be the centrepiece of a massive

expansion by Coolum-based RV manufacturer Zone RV. The off-road caravan specialist has operated out of a 6000sqm space in Coolum Industrial Park for the past two years and is about to invest a further $7.5million in an additional 5000sqm facility in Coolum Eco Industrial Park to keep up with demand.

Zone RV chief executive officer Adrian Tofts said they were hiring now and looking for apprentices, graduates, compositive technicians and tradespeople interested in automation, robotics and mechatronics.

BARNS LANE UPDATE

Updated development plans for the proposed Barns Lane Farm at 39 Barns Lane suggest it is one step closer to achieving approval through Sunshine Coast Council. Developmenti has a copy of the plans on code MCU21/0030. The Barns Lane facebook page is also calling for local producers and operators to join the farm experience at @BarnsLaneFarm.

RED CROSS SERVICE RECOGNISED THREE MEMBERS OF THE COOLUM AND DISTRICT RED CROSS BRANCH WERE AWARDED THE OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD IN DECEMBER, 2021.

Winifred Smith AM, Chair of the Queensland Divisional Advisory Board and Helen Clarke, Deputy Chair visited Coolum to present the medals in person.

The Outstanding Service Award recognises members who display exceptional leadership, service or performance through their contributions to Red Cross and the community. This is a great honour for our local branch.

Coolum Branch publicity officer Margaret Mourik said despite the branch’s activities being curtailed by COVID they still plan to meet on the second Wednesday of each month at the Coolum Beach Hotel.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NEWS WITH MEMBER FOR FAIRFAX TED O’BRIEN

LIVE MUSIC IN THE SPOTLIGHT I trust you and your family have enjoyed a safe start to 2022.

INFRASTRUCTURE:

As you know, delivery of infrastructure remains my first priority and I’m proud of the fact the Sunshine Coast is now receiving more Federal funding than ever - including hundreds of millions of dollars to deliver on road and rail upgrades.

Towards the end of 2021, I also announced $8.78M for a regional food and beverage hub to be located at the Sunshine Coast Airport.

But there’s no room for complacency and that’s why I recently invited Minister Paul Fletcher MP to the Sunshine Coast to brief him first-hand on a number of critical infrastructure projects. Paul is the Federal Minister responsible for infrastructure for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

LIVE-MUSIC FUNDING:

I was delighted to begin 2022 with a massive announcement of $560,000 for the Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra managed by a Peregian Springs local.

This huge funding boost will see the orchestra’s unique brand of classical music return to stages across Australia and will be used to significantly expand their education capacity.

SUMMER ROAD TRIP:

UPCOMING SAFETY WORKS

Work is due to start on the installation of a protective screen along the full length of the Havana Road footbridge over the Motorway at Peregian Springs.

The footbridge will remain open during the day, but will be closed at night when most of the works will be completed.

NEW YEAR BRINGS PARK WORKS HAPPY NEW YEAR

I hope the weather over the festive season didn’t disrupt your plans too much.

It did throw a few of council’s timelines out for some construction projects however, including the road closure at Cinnamon Avenue, Coolum Beach.

The temporary closure is in place to replace the stormwater culvert and will need to be extended to Thursday, March 24, 2022.

OAKMONT COURT PARK SHADE

Council will soon deliver on a request to install shade sails at the playground at Oakmont Court Park, Peregian Springs.

The shade will be installed in stages, beginning with the concrete footings for the poles. Followed by the poles and shade material several weeks later.

Please follow any signage and traffic control for safety and thank-you for your patience during construction.

I am pleased to be able to provide the requested shade and hope it makes using the park a much more pleasurable and sun safe experience for children and families who use the park.

MORE PLAY AT THE BREEZE

Additional play equipment for our littlest park goers is currently being investigated for the Peregian Breeze park.

To be able to co-locate the equipment with the existing play items may result in one of the surrounding garden beds being moved and the shade sails extended to cover the new equipment.
