Property prices in Coolum Beach have skyrocketing in the past 12 months.

HOUSE PRICES SKY HIGH IT’S OFFICIAL. MORE OF US ARE ONE HOUSE SALE AWAY FROM BECOMING NEAR MILLIONAIRES.

The latest data released by CoreLogic Research shows that the median house price in Coolum has risen 26.1% in the past 12 months, from June 2020 to June 2021, and now sits at $977,326.

Units are not far behind with a median price of $648,707, up 19.3% over the same 12 month period.

CoreLogic Research Principal Eliza Owen said the spike in prices was unlike anything she Coolum News - August 2021

had ever seen before.

Eliza said a combination of less properties on the market (combined house and unit listings were 112 in June 2020 versus 54 in June 2021), less people leaving the Coast, and more moving here had created high demand for property and pushed up prices.

She said low interest rates, and the effect COVID-19 has had on the way people work, meant many higher paid professionals had realised they could still work from a remote, lifestyle, location and the Sunshine Coast was perfect for that.

FROM THE ED’S DESK LOCKDOWN! AGAIN!

Just as we started to finalise the pages for this month’s edition of Coolum News our first issue of Year 2 of operation, the dreaded COVID that sparked our very creation hit us again.

It’s been a tough 12 months for many people on the Coast, and arguably no tougher than for those working in the tourism and hospitality businesses that are so prevalent in our patch - where casual shifts and odd hours are the norm during good times - and no shifts in a flash has been on the cards consistently for a year and a half.

As I write this I’m not yet certain of when the magazine will be able to be printed and delivered in its physical form. Under the latest lockdown it seems printers are not yet

considered essential, and while our deliverers appear to be ok to work - how long for is anyone’s guess. We’ll be up online ASAP though and in your letterboxes as soon as we’re allowed to be.

It’s certainly a different time we’re living in.

While there are daily stories of people who have lost their jobs or been priced out of their rentals, there are also those who have been lucky enough to have owned their homes for a long time who are now selling for record prices and moving on to their next adventures.

If house prices keep heading the way they’re going - a $1 million median price for Coolum could be just months away. Amazing.

DRIVERS TO GET DOUBLE LANES COOLUM DRIVERS HEADING SOUTH ALONG THE SUNSHINE COAST MOTORWAY HAVE SOMETHING TO CHEER ABOUT WITH DUPLICATION OFFICIALLY ON THE CARDS.

A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson confirmed this week that planning is underway for the future duplication of about 10-kilometre of the Sunshine Motorway.

“This project will investigate doubling the motorway’s capacity from two to four lanes between David Low Way at Pacific Paradise and the northern end of the Yandina-Coolum Road interchange,” the spokesperson said.

“This section has been identified as a priority due to current traffic demands and expected future growth in the region.

“While this project will not extend to Peregian Springs, previous planning has

been undertaken for future upgrades to the Sunshine Motorway and Emu Mountain Road, between David Low Way and Eumundi-Noosa Road.

“This planning identified future requirements for duplication, new interchanges and provisions for active transport.

“Funding to progress planning for further upgrades to the Sunshine Motorway and Emu Mountain Road will be considered during future program reviews.”

At this point, it is not clear when those “future program reviews” may take place.

THE WONDER OF THE BEACH AN EARLY MORNING STROLL ALONG A BEACH LINED WITH RUBBISH PROMPTED LOCAL AUTHOR ALLISON PATERSON TO PUT PEN TO PAPER FOR HER LATEST CHILDREN’S BOOK.

Allison, a teacher-librarian who now works as an author full-time, said as she watched Council workers arrived to clean up the mess others had left behind and she wondered why they were even needed.

Through the clever use of a little wooden boat travelling on its own journey of discovery, Allison captures the essence of the environmental challenges presented by ocean waste left to float adrift by humans.

“It communicates with the litter as it tumbles into the ocean. The boat wonders and worries, will it soon have the same fate?”

Written for 4-8 year olds, the book has a strong message of recycling, sustainable practices and the avoidance of careless littering.

Coolum HeARTs is one group that continues to work hard in our community providing loads of opportunities for affordable access to the arts, music and lifestyle activities - especially to those living with significant challenges.

The group has a long history of serving the area which began over 8 years ago, when Barbara and Clive Holden (Co-Founders) had a dream to start a group to help disadvantaged people and then with local encouragement and financial help “Art with Heart” began in their Coolum home.

The group started to grow and had to rent the Potters Den, raising their own funds to become, as it is known as today, Coolum HeARTs Inc, by asking for a gold coin donation towards the rental of the shed. The organization now has 250 people a week attend their activities.

Coolum HeARTs Committee Member and Treasurer, Vivien Collins says continued growth of the group meant it became a registered Charity and then an incorporated not-for-profit association, run by volunteer Management committee members, and after a successful tender for the rental of a larger space at Coolum more activities could be offered.

Former president Rob Cobb, who has been on the committee for over 13 years said the role had been a great.

Rob said he “enjoyed every minute of it and met a lot of nice volunteers over the years”.

He said there was a lot of satisfaction and enjoyment to be had in delivering meals to clients and he always looked forward to seeing them each week and hearing their stories.

“The service and menu option to cater for individual’s needs has grown over the years,” he said.

Rob said he would encourage anyone to join the committee.

“These rewarding volunteer positions will appeal to people who are interested in ensuring older people and people with disabilities are supported in our local community”.

NOMINATE A LOCAL LEGEND

The Sunshine Coast Council is calling on locals to nominate the quiet achievers in their lives who are the fundraisers, the volunteers and the backbone of the community groups they serve for a 2022 Australia Day Award.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said they were looking for nominations across a range of categories including citizen, senior citizen and young citizen of the year. Nominations close on November 4 and award recipients will be announced on January 21, 2022.

NEW BINS COMING IN JULY 2022 MINOR GRANT WINNERS ANNOUNCED

I’m pleased to share that the following organisations were successful with their minor grant applications: • Coolum Men’s Shed Inc to construct an accessibility pathway; • Coolum Business and Tourism to commission a consultant to establish advisory committees; • Coastal Community Native Nursery for equipment for use by volunteers at the community nursery.

Minor Grants will open again on 20 September 2021, while Major Grant funding applications are open now and close 30 August 2021.

NEW PATH NEAR COOLUM PRIMARY

Work is due to begin soon on a two-metrewide pathway along the west side of Park Crescent.

The pathway will extend from the existing pathway north of Pandanus Avenue to the pathway on Yandina Coolum Road.

It has been prioritised as a result of discussions with Coolum State Primary School and parents so it’s safer for the community to access the school when walking and riding.

This change will mean the current charge will decrease, due to economies of scale.

It is likely that the State Levy rebate will be removed in the future, which would have resulted in an approximately $60 charge to residents for no new service at all!

So, in the long run there will be financial savings for existing and future users and a big reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Some properties will be exempt, however the conditions of exemption are yet to be finalised. Council will keep residents informed of planned changes which won’t start until July 2022.

GREENHOUSE BUSTING BIN MOVE

Earlier this year, residents were asked, if they would use a garden waste or a Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) bin service.

From 7500 responses, 84 percent of respondents said council should provide a service to reduce organic waste in landfill and reuse it.

This vital feedback led Council to make the decision to roll out an opt-out garden waste bin service from July 2022.

The expanded garden waste service will divert garden clippings, weeds and leaves 14

FREE MARQUEES FOR GROUPS OLYMPIC INSPIRATION

Watching all the Olympic action from Tokyo, I can’t help thinking how great the Games will be when they’re held here on the Sunshine Coast in 2032.

The eyes of the world, billions of people, will be on our backyard, which will provide a spectacular backdrop to all the exciting sporting action.

But there’s lots to do before then, now that we’ve secured the rights to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Indeed, the hard work has already begun. The Games will provide wonderful opportunities for businesses and sporting groups across the Sunshine Coast, as well as pumping millions, potentially billions of dollars into our economy.

We will also be better placed to advocate for the infrastructure we need – roads, rail, community facilities - to cater for our evergrowing population.

And, I’m hoping young, local sportspeople will be inspired by our current crop of Olympic athletes and set their sights on competing at Brisbane 2032. .

ROAD TRIPS

It was great to talk to so many constituents during my recent winter road trip to Coolum.

The hours spent in Tickle Park meeting was invaluable. Beyond helping constituents, I always learn a great deal from these road trips because locals usually shoot straight on key issues when you see them on their street corner or in their local park.

It’s why I dedicate one week each season – that is, four times a year – to these road trips COMMUNITY MARQUEES

I’m always happy to help out local sporting and community groups by providing free marquees.

I lend my marquees to groups for their events, and sometimes buy marquees for organisations who need them more regularly – such as the Coolum District Netball Association, for example, for whom I bought a new marquee recently. If you need a marquee, please contact my office.

MOTORWAY DUPLICATION WIN CONGESTION BUSTING CAMPAIGN

Finally, some good news to share in relation to our congested roads. After four years of campaigning to bust congestion, I’m pleased to announce planning for the duplication of the Sunshine Motorway has finally started.

Following multiple community-led campaigns and years of lobbying, the State Government has allocated $1.75m to start the planning process, which importantly will also include improvements to the Yandina Coolum Road roundabout, and the School Road intersection.

Construction and engineering firm SMEC have been awarded the contract that will see a 10km section of the Motorway from the David Low Way interchange to north of Yandina Coolum Road duplicated, from two lanes to four. This is a major step forward in our ongoing fight for long overdue road infrastructure upgrades in our region.

There’s no doubt our local road network is struggling to cope with the increased population, and securing this funding is a critical first step towards duplicating the Motorway, and an important acknowledgement from the State Government that they can no longer ignore the needs of our region.

I will be updating the community again in coming weeks with further information about this project, as well as important details about how you can have your say. In the meantime,

SINGLE USE PLASTICS BAN

From 1 September, all single-use plastics will be banned in Queensland. While there will be some exemptions for Queenslanders with disability or other healthcare needs, all businesses and not-for-profit groups will no longer be able to supply the banned items.These include straws and stirrers, plates and bowls, cutlery, and expanded polystyrene takeaway food containers and cups.

The National Retail Association (NRA) will work with businesses to guide them through the changes, while community groups can get more information from Boomerang Alliance, who will be hosting a forum at The J in Noosa on Monday 9 August, 5.30pm6.30pm. GIVERNY - MONET’S GARDEN

OVERSEAS TRAVEL MAY STILL BE A WHILE AWAY, BUT IT’S NICE TO DREAM. LENETTE PAUL TAKES A LOOK AT WHAT’S ON OFFER AT MONET’S GARDEN IN FRANCE.

Board a train rolling through the glorious Normandy countryside and arrive at Giverny, a village some 40 miles north-west of Paris.

The village nestles against wooded hills where two small tributaries, the Epte and the Ru, flow into the Seine. Claude Monet, the owner for over 40 years of a magnificent garden at Giverny, was a dedicated French Impressionist devoting his life to landscape painting having been reared on the Normandy Coast.

He lavished years of care and attention on his garden to create view after view of the lily pond, the iconic Chinese footbridge painted in his favourite green, and hundreds of varieties of flowers, including roses.

Monet painted outdoors (en plein aire) in all weathers in order to capture nature’s most fleeting effects.

Suspicious of his waterway diversions and fearful that the rare plants would poison the rivers, Monet was not liked by the villagers Coolum News - August 2021

who were totally unsure of his motives.

Today Claude Monet is universally admired but at first all the Impressionists were misunderstood and derided by the so-called Classical purists.

The term Impressionism was coined as a sarcastic attack by a journalist on Monet’s Impression: Sunrise. The name stuck.

Critics and cartoonists found the Impressionists an easy target.

Their bright colours and bold brushwork made their paintings seem crude and unfinished.

Although born wealthy he became estranged from his family in his early life enduring misery and poverty until well into his forties when his work started to sell.

Originally rented he bought and extended the Giverny property and transformed the garden into the popular tourist attraction it is today.

The house is a typical French villa, has no original Monets but the garden is the star show.

He had a long life into his eighties and even with failing eyesight he worked tirelessly.
