Welcome With spring comes sunshine and budburst - the first exciting preview into what 2018 vintage might bring. But first let’s reflect on the exciting triumphs 2017 has brought to Pepper Tree Wines.

We recently hosted our annual Q4 Winemakers Table Luncheon and Pooch Picnic both on the Pepper Tree grounds. Our Pooch Picnic - the biggest one yet - was a hit with furry friends of all shapes and sizes. Jump across to page 6 for full review of our Winemakers Table Luncheon.

With plenty happening around the winery and cellar door this time of year, we look forward to hosting our upcoming Spring Food and Wine Celebration, Sunday October 1st.

Set to be a fun and relaxed affair with delicious food, live music and of course a selection of Pepper Tree wines.

The recent release of the 2018 James Halliday Australian Wine Companion awarded Pepper Tree a massive 11 wines 93 points and above, with our 2014 ‘Tallawanta’ Single Vineyard Hunter Valley Shiraz the star of the show. WINE REVIEW 2014 ‘Tallawanta’ Single Vineyard Hunter Valley Shiraz The best Hunter Shiraz comes from old vines grown on the renowned red clay soils on the foothills of the Brokenback Range. The Tallawanta vineyard was planted in 1920 by the Elliot family and to this day produces some of the Hunter’s best Shiraz. Now these 90 plus year old vines produce tiny quantities of intensely flavoured fruit. Medium bodied in style with an unmatched ability to age in the bottle, this 2014 vintage is a wine of great purity, length and longevity - a true Hunter classic.

The winery is finally slowing down, now with the majority of the 2017 whites and rosé in bottle. The new 2017 Limited Release Orange Pinot Rosé looks particularly delicious, and will be perfect for warmer afternoons on their way! We have finalised the 2016 South Australian red blends as well. It is great to see all of the hard work in the vineyard paying off, and I think that the 2016 Single Vineyard Wrattonbully Shiraz - ‘The Gravels’ - will be the best we have ever made. The Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons are also of standout quality with a lovely balance of tannin and fruitfulness.

2015 ‘8R’ Single Vineyard Wrattonbully Merlot 8R Merlot is sourced off our Wrattonbully Vineyard on the Limestone Coast. This clone has only recently been introduced into Australia and is selected for its flavours and fine tannins and produces the best Merlot parcels from the vineyard. We have separated the fruit from this block as it shows more flavour and intensity with excellent structure.

I think that these wines are showing a great sense of place, with power and line that will live for many years. The winery team is very excited to get these wines blended and into bottle. I trust that the 2017 whites and rosé are the perfect accompaniment to your spring afternoon refreshments.

Beautiful rich soft Merlot characteristics with a firm structure. The palate is loaded with clean red fruit flavours and great texture from maturation in fine French oak.

WINEMAKERS TABLE LUNCHEON

Once again the winery crew did a fantastic job transforming the working winery into a glitzy and glamorous dining room adorned with fairy lights. Owner and Chef of Muse Restaurant, Troy Rhoades-Brown, tantalised the tastebuds with a delectable five course menu perfectly matched to a trio of new and museum release wines. The special event witnessed the exclusive museum release of the 2000 Grand Reserve Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and the exciting prerelease of the 2017 Single Vineyard Orange Riesling, 2017 Limited Release Orange Pinot Noir Rosé, 2015 ‘8R’ Single Vineyard Wrattonbully Merlot, 2015 ‘Elderslee Road’ Single Vineyard Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon and 2015 ‘Block 21A’ Single Vineyard Wrattonbully Cabernet Sauvignon.
