George Pepperdine founded Pepperdine University to foster an institution dedicated to promoting the highest standards of academic excellence and Christian values. Our founder was never one to play it safe. With an investment of only $5 in postage, George Pepperdine started the Western Auto Supply Company in 1909. Twenty-eight years later, despite the scope of the Great Depression, he founded George Pepperdine College at its original campus in South Los Angeles.

In 1971 Pepperdine was reorganized as a university after the School of Law was established and the departments of Business and Education were labeled as separate schools. A year later, Pepperdine moved to its present 830-acre Malibu campus, which is consistently recognized as one of the most beautiful in the nation. While a close drive to all that Los Angeles has to offer, the Malibu campus provides students with a safe, small-town atmosphere where they can thrive academically and intellectually. We hope this tour will inform you of the many ways our students are strengthened for lives of purpose, service, and leadership, as well as how they use and enjoy our Malibu campus.

The HAWC is a 24-hour student complex with study areas, big-screen TVs, ping-pong and pool tables, and a recently renovated dining center, including a convenience store and cafe open until 2 am. Our outdoor Amphitheatre boasts a beautiful view of Stauffer Chapel and beyond that, the Pacific Ocean. Celebration Chapel is led by students here Friday mornings, a great way to wrap up the week on an uplifting note.

The Center for Communication and Business opened in 2002. Along with lecture halls and offices, the facility is home to Pepperdine’s own TV station, NewsWaves, which is broadcast to more than 13,000 people in the Malibu and Calabasas area. The facility also houses our radio station, KWVS, and the newsroom for our award-winning student newspaper, the Graphic.

Please use the campus shuttles, which offer convenient transportation to the CCB.

The Pepperdine tennis pavilion, baseball stadium, and track and field boast spectacular views, helping our 17 NCAA Division I athletic programs on their way to an impressive 14 national team championships and 12 national individual championships. Our facilities have been the venues of historic sporting events. The Olympic-size swimming pool hosted the water polo matches of the 1984 Summer Olympics.

Housing the Waves Cafe, the Rockwell Dining Center also consists of our Oasis made-to-order pizza restaurant, Thai noodle bar, Nature’s Edge convenience store, and beautiful outdoor patio offering ocean-view dining every night of the week. Stop in for a snack or come back later to enjoy a meal.

More than two-thirds of Pepperdine students participate in one of the school's highly regarded study abroad programs. The most popular choices are the residential programs in which students live with classmates in Pepperdine-owned facilities in Florence, Heidelberg, Lausanne, London, and Washington, DC. As a homestay, the Buenos Aires program offers a cultural-immersion experience.

RESIDENCE HALLS

The Keck Science Center holds classes for the popular Natural Science Division. Most of the rooms inside this building are small labs used for classes and research. The one-on-one guidance and mentorship science professors provide students are assets not available at a larger university.

THE ROCK

One of the student body’s favorite traditions is painting the Rock located in the Adamson Plaza. Since 1980 the Rock has been decorated often by student groups for such events as New Student Orientation, Greek rush, birthdays, and concerts.

The Appleby Center is home to the Social Science and Religion Divisions.

As part of the general education curriculum, students are required to enroll in three religion classes. The first two classes delve into the Old and New Testaments, while the third is a Christianity and culture course.

The Cultural Arts Center houses the Seaver College Humanities and Fine Arts Divisions. Some of our unique liberal arts offerings include the Great Books Colloquium, Social Action and Justice Colloquium, Women’s Studies, African American Studies, and Film Studies programs.

The Campus Bookstore is a one-stop shop for students’ daily needs. From textbooks to school supplies, apparel, food, and toiletries, the bookstore is a convenient option tailor-made for the student body. Stop in and check out the selection of Waves gear for yourself.

The Pepperdine residence halls are a home away from home on campus, providing a safe and encouraging environment for students. Our 20 residential halls each house approximately 50 students, with six suites that share common areas and bathrooms. Our new Seaside Residence Hall began housing sophomores and juniors in fall of 2018.

The renowned Pepperdine theatre program puts on one musical and one student-produced play on the main stage every school year, and the music program produces an opera in the spring. The annual Songfest and Dance in Flight productions offer students outside the performing arts great opportunities to take the stage.

Payson Library is the nucleus of undergraduate study and research. After undergoing a complete renovation in 2016, the library reopened in fall of 2017 with state-of-the-art amenities. In the library you will find new furnishings, copious amounts of study space, our new Genesis Lab with cutting-edge technology such as 3D printing, database resources, and a fully operational Starbucks cafe. Explore the library facilities and envision yourself studying from a deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
