JANET E. KERR
Janet E. Kerr is professor emerita of law at the Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law. She began teaching at the Caruso School in 1983 and was named the school’s associate dean in 1987. In 2000 she founded the Palmer Center for Entrepreneurship and the Law and served as its executive director until 2013. In 2011 she was named the inaugural holder of the school’s Laure Sudreau-Rippe Endowed Chair. Her academic achievements included numerous teaching awards and scholarly articles in the fields of corporate law and securities regulation. In 2016 Professor Kerr took on the role of vice chancellor of Pepperdine University, a title she held until her retirement in 2023.
A technology pioneer, Professor Kerr developed and cofounded several companies focused on data analytics, document sharing, and virtual augmented reality, one of which was purchased by Bloomberg where she served as a strategic advisor. She has provided her corporate governance expertise to several organizations throughout her career, serving over the past 21 years as a director on six public boards—previously CKE Restaurants Holdings (the parent company of Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s), Fidelity National Financial, and a public mutual fund of TCW, and currently AppFolio, La-Z-Boy, and Tillys.
Her support was critical to the founding of the Disaster Relief Clinic at the Caruso School of Law, and she served as an executive producer of REMAND, the award-winning documentary about the origins of the school’s Sudreau Global Justice Institute. She was recognized as Distinguished Alumnus of Seaver College in 1994.
Janet Kerr earned her bachelor of arts in political science from Pepperdine’s Seaver College in 1975. She completed her juris doctor at the Caruso School of Law in 1978, and she holds a master of laws in corporate law from New York University.

Rick J. Caruso is a business innovator, civic leader, philanthropist, and founder and executive chairman of Caruso®, one of the largest privately held real estate companies in the United States.
Having achieved a compounded annual growth rate of nearly 20 percent since its inception, Caruso’s portfolio includes renowned retail, residential, and mixed-use properties that focus on customer experiences and serve as timeless town centers. Its newest addition is a Forbes 5-Star resort—Rosewood Miramar Beach in Montecito, California. As cited by Green Street Advisors, Caruso properties consistently outperform traditional shopping destinations in sales per square foot, with results three times the industry average.
Mr. Caruso served three mayors as the youngest commissioner in Los Angeles history when mayor Tom Bradley appointed him to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. Mayor Hahn selected him as president of the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners, where he led the effort to overhaul the Los Angeles Police Department and recruited William Bratton as chief of police. Together they reduced the city’s crime rate to the lowest levels in 50 years.
Mr. Caruso and his wife, Tina, founded the Caruso Family Foundation, dedicated to supporting organizations that improve the lives of at-risk children in need of healthcare and education. Together, they endowed the University of Southern California’s Caruso Department of Otolaryngology at the Keck School of Medicine and the USC Caruso Catholic Center. As chair of USC’s board of trustees, Mr. Caruso oversaw transformational reforms to the university’s culture and the board’s governance model to ensure accountability and oversight. In the aftermath of the recent fires in Los Angeles, he and Tina gave a $5 million lead gift to raise $20 million for critical resources for the Los Angeles Fire Department; the goal was met in six days. Following this, Mr. Caruso founded and launched Steadfast LA, a civic nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the rebuilding of Los Angeles.
Rick Caruso earned his bachelor of science at the University of Southern California in 1980 and his juris doctor at the Caruso School of Law in 1983.
