Year 4 Curriculum Summary for Parents Term 2 • 2025/26

Subject
Topics In English, the children will continue to embed the ‘Talk for Writing’ approach to literacy. Using this approach, they will produce a narrative, a letter and compose a piece of poetry.
English
Maths
The children will also continue to work on their ‘Read, Write, Inc.’ spelling program, focusing on new Year 4 spelling patterns. In Guided Reading lessons, the children will be reading and answering comprehension questions on ‘The Firework Maker’s Daughter’ and ‘Charlie and The Chocolate Factory’. In maths, the children will be improving their times table knowledge and exploring how to solve division problems, with an initial focus on solving short division problems. The children will be working on mastering tougher times table patterns, including the 4 and 8 times table. They will also be looking at the terms, ‘perimeter’ and ‘length’ and how to measure these. They will then move onto understanding the concept of decimals and finding equivalent fractions.

In thematics, Year 4 will be studying, ‘Bright Sparks’ in the first half term, exploring how energy is essential for life and progress in society. In the second half term, the theme will be, ‘Brave Hearts’, investigating the real definition of courage and finding examples where people have been truly courageous in their life. This term, the children will develop their listening, speaking and writing skills with a focus: Reviewing leisure time and giving opinions Food, meals and drinks Shopping basics Partitive articles-receptive use The children will learn how to talk about ‘going to the city’, including: What do I do in my free time? How is the weather? When does the weather change? What to do in certain weather conditions Ordinal numbers The children will be exploring ‘Outdoors’ in Spanish, with a focus on: Numbers 11-39 Sports, hobbies, leisure and outdoor activities Planning an activity Expressing preferences and ability In computing, the children will be mastering the following skills: Input, output and storage devices Design and create an on-screen prototype of a toy on Scratch Creating graphic media content through specialist software Developing pupils’ confidence in computer literacy through new keywords
In music, the children will be studying the following units: Banding together: Ensemble playing and arranging What’s that noise? Playing with tone, colour and special effects In PE and Games, the children will be developing their core hockey skills. They will be working on dribbling, passing, shooting and tackling, as well as learning basic tactics. They will be introduced to the importance of spatial awareness in games. All children will be involved in inter-school fixtures through the term.
Swimming
The children will develop kinesthetic (body and spatial) awareness, co-ordination, agility and speed through the development of all four strokes and aquatic skills. They will focus on swimming more fluently by enhancing breathing skills, using either explosive or trickle breathing techniques.
PSHE
In PSHE, the children will continue to follow the Jigsaw program of study. The focus of the Jigsaw units this term are: Relationships Changing Me
