Year 3 Curriculum Summary for Parents Term 2 • 2025/26

Topics In English, the children will continue to embed the ‘Talk for Writing’ approach to literacy. Using this approach, they will produce a narrative, a piece of writing including informative speech and complete a poetry unit.

The children will also continue to work on their ‘Read, Write, Inc.’ spelling program, focusing on new Year 3 spelling patterns. In Guided Reading lessons, the children will be reading and answering comprehension questions on ‘The Iron Man’ and ‘The Hodgeheg’. In maths, the children will be improving their times table knowledge and exploring the concept of division further. They will be aiming to consolidate their 3, 5 and 10 times table before moving on to tougher times tables. They will also be looking at the terms, ‘perimeter’ and ‘length’ and how to measure these as well as exploring the concept of ‘mass’ and ‘capacity’. They will also be working on identifying and ordering fractions. In thematics, Year 3 will be studying, ‘People or Planet’ in the first half term, with a focus on balancing the needs of people whilst protecting the natural environment. In the second half term, the theme will be, ‘Threads that link us’, investigating how people across the world are connected and why this is important. This term, the children will develop their listening, speaking and writing skills with a focus on personal information, including: Birthdays Saying/asking where someone lives, using, ‘J’habite’. Giving opinions using, ‘j’aime, je n’aime pas’, providing reasons The children will learn how to talk about different places, including: What is in the desert? What is on the island? What is in the forest? What is at home? The children will be exploring their family in Spanish, with a focus on: Introducing family members Describing people, using adjectives Talking about pets In computing, the Year 3 children will:

In music, the children will be studying the following units: Rhythm in me: Learning new rhythms from sound to notation Pentatonic party: Playing pentatonic tunes on the recorder from notation
PE
In PE and Games, the children will be developing their core hockey skills. They will be working on dribbling, passing, shooting and tackling, as well as learning basic tactics. They will be introduced to the importance of spatial awareness in games. All children will be involved in inter-school fixtures through the term.
Swimming
The children will focus on learning water skills, including star floats, bomb jumps and underwater swimming. They will aim to swim 25 metres or more unaided, with a focus on breath control, using their arms and legs appropriately. The children will continue to learn freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke.
PSHE
In PSHE, the children will continue to follow the Jigsaw program of study. The focus of the Jigsaw units this term are: Relationships Changing Me
