Year 2 Curriculum Summary for Parents Term 2 • 2025/26

Topics
English
In English we will continue to develop our reading strategies, including building our reading fluency and automatic word reading. We will also develop reading comprehension skills through our ‘Read Write Inc.’ programme and continue to use a range of grammar in our writing including conjunctions, adjectives and adverbs to develop our ideas more clearly.
Maths
In maths we will continue our learning on addition and subtraction with 2-digit numbers. We will then move on to multiplication and division where we will learn the symbols for these calculations and use arrays to show multiplication facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times table. This will help us to progress to recalling our multiplication and division facts for these times tables. We will also begin our learning on ‘Fractions’, finding halves, thirds and quarters of amounts. In our learning on ‘Money’ we will practise using different coins to make amounts and solve problems involving money.
Thematic approach
This half term our thematic theme is ‘Invent it!’ We will be learning about how inventions have been created to solve problems and how these have changed over time. We will design our own inventions to solve a problem and use recycled materials to model these, using a variety of techniques to join materials. Next term our theme is ‘Green Guardians’ which has a focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship. We will learn about significant individuals who have had an impact, follow enquiries about some of the challenges facing our planet and find our voices to champion positive change in our world.
French
For children who have chosen to learn French, we will learn how to say our birthday as well as say and ask where one lies using ‘J’habite’. We will also learn to express opinions using ‘j’aime’ and ‘je n’aime pas’.
Kiswahili
In our Kiswahili lessons we will learn to say the long date using numbers with ‘hundreds’ and ‘thousands’. We will learn to name domestic and wild animals and also name different school subjects.
Spanish
For children who have chosen to learn Spanish, we will be learning how to say our ages, express our feelings and escribe how we look. We will learn numbers up to 30.
Computing
In year 2 computing this term, children will learn to program a ‘Beebot’ and program a screen-based object using ‘Logo’. They will also use pre-set instructions to program the movements of a screenbased turtle.
Music
Read it, write it and sing it! We will begin writing rhythms in stick notation. We will also develop our aural imagination and learn about the relationship of pitches with new recorder notes.
PE
In Gymnastics we will be linking shapes, speed and directions purposefully within sequences and creating longer more complex movement sequences both independently and in small groups. In cross country we will run for longer periods with improved pacing and stamina and develop our resilience when completing cross country challenges. Our ball skills focus will be developing throwing, catching and rolling with greater accuracy and apply these skills in simple teamwork games.
Swimming
In year 2 swimming lessons we will learn basic water safety and survival skills. We will continue to develop our co-ordination in the pool as well as catching, gliding and buoyancy skills. The children will also focus on their basic stroke preparation.
PSHE
We follow the ‘Jigsaw’ scheme for PSHE and this half term we will be exploring ‘dreams and goals’. We will talk about our aspirations, how to achieve goals and reflect on what qualities have helped us to achieve success. After half term our topic is ‘Healthy Me’. We will be exploring ways of keeping safe and healthy in terms of both our physical and mental health.
