We continue to follow the Read Write Inc. Phonics scheme At this stage, children will be confident in recognising all taught sounds and applying these when reading and spelling. Our focus continues to be making correct spelling choices for sounds which have different ways of writing them. We are reading increasingly ambitious texts with a particular focus on fluency and expression. We are engaging with texts through discussions, answering questions and exploring vocabulary in context.
In maths we will be building on our learning on ‘Fractions’ from year 1, exploring how to find half, quarter and third of shapes and amounts. We will explore the relationship between 2 quarters and half and also find three-quarters of amounts. In our ‘Money’ topic, we will learn to identify the value of coins in both UK and Kenyan currency, combine coins to make totals and practise giving change. We will develop our reasoning and problem-solving skills throughout these topics. We will also learn how to tell the time accurate to quarter hours and show this on an analogue clock.
In our first half of term our focus is on ‘Celebrations Around the World’. We will be exploring how different faiths and cultures celebrate important events throughout the year and using our enquiry approach to pose and answer questions about how different communities celebrate important events. After half term our theme is ‘Stories of Our Land’ where we will be enjoying and exploring a range of stories from Kenya by Kenyan authors, focusing on traditional stories from Kenya that reflect culture, values, and history. Children will listen to, discuss, and retell a range of Kenyan tales, strengthening their storytelling skills and cultural understanding.
In French our learning will be around the topic ‘Pets and parties’. In ‘Pets’ we will learn core animal vocabulary linked to articles and plurals. With ‘Colours’ we will learn about adjective agreement (gender + plural) and apply this to pets and party items. During ‘Festivals & Parties’ we will learn vocabulary for celebrations, food, gifts, greetings and make cultural comparisons.
Kiswahili In Kiswahili we will be learning how to talk about school activities, class items, clothes, colours. We will also practise asking questions and answering them.
Spanish In Spanish our learning will be around the topic ‘The Calendar’. We will name seasons in Spanish, describe the weather, name days of the week and months in Spanish

In computing we will learn to collect, record and organise data including using a graphing package, and interpret graphs to answer questions. We will also use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content. In addition, we will recognise common uses of information technology beyond school. In terms of e-safety, we will use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies.
In Music we are building on our recorder and music literacy skills so that we can read new music from a simple staff that shows both pitch and rhythm. Pupils will use their reading skills to assist them in playing in canon and to record their own musical ideas. We will finish the term by introducing the P-Buzz (trombone meets vuvuzela), to support sound improvisation and to begin playing independent parts in an ensemble setting.
Our PE this term will focus on the consolidation of fundamental movement skills. We will be improving our control in ball handling and movement and continue developing simple communication and teamwork skills. In tennis we will be developing more consistent racquet control and be introduced to serving and partner rallies.
In Games this term, we will be introducing the children to the sports of rugby and netball. We will be teaching them the core skills of these sports as well as introducing them to basic tactical and spatial skills. They will continue to develop their cardiovascular fitness and will be taking part in warm up and cool down exercises and stretches at the beginning and end of each session, talking about their importance.
Year 2 will focus on their basic water skills; Developing water confidence, water survivals skills, water entries as well building their propulsion and stroke techniques.
At the start of Term 3 we begin our new topic ‘Healthy Me’. We will be exploring ways we can have a healthy lifestyle and learning about different food groups that keep us healthy. We will also explore ways we can relax to look after our wellbeing and how medicines can help us when used safely. After half term our theme is ‘Dreams and
Goals’. We will be reflecting on our growth over the year and what helped us to be successful. We will discuss how we can overcome obstacles as well as setting targets to continue our growth journey into next year.
