Welcome From The Top 3

We would like to warmly welcome all members of the Peponi Community to the 2022-2023 year. To the new members of our Peponi family; pupils, parents and teachers alike we hope that you feel supported and con dent for this new chapter. We strive to create a warm and friendly environment encouraging us to be inquisitive, ambitious, resilient and compassionate.

After a long break, we’re eager to be back and face what is to come. A new academic year brings with it the chance to continue growing and working towards the best versions of ourselves. is year also comes with new opportunities both inside and outside of our comfort zones. It is up to us to ensure that we make the most of it. Let us remember to be thankful for all our experiences – celebrating our triumphs and learning from our mistakes.

School Chapel Service Jipe

On a beautiful sunny Sunday morning, the 18th of September, 2022 Jipe House had the great honour of hosting the rst chapel service of the Academic Year. e Chapel was lled with joy, music and praise as we were all happy to see everyone back from holiday. e sermon delivered a wonderful insight on both the week that was and going forward. As the congregation left the Chapel, all faces were smiles, the air was lled with the sound of their voices as they caught up on events they had missed during the summer break.

Rhino Cup Debate 2022

e Rhino Cup Debating Challenge brings teams from 16 International schools in Kenya to participate in a highly stimulating and invigorating debate. To qualify for the next round, the team must carry out endless research, brain storm sensitive topics as a team and most importantly convince the judges with their powerful and awless arguments. Once again Peponi is taking part in the competition and were powerful enough to defeat Naisula School in the rst round of the debate held at Peponi School.

e debate team this year consists of Saahir Dewany (LVI - M), Maansi Ruparel (LVI - E), Ryan Gontier (LVI - C), Dean Ngirici (UVI - C), Dia Obuoja (UVI - J), Ella Ndubai (UVI - E) and a number of A-Level English pupils as well as seasoned Debaters.

In the rst round against Naisula, Peponi proposed the motion that stated: Cosmetic Surgery is Never an Option and the motion went to Peponi School although truth be said Naisula was quite impressive especially in the use of humour.

We are looking forward to the next round to be held on Wednesday 12th of October at Peponi School. e motion for the second round reads: at the Empowerment of the girl child has weakened the boy child For this round, Peponi is Opposing. So far the team is working hard and we are hopeful of a second victory. We look forward to Peponi taking part in this competition all the way to the nals to be held in late November.

Young Vocalists’ Competition 2022 Finals

We recently hosted the second edition of the Young Vocalists’ Competition at Peponi School. is event is modelled on the successful Young Musicians’ Competition, which has been running for 25 years. e Junior Solo category is open to singers 15 years and younger and the Senior Solo category for 16-19 year olds. Competitors must sing two contrasting songs, which can be from a wide variety of genres, including Classical, Traditional, Jazz standards, Popular songs, Musical eatre and Film soundtracks. It could even be an own composition!

e preliminaries were held on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th September 2022 whilst the Finals took place on Sunday 9th October 2022. I was delighted to see more competitors, more Senior soloists and more schools involved. We hope that next year we can double the number of competitors!

Congratulations to Faith Njoroge (LV - J) and Saiyana Pandya (UV - E) for their participation. Amara Pannu (LV - J) reached the Junior Solo Final whilst Maansi Ruparel (LVI - E), having won the Junior Solo Final last year, triumphed in the Senior Solo Final!

World Scholars Global Round

e World Scholars’ activity is indeed a challenging but very interesting activity which starts in February at Light Academy and has the nal round in Yale in November.

‘When I rst applied to World Scholars, I didn’t think it would be all that fun. I never imagined that I would get the chance to go the Czech Republic with my friends for the same

e trip to Prague was one of the best experiences ever. e team worked hard but also did a lot of fun activities including going on a cruise, visiting the world’s largest castle, seeing the oldest clock still in operation, all the while trying to make sure we didn’t get whisked away to the other side of the city by getting on Tram 19 instead of tram 9 as happened to the Juniors on their rst day- baptism by re. We also took pleasure in the little things in life, like buying McDonald’s every time we went out.

World Scholars itself is a program with self-improvement and being comfortable with who you are. You have to study for some tests and work on your debating skills, but if you work really hard and make it past the regional round in Kenya and get to a global round, you get to travel to somewhere in the world (this year there were Global rounds in Shanghai, Dubai and Prague). If you work even harder, you can quality or the Tournament of Champions hosted at Yale University in New Haven USA.

Congratulations to Saavir Karania (LVI - C) for representing Kenya with the U19 Cricket team at the World Cup quali ers in Nigeria.

Sports Report

Over 130 xtures, 340 pupils, 8 sports, 6 new principles for success and a support network of 30+ leading individuals in Peponi Sport; we have well and truly returned with a bang for Michaelmas 2022. Great games, player progress, competitive spirit, positive attitudes, magic moments and life lessons; six new principles underpinning our games programme for all. Following these, our aim is to foster a lifelong love for sport and physical activity as well as to support those aspiring for success at the higher echelons of competitive sport. We have started with relative success, and all pupils are beginning to nd their competitive edge once again after a period of lacklustre competition due to COVID.

Girls’ Basketball

e basketball season for the girls began at the turn of this term. e season will include invitational tournaments, friendlies, and the KAISSO nals on 12th November 2022 for the U19s and 19th November 2022 for the U15s to end their respective seasons. With regards to this half term’s greatest games so far, the U19s vs Rossyln Academy and Rift Valley Academy take the prize, where the girls played their hearts out and encouraged one another as a team. During the game against RVA, there was one particular moment of magic where Gabriela Muwaga (Shell - J) slotted a rim-less 3-point shot from a pass given by Natasha Njoroge (UVI - E). Her teammates ran to her in a moment of elation while the opponents stood in awe, all players almost forgetting the game was ongoing!

All players are showing great progress in both their individual and team game, but none more so than the U15 girls; they have developed an evident passion for the game in such a short space of time. ey show up on time, every time and even dedicate extra time to improving their skills after school.

ere is a lot of well-directed competitive spirit among the U15 team as each one wants to play for the school team, and they are demonstrating an understanding of playing for a purpose. e U19s, after seeing their improvement in each game, have each individually really focused their e orts and are actively investing their time to learn about the game and to even compete for a spot in the starting ve. All in all, we are con dent that our young ladies are accumulating valuable life lessons as the result of recognising the power of a positive attitude.

Boys’ Football

e extended holiday break provided a challenge for many of our young players in both the senior and junior squads. Ball control and individual skills, as well as teamship and tactical understanding were something of a distant memory since this was the rst proper season of a competitive spirit with the return of inter-school xtures for football.

However, in terms of individual player progress, all the boys nding their groove and after dedicating themselves, they are now beginning to see the results of the investment. Ascanio Tuccillo (LV - M) is an excellent example, where he has now developed into a proven leader for the U15B team as their captain. rough a boundless positive attitude during xtures, he has successfully secured his place in the team.

James Luusa (UVI - C) and Dean Ngirici (UVI - C) also deserve their mention for securing a place in the team, purely on their infectious attitude towards a love for the game and an eagerness to learn and Harold Wanyama’s (UVI - C) con dence and ball control has grown steadily as he now e ectively uses the inside of the foot when passing & receiving the ball.

For the remainder of the term, the squad will shift focus slightly to their mental game, where we need to explore and identify our competitive spirit in matches as, so far this season, we are often guilty of losing our edge once we concede a goal, or when we lose those 1-on-1 opportunities to beat our opponents.

Cricket

With over 40 enthused boys involved in cricket after the COVID disruption it has been amazing seeing the zeal, love and passion for the game released like a caged lion, perhaps stronger than previous years. By holding each other accountable, the boys have been put through their paces in a bid to reestablish their competitive spirit by not only working on the individual aspects in both bowling and batting, but also in how to bring that together as a team to ensure that we play by the book with clinical precision, if not occasionally a little o -piste to rouse our opposition as we look to explore our mental game. Of course, cricket is about patience, perseverance and tact, and over the last half term, we have worked on exploring alternative tactical approaches to our game with both our U15s and U19s such as staying in the game and punishing the bad balls in the rst 10 overs.

Trying to encourage the players not to nibble at a tempting slog has undoubtedly proven challenging with many of our players eager to nd that perfection connection for a big six. However, the boys have taken ownership in that respect, and collectively chose to adopt this tactic as they recognised the lack of return for such risky play.

is proved challenging at the start but it is genuinely good to see that it has now become commonplace in peer-to-peer coaching and conversation, especially from our U15s team leaders Yuv Galaiya (Shell - C) and Arthur Bailey (Shell - M), who are both Shell pupils and are still looking to put their stamp on the game at Peponi. For these boys in particular, their batting has massively improved from where we started, and it is pleasing to see that they are invested in their individual progress.

Saavir Karania (LVI - C) has been an exceptional role model for both his older peers and our youngest cohorts. His hard work and dedication to the game a orded him the opportunity to represent Kenya in the U19 world cup quali ers in Nigeria in early October. National representative honours is no mean feat, and we genuinely congratulate Saavir on such an achievement that will be a celebrated success story for years to come. We are con dent that he, paired with our new U19 captain, Aditya Saini (UVI - C), will collectively form a pathway for our younger pupils to follow onto greatness, we could not have asked for a senior leadership pairing with greater potential in our history.

ere have been ample magic moments so far this term, but what stood out for us was what will be a strong contender for our greatest game of the season against Oshwal Academy. Prior to, we had just played two very di erent games against e Rising Stars Academy.

Swimming

It was fantastic to see the return of swimming galas across the international school community and county championships. Much excitement was brewing amongst the U14 cohort, with many swimmers representing the school in their rst ever gala at Rosslyn Inter-school meet on Saturday 17th September.

Swimmers demonstrated some robust positivity in their attitudes and embraced the challenge and pressure brought on by the opposition times. Peponi School performed incredibly well with the team winning third place overall. It was truly a magic moment when, during the event, Neema Ruwa (Shell - E) and Saamanta

Selvon (LV - E) cleaned up all their races with rst place nishes.

Our shortcoming in our rst xture against them was our elding and we quickly recognised our need to improve this part of our game. e boys quickly addressed it and when we faced Oshwal, the boys were super clinical and ruthless in their elding from the 1st over to the 16th over, in which time, we achieved more run-outs than wickets. In Cricket, Oshwal are our top rivals and demonstrated a di erent class in this game. is was exactly the reaction that the team we needed just after our match against Rising Stars and in nal preparation for our tour to South Africa during the October half-term. Aman Shah (LVI - C) is just one of many individuals to highlight with regards to positivity during games and training as he is coachable and immediately responds to feedback with strong e ect; he is currently our best wicket taker. Against our other rivals, Premier Academy, he took a ruthless ve

e squad then faced Nairobi County Level One Swimming Championship and displayed great skills and racing technique. All races were incredibly close and this was re ected in the nal score as Peponi School girls team won 1st runners up trophy and twenty medals. e team is looking forward to level three and more galas after midterm break.

BUSINESS FIESTA 2022

Business Fiesta

My Business Studies teacher once asked our business class, “where is the wealthiest area in Nairobi?”, we all gave the expected answers Runda, Muthaiga, etc., the answer he gave us shook me, he said “the wealthiest area in Nairobi is the cemetery, because that is where ideas worth billions lie.” I asked myself what I could do to help Peponi as a community to avoid this catastrophe, to see some of these ideas come to fruition.

I then approached my teacher with the idea of the Fiesta, to my joy he had done an event very similar to this in his previous school so together we decided to plan a better one, the next few weeks consisted of meetings and discussions, sorting out logistics, nances, health and safety, and creativity: essentially, running the businesses akin to nancial markets out there to give the business owners relevant experience. e turnout and stalls being registered was larger than expected with the Fiesta raising 6 gures for charity.

Similar to the business owners, I, too, learnt a few lessons from the success of the event. Fuelled but this, I decided to appoint a “government” to work under me and plan the Fiesta for this year to operate more as a conglomerate, with the whole school being involved. We wanted the parents to be involved in order to see the wonders that can be achieved if a community works together to achieve a common goal.

After speaking to the pupil body a number of times I felt that I had nally ignited the spark which I had set out to ignite and the hard work, intelligence, creativity, and community spirit that was felt on the day is evidence of that spark. Alexander the great once said, “Glory crowns the deeds of those who expose themselves to toils and dangers.”

Lower V Exploration Day Sagana Trip

On Wednesday, 5th October 2022, the entire year group of Peponi Lower V pupils and their tutors, left Peponi School during early morning hours for Sagana town, to undertake a whitewater rafting trip among other activities. e journey to Sagana was uneventful and we arrived at Savage Wilderness Camp at 9.30am. After being welcomed by Ms Lilian and the Guide team, we had a brie ng and overview of the day’s programme and immediately got into the activities. e activities included white water rafting, Kayaking, team building and a visit to a local shery.

My group began with the white water rafting and the safety brie ng given by the river guide was scary to say the least, but all of us were committed to brave the fast river waters and have the adventure of a lifetime. After wearing our gear and collecting our paddles, we all jumped into the rafts to begin the high adrenaline action packed adventure. At the beginning of the raft trip, all was calm and scenic. We could all see the cascading waterfalls and all the rafts were oating in a large calm pool of water. After receiving our set of instructions, which had us practicing paddle strokes, jumping left and right within the boat, all of us were sweating and hot, early in the trip.

e scenic landscape by the river bank, swimming down the river and playing Pirates amongst the rafts, had us all pumping with adrenaline and shrieking and shouting throughout the journey. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. e raft trip was fun packed and I got to know more of my year mates better and make unforgettable memories.

e teambuilding activities were also a lot of fun and we got to solve challenging problems as a team. Our instructors were fun and instructive and my group managed to score high points in the challenges set.

I enjoyed the kayaking activity and got to practice my paddling and steering. It was initially very di cult since there was a current, but after some practice, I was able to navigate and move in my kayak. A lot of my friends struggled to kayak and many went swimming when their kayaks toppled over. It was great fun. e last activity for our group was a visit to the local shery. I learnt of the various types of sh found in Kenya and saw many types of sh at the shery.

I wish to thank the teachers for organizing the trip and I hope to make it on more fun pack adrenaline trips.

Peponi Explorers Society Team Aberdare Mountains Trip

e Peponi Explores Society Team (PESTs) undertook a challenging adventure trip to the Aberdare Mountains on the 16th – 18th September 2022. e pupils turned up in overwhelming numbers and it was the largest group ever in the history of the PESTs trips, to embark on a trip. e Trip kicked o on Friday 16th September 2022 at 2.00pm and the pupils travelled to Wanjohi area, which rests at the foothills of the Aberdare mountains. e journey to camp was eventful since we encountered a tra c jam due to a wrecked truck on the road. e journey took 5 hours and we arrived at camp as the sun set and the chilly weather of the Aberdare encompassed the camp.

e pupils quickly set about, putting up their tents and settling into the camp and before long, the camp was done and dinner preparation ensued. It was a cold night on day one but thankfully, it did not rain.

Day Two, started at the crack of dawn, where the PEST team was up and moving by 5:45am. Morning duties and chores were quickly attended to and all pupils had a sumptuous breakfast. e team then left camp, to head to Wanjohi town, where they faced the challenging route of the 7 ponds circuit. e initial start of the hike was very tough and demanding.

e sheer steepness of the ascent had everyone grasping at tree roots and any blade of grass on the path, to help and assist in the climb. Boy, was it steep and slippery for the initial 4Kms!! Everybody pushed hard and by mid-morning, all were walking in the moorland section of the mountain.

e weather was favorable for it was cool and cloudy. We walked through the rugged and treacherous terrain and half the group managed to summit the mountain.

e walk down was epic since the steepness of the ridges had everybody sliding and crouching low, to manage the descent down the mountain. All pupils nally descended the mountain as dusk came in and though we were all tired, we were lled with pride of achievement. It was a beautiful day to be remembered in spite of the pain and e ort it took for each one of us to summit the mountain. at evening, we ate an early dinner and We all slept early, for we were bone tired and fatigued.

Day ree was the last day of the PEST trip and it began with a relaxed breakfast meal at 8am. After breakfast, the PEST team broke camp and packed away all their tents and belongings by 10.00am. e team left the camp and begun the journey, back to school. e Team stopped for lunch en-route and thereafter proceeded to school. e pupils got to Peponi School at 4.00pm and that brought to conclusion, the Aberdares 7 ponds circuit PESTs trip. e 3 day trip had many challenges and most of us were pushed to our limits. All in all, we all got back okay, though beat down and battered, but stronger in mind, body and spirit. May the Spirit of adventure burn brightly in all of us and may the journey of self-discovery prevail.

New Members of Common Room

Sam Tucker Teacher of English

Samuel is an experienced English teacher originating from Britain. For the past 3 years, he has worked as Head of English for a British school in China and has led pupils there to achieve excellent grades in their Cambridge IGCSE courses.

Alongside this, he has completed his MEd focusing on language and literacy; namely, how English teachers can develop pupils’ mastery over reading comprehension and writing uency. Alongside teaching, Samuel has often led pupils with their Duke of Edinburgh Award and their Ten Tor’s training schemes. He has a long-established background in many outdoor pursuits, ranging from hiking and climbing, to kayaking and archery. He has worked as an Assistant Director for a summer school and an activities leader for United World Colleges. He has also spent time as a Choral Scholar, singing around Britain, Europe and America.

Gladys joined Peponi in September as a teacher of Spanish and Swahili. She has been teaching for the last ten years, evincing a particular passion for the Spanish language and its culture. At her previous school, Premier Academy, she encouraged many pupils to participate in Spanish cultural activities. Apart from teaching, she also has a passion in counselling. She has worked with young boys and girls from di erent regions with an aim of helping them to be emotionally, socially and physically healthy. She is currently studying for her Masters

Concepta Juma

Teacher of Psychology and Sociology

Concepta Juma joins us this term to teach Psychology and Sociology. She comes, most recently from Premier Academy and Oshwals Academy, with vast experience in a variety of roles: she has taught both the Cambridge and Pearson GCE & IGCSE syllabuses; she has coordinated PSHE programmes, and she has headed the Careers Department, in her former stations. “I am happy to be part of this vibrant community and look forward to working in Peponi School and with the student body. As a teacher, my main focus is to equip students with skills that will not only make them successful in academics but also mould them to be better citizens, daughters and sons. I believe that with all the support I am receiving, I shall thrive at my goal and make a di erence.”

Coralie Moon completed her teacher training in Essex, United Kingdom. She is an accomplished drama and dance teacher, who had had experience teaching all year groups from year 1- year 13. In her most recent post in China, she was the lead teacher of drama for the British International School. Using her experience in contemporary dance training, she enjoys exploring new ideas within performing arts. Coralie's past repertoire has included musicals such as Madagascar Jr, Oliver the musical, Mamma Mia and Cabaret. She has also directed adaptations of Shakespeare's plays and smaller scale drama and dance showcases. She has workshopped with theatre performances such as War Horse, Chicago and Tavaziva dance company, who's methods are now incorporated into her lessons.

Coralie Moon Teacher of English and Head of Drama

Hannah Sweatman joins us in both the Physical Education and Mathematics departments. Despite a wealth of interests outside of the classroom, teaching has always been her main focus.

Both in the UK, she has assisted in her middle leadership roles, both in Numeracy Across the Curriculum and as a Head of Year. Both roles championed her passion with, and focus on collaboration between departments as well as with transitioning between schools. new things and isn't afraid of a challenge. More recently, Hannah has taken up golf and ultimate frisbee. She has played rugby for UK premiership teams, Aylesford and Harlequins, and she is also proud of her UK representation in competitive Cheerleading! Whilst in Egypt, Hannah accepted a voluntary role liaising with the Egyptian Rugby Union to help formalise league structure and organisation.

Esther Mwangi

Teacher of Religious Studies and Geography

Esther Mwangi joins Peponi School with a wealth of experience in classroom teaching, athletics coaching, trips and outdoors activities, and the boarding side of school life, having taught in schools in England and Kenya. A highly motivated and enthusiastic teacher, Esther is dedicated to helping children grow in con dence and nd joy in their learning. With years of experience in boarding and accustomed to working in a multicultural environment, Esther sets high standards in order to ensure that the boarding house is happy and homely, and that the pupils who leave her care are kind, respectful, well-mannered, independent, sociable and responsible world citizens. Esther spends her spare time raising awareness about Childhood Cancer, travelling and hiking.

Teacher of Biology

As a Teacher of Biology, Laura Gillespie joins us this term. Laura is an experienced science teacher having worked both in the U.K. and internationally, her last post being Assistant Headteacher in Tanzania.

She has a great deal of experience in pastoral leadership which is her main passion outside the classroom. She believes that students are only able to succeed academically if they are supported in all areas of their life and positive relationships are at the heart of any successful school.

Being a Biology teacher, Laura has real curiosity about the natural world and when not teaching is usually found exploring the weird and wonderful corners of the Earth, most recently the Galapagos Islands. Her love of the outdoors has led to ten years of involvement in outdoor education, assisting with both the Duke of Edinburgh (PA) and Ten Tors programs; something she is keen to continue at Peponi School.

After studying Business Management in the UK, Katrina began her career in events management and hospitality. As our new Registrar, she is very keen to welcome and support both current and new pupils as they join the Peponi family. Katrina is very passionate about customer service, and ensuring that everyone who visits Peponi School feels welcome and valued.

I am from the South of England and I attended Godolphin School in Salisbury for 7 years. I have come to Kenya because I love to travel, explore new places and meet new people, but also because I love working with children and hope to gain valuable experience and con dence before training to become a teacher at university. I have a place at the University of Reading to study Primary Education with a specialism in Art and I hope to become a primary school teacher after this. Some of my passions include baking (especially cake), sports, drama and musicals, my favourite musicals are Hamilton and Hairspray, and the band One Direction.

I have come from Radley College in Oxfordshire, England and I am here because I like to travel, experience di erent cultures and I hope to understand Kenyan culture more during my stay, immersing myself in as great a variety of activities as possible. Next year, I am hoping to go to Edinburgh University to study Politics and Economics as I am passionate about business and entrepreneurship… but also enjoy football.

I am from the South of England and was previously at Godolphin School in Salisbury for 5 years. Whilst in Kenya, I am excited to experience an entirely di erent culture and way of life that is so di erent to England as well as to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the wider world. I currently have a place at Bristol University starting in 2023 to study Liberal Arts and within the degree I hope to focus on French. I have a passion for art, which I took at A-Level, and I also enjoy playing multiple sports such as Athletics and Netball.

I have come to Peponi from London, England for a term after I completed my A-Levels last year at Radley College in Oxfordshire. While in Kenya, I have been able to teach at KCCL and N’dini Primary School to furthering my experience that I have from the U.K. working with pupils with special educational needs. I’m also a keen sportsman, so I am also looking forward to working with the Peponi Sports teams, in the afternoons. I have a place to study Physiological Sciences at the University of Newcastle in 2023, and I hope to study Medicine as a Postgraduate in the future. My main sport is Hockey, but I also play Tennis, Squash, Cricket and Rugby. I’m also a big Manchester United supporter.
