THE FUTURE OF MOBILITY NETWORKS FIVE CITIES PAVING THE WAY
Three years ago, PeopleForBikes set out to accelerate the construction of safe and complete bicycle networks in five U.S. cities. The Final Mile, a partnership between Wend Collective and PeopleForBikes, achieved that goal.
By combining proven advocacy strategies with public communication tools, this effort builds broad support for new, cost-effective mobility networks. The Final Mile utilized a dynamic, accelerated approach to create alignment between existing political will and untapped community support by providing the necessary resources for cities to rapidly accelerate the pace of bikeway network implementation.

Providence constructed 43 miles of new bikeways under their Great Streets Initiative, with 22 more miles planned for 2022. Providence utilizes a network of “urban trails,” in which a two-way bike trail is fully protected from traffic on one side of the street. These urban trails are safer and more inclusive than traditional bike lanes, allowing more space for wheelchair and non-traditional bike users, as well as giving a safer option for riders traveling in the same direction to pass.
