PENTATONE Anniversary 25 Years of Excellence

(2001–2026)

2001 – Foundation

PENTATONE was founded in the Netherlands by three former executives of Philips Classics, following its sale and merger with Universal Music Group. The label still currently resides in the legendary villa in Baarn, The Netherlands.

From the beginning, PENTATONE built upon the legendary DSD recording expertise and SACD production technology developed at Philips Classics.

The founders established the label with a clear mission: to produce classical music recordings of the highest possible quality, while staying at the forefront of the most advanced recording technologies.

Early 2000s –International Breakthrough

PENTATONE achieved worldwide recognition with a GRAMMY

winning production of Peter & the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev, narrated in different languages by international stars and famous personalities such as Mikhail Gorbachev, Bill Clinton, Sophia Loren and Antonio Banderas (Spanish language edition). The recording was conducted by Kent Nagano with the Russian National Orchestra.

All narrator proceeds were donated to charity, making this both an artistic and humanitarian landmark. It also demonstrates - from the start - the label’s

ability to combine musical excellence, bold artistic vision, and broad appeal (even via spoken-word, children’s repertoire).

Another major early success was the release of Music from the Royal Wedding of Willem-Alexander and Máxima Zorreguieta. The album sold over 75,000 copies, achieving Triple Platinum status in the Netherlands, with a remarkable percentage of Dutch households still owning a copy today

2001–2010 – The First Decade: Building the Core Catalogue

During its first decade, PENTATONE established a powerful artistic identity with numerous award-winning releases, including recordings with international violin star Julia Fischer, whose career was significantly shaped during this collaboration.

Major complete cycles released during this period include:

– Beethoven Symphonies, conducted by Philippe Herreweghe

– Beethoven Piano Sonatas, performed by Mari Kodama

– Bruckner Symphonies, conducted by Marek Janowski

Violinist Arabella Steinbacher also emerged as one of the defining artists of this era.

A historic achievement of this period was the complete recording of all ten mature operas by Richard Wagner, a monumental contribution to the recorded operatic repertoire.

PENTATONE: Award Highlights

To date, PENTATONE regularly receives recognition from international publications, demonstrating the label’s consistent excellence across a broad range of repertoire (choral, orchestral, opera, and contemporary) and reinforcing its reputation as a leading classical music label worldwide. PENTATONE Anniversary

2013 – 2020 – New Management & Digital Expansion

In 2013, a new management team ushered PENTATONE into a new phase, with a renewed focus on:

– Design and branding

– Digital distribution platforms

– An expanded and more diverse repertoire

Key artistic partnerships from this period include:

– Conductors: Vladimir Jurowski, René Jacobs, Esa-Pekka Salonen

– Singers: Piotr Beczała, Lisette Oropesa, Javier Camarena, Ian Bostridge, Magdalena Kožená

– Instrumentalists: Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Francesco Piemontesi, Alisa Weilerstein

– Ensembles: Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Czech Philharmonic

This period also marked a strong expansion into American opera and collaborations with contemporary composers, which remains a core component of PENTATONE’s history and future.

2021–Present – Entering the Third Decade

In its third decade, PENTATONE continues to focus on:

– Continuous innovation

– A growing and diverse artist roster

– Cutting-edge sound and production technology

– Growing in sync and licensing

Recent landmark collaborations include:

– The multi-award-winning Mahler Cycle with the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, honored with awards by both Gramophone Magazine and BBC Music Magazine

– A long term collaboration with the Singapore Sympony Orchestra, including several recordings with star violinist Chloe Chua.

– An expansive collaboration with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal conducted by Rafael Payare including recordings of Mahler, Schönberg and Ravel

– Strengthened partnerships with significant American orchestras, such as Minnesota Orchestra

Detroit Symphony Orchesta

The label continues to champion its well-established soloists and introduce outstanding new talents, such as Sean Shibe, Tiffany Poon, Yulianna Avdeeva, Illia Ovcharenko, Rosa Feola, Lara Downes, Alon Sariel, Eleonora Buratto, Miró Quartet, Magdalena Kožená, Saskia Giorgini, Erin Morley and Denis Kozhukhin, whose international recognitions continue to grow.

PENTATONE also remains deeply connected to the Dutch musical landscape through enduring collaborations with leading

ensembles and artists, including Cappella Amsterdam, Holland Baroque, Calefax, and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic under Karina Canellakis.

PENTATONE has also expanded into highquality vinyl production, combining state-of-the-art sound with premium physical formats. It was also the first label to introduce the mobile optimized booklet into the market.

A Unified Artistic Vision

Today, PENTATONE consistently demonstrates exceptional care across every aspect of its work: artist relations, design and visual identity, communication and public relations, printing, materials, and tactile quality.

Each release is conceived not simply as a recording, but as a fully curated artistic object—with thoughtfully commissioned liner-note authors, photography, imagery, and video content. Every element is interconnected, ensuring that each product tells a complete and immersive story, making every release a unified narrative experience beyond the music itself.
