Continuing our endeavours Being awarded Label of the Year 2019 by Gramophone magazine is a truly fulfilling recognition, an approval of our new direction. The award is both a precious honour for what we’ve achieved and a big motivation to continue along our path. This year the ICMA awards us as Label of the Year 2020. Being recognised as an outstanding label in two consecutive years by two such eminent bodies is a true confirmation of our endeavours. So we couldn’t start 2020 more excited; with two major awards and a diverse, carefully curated release planning rolled out with attention for all individual projects and formats. Simon M. ENTATONE commemorates Beethoven’s 250th birthday with several new releases, including his complete string quartets performed by the Miró Quartet, as well as the complete piano concertos interpreted by Inon Barnatan, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Alan Gilbert. Beethoven’s symphonies are presented in two highly original and utterly different interpretations by Marek Janowski and the WDR Symphony Orchestra on the one hand, and Andrew Manze and the NDR Radiophilharmonie on the other.

Our biggest trump card of the Beethoven year, however, is Mari Kodama’s homage album Kaleidoscope, in which Beethoven is presented through the lens of other great composers. The programme consists of string quartets transcribed for piano by SaintSaëns, Mussorgsky and Balakirev. Most pieces are recorded for the first time.

The Polish-born artist is acclaimed not only for the beauty of his voice, but also for his ardent commitment to each character he portrays. iolinist Arabella Steinbacher has firmly established herself as one of today’s leading violinists on the international concert scene and performs with the world’s major orchestras. Her most recent recording features the music of Richard Strauss including the Violin Concerto and transcriptions of lieder with conductor Lawrence Foster and the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne. Arabella Steinbacher has been recording exclusively for Pentatone since 2009. Among many international and national music prizes and nominations, she has been twice awarded the ECHO Klassik.
Alisa Weilerstein
T
he American-born cellist Alisa Weilerstein has attracted attention worldwide for her natural virtuosity, her intensity of playing, and the spontaneity and sensitivity of her interpretations. In 2010 she was invited by Daniel Barenboim and the Berlin Philharmonic to play the Elgar concerto in the orchestra’s annual Europakonzert, which that year took place in Oxford’s Sheldonian Theatre. She has appeared with all of the major orchestras throughout the United States and Europe with conductors including Pablo Heras-Casado, Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Mark Elder, Christoph Eschenbach, Paavo Järvi, Zubin Mehta, Matthias Pintscher, Simone Young and Jaap van Zweden. She has also appeared at major music festivals throughout the world as a soloist, recitalist and as a chamber musician.

A
nna Lucia Richter comes from a large family of musicians. As a long-standing member of the girls’ choir at Cologne Cathedral, she received singing lessons from the age of nine. Anna Lucia Richter has already won numerous international awards, including the prestigious Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. She is a particularly enthusiastic lied singer. Anna Lucia Richter has already built up an extensive repertoire and gives guest performances in all the major recital venues. She made her U.S. debut at the Carnegie Hall, singing her highly acclaimed and unusual Liederkreis programme of Eichendorff settings and improvisations.

anna-Elisabeth Müller studied with Rudolf Piernay, with whom she still closely collaborates. The multi-awardwinning soprano later fine-tuned her skills in masterclasses with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Julia Varady, Elly Ameling and Thomas Hampson. In 2014, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller achieved her international breakthrough at the Salzburg Opera Festival and, shortly afterwards, was distinguished by German magazine Opernwelt as Young Artist of the Year. The versatile singer is a regular guest on the concert stage and at major recital venues with her permanent piano partner Juliane Ruf.

ustavo Gimeno is Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg (OPL) and incoming Music Director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO). Since he became Music Director of the OPL in 2015, he has conducted the orchestra in a wide variety of concert formats, appearing with the orchestra in many of the most prestigious concert halls throughout Europe. This year, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg and its Music Director Gustavo Gimeno continue their acclaimed PENTATONE series of composer portraits that already featured monographs of Shostakovich, Bruckner, Ravel, Mahler, Stravinsky and Debussy. Born in Valencia, Gustavo Gimeno began his international conducting career in 2012 as assistant to Mariss Jansons, while he was a member of the Concertgebouworkest in Amsterdam. He also gained invaluable experience as assistant to Bernard Haitink and Claudio Abbado, who strongly supported and influenced him in many respects as a mentor.
