“… The play is memory. Being a memory play it is dimly lighted, it is sentimental, it is not realistic… “
Working on Thomas Lanier (Tennessee) Williams’ memory play about his time living in St Louis, Missouri, with his mother and sister has been a journey of discovery for all of us. Since its premiere in 1945, there have been many wonderful productions that focus on the sentiment and sadness of a very moving situation. But it occurred to us that, although we can construct our memories with great care and cunning, some memories have a way of breaking through the gilt. We’ve taken this opportunity to look at, suggest, and ponder some of the more tragic, as well as lively and amusing, aspects of their lives.
It’s believed that the play—which existed in several forms before this almostbut-not-quite final version—was written in reaction to his sister Rose receiving a lobotomy intended to cure her mental health issues, after therapy and other methods of the day proved of little value. (Laura is one of his on-stage presentations of her.) There are many theories regarding what exactly Rose’s diagnosis would be today. I have my thoughts but we have kept labels out of it and focused instead on the action of the play and the relationships of the characters.
A struggling family, who love and care for each other but can’t seem to communicate with each other or the outside world. A Gentleman Caller who offers hope, in varying ways, to all three of our Wingfields. An iconic situation from a centerpiece of the American Theatrical Canon.
Thank you for being here and for allowing us to share our vision with you.

Pentacle Theatre in Salem is located within the ancestral homelands of the Kalapuya, Yamhill, and Luckiamute people who have lived here since time immemorial. In the 1850s, these tribes were displaced by colonization and were eventually resettled on reservations. We celebrate and honor the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz members, their resilience, and their present and future right to this land.

The Glass Menagerie endures as one of the great plays in the history of the American stage, which no doubt explains why Pentacle has chosen to mount four different productions of this treasured piece of literature over its 70+ years of existence.
The first Pentacle staging of the script was in 1959, just five years after Pentacle’s inception. A look at the program for that production reveals some interesting information: it was the first of two Pentacle shows mounted at South Salem High School (our current building was still four years from completion), and its director, Glen Smith, also played Tom Wingfield, the male lead. Listed as a member of the set construction crew was future Oregon governor Norma Paulus!
The first revival of The Glass Menagerie was staged almost exactly 50 years ago in May of 1975, a production close to my heart since it was my first Pentacle stage appearance when I played Jim, the Gentleman Caller. That production featured lifetime member Pat Holman Schmidt, powerful in the role of Amanda Wingfield, and was staged, like many Pentacle productions, in the round.
Seventeen years later, in 1992, the play was revived a second time with the Wingfield family played by the exquisite cast of Tom Hewitt, Jo Dodge, and Cherie Ulmer (Tom, Amanda, and Laura respectively) under the direction of Robert Herzog assisted by Rob Sim. This talented group shares the distinction of being Pentacle lifetime members.
This brings us to the current Pentacle production, which will no doubt make some history of its own!
