Deb loved music and musicals, playing flute here at Pentacle and other venues. On every return, she expressed joy with the orchestra and all the crew. Novels, videos, plays, and especially mysteries were pure joy. Instrumental in enabling women to play in the OSU Pep bands in the early 70’s, she also co-founded the “Flute Cocktail” ensemble in Corvallis and chaired the flute section, the Corvallis Community Band. Their chairs for outdoor concerts are in memory of her. An alumnus of OSU, the music department asked her to stay in the bands and aid the flute section and on worldwide tours. She helped found the OSU Alumni Pep Band. Less well known, with both an MS in Library and Computer Science, her PNW library colleagues honored her for her leadership in actions that enable folks at participating universities to utilize networked resources. Deb (Amateur Radio Licensee) volunteered in the Benton County Emergency Services. While she can no longer be physically here with us, it is certain that she is delighted to help make this play possible for us all to enjoy. For a more detailed description of Deb’s life, visit collegeumc.com/wp-content/ uploads/2020/10/Debra-Marie-Bond-Hackleman-ver-9-25-20-to-post.pdf
Mike loved music, playing many instruments throughout his life. He helped many children develop an appreciation of music. He attended his first year of college in Oklahoma, then enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. After auditioning Mike was invited to become a saxophonist in the West Point Army Band. He played under many directors, including Arthur Fiedler of the Boston Pops, and studied flute in NYC. After the Army he attended the University of Oregon, graduating with a double major- Flute Performance and German. He returned to school getting his K-12 teaching certificate. He taught music and languages for many years at all K-12 levels. In 1983 Mike applied for and received a Fulbright Teacher Exchange to Sinsheim, (then West) Germany - close to Heidelberg. That was an outstanding year for us and our two daughters- broadening our horizons, making many friends, and traveling over much of Germany and Europe.
Music was a continual theme in Mike’s family life, conducting choirs, being in choirs (we often sang together), and teaching. A particular joy - singing rounds in the car when our daughters were little to make hours of travel go faster.
Loriann has been active in theater her whole life, both on stage and backstage. She has directed Dancing at Lughnasa at Pentacle Theatre and most recently directed shows at Keizer Homegrown Theatre and Conservatory, Village Home and other area theaters. She has also worked professionally in Denver and founded a community theater in Florida. When Loriann isn’t being a theater geek, she works for the Oregon Department of Education and teaches science at a private school in Beaverton. She is a multipassion-project person and is grateful to her theater family for all their support of her passion projects.
Welcome to a hilarious romp through Edwardian aristocracy! This musical farce is a delight to audiences - with a mixture of love AND murder, there’s something for everyone. A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder won the 2014 Tony awards for Best Musical, Direction, Costumes and Book...and I’m thrilled to bring this musical to the Pentacle stage.
— Loriann SchmidtYou might recognize Karen as a member of Pentacle Theatre's Hospitality Guild, which she and her husband, Chris, co-chaired for 20 years. Or you might recognize her from one of the more than 30 plays she has volunteered on as the director, assistant director, costumer, or one of the many other behind-the-scenes roles. Karen's most recent shows include director for Exit Laughing (2023), Vanya and Sonya and Masha and Spike (2016), and the last two musicals performed as fundraisers, The Little Mermaid (2019) and Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella (2020). She assistant directed and costumed Dancing at Lughnasa (2018) and Macbeth (2014). Karen most recently costumed a cast of six men and one woman in fur and sweaters in the heat of August of 2022 so they could accurately recreate the discovery of the South Pole in Terra Nova. Karen served on the Pentacle Theatre Governing Board, serving as Board President in 2015, and has volunteered many hours on several of Pentacle Theatre's committees. Karen recently retired from the State of Oregon after 32 years (well, sort of, she's still working until they hire her replacement). Karen loves to spend time with family, crafting, camping, sewing, making music and doing all the things that make her happy. She lives her life to the fullest and when her time comes, she will definitely exit laughing.
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder will be Carson’s third show with Pentacle Theatre, where he previously performed in Spamalot in the Ensemble and Mousetrap as Cristopher Wren.
Carson also helped as an Assistant Stage Manager for She Kills Monsters. Highlight roles outside of Pentacle Theatre include Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof (2019), Scar in Lion King (2018) and Lurch in Addams Family (2017), all at Central High School. Carson works full time for the Oregon Department of Education and spends his free time with his family and girlfriend in Salem.
Stephanie is excited to make her stage debut at Pentacle Theatre. She has been a part of the Salem-Keizer theater community since kindergarten. Favorite credits include Twisted (Funhouse Lounge), Cabaret, Into the Woods (Pentacle Theatre) and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare: Abridged (Keizer Homegrown Theatre). She is currently launching her voice acting career. Outside of theater, she is a seamstress, enjoys board games and snuggling her three "fluffy children." She appreciates Loriann for this opportunity and the support from her family and friends.
TH, FRI & SAT AT 7:30PM SUN AT 2:00PM
Kam is a new addition to the Pentacle family. After two years of high school theater, Kam decided to take a leap of faith going into junior year and audition for A Gentleman's Guide To Love And Murder. After taking part in various shows in high school, such as TRAP, Puffs and other student-directed one acts, Kam is ready to dive into the world of community theater to meet new faces and improve his acting. Outside of theater, Kam loves music, snowboarding, LARPing and spending time with friends and family.
Melissa is thrilled to be back for her second show at Pentacle Theatre. Past favorite roles include Portia in Something Rotten! (Albany Civic Theater), Evil Gabbi in She Kills Monsters (Pentacle Theatre) and Miss Honey in Matilda the Musical (Majestic Theatre). She has also enjoyed her time in other roles including Hattie Glick (Lucretia DeWitt) in My Fatal Valentine, Penny/Hodel/Ensemble in All Together Now! and ensemble in Mamma Mia! (all at Albany Civic Theater).
Originally from Miami, Florida, Melissa is loving life in the Willamette Valley with her husband and two cats, Momo and Rayla. Beyond working as a software QA engineer, she enjoys going on hikes, tidepooling, foraging mushrooms, walking dogs, playing video/board games, the fall/Halloween season, watching movies and going to Renaissance and Scottish festivals.

Tom
Kevin has been involved in community theater since 2007, both at Pentacle and at Gallery Theater in McMinnville. His favorite role was Lurch in Addams Family: the Musical, which he played at both Pentacle and Gallery. Other fun roles include Dick Deadeye in HMS Pinafore and Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar. Though partial to musicals and comedies, he got to challenge himself in a dramatic role as Bob Ewell in Gallery Theater's To Kill a Mockingbird.
A retired government researcher, he has two grandchildren who help keep things interesting along with various musical activities, such as playing bass guitar in a country band. He's thankful to have the support of his wonderful wife, Libby.
Sarah Hansen
Sarah Hansen is delighted to be a part of her third Pentacle Theatre production. A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder is one of her favorite pieces of contemporary
musical theater, and she is excited to play Miss Evangeline Barley, et al. in this show. Previously, Sarah performed in Mary Poppins and Urinetown at Pentacle Theatre. Around Salem, she has been seen in Blooming Valley Theatrics’ premiere production of Waiting: A New Musical, where she played Roxy. Sarah has also performed as a featured soloist with Salem Theatre Network’s production of All Together Now! as well as Enlightened Theatrics’ productions of Cinematastic: The Music of the Movies and the Broadway Dreams Showcase. She played Grace Farrell in Annie at Enlightened Theatrics, and you can catch her playing Ladybug in their winter 2023 production of James and the Giant Peach. Off stage, Sarah enjoys going on walks and kayaking with her dog, playing D&D with friends and restoring/redesigning old furniture.
Deb Nelson
Miss Shingle & others
Deb is proud to be appearing in her first Pentacle Theatre production alongside an amazingly talented and committed cast of fellow actors - who are also so much fun to be around. Past theater productions were on the Central Coast of California and included Sound of Music, South Pacific, Pirates of Penzance and Man of La Mancha. She majored in voice at Cal State Fullerton and toured Europe with an acapella group affiliated with Allan Hancock College on several tours. Recently, Deb was in the Book of Will and shared the stage with her favorite
castmate and partner-in-life, her husband, with Keizer Homegrown Theater and Pygmalion at Spotlight Community Theater.
She wants to thank her husband for “holding down the farm” while she spent many hours rehearsing, leaving him to carry the heavy load, and the amazing team of directors of this show for letting a new kid join this amazing theater group.
Lance Nuttman is an active member of several Oregon theater companies. He was last seen in A Little Night Music with Northwest Broadway Productions at the Elsinore Theater. He is thrilled to return to the Pentacle stage, appearing previously in Fiddler on the Roof, Rent, A Streetcar Named Desire, 1984 and Jesus Christ Superstar. Other memorable performances include Little Shop of Horrors, The God Game and Beauty and the Beast (Gallery Theater), The Rocky Horror Show (Enlightened Theatrics), True West and Novecento (The Verona Studio), and Equivocation (Struts & Frets). He directed Frost/Nixon and The Graduate and will direct next season’s Fool for Love at Gallery Theater. He has served as sound designer for several productions, and was honoured with BroadwayWorld Portland's Best Performer In A Play for the 2021 stage production of Alessandro Baricco's monologue Novecento at Gallery Theater. He lives in McMinnville with his awardwinning wife and creative partner Marla.
Ray is a veteran of 35 stage productions over the past 30 years, eight of which have been at Pentacle. He has done shows at Albany Civic Theater, Chemeketa Community College, Majestic Theater in Corvallis and Keizer Homegrown Theater. Ray has retired as Director of Career Services from Chemeketa Community College where he is known as the “Voice of Chemeketa Graduation,” having introduced thousands of graduates at annual ceremonies for years. He lives in Salem with his wife Antonia. He enjoys hiking, dog walking and church choral music.
Every five years the Pentacle Theatre Governing Board honors as Lifetime Members five people who have been active in Pentacle Theatre for at least 20 years. We also remember fondly those Lifetime Members who are no longer with us.

Pentacle Theatre would not be possible without the support of the following grantors:
Welcome to Pentacle!
Did you know that almost everyone you see running this place is a volunteer? Your ushers, bartenders and all the very talented actors you see on stage tonight are all volunteers!
I volunteered here for the first time almost exactly ten years ago, and honestly...it was kind of an accident. An ensemble member of The Secret Garden had dropped out and I was asked to fill in late in production as a favor to the director, a close family friend. It was just a whim, and yet the friendships I formed during my first show at Pentacle had me immediately hooked.
And here I am, ten years later.
There are so many reasons to volunteer at Pentacle. Maybe you’ve always wanted to act in a play, maybe you have a creative skill you’d like to share behind the scenes, or maybe you’d like to attend a workshop and learn something new just for fun! I have enjoyed many years here of making friends, making memories, and making art, and it all started because a friend asked me if I was free.
So...are you?

Pentacle Theatre in Salem is located within the ancestral homelands of the Kalapuya, Yamhill, and Luckiamute people who had lived here since time immemorial.
In the 1850s, these tribes were displaced by colonization and were eventually resettled on reservations. We celebrate and honor the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz members, their resilience and their present and future right to this land.
Ticket sales alone do not cover the cost of our productions. Your membership and donation help make this theater possible. Thank you! This list represents gifts between 1/1/2021 and 09/27/2023.
