Welcome to Pentacle Theatre's production of Hairspray!
If you came expecting to see a period musical from a bygone era, I am sorry to disappoint you. Yes, Hairspray is a period piece, set in 1962 Baltimore. The hair, costumes and language will most definitely be period. Sadly, the content is more relevant than ever.
The issues faced by the characters in this show continue to be alive and well in America. Our show offers very different perspectives on racism and discrimination. Tracy just doesn't understand why dancing on the Corny Collins show can't be for everyone every day, regardless. Edna fears social judgment based on her weight and worries that her daughter may face the same. Motormouth Maybelle stands firm in her fight, regardless of the backlash. Velma and Prudy remain stuck in their thinking and seem unwilling to change. For me, it's the Pennys of the world who can often make the biggest difference. Raised by an overtly racist mother, Penny, who is often a bit "spacy," is able to think for herself and find love with someone she knows her mother may not accept. Penny breaks the cycle. For every Tracy and Motormouth we have fighting for equality, we need 10 Pennys out there, casting aside their families’ skewed view of the world and having an open heart regardless of race, gender, ideology, body size, and culture.
Theater exists as a mirror we can hold up and view society behind a fourth wall. I am sure you will see representations of people you know in your life. Hopefully you will take with you the strength of Tracy, Motormouth, Seaweed, Penny, and Edna. That you'll no longer be a bystander to the Velmas and Prudys in the world. I desperately want to live in a world where the message of Hairspray is truly a historical period piece. We are not there yet, we won’t get there Without Love.
Robert Salberg Director
Pentacle Theatre in Salem is located within the ancestral homelands of the Kalapuya, Yamhill, and Luckiamute people who have lived here since time immemorial. In the 1850s, these tribes were displaced by colonization and were eventually resettled on reservations. We celebrate and honor the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz members, their resilience, and their present and future right to this land.

Lou Ann
Eliza Tooley (she/her) is a young performer who’s been lucky to explore a variety of roles on stage. She appeared as Amaryllis in The Music Man (Keizer Homegrown Theatre, 2022), Young Anna in Frozen Jr. (Sprague High School, 2023), and joined the teen ensemble in Footloose the Musical (Pentacle Theatre, 2024). She studies many forms of dance at City Dance Theatre and works on vocal performance with the incredible Kara Quello. Whether it’s learning harmonies or keeping jazz hands in sync, Eliza enjoys every part of the rehearsal process and the chance to grow with each production. Offstage, she’s usually humming a show tune, choreographing in the kitchen, or finding creative ways to turn everyday life into a musical—just for fun (and occasionally for dramatic effect).
Corny Collins
This is Noah’s fifth show at Pentacle, with previous credits as Zacky Price in Big Fish, Cowboy Bob in Footloose, Sheldon in The Prom, and the Mad Hatter in Shrek the Musical. When he’s not on stage serving up a heaping platter of razzle and dazzle, you can find him working as a production
engineer in Corvallis. You can also often find him at home enjoying a nice iced coffee with his amazing wife/bestie Molly, and their two tabby cats: Henry and Jamie.
Brenda Amelia is a sophomore at Willamette University, where she majors in Civic Communication & Media Studies, minors in Arts, Technology, & Multimedia, and is a member of the university Chamber Choir. Amelia is a former Children’s Educational Theatre student and Teaching Assistant, having spent her last ten summers there. Hairspray is Amelia’s second Pentacle production, her first being Seussical: The Musical! in 2017, alongside her dad and her identical twin sister. Amelia is a graduate and thespian of Dallas High School, where some of her favorite roles include: Elizabeth Bennet (Pride & Prejudice), Cinderella (Cinderella), Dorothy (The Wizard of Oz), and Ma (The Storm in the Barn). Amelia has also had the opportunity to perform at the 2023 Oregon Thespian State Conference in her troupe’s Mainstage Showcase production of The Yellow Boat, and with the Youth Ensemble at Struts & Frets Theatre Company. Amelia is so excited to be a part of this production!
Grant Grover is 16 years old and has been playing drums since the age of four. He began with rock and metal music before expanding into other genres over time. He performed in his high school’s pit orchestra for Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, and this marks his first production with Pentacle Theatre. Outside of theater, Grant has spent the past nine years performing with RiverCity Rockstar Academy, playing at a variety of venues including at the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland, Oregon.
Sophie Kasner began playing flute in the fifth grade and piano two years later. Before graduating as part of the South Salem class of 2025, she was involved in high school wind ensemble, marching band, jazz band, symphony orchestra and rock band. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Music Education at the University of Oregon.
Kat has been a local music educator and performer for more than 20 years. Her primary instrument is clarinet, but she loves to perform on all woodwind instruments and has even played percussion a few times. Kat serves as the Music and Drama program associate in Salem-Keizer where she gets to support students and teachers every day. She is super thankful for her husband and their three kids for giving her the time to perform in pit orchestras—one of her absolute favorite things to do!
Born in 2007 to Karl and Jessica Mielke along with his siblings Ava and Finn. Jacob first started playing bass his freshman year of high school. Since then Jacob has been playing all sorts of different types of music including: jazz, rock, and classical in order to vary his portfolio in his musical journey. Jacob is currently a member of the RiverCity Royals and is enrolled at U of O for fall of 2025, entering into the music theory program.
Robert Rice discovered his passion for music at the age of seven with his first clarinet. Classically trained through middle and high school, Robert pursued jazz studies, which introduced him to a broad spectrum of musical styles. In college, he explored big band jazz and Latin music, performing with the Orquestra Brasil. Robert has been a local performing musician for over 20 years and his current project outside of Hairspray is with the band Boundless Joy.

Hairspray marks the first Pentacle production to receive funding through a new endowment recently established through the generosity of the Brown-Jolivette family. Appropriately called Stage4All, this endowment, according to its Pentacle charter, is designed to “provide opportunities for the stories of underrepresented minorities and marginalized people to be heard and celebrated onstage to enrich performing arts in the Salem area and foster an inclusive and empathetic community.” These are truly impressive goals and Hairspray, with its themes relating to race and diversity, is an appropriate first recipient.
The Brown-Jolivette Endowment and its associated Stage4All account have been initially funded with just over $11,000 in contributions, with a goal of reaching a threshold amount of $25,000. At that point, each year a production or special project that embraces the Endowment’s goals would be designated to receive some allotment of funding. Pentacle’s Governing Board of Directors would be charged with taking into consideration possible productions that qualify as promoting inclusivity and diversity in casting and subject matter.
If you are inspired to support this endeavor, visit the Pentacle Theatre web page (https:// pentacletheatre.org) and click on the “One Time Donations” tab at the top of the page. You will arrive at a screen where contributions can be made to the Brown-Jolivette Stage4All Endowment Fund.
Pentacle’s Governing Board is excited to see how the establishment of this endowment will have a positive impact on the diversity reflected in the shows we place on our season as well as the audiences who will benefit from seeing them!
