family businesses supporting Pentacle and our community."

Pentacle Theatre is grateful to The Lulay Group for their generous sponsorship, the contribution of a much-needed truck to support our Pentacle community.

A Comedy of Tenors is a fast-paced, ridiculously passionate, farce about intensely passionate people.

Tito Merelli and his wife, Maria, wild and volatile Italians, face a crisis in their lives when Tito accuses Maria of having an affair. Of course, Tito is mistaken, but his fears cause an unlikely series of events for them both and for everyone around them.

Ken Ludwig has been popular with Pentacle audiences for many years, and in A Comedy of Tenors, he does not disappoint. I am very proud of everyone involved in this production. Actors, stage crew, technicians, and costumers — all have worked hard to make this a fun evening for our audiences. A very special thanks to my wonderful Assistant Director, Beverly Freitas, who has gone several extra miles to help bring this show to fruition.

When asked on his deathbed if dying was hard, Edmund Gwenn, famous for playing Kris Kringle in Miracle on 34th Street, is attributed with replying, "Not nearly as difficult as playing comedy." Our team has put in a lot of hard work and a great deal of laughter to be able to bring this delightful show to the stage. We all hope you enjoy it and have a lovely evening. “Ha Haa!”

LAND ACKNOWLEDGMENT

Pentacle Theatre in Salem is located within the ancestral homelands of the Kalapuya, Yamhill, and Luckiamute people who have lived here since time immemorial. In the 1850s, these tribes were displaced by colonization and were eventually resettled on reservations. We celebrate and honor the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and the Confederated Tribes of Siletz members, their resilience, and their present and future right to this land.

Maya is thrilled to be making her Pentacle Theatre acting debut in A Comedy of Tenors! She spent her early years performing in community, school, and college productions before stepping away from the stage for a time. In 2021, she joined Jo Dodge’s Acting Workshop at Pentacle, which rekindled her love of theater and connected her with a wonderful group of people. Since then, Maya has contributed backstage on Rabbit Hole, Brighton Beach Memoirs, and Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley, and served on the script reading committee for the 2026 season. She is deeply grateful to her mentor and friend, Jo Dodge, to everyone she’s met through the Acting Workshop, and to her partner for his constant encouragement and support. Offstage, Maya works as a business process consultant and enjoys horror movies, visiting museums, and traveling.

Ken Hermens Tito Merelli/Beppo

Ken is celebrating 50 years of involvement in what he considers to be his second home, Pentacle Theatre. During that time, he has acted or sung in over 70 productions, most recently appearing as Jonathan Brewster in this season's Arsenic and Old Lace. A huge fan of farce and comedy in general, some of Ken's favorite roles at Pentacle include Dennis in The Play That Goes Wrong, Bob in How the Other Half Loves, Julian in Communicating Doors, Brother Boy in Sordid Lives, and Felix in The Owl and the Pussycat. More of a baritone than a tenor, Ken has appeared in many musicals, including Godspell, Grease, Man of La Mancha, Les Misérables, and Mamma Mia. A Pentacle Lifetime member since 1999, Ken is currently completing a third term as President of the Theatre's Governing Board. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis, cheering on his amazing trivia team, and marveling at his precocious grandson, Mack. He lives in West Salem with his fiancé, Stephen, and their faithful canines, Casey and Prince Charming.

Mid-Valley Theatre Network is an alliance of theatre organizations with the mission of supporting, promoting, and uniting theatre communities in and around the Mid-Willamette Valley

The importance of volunteers to the continued success of Pentacle Theatre has been a subject I have talked about in previous iterations of these President Corners, but that point has been driven home to me recently when I was added to the text thread of our Facilities Committee. In a typical day, there may be thirty or more text messages shared among this hard-working group, covering such diverse topics as broken tree limbs, septic tank issues, deck construction progress, recycling efforts, and a myriad of other issues that must be addressed to maintain our 60+-year-old facility.

Last month, at our annual Volunteer Picnic, two members of our Facilities Committee received awards acknowledging their tireless efforts on behalf of the theater. Michael McIntosh was honored as Volunteer of the Year—it would take two or three of these columns to list everything he has done to keep our building secure, safe, functional, and well-lit! Receiving the President’s Award was Liz Rogers, co-chair of our facilities group, who has worked closely with our deck reconstruction contractor (the amazing Wade King), and who is ever-present at the Theatre creating projections and sound that enhance the quality of our productions. A shout-out, as well, to other Facilities Committee members Chris McCarty, Tony Zandol, and Rob Sim, as well as Board Liaison Noah Vanderburgh and our Technical Director Chris Benham. Their daily contributions keep our theater running!

Also honored at the Volunteer event were Technical Director Award winner Scott Ramp, our go-to source for set beautification, prosthetics, and unusual properties, and Executive Director Award winner Jeff Witt, who headed up our Script Reading Committee and donated his time and resources to catering our opening night after-show parties. Congratulations to all!
