I didn’t plan to disappear.

At least, not in the way it happened. When I hired Lisa Player (I miss her already!) as editor, it was so that I could quit spreading myself too thin and so I could focus on being publisher — the person quietly behind the scenes setting the goals and steering Bella forward.

But then, life happened, and I stepped back. Not gone, exactly, but pulled away enough that it felt like I had stepped out of the room.

Life has a way of doing that. One minute you’re juggling responsibilities with confidence, and the next you’re realizing that something has to give. For me, that something was visibility. I kept the wheels turning where I could, but I wasn’t present in the way I expect of myself — and in the way this role deserves. I was doing what had to be done to keep myself going and that was all that I could handle for quite a while.

But now, let me say this plainly: I’m back.

Not in a dramatic, trumpets-blaring way. Just grounded, refocused and ready to move forward. Sometimes stepping away, even unintentionally, sharpens your perspective. Distance has a way of revealing what matters most and what was simply noise. I also still have many ups and downs and am just trying to do the best I can. I’ve learned not to beat myself up, though that can be an ongoing challenge.

Being an editor and a publisher isn’t just about correcting grammar or trimming copy. It’s about stewardship. It’s about holding space for other people’s voices while knowing when to step in and when to step back. It’s about responsibility — to readers, to writers and to the larger community we serve. Being away reminded me how much that responsibility means to me.

The timing feels fitting. A new year has a way of inviting reflection, whether we ask for it or not. January always arrives with a quiet insistence: Look back. Take stock. Decide what comes next.

I’ve never been particularly interested in grand resolutions. Life is too unpredictable for rigid promises. What I do believe in is intention. Small, thoughtful course corrections that add up over time. This year, my intention is simple: to be present.

Presence looks like answering the email instead of flagging it for later. It looks like checking in, not just checking off. It looks like listening more closely — to pitches, to feedback, to the subtle shifts happening around us.

A new year also brings new opportunity, especially in storytelling. There are voices that haven’t been heard enough. Stories that deserve more space than they’ve been given.

Perspectives that challenge, inform and maybe even make us a little uncomfortable — in the best way. I want this publication to continue leaning into that.

Looking ahead, I’m excited about what we can build. Not just in terms of content, but in connection. Community isn’t something that happens automatically; it’s cultivated. It requires consistency and care. It requires showing up, even when it’s easier not to.

If my “absence” taught me anything, it’s that showing up matters. Even imperfectly. Even quietly. Especially when things feel uncertain. Being there matters much more than being perfectly made up.

I also want to acknowledge the grace extended during my difficult times. That grace matters more than people realize. It’s easy to measure productivity and output; it’s harder — and more important — to recognize humanity. I don’t take that lightly.

As we move forward, I hope this year feels less about pressure and more about possibility.

Less about keeping up and more about moving with purpose. There is room to try new things, to rethink old habits and to allow ourselves to grow without demanding perfection.

And — drumroll, please! — we are entering Bella’s 20th year!! Twenty years of supporting the women of Pensacola and sharing their many inspiring stories. I am so excited and proud of this accomplishment and I’m proud of the entire Bella team who are the reason we are still here.

Thank you for staying, for reading and for trusting this space. I’m here, looking ahead, ready to do the work.

Once upon a time, she had a high-pressure career, but now she has a pension and is a freelance writer for Bella Magazine. Justine Williams Roper, writer Justine Williams Roper is a doctor of physical therapy, personal trainer, and speaker from Pensacola. Elizabeth Meyer, art director Elizabeth Meyer spent her early career as a designer and design director at newspapers across the country. She is currently an adjunct instructor and director of The McKinley Avenue Agency at Ball State University. Betsy was born in Pensacola while her father was in the U.S. Navy.

Chelsea Owens, writer Chelsea Owens grew up in Gulf Breeze and received degrees in communications and art from the University of West Florida. She has a lifelong passion for style and art, and over 10 years of social media and marketing experience. She is also a pilates instructor who enjoys both staying busy and relaxing at the beach.

Cynthia Reeves, writer Long-time writer Cynthia Reeves spent 25 years as a broadcast journalist in the southeast, including 10 years as a reporter at WEAR-TV in Pensacola. As a high school teacher of journalism, TV production and English, she passed her skills down to young writers. She also served as District 1 director for the Florida Scholastic Press Association.

Ring in the new year with rich, saturated color pops — and pair them with anything your heart desires. Vogue reports that curious color combinations are a trend for 2026.

“This winter we are seeing fashion trends like pops of color, textured sweaters and high-rise denim,” said Zoe Babcock of Envie Boutique on Pensacola Beach.

“Colors like red, green and brown are especially popular this season, along with animal prints that can add a fun pop to any outfit,” she said.

Lingerie dressing is having a moment — think slip skirts and dresses. For the edgy fashionista, feel free to pair them with contrasting vibes such as leather or cashmere.

When choosing a dress or skirt length, short is not where it’s at currently.

“Some of the different cuts we are loving this season are midi and maxi skirts,” Babcock said.

For the latest looks in accessories, choose ballet flats and layered necklaces.

Kayla Conway From the coast to the countryside, the diversity of Kayla Conway’s hometown is woven into her being.

“I was born and raised right here in Pensacola. My roots stretch all across the area from the beach to Molino. I truly feel connected to every corner of our beautiful city,” said the 2020 Tate High School graduate.

“Like many people that year, I was still finding my path after graduation, so I explored a little bit of everything — from Airbnb management and home design to earning my personal training license while working at a fitness gym.”

Now Conway is creating her work life one bloom at a time.

“In 2021, I decided to take a leap of faith and chase something more personal and creative, and that’s when Pensaflora Blooms was born. It’s a mother-daughter floral business that my mom and I started out of our little red VW flower truck. What began as a small dream has turned into one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. We’ve traveled all over the Gulf Coast with our truck, creating everything from everyday bouquets to extravagant event installations. From weddings and fundraisers to community celebrations, it’s been such a joy to share our blooms and bring a little extra beauty to the people and places that make this area so special.”

When she’s not surrounded by flowers, Conway is usually catching up with friends and family — on the water, at local festivals or with a big celebration. “My family and I never miss a chance to get together or throw a good party.”

Movement in diverse forms ranks high on Conway’s list.

“I love staying active, whether it’s Pilates, weight training or trying something new like skimboarding or horseback riding.”

All the while, she’s embracing her beloved town.

“Pensacola will always be home, and I’m so grateful to be part of such a vibrant Gulf Coast community that continues to inspire me every single day.”

Winter-proof your skin From swapping powder for cream to rethinking your shower temperature, small changes to your routine can protect your skin when cold, dry air strikes

As humidity drops and the cool, dry air takes a toll on your skin, switching a few things in your daily skin care routine can help relieve unfavorable symptoms. The key to balancing your pH is retaining the oils naturally produced in your skin and hair.

Many factors can cause dry skin. Sitting by fires, wind, dry air, indoor heat that pulls moisture from the air and hot water can all cause the condition of the skin to drastically change.

As temperatures fall, keep indoor air on the cool side and use warm — not hot — water for showers and for washing hair and hands. Sensitive skin and eczema can easily flare up with steamy showers and heaters pumping out hot, dry air.

Bar soap can be drying to sensitive skin. It’s best to use creamy body wash and body lotions that are free of fragrance and alcohol during the colder months.

Switch some of your powder makeup products to creamy options. Liquid foundation, cream blush and cream eyeshadow are a must if your skin is irritated and dry. Always use hydrating sprays before and after makeup to lock in a dewy finish.

After showers, pat dry and apply moisturizer to your entire body. Don’t forget the areas where skin is thicker, such as your palms and the bottoms of your feet. Some products you use during the hot months can be too harsh for dehydrated skin in the winter. Certain laundry detergents and dish soaps may irritate skin as well.

If you struggle with a dry scalp, use an oil treatment and massage it into the scalp a couple of times a week to relieve tightness and itching. This can improve both scalp comfort and hair condition.

Overwashing your face and body can easily dry out your skin.

If you wash your face at night, simply rinse, pat dry and reapply moisturizer in the morning. The natural oils your skin produces overnight can help maintain balance throughout the day. Don’t forget to apply a hydrating balm to your lips at night to repair dry, cracked skin.

Take a break from exfoliants, retinol and alpha hydroxy acids if you use them regularly. Add them back slowly as irritation lessens. Key ingredients to look for in lotions and moisturizers for dry skin include ceramides, glycerin, jojoba oil, shea butter, mineral oil and lanolin.

Hydration is key. Increase your daily water intake, use a humidifier at night if needed and take a few extra minutes each day to moisturize your skin from head to toe.

A champion for human trafficking survivors

Kimberly Adams is an attorney whose dedication to fighting human trafficking and child exploitation has established her as a preeminent legal champion for the vulnerable. Her commitment to justice stems from humble roots in Warrington, Florida, and has culminated in a distinguished career. She has earned the prestigious Clarence Darrow Award from Mass Torts Made Perfect, honoring her work against child exploitation, human trafficking and forced prostitution. She is also a 2025 “Living the Dream” honoree in recognition of her work to preserve the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

FROM WARRINGTON TO LEGAL ADVOCACY

Adams’s journey began on the west side of Pensacola, where she attended Warrington Middle School.

Reflecting on her youth, she emphasizes the importance of a strong family foundation and the resilience required to seek out and fight for opportunities when they are not readily present. Her determination led her to the legal field, driven by an innate “passion for helping others.”

At just 18 years old, Adams began her career at the law firm of Levin Papantonio, where she has spent two decades. She rose through the ranks, eventually becoming a partner and serving as the firm’s general counsel and on the executive committee. This demanding work, which included a full caseload of maritime, personal injury and product liability cases, was her life for 20 years. In a recent, reflective move, Adams has stepped back, prioritizing time with her two young children while continuing to work on a limited number of important cases.

A TIRELESS FIGHT AGAINST EXPLOITATION

Adams’s foray into human trafficking litigation began unexpectedly when she and her colleague discussed a new statute. True to her nature, she quickly became “all in” on the issue, taking on a full human trafficking caseload in addition to her existing work. The deeper she delved, the more her eyes were opened to the realities of

child exploitation, forced prostitution and trafficking.

She quickly became a pioneering force. When she started this litigation in 2019, few lawyers were tackling the issue from the civil side. Adams became instrumental in using specific federal statutes and arguing novel legal interpretations to hold exploiters and complicit businesses accountable. She loves the intellectual challenge of building on existing law, but her work is fueled by a deep commitment to her clients — survivors who often distrust the legal system and are judged by society.

“I just couldn’t abandon those relationships, so I just worked, worked, worked. That’s how I found my way there and started to love what I was doing,” Adams said.

She stresses that this work requires a village of advocates, social workers and talented lawyers, acknowledging the emotional toll of reading harrowing medical and arrest reports. Adams highlights the subtle nature of trafficking, noting that it rarely involves a violent, immediate abduction. Instead, it often stems from vulnerabilities like child abuse or grooming through online exploitation. She advocates for corporate responsibility, believing businesses should protect children whose adolescent brains are not developed enough to understand long-term harm.

A CALL FOR COMPASSION AND COMMUNITY

Adams is currently working on several major cases, including a notable case in Las Vegas. Looking ahead, she has shifted some of her advocacy to championing youth sports, believing that providing safe, structured outlets is crucial for keeping children off their phones and out of harm’s way.

Her message to the public is one of compassion: “Check your perceptions and do not be so quick to judge the choices of others.” She reminds us that “perception is not always reality” and that victims often lack the resources, support and exit ramps needed to escape. Inspired by the words of Martin Luther King Jr., “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter,” she continues to fight against the silence.

Those with a heart for helping others have an opportunity to learn more about Gulf Breeze Will Do this month.

The philanthropy group, created in 2014, kicks off its membership drive each January with a target of 200 members.

Gulf Breeze Will Do supports nonprofits and initiatives in the 32561 and 32563 ZIP codes — Gulf Breeze, much of South Santa Rosa County and Pensacola Beach.

Current members host socials in local restaurants and community centers. Look for the locations listed in Gulf Breeze News and on the organization’s social media pages, including Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. President Leslie Perino says the socials are casual and informative — a great way to spend time with like-minded women who want to make a difference in their community.

“We’re encouraging people to come hear our story.

We bring in one of our grant recipients so they can learn what they’re doing or what they did with their grant,” Perino said.

Gulf Breeze Will Do offers grants of $1,000 to $10,000 in five categories: art, recreation and sports; environment; education; hardship support services;

The annual membership fee is $250. Women 28 years of age and younger can become voting members for a discounted annual fee of $150.

The board of directors is comprised of volunteers, and 100% of the dues are distributed back to the community in the form of grants.

Perino encourages women to check out the social events and bring a friend. There is no obligation to join.

“It’s a nice time to spend an evening together and feel good about doing something good for your community,” she said.

As we embark on a new year, improving current relationships or developing new ones often takes center stage. We may strive to improve our marriages, strengthen friendships and partnerships, get along better with co-workers or maybe the goal is to love ourselves more authentically.

Just making a list of resolutions doesn’t cut it. Often, we need guidance from someone who knows more than we do: a therapist, counselor or life coach.

RELATIONSHIP TRAINING Relationship trainer Julie Nise compares reinventing a relationship to learning how to be a better cook. If all you have is the same set of old recipes, you’re not going to grow. Couples who are struggling need a fresh approach and a new set of skills.

Nise believes relationships need “fresh food,” or new tools that can be implemented and put into action She says the old adage that “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results” rings true because most couples repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

“Keep doing the same thing and you keep getting the same result.”

Traditional therapy often focuses on a person’s past, but may not make a marriage or relationship stronger.

If a traditional therapy route doesn’t seem to be helping, she recommends a training program.

“Analyzing and labeling the past doesn’t fix anything. That’s like rubbing your nose in all the stuff that didn’t work — like your pain and suffering.”

At Bayside Marriage Counseling in Pensacola, she offers relationship programs that are “advanced, resultsoriented and no-nonsense.” As a trainer for twenty years, she’s seen results with thousands of couples.

GENIUS THINKING

Nise uses a term she calls “genius thinking” to help couples at a crossroads. The idea is to think about the good things that could be instead of dredging up old arguments.

She encourages a new thought process: “I don’t want to think about something in a negative way; I want to think there should be a positive.”

Some examples of tools she uses in training are: • Problem argument resolution Mistake: always trying to be right Fix: start with solutions only • Forgiveness Mistake: carrying around resentment Fix: emotionally let go once the issue is resolved • Letting go of the past Mistake: seeing the past only as a learning experience Fix: let go of guilt and shame • Understanding the opposite sex Mistake: using the same skill set you had in high school Fix: learn to appreciate differences and work as a team Nise often observes that the people who do best in relationships grew up in situations where teamwork was celebrated. People who find themselves thinking and working more independently may struggle, but there is hope.

BEING VULNERABLE Angie Randall of Positively Persistent Life Coaching in Pensacola believes vulnerability is key to any relationship.

“When we feel unable to truly open up to new people and new experiences, it greatly inhibits our lives moving forward.”

Without vulnerability, a person can become isolated. She says isolation is a leading cause of depression and suicide.

We all need to have and improve interpersonal relationships.

“We’re created to need interpersonal relationships the same way we need air.”

Interpersonal relationships are defined as any type of relationship, whether it be a romantic relationship, a friendship or a working relationship.

In addition to thinking about improving those relationships in the new year, Randall thinks we can also look inward and work on fine-tuning our relationship with ourselves.

“We have to realize our own shortcomings to create a path to move forward.” She believes hiring a life coach can help an individual with that emotional growth.

“Emotional growth comes from saying — you know what, I’m really struggling with vulnerability, or I really have some trust issues. I realize this is going to be a problem for me, so I’m going to be proactive and get some help with that.”

PRACTICE GRATEFULNESS Randall says a simple step she practices in her own life is to think about what she’s grateful for first thing each morning.

“I know it sounds cliché — people say it constantly — but it works. You can’t think negatively when you’re doing something positive, so be grateful for what you have. Be thankful for another day and for the ability to work and support yourself.”

Randall’s advice is to find a way to practice gratefulness that works for you. It only takes a few seconds. Some people like to journal; others pray.

“I’ve heard of people using a phone’s recording app to capture and transcribe their thoughts so they can review them later.”

acknowledges there are some people whom you simply cannot depend on for support and must set boundaries with or walk away from.

“I generally tell people when you’re trying to better yourself, the people that you surround yourself with are essential in whether or not you succeed in your goals.” The first thing is to decide who you want to let in.

“For example, you may have negative, toxic family members you know won’t be supportive before you even speak. Maybe they laugh at you or roll their eyes. Those are people I’m not going to include in my plan.”

Hard as it is, she says you may have to keep those people at a distance.

“You can love people from a distance. I choose who to share my most intimate desires with and only open up to those who are going to be supportive. I will inform them if they cross a boundary of mine and put distance between us.”

Randall says another step to improving relationships reaches beyond personal growth and extends to others.

“Sit down and think about the individuals that you want to create a stronger bond with and build on that.”

For example, let’s say you want to improve your relationship with a coworker. Her advice: Look into what makes that person tick and ask yourself, “Can I authentically give this person what they need?” Just be sure to be authentic, not fake. If they thrive on positive emails from the boss, maybe you can offer positive affirmations.

Randall says, “If the answer is, they like hugs, but I don’t know if I can do that, then the next question is, what can I do?”

UNDERSTAND COMMUNICATION STYLES

In any relationship, whether with a co-worker or a romantic relationship, Randall says recognizing communication styles is vital.

“Knowing that about your spouse is also key because your communication style may be very different from theirs.”

She adds that your attachment style can be very different as well.

“If you approach them in a way that makes them defensive and unwilling to talk, it will block any chance of a

communication breakthrough.” This is where it is important to understand their love language.

She recommends reading, among other books, the classic relationship book by Gary Chapman, “The Five Love Languages: Secrets to Love That Lasts.”

The goal is to approach relationships in a mature way, so you can have meaningful conversations.

“Many people enter a relationship under the influence of the oxytocin ‘love bug.’ They believe they’re in love without truly knowing their partner.”

Randall cautions, “When you feel like you’re giving too much—or like you’re the only one giving—that’s a big red flag that a conversation is needed. Whether it’s a one-on-one talk, counseling, or another approach, it still needs to be addressed because it won’t just go away.”

SEEK HAPPINESS

Nise believes the key to redefining relationships is to do what you can to make the other person happy, and that means a coordinated effort to learn what makes a spouse, partner or friend feel good and acting on it.

For example, if you want to get closer to a friend who loves ice cream, invite them out to an ice cream parlor. Use that understanding of them to gently get them out of the house and into a conversation, then work on the relationship.

She believes putting forth this extra effort gives you leverage. If you understand the person, “You’re doing the highest and best good for the person and relationship ... doing whatever you can to make the other person happy.”

In summary, no matter what type of relationship, find a way to make an authentic, loving connection.

Equality Florida is bringing a pivotal fundraising event to Pensacola for the first time, the Pensacola Brunch, aimed at bolstering the organization’s statewide fight for LGBTQ equality and celebrating local advocates. The event will be held on Sunday, March 1, at the Pensacola Little Theatre.

Nadine Smith, co-founder of Equality Florida, emphasizes the critical timing of this event, noting that “Florida has been the testing ground for strategies that seek to divide and instill fear.”

The organization’s goal is to ensure that “every single part of our state is engaged” in pushing back against censorship, erasure and anti-LGBTQ legislation. Proceeds from the brunch will directly fund the comprehensive work of Equality Florida, which includes the programs Safe and Healthy Schools, Parenting with Pride, Health Equity, Public Policy and Transgender Equality. This work ranges from supporting inclusive legislation in Tallahassee to grassroots organizing for local human rights ordinances and ensuring safe spaces in schools.

Pensacola Brunch will serve as a moment to celebrate two local leaders whose advocacy and commitment embody the spirit of the organization’s work. Jeff Nall will be presented with the Voice for Equality Award. This is the organization’s highest award given in each community, recognizing an individual who, with courage and passion, moves the LGBTQ community closer to full equality. Pensacola Opera

creating mainstage memories

Pensacola Opera is gearing up to wow Northwest Floridians with two very different mainstage productions — Verdi’s tragic “La Traviata” and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!”

The season opens with “La Traviata,” January 23 and 25, on the Saenger Theatre stage.

Written by Giuseppe Verdi in 1853, “traviata” is an Italian word that figuratively refers to a woman who has been rejected by society. Violetta is a Parisian courtesan whose love for young Alfredo is stymied by his father. Social hierarchies, the devotion of first love and tuberculosis merge in this timeless tragedy.

On March 13 and 15, another love story graces the Saenger stage when “Oklahoma!” brings humor, love triangles, a bit of American history, the challenges of frontier life and “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” in one of the most beloved musicals of the century. The musical was the first collaboration between composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II.

NEW AND FAMILIAR FACES ON STAGE

Alex Hilkey, Pensacola Opera director of advancement, said patrons might recognize some of the “La Traviata” actors.

“Violetta is played by Bizhou Chang, who is a former studio artist and local favorite. She was last seen on our stage as Mimi in “La Boheme” in 2023. Andrew Morstein, playing Alfredo, was last seen with us in “Lucia di Lammermoor” in 2024. He also came back and did a concert with us, Opera After Dark: Bella Notte. To a sold-out audience, he sang a selection of Italian favorites that you would expect from a tenor. It was a huge success, and our Pensacola Opera crowd has come to love Andrew. Another former studio artist, Jack Chandler, will also be back on our mainstage as the Marchese.”

The leads for Pensacola Opera’s “Oklahoma!” performance are new to the Pensacola stage, while other players are familiar.

“In “Oklahoma!” we will have a husband-and-wife duo playing the leads, Jonathan and Cadie Bryan, both making their Pensacola Opera debut,” said Hilkey.

Former studio artists Rachel Fitzgerald, Ron Dukes and Micah Perry will be returning to the Pensacola stage, with Fitzgerald making her professional musical theater debut and Dukes portraying the brooding, antagonistic farmhand Jud Fry. A host of other voices contribute to the magic that is a mainstage Pensacola Opera performance.

“Our current 2025-2026 Jan Miller Studio artists will round out the casts along with other new and returning singers.

Supporting our mainstage artists is the Pensacola Opera chorus. These are local, volunteer community members who audition and rehearse all year long. This season, we have 42 members in our opera chorus,” said Hilkey.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

With abundant free outreach to the Gulf Coast, Pensacola Opera is bringing its art to various area communities and making its mainstage performances as accessible as possible.

“We have student dress rehearsals that provide an opportunity for schools, groups, teachers and families to attend our final dress rehearsal at a reduced ticket price. Our hope is to provide young people with access to the arts at an affordable ticket price and an earlier start time,” said Hilkey.

Those performances are the Wednesday before opening night at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for high school and college students and chaperones. Students in grades 1-8 can attend for $5. Tickets for student dress rehearsals are available over the phone with the opera office only and must be purchased in advance.

Patrons seeking to add more to their opera experience might want to consider a Meet the Artist reception, which includes mingling with the cast and crew and a full catered dinner following the opening night performance. The “La Traviata” reception is January 23, and the “Oklahoma!” reception is March 13.

Matinee-goers can add on a similar experience with a pre-show brunch (including unlimited mimosas) and show introduction at Jackson’s Steakhouse. These brunches are January 25 and March 15.

Toni Sparks: Viewing life through

DIFFERENT LENSES

T

oni Sparks knows a little something about changing lenses.

Sparks is a local photographer — and owner of Short Story Studios — who has been using her camera to tell a person’s story for more than 20 years.

A Pensacola native who left home at 18 to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design, Sparks knew she was an artist. She was always a creative person who loved artistic expressions, including drawing and painting. What she didn’t yet know was how her focus would change.

“I knew I wanted to be an artist of some sort,” Sparks said. “I took photography as an elective, and I fell in love.”

After graduating from high school and earning a scholarship to SCAD, Sparks left Pensacola and didn’t look back — at least not right away. She moved from Savannah to Miami, Orlando, Myrtle Beach and Atlanta, building a career that blended artistry with adaptability.

Right out of college, she struck out on her own.

“It’s what I’ve always done,” Sparks said.

“I worked as a photo assistant in Miami and was still doing my own stuff on the side.

That’s kind of what I’ve always done.”

Even as she moved through different cities and creative roles, one thing remained constant: her curiosity. Sparks photographed architecture, landscapes and people before discovering what ultimately resonated most.

“It took me a little while to figure out that I really love photographing people,” she said.

That interest in people — their stories, motivations and emotions — now defines much of her work. Sparks especially enjoys doing branding photography for small business owners, a niche that allows her to combine technical skill with creativity.

“I love being able to get to know a small business owner and why they do what they do,” she said. “And I try to get that to come across through my camera.”

She is intentional about making each session distinct.

“Everybody’s look is different,” Sparks said. “I really try to curate the sessions based on what the client needs.”

That philosophy extends to her workspace. Since 2020, Sparks has operated out of her own studio in the old Sacred Heart Hospital building — a space she says fuels her creativity.

“There’s something about having your own space where you can just be creative,” she said. “To get there and automatically feel creative and want to create things.”

Creativity, for Sparks, is rarely confined to a single medium.

Long before digital tools became industry standard, she was mixing charcoal, ink and other materials. Even now, she blends straight photography with digital manipulation.

“I like to play with different mediums no matter what I’m doing,” she said. “It’s fun to kind of mix and match.”

When digital photography first emerged, Sparks adapted to the new technology, again taking a look through a new lens. A self-described “technology geek,” Sparks embraced the left-brain demands of modern creative work, from software to marketing.

“It’s allowed me to stay in the industry,” she said.

That balance between structure and creativity also shapes how she approaches life. Once rigid in her planning, Sparks now prioritizes flexibility — a shift she credits with opening unexpected doors.

“I used to be very rigid in my plans,” she said. “And I’ve learned along the way to be open, because you miss really big opportunities if you’re not open to change.”

That openness is especially meaningful for someone who describes herself as introverted.

“I’m still very introverted,” Sparks said.

“But the camera definitely helps me speak to people … it’s like a tool for me.”

The camera has also served as a way to process emotion. One recent mixed-media photo series, pieces of which now hang in local homes, emerged as a way to process her feelings.

“It was a series reflecting some emotions that I had going on about things happening in the world,” Sparks said. “It was very cathartic. I feel like being creative in any way is super cathartic.”

Looking to the year ahead, Sparks has plans to travel within the U.S. to photograph brands for business owners she has met through conferences — work that blends relationship-building with storytelling.

For Sparks, photography is not just about capturing what’s in front of her. It’s about perspective — understanding that clarity often comes not from perfect focus, but from the willingness to adjust and see the world anew.

Go worry, be unhappy So that’s why I’m so tired! I reread the text message, a quote from a book my friend is reading: “Worrying is carrying tomorrow’s load with today’s strength — carrying two days at once. It is moving into tomorrow ahead of time. Worrying doesn’t empty tomorrow of its sorrow; it empties today of its strength,” wrote Corrie Ten Boom.

I sighed as I considered the implications of these wise words. Today is heavy enough, I thought. It makes no sense for me to pick up tomorrow’s burdens today and shlep them around all day. It’s exhausting.

And yet that is what I do.

I’m a worrier.

And while I know that my incessant fretting accomplishes nothing productive, I don’t know how to stop. If it were as simple as flipping a switch, like Bobby McFerrin suggests, if I could just tell myself, “Don’t worry, be happy,” and then skip on down the road, I would do it.

But for most of us, it is not that simple.

Considering the fact that worry has important evolutionary roots, my fretful brain isn’t trying to destroy me; it’s trying to protect me. My hunter-gatherer ancestors needed to be hyper-alert to threats in order to survive.

However, the things I worry about in 21st-century America, are generally not physical threats to my existence. There are no saber-toothed tigers lurking in the shadows today. And yet, I fret.

Mostly I worry about the people I love, my health and the world we live in. But if I look at things objectively and in real time — today the people I love are fine; I’m alive and kickin’; and the world is still spinning on its axis.

“Don’t worry, Sharla. Be happy.” This is New Year’s resolution number one. Stop worrying.

But how?

I did a little research. I Googled: How to stop worrying. Much of what I came across seemed reductive and a bit cliché: distract yourself, challenge negative thoughts, practice gratitude… But I finally stumbled upon some advice from an online psychologist that seemed so ill-advised and unpleasant,

I had to give it a try.

New instructions set to a different tune: Go worry. Be unhappy. Hmm… For three weeks, I was to set aside 15 minutes a day to worry my fool head off (preferably not first thing in the morning or last thing at night). I was to jot my worries down as they occurred to me. Then when the timer went off, go do something I wanted to do.

I hated this plan! Why would I intentionally do something I’m desperate to quit? Like drinking a quart of vodka when I’d just hopped on the wagon.

But wait, it gets worse. The psychologist then paired this with another trendy concept that always trips me up — mindfulness.

The word itself is confusing.

My mind is full enough thankyouverymuch. Wouldn’t it feel better to have some empty space up there? It just gets so crowded with those saber-tooth tigers slobbering all over the place.

But there was an interesting twist in the mindfulness practice. Sure, the instruction to focus on my breath was job one, but I found I no longer needed to beat myself up every time my mind wandered.

Because that was the point. The more my mind wandered, the more often I’d get to practice directing my thoughts, and I would carry that redirection skill with me throughout the day (and especially at night when I’m trying to sleep) to gently exit futile thought loops.

I was told to briefly acknowledge the worries but kindly assure my over-protective brain that we’d get to them all at the appointed time — my 15-minute fret sesh.

I’m in week two of my “therapy” and I’m happy to report that halfway into my worry appointments, I’m feeling pretty bored. Since I’m no longer indulging those tigers 24/7, there’s less to write about — dare I say less to worry about?

And when I get tempted to pick up tomorrow’s load today, I save my strength.

Today weighs plenty.

The kaleidoscope of life Rotate the tube of a kaleidoscope, and the reflections of the mirrors and pieces of colored glass or paper produce changing patterns. For me, life is not a chronological timeline anymore. The older I get, the more my focus has shifted — the loving memories move to the front and the bad ones have faded away.

My father left us when I was young, and the only thing I vividly remember about him is that he didn’t like cucumbers. I remember being sad on Father’s Day and on the day our Catholic school had a fatherdaughter event. The other 363 days of the year, I was happy.

Luckily for me, my six siblings filled in for his absence. My earliest memories are of my sister, Susie, taking care of me like I was her baby. She was the one who changed my diaper, dressed me each day as my crib was in her room, and taught me how to swing — kick out, tuck under, which I wasn’t very good at, so I just begged her to push me every day. My sister, Ann, always made my birthdays special. One “May of the 13th” — that’s how I said it, they tell me — I woke up to a beautiful card she made with a drawing of a “porpoise with a purpose” and a giant porpoise beach float to wish me a happy day.

My mother had a chore chart for the seven of us; I cleaned windows and vacuumed. My brother, Stevie, was tasked with putting my little sister and me to bed. After he checked our homework and smelled our breath to make sure we brushed our teeth, he would entertain us with a “funny show”, making us giggle at his antics and beg for more so we could stay up later.

My sister, Patti, was the adventurous one and taught me how to ride a bike. I fell and skinned my knee on the first try, but her encouragement helped me learn how to get up and try again.

My brother, Johnny, has always been like a father to me. He was the one who walked me down the aisle at my wedding. I lived in his big walk-in closet after I graduated from college and needed to save enough money to afford the deposit for an apartment in Atlanta.

My little sister, Kate, is pretty much my best friend. She keeps me straight when I veer off the path. I tend to wander, want to make friends with everyone (including strangers in foreign countries), procrastinate and pack light. When

I lead us down the wrong path (or to the wrong ship), she is the disciplined one who uses her Duolingo skills to communicate with the taxi driver. She is the one whose phone is not dead from taking too many pictures, the one who saved the phone number of our ship in her phone, and the one who purchased the international calling plan. She forces me to stop dilly-dallying and to meet her at the Y for core and kettlebell classes. Someday she will successfully talk me into waking up early enough to see a sunrise.

My mother graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in economics and a minor in psychology, then went to night school to earn her master’s degree as a therapist. She started and managed a Vietnamese group home for refugees in the 1970s, and one of them came to live with us. Despite her advanced education, times were a bit tough and we struggled financially. I got a work permit at age 15.

While managing school, I worked at Taco Bell, babysat and mowed lawns (I was terrible at that job). In the summer, I lifeguarded six days a week, then waitressed and bartended to put myself through college. I bought my first car, an orange Gremlin with green racing stripes, for $500 with the babysitting money I made.

In my kaleidoscope, I don’t remember any hardship or shame. I have incredibly fond memories of my family and of all the people I met. I loved all those jobs (except the lawn-mowing). I learned valuable lessons along the way.

Even the heartbreak of lost loves and failed relationships seems to fade away as the kaleidoscope rotates and only the good memories stay in focus. It is kind of like the pain of childbirth — I will spare you the details (3 of my 4 were over 9 pounds, ouch) — once your cute babies grow up to be kind, adventurous adults, the pain is long gone. What comes into focus are the loving memories like the silly memes and reels they send you, making you smile.

If life seems tough right now, filled with adversity and hardship, try to rotate that kaleidoscope tube. Focus on the good stuff, the fond memories, and maybe the hard days will start to fade away. If you doubt my advice, take it from the Russian writer Dostoyevsky who wrote that pain is important in life. Suffering is the inevitable and necessary cost of realizing what we all truly seek in life: love.
