FROM THE PRINCIPAL This year began with the occupation and opening of our beautiful new Creative Arts and Design Centre and refurbishments to M8, our Junior School STEM Lab and our Year 4 Classrooms. We also celebrated the restoration and installation into our Chapel, of the 1905 WRAGG Pipe Organ, so generously donated by Mr Dudley Bastian, Director of Music at Penrhos College from 1974 to 1987. A series of workshops were held with College Council and College Leadership to revisit our Strategic Directions for 2017 to 2020, with outcomes being to strengthen our strategic financial and risk management and the strategic marketing of the College. In the spirit of continuous improvement, in 2016 we chose to focus on the following goals: • To gain the maximum period of five years for the Registration Renewal of the College • To implement the Australian Curriculum • To implement the 2016 WACE Course changes • To move to Phase 2 of our 21st Century Learning Design goal by engaging staff in Professional Learning Communities in order to allow them to learn new technical skills using Office 365 in parallel with evaluating and redesigning curriculum to build skill capacity of students • To embed the Visible Learning practice of Learning Intentions in the Teaching and Learning Programs • To progress the STEM Project through completion of the STEM scope and sequence K to 12 • To review the Teacher Feedback process to incorporate student surveys and ‘walk throughs’ by line managers • To effectively implement Protective Behaviours within the College community by training staff, students and parents across Junior and Secondary Schools • To explore the various learning management systems available commercially to assess value On 28 June, we were advised by the Department of Education that Penrhos College had been 2

successfully reregistered to 31 December 2021. This was a very good outcome. On Australian Curriculum, we have embedded the required changes to date across Junior and Secondary Schools and will remain on track for 2017 and beyond. Year 11 WACE Courses were refined for 2016 and new programs of study were successfully implemented for Year 12. We currently have 60 academic staff engaged in the Office 365, 21st Century Learning Design Skills. Group 1 will complete their training in June 2017, Group 2 will complete their training in December 2017 with Group 3 due to complete their training in December 2018. This is a significant undertaking in terms of professional learning for our staff but one that is fundamental to the learning outcomes for our students. Visible Learning through learning intentions has been embedded across Junior and Secondary Schools and student survey data suggests that significant gains have been made on teacher clarity in the classroom. Visible Learning will continue with a focus on explicit feedback strategies linked to success criteria, to support students on their learning journey. The STEM Program goes from strength-tostrength. The scope and sequencing across K to 12 is complete and staff and students continue to collaborate on exciting and challenging opportunities to take up. Penrhos College was the only school to be nominated as one of the five finalists in both Junior and Secondary categories in the Governor’s STEM Award. In 2017, Penrhos has been invited to present at three major conferences in Melbourne and Sydney, on aspects of STEM at Penrhos. Planning is well underway for the STEM conference that we will host at Penrhos in August 2017. Our teaching staff are receptive to feedback via student surveys and the practice of informal ‘walk throughs’, with a specific area of focus, is now an accepted collaborative practice between staff.

The Protective Behaviours Program has been implemented in 2016 and will be updated annually from 2017 with staff training, student presentations and parent workshops. The decision to purchase a commercial Student Learning Management system is on hold as we explore the potential capabilities of our existing data management system, Synergetic, to meet the outcomes we are seeking. Our Marketing and Community Relations Department has been restructured to incorporate Enrolments and Uniform Shop, and the Strategic Marketing Plan 2017 has been developed ready for implementation in 2017. Our new ‘Welcome to Penrhos’ tour video has been hugely successful with over 22,000 views on social media when it was released. Tour Days have been well attended with a second Kindergarten class approved for 2017, in response to demand for places. Penrhos College has accepted an invitation to join the Curtin University Innovative Schools’ Consortium in 2017. This opportunity has enormous potential through high level collaboration to build deep learning partnerships around many areas of the teaching and learning and professional learning spaces between Penrhos and Curtin University. We are enormously proud of all that we have accomplished in 2016; as you read through this report you will see evidence of the brilliant outcomes that have been achieved across all areas of our 2016 Strategic Directions. We have a great deal to look forward to in 2017. None of this would have been possible without the collective intelligence and integrity of our Academic and Operational Services staff, College Leadership, College Council and Parent Support Groups. Of greatest importance of course are our students, our very reason for being here.

FROM THE CHAIR OF COLLEGE COUNCIL The Penrhos College Council is responsible to the Uniting Church in Australia for the governance of Penrhos College. The Principal is appointed by, and accountable to the Council for delivery of the College’s teaching and learning program and the management of the school. An important function of the Council is to ensure the financial sustainability of the College through the approval of the annual budget. To that end, I am pleased to report the College will come in on budget for 2016. As part of the budgetary process, Council is also responsible for setting tuition fees each year. In 2017, fee increases will be restricted to 2.8%. The Council and College Leadership Group have worked to ensure Penrhos can continue to offer the level of educational excellence that the College is renowned for, while being mindful of the fact that

we are operating in a challenging economic climate. The table below lists the Tuition and Boarding Fees for 2017. Further information on the 2017 budget can be found on page 23. A significant milestone was celebrated at the beginning of the year with the eagerly anticipated opening of the Creative Arts and Design Centre. This beautiful new facility now accommodates the Photography and Media Department, Art Department and the Food & Textile Technology Department. A dedicated laboratory space is also being developed within the building to facilitate inspirational learning experiences across all areas of the curriculum through innovative design, technology and fabrication. 2016 also saw the College involved in the Registration Renewal process which is overseen by the Department of Education Services (DES).

DES takes a risk-based approach to reviewing all aspects of the operation of Independent schools, including compliance with legislated standards and requirements. A panel of independent school reviewers visited the College to view the campus and meet with key staff responsible for the standards of education and care of our students. The College Leadership Group, staff and College Council embraced the process of Registration Renewal and our strong governance was clearly evident with the school attaining re-registration for a further five years (the maximum term available). With re-registration secured, the College Council and College Leadership Group have been working collaboratively to establish our future strategic directions. The environment in which we operate is continually changing so a strong focus on strategic planning and economic modelling is imperative to ensure long term sustainability of the College while balancing affordability in the current economic climate.

INSPIRATIONAL STUDENT EXPERIENCES Achievements in 2016 • Visible Learning has continued to be a focus area in 2016 and student survey data suggests the College has made gains on teacher clarity in the classroom. Visible Learning is a professional development program for teachers that explores how using learning intentions, success criteria and various types of feedback can be used to make the learning journey explicit for students and improve learning outcomes. • Western Australian Curriculum for Years 7 to 10 has been embedded for Phase 2 subjects (Economics and Business, Geography and Politics and Law, Health and Physical Education) and refinement of implementation of Phase 3 subjects (Digital Technologies and Design Technology) are ready for 2017. Languages are the final area to implement in 2017-2020 beginning in Year 7 for 2017. Year 11 Courses were refined in 2016 for Units 1 and 2. New programs of study were successfully implemented for the new Year 12 courses this year, for Units 3 and 4. These will be refined in preparation for 2017 to ensure continuous improvement. • The College currently has 60 teaching staff engaged in Professional Learning Communities focused on 21st Century Learning Design. This program allows them to learn new technical skills using Office 365 in parallel with evaluating and redesigning curriculum to build skill capacity of students. • In Junior School, two significant projects: the K-12 21st Century Learning Design including Office 365, and the Junior School Amplify project are addressing elements of the general capabilities.

• Penrhos College Junior School was the only girl’s school in the Independent sector to be invited to participate in the first Amplify project sponsored by AISWA Amplify: Designing Bright Futures. The aim of the project is to “increase the proportion of students who are deeply engaged in their learning through the development of teaching, learning and assessment practices that promote engagement”. • Maths Mentor and STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) grew from strengthto-strength in 2016. Highlights from the year included our Future Problem Solvers (FPS) attending the National Finals in Melbourne and the FPS International Conference in the USA; robotics success at the First Robotics Competition in Sydney and the First Robotics World Championships in St Louis, Missouri; equal second place by our teams in the Next Tech Girls Superheroes 2016; a win in League of Legends; awards for Engineers in Schools Project Presentations; a win in the Have Sum Fun competition; success in the RACI Titration Stakes; Just Start It; a successful Space Camp and STEM tour to the USA; opportunities for Junior and Secondary School girls to work with STEM Researcher in Residence Dr Ellen Fortini, and myriad of co-curricular opportunities complimenting the curriculum. • Both the Junior School and Secondary School were finalists in the Governor’s STEM Awards for 2016. Penrhos was the only school to be a finalist in both categories. • Protective Behaviours Curriculum was delivered to Junior and Secondary School students from K-12 in collaboration with Protective Behaviours WA. Protective Behaviours WA is Western Australia’s leading prevention education organisation working in WA and internationally to prevent child abuse.

INSPIRATIONAL STUDENT EXPERIENCES Achievements in 2016 (cont’d) • The Parents and Friends Association sponsored Susan McLean, Australia’s foremost expert in the area of cyber safety and young people, to conduct a parent workshop and address students in Years 6 -12. • The Secondary School Production, The Addams Family: A New Musical, played to sell-out shows over three days during July. • All Junior School students in Years 3 to 6 performed in the biennial Artsfest production which this year was Dr Dolittle JR. • Penrhos College was once again the Champion School in IGSSA Athletics. The College has won Champion School 23 times out of the last 24 years which is an outstanding achievement. • Our Junior School girls are among the fittest in the nation placing in the top one percent of primary schools tested in Australian and first in private schools in the State in the Sports Challenge Australia fitness testing. • The Chorale and String Orchestra travelled to Europe to compete at the 2016 Summa Cum Laude International Music Festival in Vienna culminating in a performance at the sold-out Summa Cum Laude Festival Winner’s Concert at the Vienna Konzerthaus.

• Art students have enjoyed working and learning in the beautiful new Creative Arts and Design Centre (CADC) which opened in April. Penrhos was invited to design the City of South Perth’s banner for WALGA (Western Australian Local Government Association) Week which flew proudly in Adelaide Terrace during July. Students also achieved great success in the Atwell Youth Art Awards and 2016 Black Swan Prize for Portraiture Youth Prize and engaged with numerous practicing Perth artists who visited the College as part of the Artists in Residence program which showcases talented Western Australian artists. • The College celebrated a vast array of languages, traditions and cultures that make up the College community during Language Week with Junior and Secondary Schools organising a host of events throughout the week. Language students participated in the Language Perfect World Championships during June which resulted in Penrhos being ranked first in our school category in WA, third overall in Western Australia out of 114 schools, 16th in Australia out of 761 schools and 31st in the world out of 1,111 schools. • A variety of tours took place to Korea (World Mathematics Championships), USA (Space Camp and STEM Tour), Sydney (National Institute of Dramatic Arts – NIDA), Japan (Languages) and Europe (Music Tour).

• A massive choral event featuring all choral students from Junior School and Secondary School – as well as students from Wesley and Aquinas Colleges – was a highlight of this year’s music calendar. The concert, Destination Music, held at the Winthrop Hall at UWA was the culmination of a week of intensive masterclasses and choral clinics by Penrhos College 2016 Artist in Residence – Dr Christian Grases from the University of Southern California.

Ahead in 2017 • The Visible Learning initiative supporting teachers in implementing explicit feedback strategies linked to success criteria will be the focus in 2017 to help students identify their next steps in the learning journey. Professional Learning sessions will be devoted to unpacking the four types of Feedback as part of the Visible Learning program. • The ELEVATE program, run by AISNSW in conjunction with the United Kingdom Innovation Unit, will be trialed in Year 8 to improve the outcomes of high potential students identified via standardised testing. • Our first group of staff will complete their 21st Century Curriculum Development training ensuring the girls are provided opportunities to develop their skills in Collaboration, Knowledge Construction, Self-Regulation, Real-World Problem Solving and Innovation, Skillful Communication and Use of ICT for Learning. Further staff will begin their journey in this program in 2017.

• A review of the purpose, method and use of wellbeing data collection in the Secondary School will be undertaken. • Secondary School students will continue to be taught and guided in self-management strategies that help reduce anxiety and stress in order to improve their engagement and performance. Specifically the use of a dedicated “chill out” space will be a focus for 2017. • thrive at Penrhos will be implemented both within the College and to the wider College Community. thrive at Penrhos is an overview of the K-12 specialised pastoral care support programs and structures which enable all students to strengthen their emotional and social development, nurture healthy friendships and create a positive mindset. • 2017 will see the further development of our Child Protection Program, including the Protective Behaviours curricula in both Junior and Secondary schools.

• A Student Tech Team will be formed to provide peer mentoring in ICT and encourage teachers to utilise the myriad of software available for learning. • In Junior School, the Amplify project proposal will be ready for trialling in 2017, which will see the Junior School working with Lee Wanatabe Crockett, who has been engaged to present the Global Citizen Fluencies to staff and to work with a Leadership Group to establish a professional learning program to implement the Global fluencies. In addition, Maths will continue to be a focus and the new HASS and Health and PE Curriculum will be introduced and reported on.

INSPIRATIONAL STAFF Achievements in 2016 • Heads of Department in conjunction with the Dean of Professional Learning, Development and Growth, planned and delivered nine professional learning sessions for staff that consolidated the introduction of Learning Intentions and Success Criteria into classroom practice, as part of the Visible Learning program and also finalised WACE and WA Curriculum implementation.

• Twenty-five staff members attended interstate conferences over 2016. Two staff members experienced international professional development — Tina Russell (HoD – Learning Technologies) participated in the AISWA ICT Study Tour of the USA and Alison Kalajzich (HoD – English) attended the Cambridge Teachers Seminar (English Literature) in the UK.

• The 21st Century Learning Design trial had a successful introduction and the first group of 30 staff have completed four of the six learning frameworks. The trial group was duplicated in Semester Two to enable another 30 staff members to begin the course. These 60 staff have developed several tasks over the year that have been trailed in their classrooms to both engage the students in their learning and develop vital 21st Century Skills.

• In March, the College attained re-registration for a further five years (the maximum period that may be given). With respect to re-registration of the College, emphasis has been placed on the alignment of policy, procedures and practice, particularly with respect to Risk Management, Code of Conduct and Child Protection.

• Five staff members including the Dean and Assistant Dean of Teaching and Learning have been participating in the Elevate program run by the Association of Independent Schools NSW. This program is targeted at providing engaging learning experiences for high potential students. • Six staff members have been engaged in a coaching process to complete their full Teachers Registration and 28 staff received coaching to review the progress/achievement of their 2015 goals as part of the Reflection, Performance and Development process.

• Mathematics teacher Mr Peter Chandler was recognised by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) as the winner of the Choose Maths Teacher Award for mentoring girls in Mathematics. Mr Chandler won $10,000 prize money to further develop his skills plus $10,000 to support Mathematics programs at the College. • Revision of Teacher Feedback processes occurred to embed ‘walk throughs’ by line managers and student surveys to provide more opportunities for feedback to teachers to aid ongoing improvement in practice.

Ahead in 2017 • During August 2016 new Registration Standards from DES were released for 2017. The major change to the standards is the increased emphasis around child protection with a new standard Child abuse prevention being introduced. All schools are required to be compliant with these standards by the start of 2017. • The STEM program will be bolstered by the introduction of a STEM Coordinator to compliment the great work of the existing Maths Mentor Coordinator. • The Aspiring Leaders program will return for 2017 and staff interested in managerial and leadership training will be invited to apply for this internally run professional development. • Staff will be engaged in multiple training opportunities in the area of first aid, bronze medallion, child protection, mandatory reporting, asthma and CPR to maintain the regulatory requirements of the College. • The College will continue to review and reflect on the RPD process in order to strive for continual improvement in the program. • 2017 will see the further development of our Child Protection Program, including the Protective Behaviours curricula in both Junior and Secondary schools and an increased emphasis around Child Protection with a new Standard Child Abuse prevention being introduced.

INSPIRATIONAL ENVIRONMENT Achievements in 2016 • The completed Creative Arts and Design Centre (CADC), a building that celebrates creativity, design and technology in the pursuit of the creative arts at Penrhos, was officially opened on Friday, 1 April by Council Chairperson Mr Paul Owen. The CADC accommodates the Photography and Media Department, Art Department and Food, Textile Technology Department. • The Secondary School Library made the Honours List as one of the nation’s Great School Libraries from a field of 200 school libraries that nominated nationally. • The demand for places in Junior School saw the Junior School double stream classes from Preprimary to Year 4 in 2016. Two new Year 4 classrooms were established to cater for double streaming and a new Junior School art room was established in one of the old Food Technology and Textiles rooms adjacent to the new STEM and Innovation Laboratory.

• The WRAGG Pipe Organ gifted to the College by Mr Dudley Bastian, the first Penrhos College Director of Music (1974-1987), was installed on the upper level of the College Chapel and a Commissioning Service was held in the Chapel during November. • The College Tour video, ‘Welcome to Penrhos’, was launched showcasing the campus and activities on offer at Penrhos College. It received over 22,000 views on social media when it was released and reached over 46,500 people. • 30 June marked the 50th Anniversary of the State Government allocation of the land in what had been the Collier Pine Plantation to the then Methodist Church, for the purpose of a school which became Penrhos College.

• The Junior School STEM and Innovation Laboratory opened providing a versatile workspace for STEM activities. This addition to the Junior School demonstrates the College’s commitment to continuing to grow the STEM opportunities on offer at Penrhos in the formative years of our students’ education.

Ahead in 2017 • Due to strong enrolments in the Early Learning Centre, a second stream of Kindergarten will be introduced in 2017. • Minor refurbishments of the Junior School Library, the old FT&T classrooms, Secondary School Reception and Chaplain’s office will occur. • The Penrhos College Uniform Shop will undergo a minor refurbishment. • A dedicated laboratory space will be developed within the CADC building to facilitate inspirational learning experiences across all areas of the curriculum through innovative design, technology and fabrication.

INSPIRATIONAL & ENDURING COMMUNITY Achievements in 2016 • Penrhos College has close links with universities, not-for-profit organisations, clubs and a host of businesses in order to provide inspirational activities for students. Staff and students have benefited from partnerships with the University of Western Australia and Curtin University, West Australian Symphony Orchestra, the Confucius Institute, Amanda Young Foundation and the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research (Profs@Penrhos). • The Rixon Theatre Sponsor a Seat campaign continues to receive support with current families and Alumni members continuing to purchase seats during 2016. • Council Academic scholarships and Mind, Heart, Body, Spirit scholarships were once again offered to high achievers and girls who may not otherwise be able to attend Penrhos, and who exhibit qualities aligned with the Whole Person Paradigm. 12 scholarships and two Foundation Bursaries were awarded in 2016 for entry to 2017 in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10.

• The College hosted a number of guest speakers during the year including the Federal Member for Perth, the Hon Alannah MacTiernan MP who presented an engaging talk on gender equality, as well as Senator the Honourable Mathias Cormann, Minister for Finance, Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate who addressed the Year 11 and 12 Politics and Law students. • A number of successful Alumni events were held during the year include a leavers’ reunion, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 year reunions, the Alumni High Tea and Founders Day. • Annual Giving and an Alumni Bequest Campaign were conducted with a view to building up philanthropic support from within the community. • A new online application process for enrolment and payment of the application fee to simplify the enrolment process was introduced and an online facility was offered for families to update medical and contact details directly via the Penrhos Portal.

• Penrhos College was represented at country fields days in Wagin, Darwin, Karratha Dowerin, Newdegate, Mingenew, Esperance and Albany which provided an opportunity to connect with past, present and future families.

• The present agreement with Hangzhou Jingdu Primary School was extended to include a sisterschool relationship between Hangzhou Jingdu Kindergarten and Penrhos College Early Learning Centre.

• Numerous events were held throughout the year to foster relationships within the College community and with the wider community. These included the P&F Family BBQ, Opening of the CADC, successful College Tour events, on-campus Mother/ Daughter and Father/Daughter Dinners, Valedictory celebrations, camps, Penrhos/Dymocks Author visits, Founders’ Day and Grandparents’ Day.

• Parent picnics were introduced in the Junior School to encourage families to visit the campus and enjoy lunch with the Junior School girls in a relaxed atmosphere.

Ahead in 2017 • A new College website will be released in 2017. The website will incorporate a structure that effectively engages with the target audiences, encourages them to interact with the site and brand through a consistent, clear and intuitive experience on any device. • A second Kindergarten class will commence in Term 1, 2017. • As a result of the Memorandum of Understanding between Curtin University and Penrhos College, opportunities to share resources and collaborate through the Professional Learning Hub, Practicum Teacher program and leadership development initiatives will be explored. • The College will continue to explore opportunities through the Friends of STEM to provide inspirational industry opportunities for students. • Following the successful introduction of a playgroup in 2016, Penrhos Playgroup will be extended to two days per week in 2017. • The College will host a STEM conference in August 2017.

INSPIRATIONAL & ENDURING COMMUNITY From our Support Groups PENRHOS COLLEGE ALUMNI (INC)

Penrhos College Alumni Inc aims to perpetuate school and community spirit among our 9,000+ alumni members. Penrhos old girls are based in over 40 countries around the world, and our ever growing network means ties to each other and the College reach far and wide. This year, Penrhos Alumni hosted or supported the following events and initiatives: • Leavers’ 18 Month, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 Year reunions were all held in Perth • A Sydney reunion was held in conjunction with Wesley Old Boys in September • Shakers & Stirrers Networking Evening (with Wesley Old Boys) • Alumni High Tea (collected donations to support The Esther Foundation) • Penrhos College Founders’ Day • Pleiades annual meeting of seven sister schools to discuss Alumni initiatives • Year 12 Mother Daughter Dinner (welcome girls to the Alumni with gift) • Penrhos Alumni Endeavour Award (presented to Alice Lewis) • Penrhos Alumni Margaret Way Scholarship (awarded to Amelia Hirte)

AUXILIARY

The Penrhos Auxiliary aims to nurture friendship within the parent body of the Penrhos Community and to support the College. Our members are comprised of mums with daughters from a range of Year groups. During 2016, the Auxiliary supported the following College events and initiatives: • ‘Back to School’ Morning Tea – for parents from both Junior and Secondary Schools to welcome them back for the school year. • Pancake Day – assisted the Chaplaincy with the preparation and distribution of pancakes to the Junior and Secondary School girls. • Mothers’ Day – supplied flowers tied with ribbon to the Junior School to present to their mothers/ guardians after the Mothers’ Day Assembly. • Spring Lunch – held in September at the Royal Perth Golf Club. Tickets sold quickly and, thanks to the support of the local community, there were many raffle prizes won throughout the day. • Year 12 Valedictory Week – assisted by providing Morning Tea for the Year 12 parents on ‘P’ Day and for all guests on Flower Day. The Auxiliary also supplied a large, labelled bucket for each Year 12 student to collect their flowers on Flower Day. • Celebration cakes for Penrhos College staff for World Teachers’ Day. • Year 12 Year book publication. • Junior School Speech Day book prize.

FRIENDS OF DRAMA AND DANCE (FoDD)

Friends of Drama and Dance (FoDD) aims to support the work of the girls and staff of the Drama and Dance departments at Penrhos. FoDD remains focused on ensuring a strong volunteer base so as to find sufficient helpers to work in the Rixon Theatre serving refreshments to our patrons and, where needed, in costuming and backstage. 2016 proved another very successful year with the main highlights being: • In consultation with the College, FoDD set up a closed Facebook group this year to allow for more timely communication with members and to promote the group within the wider College community. • Help in the costume department continued this year with ‘Shed Fridays’. The day was moved from a Wednesday to Friday afternoon in 2016 as this suited more parents. • Assisting with the costume department costume garage sale. • Supporting or attending the following College Dance and Drama events: »» The College production The Addams Family - A New Musical. »» Junior School Artsfest – Dr Dolittle JR »» Variety Night »» Rixon Theatre Sponsor a Seat program »» Dramafest »» Dance Showcase »» Junior School parent information evening

FRIENDS OF MUSIC (FOM)

Friends of Music (FoM) is open to anyone interested in Music at Penrhos, particularly those whose daughters play an instrument, sing in a choir or are studying Music as a subject. Our objective is to create opportunities for parents and teachers to foster the enjoyment and promotion of music, by consultation, organising social activities, providing equipment, and liaising with other Support Groups. During 2016, Friends of Music: • Continued to have a strong band of helpers who provided assistance over the year with the myriad of music performances and events. • Provided ticketing assistance and refreshments for all musical events in the Rixon Theatre during the year. • With the support of the College, set up a closed Facebook group (Friends of Music Penrhos) as another means of engaging with the Penrhos community. • Provided assistance at a host of events held both on and off campus including Junior School Winter Concert, Senior Music Recital, eisteddfods, Telethon, valedictory events, Dudley Bastian Organ Dedication Recital, Wesley Carols Service, Annual FoM Welcome Breakfast, Junior School Parent Information evening, Auxiliary Back to School Morning Tea, P&F BBQ, FoM Sundowner, 2016 Penrhos College Europe Music Tour, Junior School Tea Time Concerts, Back to Broadway River Cruise, Penrhos Jazz Soiree, The Red Carpet Movie Music Premiere, Passport Series – Destination Music, Music Gala Night and the College Production. • Continued to support the instruments of need program through the purchase of double basses, violas and wind instruments.

INSPIRATIONAL & ENDURING COMMUNITY From our Support Groups PARENTS & FRIENDS ASSOCIATION (P&F)

The Parents & Friends Association (P&F) is open to all parents and guardians of College students. The function of the P&F is to create opportunities to meet with parents and teachers to discuss subjects of mutual interest. The P&F meetings are an ideal time to hear from the Principal and Head of Junior School on matters relating to the running of the College and to bring to the table any ideas or concerns. • This year’s highlight was once again the Annual P&F Family Barbecue which is run by P&F volunteers and fosters community spirit at the beginning of each year. This year’s event was attended by a wide cross section of the College community and is a popular social event to kick of the school year. • The P&F contributed with the costs of funding protective behavior workshops at the College during 2016, specifically bringing Cyber safety specialist Susan McLean to the College in August to attend Year 6-12 and conducted an evening workshop with the wider school community on Monday, 1 August. • The P&F supported the first Junior School disco which is set to become an annual event for our Junior School students.

PENRHOS ROWING SUPPORT GROUP (PRSG)

The Penrhos Rowing Support Group works closely with the Head of Rowing, Mr Keith Reynolds, to support the rowing squad. This comes in the form of fundraising and hands-on support for rowing initiatives. During the March mid-term break, 17 Year 12 students and three coaches travelled to Melbourne for the Rowing trip. In March, PRSG manned the sausage sizzle at the Astrofest at Curtin University which was very successful. A successful sheep manure fundraising drive took place on 30 April and was a resounding success. The Head of the River was held on 25 June and supported by PRSG. Eaton Rowing Camp for the entire squad took place on the weekend of 1-3 April.

MENRHOS

Menrhos brings people together through Dad and Daughter events. It helps strengthen the bonds between Dads and the College and aims to encouraging Penrhos fathers to take an active role in their daughter’s education and the College. This year ,the following Menrhos events occurred and were well supported by dads and their daughters. • Junior School Menrhos Movie Night • Year 5 Dad and Daughter Menrhos Camp • Year 7 Dad and Daughter Menrhos Camp • Secondary School Menrhos Breakfast

THE PENRHOSIAN CLUB

The Penrhosian Club welcomes mothers of former students, and current and past staff to maintain links with the College, make new friends and keep in touch. The Penrhosian Club held five meetings during 2016 and the annual Christmas lunch with Wesleyana Club.

FRIENDS OF STEM

Created in 2016, the primary purpose of this group is to tap into STEM expertise and industry links within the parent, alumni and wider College community, for the benefit of Penrhos students. Friends of STEM welcomed many new members throughout the year and participated in round-table discussions to investigate opportunities to: • Provide Year 10 student work experience placements (the demand for STEM placements is growing) • Source inspiring guest speakers and potential visitors and residencies • Seek corporate sponsorship opportunities • Provide assistance and advice on grant applications • Provide speakers and expertise for STEM events at the College • Give teaching staff access to STEM expertise for certain areas of the curriculum

PENRHOS COLLEGE FOUNDATION

The Penrhos College Foundation aims to accumulate, preserve and manage a corpus of funds, the income from which will assist in safeguarding the financial future of Penrhos College while contributing to the school’s ongoing development. During 2016, the Penrhos College Foundation: • Supported Penrhos Rowing Support Group and Boarders’ Netball through our Grant scheme. • Undertook a full review of the Foundation Constitution to ensure a very functional and modern constitution moving forward • Conducted an Annual Giving campaign • Continued to promote the Rixon Theatre Sponsor a Seat program • Sponsored the Year 12 Father Daughter Dinner • Supported Menrhos • Awarded the Michael Boud Isolated Children’s Scholarship and two Foundation Bursaries • Conducted a Bequest campaign in conjunction with Penrhos College Alumni Inc.

Food and Science Technology, French, Geography, Human Biological Sciences, Literature, Mathematics 3AB, Modern History, Physical Education Studies, Politics & Law. • Fourteen Year 12 students undertook Vocational Courses (VET) with 93% achieving a Certificate 11 or higher.

The following list provides a snapshot of the accomplishments of the Year 12, 2015 cohort: • All 158 Year 12 students achieved the West Australian Certificate of Education (Graduation). • Penrhos College ranked 6th in the League Tables (Top 50 WACE Schools). • Penrhos College was ranked among the top schools in the state in the following Stage 3 courses: Applied Information Technology, Biological Sciences, Design, Drama, English,

2017 BUDGET SNAPSHOT CHANGES IN OPERATING INCOME & EXPENDITURE AND PROCESSES

• Total student numbers forecast at 1,180 • Two Kindergarten classes to be offered in 2017 • Reduction in the Resource Fee across most year levels • Change in banking provider to allow integration with the finance system and online payments for parents • Increase in the provision for doubtful debts as a result of harder financial times being felt by the parent community • The College continues to implement changes to reduce costs pertaining to the consumption of energy, including the installation of energy efficient lighting throughout the College and central management of air conditioning. • The Out of School Care Program has been expanded to now cover holiday periods in addition to before and after school care.

MOVEMENT IN STAFFING

• Double streaming of Kindergarten has resulted in the employment of an additional teacher • A focus on Strategic Directions for 2017 to 2020 with outcomes being to strengthen our strategic financial, risk management and marketing, in conjunction with student movement and timetabling, has seen a net reduction in Staff FTE of 0.76 FTE • A pay freeze has been imposed on Senior Management Staff for 2017 • The OSS Staffing Structure will be reviewed during 2017 following a report from an external consultant

CAPITAL EXPENDITURE

• Departmental capital expenditure forecast at $328,000 which includes replacement of student desks and chairs, blinds and air conditioners. • Purchase of compost and worm bins to coincide with the Junior School recycling initiative • A number of minor refurbishments planned for the Christmas Holiday period including the Junior School Library, the old FT&T classrooms, Secondary School Reception and Chaplain’s office • Replacement and upgrade of audio-visual equipment in classrooms throughout the College
