Welcome to our 79th year! As I write this, the blooms, the sun and the breeze are a welcome backdrop. All of us here in Door County are so looking forward to our summer season and, dare I say it, we deserve it! This past winter was certainly one for the history books and thank goodness it’s just that…history!

I almost feel like Greg, our talented artistic director, had me in mind when he picked this season. I am always anxiously awaiting the list of plays and when I was made privy to them this year, I had a smile from ear to ear. I am a sucker for a good mystery and one of my favorite authors is Agatha Christie; I am always thrilled to see her name on the playbill! Back in 1999, long before I was part of the Players family one of the best shows I remember seeing at the Players was Always…Patsy Cline. I am so excited to be here and come full circle with this show.

I have had a fascination with the Civil War since I was in high school and I know Butler will be a riveting show. We are honored and excited to have another world premiere at the Players from our good friend Sean Grennan. His show Making God Laugh was a highlight of the 2011 season and we are so excited to have The Tin Woman kick off our summer.

One of our newest endeavors at the theatre this summer are pre-show discussions. One night during each play, folks can gather at 6:30 p.m. for a discussion that is germane to the current show. Beginning the series will be heart transplant recipients from The Second Chance for Life Foundation. We are so lucky to have them lead our first discussion. Please see page 59 for the list of dates and speakers.

As usual, I want to thank all of you for being here tonight. I am so honored to be a part of this organization and all of us here at the Players want you to feel like you are part of the family.

Our entire company works so hard so that you, the supporter and audience member, has the best experience possible. You are as likely to see our incredibly hard working managing director, Brian Kelsey, directing traffic as you are to see him in the board room...everyone here does what needs to be done to make the theater what it is supposed to be, a way to transport our patrons to a unique and beautiful Door County experience. Welcome back, old friends! And a very warm welcome to those of you here for the first time!

We’re thrilled you’ve come to enjoy the unique experience known as the Peninsula Players - this beautiful natural setting, our lovely modern theater and all the shows we’re so eager to share with you.

Seventy-nine years of story-telling have passed here at the Players - 79 years during which we have been delighted to share our joy and passion with you through this communal celebration of life that is live theater. I must let you know that we have been honored for this work we love to do with the Governor’s Award for Arts, Culture and Heritage this year. We are very pleased to be recognized for enhancing the cultural and economic well-being of this community, as well as contributing to the wonderful state-wide and national reputation of Door County. We share this award with you, our patrons and supporters. Thank you.

Yes, we’ve been doing this for a long time now, but it’s always an adventure! Seventy-nine years of shows of all kinds - comedies, dramas and musicals. From Greek tragedy to the silliest of farces. From A Man for All Seasons to The Girl in the Freudian Slip. From Oedipus to Nunsense. And pretty much everything in between! It’s been our joy to bring them to you, and a great pleasure to present another plate of confections for you to savor.

Our opening show, The Tin Woman by Sean Grennan, author of audience favorite Making God Laugh, is a world premiere of a touching, funny play about a family you’ll recognize and - yes - a woman with a new heart. We next move to a murderous world where someone clearly doesn’t have a heart in Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None - a classy who-really-dunnit on the Players’ stage for the first time. Quick-change madness follows as two actors play all the roles, men and women, in Charles Ludlum’s The Mystery of Irma Vep, a combination of Wuthering Heights, The Mummy’s Curse and the Three Stooges (with a touch of werewolf thrown in). After this I’m very pleased to present the Midwest premiere of the sharp-witted Civil War drama Butler by Richard Strand, in which Major Butler and a smart runaway slave engage in a stand-off, that changed the course of American history. And, finally, we close our season with the sweet, funny and very musical Always...Patsy Cline, a story about friendship, a country legend and lots of all-time great songs.

I hope you enjoy the combination of these shows - they’ll take you to lots of different places! We’re very happy to share them with you! Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

GREG VINKLER Artistic Director Actor – Butler Director – The Mystery of Irma Vep

Greg is delighted to have played a part in the Players’ wonderful history for 26 years. In that time he has directed 26 productions (including Chicago and Lombardi) and performed in 44 shows. Favorite roles include Sherlock Holmes, Salieri, Sir Thomas More and Dr. Zubritsky in Fools. For his work with the Players he was honored with the inaugural Door County Artist of the Year award.

Greg performs extensively in Chicago, appearing at Chicago Shakespeare (35 productions), Goodman, Steppenwolf, Shubert, Court, Writers, Northlight, Marriott Lincolnshire and Victory Gardens theaters, and received three Joseph Jefferson Awards (nominated 12 times), two Artisan Awards and an After Dark Award. Regionally he performed at Paper Mill, Fulton, Pittsburgh Public, BoarsHead and Milwaukee Chamber theaters. Greg has appeared on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning revival of West Side Story and also at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Barbican Theatre in London, Vienna’s English Theatre and Singapore Rep.

Brian celebrates his seventh season as the Peninsula Players Managing Director. He comes to the Players with a broad range of “for profit” and “not for profit” business experience, gained both in the United States and Europe, in the fields of operations, finance, marketing and public relations. Brian is engaged in the arts and tourism industries and serves on the board of the Fish Creek Civic Assn.(vice president), Peninsula Arts and Humanities Alliance (past president), Theatre Wisconsin (president) and was appointed by the Governor to the Wisconsin Arts Board and the Wisconsin Governor’s Council on Tourism (vice chair). A graduate of Marquette University with a degree in journalism, Brian is pleased to share his business experience in the community that raised him. As a side note, he is even more pleased to be working for the organization that gave him his first performing arts experience as a child.

TOM MULA Director – The Tin Woman Actor – And Then There Were None Tom Mula is delighted to be back at his “home down by the bay” for his 20th season. His acting performances include Chicago, Heroes, Cabaret, and The Mystery of Irma Vep. Shows he has directed include Amadeus, Lion in Winter, Greetings, and the world premiere Making God Laugh.

Peninsula Players premiered Tom’s play Bob Almighty, which was written for Bob Thompson. Tom was the Goodman Theatre’s resident Scrooge for seven seasons. Other Chicago credits include Jefferson Awards for his performance in Hot Mikado and his play The Golem and Nicole Hollander’s Sylvia’s Real Good Advice. Tom is a full-time faculty member at Columbia College. He is also the author of the bestselling book/ award-winning play Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol. His new book, Hackers of Oz, was awarded a Silver Medal in this year’s Wishing Shelf Awards.

KRISTINE THATCHER Director - Butler Actor – The Tin Woman, And Then There Were None

Kristine is delighted to be back in the land of excellent theater, sound sleep, delicious food and dear friends. Her Peninsula Players directing credits include Miracle on South Division Street, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Uneasy Chair, Over the Tavern and Panic. Her Players acting credits include Jo in A Few Good Men, Eliza in Pygmalion and Agnes in Dancing at Lughnasa. Kristine is also a playwright and was commissioned by the Players to write a play about “the unique character and rich history of Door County.” The result was Apparitions, which premiered at the Players in 1995.

Her other plays include Emma’s Child, Voice of Good Hope, Under Glass, Among Friends, Niedecker and Waiting for Tina Meyer with Larry Shue. She is currently at work on The Bloodhound Law, a play commissioned by Cit Lit Theater in Chicago, about the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.

In Memory of Richard “Rik” Warch, Peninsula Players Board member 2009 – 2013

Peninsula Players company members were saddened by the loss of board member Rik Warch when he passed away Sept. 14, 2013 at his home in Ellison Bay. He was a dedicated company member and supporter of the Players.

“I personally recruited Rik to join our board,” said Julia Chomeau, Players Board President. “His vast intelligence and experience was invaluable to the Players board. He was the constant voice of reason.

He wasn’t the most vocal during meetings, he would observe and listen but when he did say something, it was always right on the money. He was someone I looked up to and tried to learn from and he will be very, very missed.”

Rik was the former president of Lawrence University, active at the UUFellowship and was both a student and instructor in seminars at Bjorklunden.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in history at William College in 1961, a bachelor of divinity degree from Yale University in 1964 and a Ph.D. in American studies in 1968 and was ordained a minister in the Presbyterian Church. He married Margot Moses in 1962.

Rik is survived by his wife, Margot; two sons and their families, who live in St. Paul, Minn.: Stephen, his wife, Alexandra Klass, and their daughters, Helen and Zoe; and David, his wife, Sarah, and their daughters, Sydney and Georgie; and his daughter, Karin, a Ph.D. candidate who studies and teaches in London, England. He is also survived by his sister, Linda Fenton, his aunt, Betty Hansen, brothers-in-law, Peter Fenton and Bob Moses, sisters-in-law, Lois Moses, Marilyn Moses and Marysue Moses and their families.

Sean is delighted to be back at Peninsula Players with the world premiere of The Tin Woman. Previously his play Making God Laugh premiered here in the summer of ’11. Sean’s other plays include: Beer for Breakfast, As Long As We Both Shall Live, LUCK! and others. His musicals include Phantom of the Country Palace (MTI) and Ms. Cinderella which debuted at the Marriott Theatre. Further musicals include Married Alive!, A Dog’s Life and Another Night Before Christmas (Playscripts Inc.) all of which premiered at The American Heartland Theatre and have gone on to numerous productions in the U.S., Canada and England. As an actor, Sean worked for many years in the Chicago area at the Court Theatre, The Goodman Theatre, Victory Gardens, The Organic Theatre, Drury Lane, the Marriott and many more. Since moving east, he has appeared Off-Broadway, around the country and, of course, on “Law & Order (SVU and CI).” Films include, The Untouchables and Rudy. Joel has many wonderful memories of working at Peninsula Players, starting with All My Sons and You Can’t Take It With You in 1995, and later Communicating Doors, The Cherry Orchard, and Arsenic and Old Lace.

Chicago credits include House And Garden and Pericles at the Goodman Theatre, Another Part of The Forest, Benefactors, Misalliance, and Our Town at Writers Theatre, Cymbeline and The Merry Wives of Windsor at Chicago Shakespeare Theater. National tours include Showboat, Ragtime, Beauty and the Beast. For 30 years she worked in Chicago at such theaters as Writers Theatre: As You Like It, Our Town; Chicago Shakespeare: The Merry Wives of Windsor, Sunday in the Park with George, A Little Night Music; Marriot Lincolnshire: The King and I, Into The Woods, Gypsy, Grand Hotel; The Goodman: A Christmas Carol, The Visit(standby for Chita Rivera). Erica Elam lives in Los Angeles, California, but has traveled the world with The Second City on Norwegian Cruise Lines and performed all over Chicago at theaters including The Goodman, Steppenwolf and Chicago Shakespeare. She teaches improvisation and acting at Second City, iO, The School at Steppenwolf, Notre Dame and Princeton University.

Erica is a company member with the critically acclaimed musical improv group, Baby Wants Candy, as well as HOME: An Improvised Play and The Improvised Sondheim Project. Erica was named one of the “Top 5 Actors to Watch” by The Chicago Tribune, is a graduate of The University of Georgia, The Second City Conservatory and The School at Steppenwolf.

Audra marks her 20th season as a Peninsula Player where she served as the Box Office Manager, Treasurer and several seasons as Public Relations Director. In 1998, Audra became the Players Business Manager. She worked throughout the Midwest at various theaters serving as Assistant Sales Manager at The New Theatre Restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri and as Business Manager for University Theatre in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

She earned a BFA degree in technical theater and an MA in theater history and public relations from UW-Superior. Audi is looking forward to another thrilling theater season by the bay with the entire Peninsula Players family, her husband and fellow company member, Scott, and their son, Conor.

DANIELLE KAPOLNEK Development and Events Coordinator

Danielle is thrilled to be joining Peninsula Players for her fourth consecutive season! Danielle is a St. Norbert College graduate with degrees in Business Administration and Theater. She has an array of theater experience, both on and off stage as well as behind the scenes. From working as a theater technician at St. Norbert, to box office staff at Black Ensemble Theatre in Chicago, to her work here at Peninsula Players, Danielle has had the privilege of working in various, diverse theater positions with a variety of theater professionals and audiences. About the Playwright Ted Swindley (Author and Original Director) has directed and/or produced more than 200 plays for more than 20 years. Some of his outstanding directorial credits include world premieres, classics and musicals including, Carnal Knowledge, Pacific Overtures, Follies and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, along with rotating repertory projects such as Havel’s The Memorandum with Giradoux’s The Madwoman of Chaillot, Thornton Wilder’s Our Town and Les Liasions Dangereuses with The Importance of Being Earnest. Ted was named to Esquire magazine’s register of Americans for Outstanding Achievement in Arts and Letters, and was featured in Southern Living Magazine. In 2007, he was a keynote speaker at the Southwestern Theatre Conference. He was also the recipient of the Los Angeles Dramalogue Award for Outstanding Achievement in Arts and Letters, and was featured in Southern Living Magazine. The Honky Tonk Angels is his latest hit, and he has completed the trilogy with The Honky Tonk Angels Holiday Spectacular, and Bubba’s Revenge, (which all can be done independently of each other). He has just recently premiered his latest work, Bachelor Pad in New York City, and completed a Southern adaptation of The Important of Being Earnest, entitled The Importance of Bein’ Earnest, and a play, Stories My Grandmother Told Me, which had its premiere in Kansas City, Missouri, January 2008. He is an active member of the Dramatists Guild and The Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, and is a member of the Playwrights/ Directors Workshop at the famed Actors Studio in New York City.

Brian is delighted to make his Peninsula Players debut. Brian was producing artistic director of Chicago’s American Theater Company from 1997 to 2002. There, he directed more than a dozen shows including A Lie Of The Mind, Medea, American Buffalo and The Threepenny Opera. Recent credits include Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash and Always…Patsy Cline at Theatre at the Center; My Old Lady, Three Tall Women, The Winning Streak and The Gin Game, all at Apple Tree Theatre; and Always . . . Patsy Cline and All In The Timing among others at Northlight Theatre. He holds an MFA degree in writing and is the author of Meeting Dad: A Memoir.

Other credits include American Theatre Company, American Stage Theatre Company, Madison Repertory Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Company, Remains Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Trinity Repertory Theatre and the Weston Playhouse. He teaches stage management at DePaul University and is a 30-year member of Actor’s Equity Association.

Pam has designed for The Milwaukee Ballet, The Milwaukee Repertory, In Tandem Theatre, Chamber Theatre and spent six summers as the resident designer at Rocky Mountain Repertory. Recent projects include: Midnight Cry at First Stage and The Detectives Wife at Chamber Theatre. “It feeds my soul to be designing, working and kayaking in the beautiful north woods.”

JESSE GAFFNEY Properties Designer – Butler, Always…Patsy Cline

Jesse is happy to be back at Peninsula Players after designing Miracle on South Division Street last year.

She designed props in the Chicago area for five years and is a resident designer with Silk Road Rising and an artistic associate at 16th Street Theatre. She has also created props for Victory Gardens, Remy Bumppo, Lifeline, Route 66, Immediate Family, Chicago Children’s Theatre and Congo Square among others. Outside of Chicago, Jesse worked for Stages St. Louis and Arrow Rock Lyceum in Missouri, Allenberry Playhouse in Pennsylvania and Notre Dame Shakespeare in Indiana. In memory of Ralph Waite June 22, 1928 – February 13, 2014 Peninsula Player company member

Ralph Waite is instantly recognizable to many for his role as John Walton, the beloved father on the long-running series “The Waltons,” which began on television in 1971. Before that he was a member of the Peninsula Players acting company in 1963, performing in Zoo Story with Clint Kimbrough (see photo). He also directed 16 episodes during “The Waltons” nine year run on television.

Born in White Plains, New York, as the oldest of five, Waite served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1946 until 1948 and then graduated from Bucknell University, Pennsylvania.

Waite became an ordained Presbyterian minister and religious editor at Harper & Row after earning a Master’s degree from Yale University.

He dabbled in politics, running for Congress in California as a Democrat on three occasions (once in 1990 and twice in 1998); but failed to win each attempt.

Having shuttled around looking for his calling, Waite finally found his niche in the Peninsula Players summer theater season of 1963. As an actor, Waite was diverse, ranging from Shakespeare to Broadway to soap operas like “Days of Our Lives,” where he played a minister.

Waite had a long list of other television credits including Murder One, a recurring role on HBO’s Carnivale and an Emmy nomination for his role in the acclaimed TV mini-series “Roots,” for his role as Slater, the first mate of a slave ship. He played the title role in The Secret Life of John Chapman. He returned to Broadway in 1981 with The Father.

More recent theater roles included Death of a Salesman and The Gin Game. Waite was a recurring character on both “Bones” and “NCIS,” playing father figures to main characters.

Members of the Players’ company congratulate Jessie on receiving the Tony award in the category of Leading Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Carole King in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. Jessie also received the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical.

The Kathryn A. Doerr Apprentice Fund Established in 2013 in memory of Kathryn A. Doerr (Katie), by her family, this fund provides critical support for Peninsula Players apprentice program.

During her lifetime, Katie was an advocate and supporter of art education, notably to art education in the Door County community she loved. Her legacy will provide scholarships for two apprentices during the Players season.

This season’s interns supported by the Kathryn A. Doerr Apprentice Fund are Larissa Petersen and Shannon Golden. Shannon is focusing her career goals on stage management and Larissa on arts management, both respected fields in the theater community.

Peninsula Players A Theatre in a Garden Take a rustic, woodsy site outfitted with a few little cabins that once served a boys camp along the bay. Add a dream, a barn-like proscenium stagehouse and a hundred or so seats open to the stars above and you have the early days of Peninsula Players.

Richard and Caroline Fisher, a young novice brother-and-sister team, started the troupe in 1935 when they produced Noel Coward’s Hay Fever at a site behind the former Bonnie Brook Cottage/Motel in Fish Creek, now the Fish Creek Town Park. By 1937 they realized the ensemble had outgrown the motel site so they purchased the 22acre Wildwood Boys Camp, the present site of the theater.

Now, in its 79th season, it is no longer just a dream: we are Rain, 1947 with Caroline Fisher America’s oldest and John Behney professional resident summer theater.

In the 79 years Peninsula Players has performed at the Theatre in a Garden, more than 1,000 actors have crossed our boards. Some had their first professional experiences at the Players.

Many continued their careers in the arts, either on– or off-stage, and some have even gone onto stardom.

Although Peninsula Players began under the stars, a canvas top was draped above the audience in 1944, and in 1957 Caroline’s dream of a permanent roof came true when the open-sided pavilion was built.

In 1960, after 25 years of involvement, the Fishers sold the theater at public auction to Kenneth Carroad, a New York City attorney. Jim McKenzie was hired to oversee the Players operations as producer. He and his wife, actress Jeanne Bolan, both associated with the Players since 1947, took on the Fisher legacy.

The non-profit organization, Peninsula Players Theatre Foundation, Inc., was formed in 1962, to operate the theater, and in 1978 Carroad sold out. McKenzie became owner of the property in 1978 and continued as the company’s producer.

Anticipating significant renovation and repair to the theater pavilion and surrounding support buildings as well as the need for new production and housing facilities, McKenzie decided to sell the Bell, Book and Candle, 1957 with Harvey Korman place to the 30

Peninsula Players Theatre Foundation, Inc. in 1993. As a member of the Players Board of Directors, McKenzie continued to help preserve and improve the theater’s facilities and environment until his death in 2002.

More than a decade ago many improvements were made including actor housing and public restroom facilities, expanded and upgraded rehearsal and storage areas and a computerized box office. The close of the 2005 season brought the beginning of the Players largest improvement – a new stage house and audience pavilion.

Through the generous support of many donors, benefactors and volunteers, all intent on continuing the magic of live theater for future generations, the Players built a new facility in the same foot-print of the first theater. Included are up-todate wiring, more space for actors and scenery and a redesigned space to provide b e t t e r sightlines for the audience, not to mention new comfy seats.

About Patsy Cline (1932-1963) Patsy was a legendary singer with an unforgettable emotive voice who blazed the trail alongside Kitty Wells for female singers in the country music industry. Her untimely death in 1963 in a plane crash in Camden, Tennessee, created a mystique-like reverence around her work.

Virginia “Ginny” Patterson Hensley was born September 8, 1932, in Winchester, Virginia, the first child of a 43-year-old blacksmith, Sam, and his 16-year-old bride, Hilda. Idolizing Shirley Temple, she started performing at a young age and won first prize in a children’s dance competition. When her interest turned toward music she concentrated on her voice and piano.

Patsy never learned to read music, but she taught herself to play by ear.

She began her singing career in the Baptist church choir. She left school to help pay the bills, working as a waitress at the Greyhound bus station and as a soda jerk. She also sang wherever and whenever she could, first in the big-band style of her idol, Jo Stafford, and then in country style, often wearing Western outfits sewn by her mother. Her first manager, Bill Peer, encouraged her to change her name from Ginny to Patsy and she secured a recording contract with Four Star Records in 1954.

Patsy married Gerald Cline in 1953. Three years later she met the love of her life, Charlie Dick. She eventually divorced to marry Charlie. They had two children together, Julie (1958) and Randy (1961).

Patsy recorded 17 singles between 1955 and 1960, but only one of them was a hit. “Walkin’ After Midnight” was recorded in 1956 but was not released until after Patsy’s appearance on television. Because of an exploitive deal which limited her to songs from one publishing company, she couldn’t follow up “Walkin’ After Midnight.”

The first time a large number of people saw her perform was on “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts” January 21, 1957. Watching was Louise Seger, a homemaker from Houston, Texas, who became Patsy’s number one fan and friend. Louise’s character narrates Always…Patsy Cline.

In 1960, Patsy attained a new recording contract with Decca, recorded “I Fall to Pieces” and became a member of the Grand Ole Opry. In 1961 “I Fall to Pieces” hit number one in the country charts and number 12 on the pop charts, the first of several country-pop crossovers including “Crazy,” “She’s Got You” and “Leavin’ on Your Mind.”

Patsy and her brother, Sam, were involved in a head-on car collision near her suburban home June 14, 1961. The impact sent Patsy through the windshield and nearly killed her. A large scar remained on her forehead, which impelled her to wear wigs at her public appearances.

The time is the past (circa 1957-1963) to the present. louise is sharing her memories of many years ago. like her memories, louise is timeless; stuck somewhere in the era of Patsy cline’s short but stellar career.

There will be one 15 minute intermission.

LOUIS JAY MEYERS Musician, pedal steel guitar, guitar – Always…Patsy Cline

Born and raised in Austin, Texas, Meyers has been a musician for 40 years performing live and recording on guitar, banjo and pedal steel guitar. His credits include recordings or performances with Willis Alan Ramsey, Bruce Robison, Killbilly, Bill & Bonnie Hearne, The Killer Bees, Jello Biafra, Mojo Nixon, Fastball, Michael Hearne, Tennessee Boltsmokers and many others. As a producer Meyers won the NAIRD award for Independent Reggae release in both 1987 and 1989 for his work with The Killer Bees. In the 1980s, he was a concert promoter at Austin’s legendary Liberty Lunch concert venue, and in the late 90s he was the primary talent buyer for Austin’s world famous Antone’s Nightclub. Meyers is also the co-founder, creator and former director of the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference (SXSW). Meyers directed the LMNOP Music Conference (New Orleans), Rockrgrl Music Conference (Seattle), A2A: Access to Amsterdam Conference (Amsterdam), and the Austin Music Network (AMN) before taking his current position in 2005 as executive director of the Folk Alliance International organization and conference.

CRAIG McCLELLAND Musician, acoustic and electric bass – Always…Patsy Cline

Craig is delighted to join Peninsula Players this season. Craig studied bass at LA’s Musician’s Institute and holds degrees from the University of New Mexico (BS/Music/Communication) and California State University (MA/Humanities). He is a composer as well as a performer. Craig’s works were recently featured at the UNM International Composer’s Symposium in Albuquerque, NM and the Phoenix Experimental Arts Festival. Craig may also be seen this summer playing bass, tuba, and ukulele with the Vespus Marimba Band, the Sukey Jump Band, and the Gazebo Guys. When not performing Craig most enjoys spending time with his wife, Amy, and his children, Mari and Connor.

GEORGE SAWYN Musician, guitar – Always…Patsy Cline

George has been playing guitar since 1967 and is fluent in a variety of musical styles including jazz, rock, country and classical music. After 38 years as a professional guitarist in the Chicago area, he relocated to Door County. Since then he has performed and recorded with many of the county’s best musicians, has done session work at Hans Christian’s Studio 330, and performs regularly in the Door County area as a solo guitarist.

BRUCE NEWBERN Musician, drums – Always…Patsy Cline

Bruce is happy to return as a musician for the Peninsula Players where he previously played for A Little Night Music. Bruce has more than 35 years of musical experience in bands, ensembles and pit orchestras. This summer he completed a successful season with American Folklore Theatre on percussion and guitar. Bruce teaches general and instrumental music at Saint John Bosco School in Sturgeon Bay. He and his wife, Karen, reside in Sturgeon Bay where they eagerly await the arrival of their first grandchild in October.

LYNN GUDMUNSDEN Musician, fiddle, guitar – Always…Patsy Cline

Lynn has thought of Door County as home since age five when her mom opened the Ull Butikk shop in Ephraim. This is her second time performing with the Peninsula Players. At age 15, Lynn joined Jean Janes, a piano player, and together they were the “pit orchestra” for the production Dirty Work at the Crossroads. Lynn began violin at age 9, but wanted an instrument that would accompany singing, eventually learning the ukulele and guitar. A high school graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy and classically trained, Lynn began performing folk, blues, country and bluegrass while living in Alaska many years ago. Although she has an MS degree in mathematics, music is her true passion. Currently you will find her performing throughout Door County in the David and Lynn duo and with “One Voice” a gospel trio dedicated to bringing live music to seniors across the country.

Brown Jr. relates that just before her departure to Nashville, Ray Walker of the Jordonaires told Patsy “Be careful, baby, we sure love you…” She turned her head to say, “Honey, I’ve been in two bad ones… the third one’ll either be a charm or it will kill me.”

Although her recording career lasted a brief eight years, Patsy Cline changed the course of country music. She blazed a trail for female singers, making them an integral part of the genre. She has influenced Loretta Lynn, Dottie West, Reba McEntire and many other contemporary vocalists. In 1973, 10 years after her death, she was elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Patsy was the first female solo artist to be honored in this way. As Patsy’s tombstone reads, “Death cannot kill what never dies.”

Since her death millions of records have sold, making Cline an icon at the level of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jim Reeves. In 2002 she was voted her Number One on CMT’s The 40 Greatest Women of Country Music and she ranted 46th in Rolling Stone’s 100 Greatest Singers of All Time.

In 2001 the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the National endowment for the Arts and Scholastic, Inc. created a list of 365 song to be included in Songs of the Century. A list that promotes a better understanding of America’s musical and cultural heritage. “I Fall to Pieces” was voted in at 107.

Scott is proud to return for his 18th season. Scott started his career with the Players in 1994. He returned in 1998 after finishing his graduate work at the University of Missouri – Kansas City and has been with the Players every summer since. Besides his work at the Players, Scott has worked for a number of regional and educational theaters such as St. Louis Repertory Theatre, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Webster Conservatory, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis and most recently Carroll University. Scott began a new chapter in his career in 2012 as the Technical Director for the University of Minnesota - Duluth. When he isn’t in the shop he loves spending time with his wife and Players Business Manager, Audra, and their son, Conor.

The Mystery of Irma Vep Sarah is the Properties Director at Paramount Theater in Aurora, IL and is a freelance scenic and costume designer in Chicago. Sarah worked with American Blues Theater, The Second City, Paramount Theatre, 16th Street Theater, Writers’ Theatre, Theater Wit, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Proscenium Productions and National Pastime Theater. Regionally, she designed scenery for TheaterSquared, Helen Hocker Theater and Summer Studio Theater Company. She received a Jefferson Award for costume design for Tobacco Road (American Blues Theater.) She is a proud ensemble member with American Blues Theater.

Recent projects include: props design for In the Garden with Lookingglass Theater; properties master for Lost in Yonkers, Chapatti, Tom Jones and Detroit ’67 at Northlight Theater; Saturday Night/Sunday Morning with Prologue Theater; Cheaper by the Dozen with Fox Valley Rep; 25th Annual… Spelling Bee with Griffin Theater; Collected Stories with American Blues Theater. Kristine joins the Players for her first season from Williamsburg, Virginia with a Bachelor’s degree in theater studies from Christopher Newport University. Since graduation Kristine worked mostly in carpentry, props and painting at Phoenix Theatre and Florida Studio.

Nicholas holds a BS degree in theater design and technology from the UW-La Crosse.

In the last few years he has worked at UM-Morris as well as freelancing in the midwest and Nashville, Tennessee. Recently, he served as the scene shop supervisor for his alma mater building Young Frankenstein and A Christmas Carol.

AMANDA HERRMANN Properties Designer – The Tin Woman Prop Shop Manager

Amanda is happy to be back for her third season with the Players. She is from Minnetonka, Minnesota and graduated from Ripon College with a BA degree in theater and art. Amanda is a Chicago based props master and worked with Lifeline Theatre, Lookingglass Theatre, Griffin Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Rivendell Theatre and with DePaul’s Theatre School.

Amanda is also artistic consultant with a wonderful non-profit group called She Crew, which is a journaling-to-performance program that helps young women find their voices.

Since last year, Kyle has been involved in a number of productions in the Green Bay area as costume coordinator, designer, and makeup/hair artist. Cheri is delighted to be back for a 15th season in the box office. She was the Players PR Director in 1980 and assisted with fund raising in 1993.

Cheri worked as a reporter at the Door County Advocate for 20 years and spent two seasons as administrative assistant at American Folklore Theatre. A full-time Door County resident, Cheri hails from Milwaukee where she majored in theater and journalism at UWM.

Peninsula Players Internship Program Theater is one of the few professions where apprentices can learn from those who practice their art. The internship program at Peninsula Players Theatre is part of a tradition, which runs as deep as the roots of the theater itself. Since the Players launched its first season in 1935, interns, then called apprentices, have been given the opportunity to work side-by-side with professionals, learning the craft by observing and participating in it.

“Working in theater necessitates being well-rounded,” said Business Manager Audra Baakari Boyle. “Having experience in a professional setting helps one to communicate with one’s co-workers. Our internship program is a wonderful opportunity to find out if theater is a career you would like to pursue. The interns at Peninsula Players work with professional actors, managers and technicians for 15 weeks in all aspects of theater, making us unique among internship programs.”

The program’s diversity and atmosphere attract interns yearly from across the country. Mixing work and responsibilities, interns are offered opportunities to enhance their résumés, try different areas in theater production and make contacts with working actors, designers and managers.

Interns participating in our 2014 season came from a variety of academic programs and places in Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Colorado, Louisiana, South Carolina, Iowa and Wisconsin. Laura is thrilled to be at Peninsula Players for her first season. A native of Neenah, Wisconsin, Laura lives in the Fox Valley and divides her time between the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center Ticket Office and several community theaters including UWFox Valley, Riverside Players and Oshkosh Community Players.

Since 1935, Peninsula Players has entertained and delighted Door County audiences. “We know patrons have questions about Peninsula Players, ranging from our history to wondering about the behind-the-scenes work on shows we do,” said Audra Baakari Boyle, Business Manager. “We want to give the public an opportunity to see for themselves our work environment, so we are inviting everyone for free backstage tours.”

Those interested in a backstage tour should phone the box office to reserve a spot on a tour.

Tours will be given at 2 p.m. Sundays June 22, June 29, July 13, Aug. 3, Aug 10 and Aug 24.

“We have a set number of spots per tour, so one should call ahead and secure admission,” Baakari Boyle said.

The Players will host pre-show seminars and post-show discussions after certain performances in 2014. Audiences are invited to arrive early for special seminars on topics related to the shows or to stay after the shows and chat with the actors, designers, and directors.
