Welcome to Peninsula Players Theatre!

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the entire Peninsula Players’ company, it is my honor to wish you a very hearty welcome back after these extraordinary times. Although our 2021 season will be unlike any other season, we are thrilled to be able to entertain you once again with our top-notch professional productions.

Our staff has been extremely engaged during these challenging times. They have worked tirelessly to keep our treasured theater campus in order and have created superb informative and entertaining experiences online for your enjoyment. They have also generated proper safety protocols to ensure a safe environment as we return to live theater.

A legendary chapter at Peninsula Players Theatre will end this season, and a new one will begin. Our long-standing Artistic Director, Greg Vinkler, will be retiring as Artistic Director in September. He assures us that he will continue to be a familiar face on campus as we enjoy his acting and directing talents. For many years he has been the face of Peninsula Players Theatre, and we are incredibly grateful for his dedication and hard work. Well done, Greg!

It is my pleasure to share that the Board of Directors has enthusiastically selected Linda Fortunato as our new Artistic Director! Linda has also had a long-standing relationship with Peninsula Players where she has directed, choreographed, and acted in several productions at our theater. She also possesses great knowledge and experience necessary to lead the theater’s artistic initiatives, which complements the skill-set Managing Director Brian Kelsey brings to the organization’s business side. We highly anticipate collaborating with Linda and warmly welcome her in her new role with the Peninsula Players’ family.

Looking forward, we will be revitalizing our campaign to build greatly needed adequate housing for our company. We will also continue to upgrade various aspects of our campus and improve ever-changing technology. I am confident that the Peninsula Players’ community will help us rise to the challenge as we pursue these goals.

Peninsula Players Theatre could not continue to put on these amazing productions without you, our patrons, our hard-working staff, our generous donors, sponsors, advertisers, and all of our beloved volunteers. We believe in the value that a dynamic arts community can bring to all of us. Hi there!

We’re so happy to see you! It really does our hearts good to welcome our audiences back. We’re thrilled to be performing for you again and gathering in the same room once more, enjoying the magic that happens only in live performance.

Just once before has Peninsula Players shut down and that was during World War II. (That’s a whole ‘nother story!). But despite being shuttered, we kept very busy this past year. We produced online programming, which included weekly interviews with Players’ alumni, a review of the Players’ quixotic and fascinating history from 1935 up to 1970, six audio play readings and a slew of musical/artistic guests for your entertainment. We made sure we stayed financially afloat, and we took care of our buildings and grounds by adding some needed improvements to them during the year. So we’re ready and rarin’ to go!

In bringing our stage back to life, it was very important to us that we returned with positive and uplifting stories. Our first show, Talley’s Folly by Lanford Wilson, has been deemed “a treasure.”

(It won a Pulitzer Prize for its amazing writing.) The play, as one of the two characters describes it, is “a waltz…a no-holds-barred romantic story.” Enjoy the story of these two very human and wonderful people! Our second show, Romance In D by James Sherman, is a sweet and endearing comedy about love blossoming unexpectedly. It will lift your spirits and leave you smiling. “If you love romance, laughter and happiness, Romance In D is a must-see.” You’ll see!

Recognition of Prior Stewardship

Peninsula Players Theatre would like to acknowledge that the land on which we gather was nurtured for thousands of years before our residence in 1937. These peoples include the former Wildwood Camp for Boys, the Potawatomi Nation and other influential peoples/nations, including the Huron, Menominee, Ojibwe, Ottawa, Petun, Sauk and the Winnebago (or Ho-Chunk).

BRIAN KELSEY Managing Director

Brian celebrates his 14th season as the Peninsula Players Theatre Managing Director. He comes to Peninsula Players with a broad range of "for profit" and "not for profit" business experience, gained both in the United States and Europe, in the fields of operations, finance, marketing and public relations. Brian is engaged in the arts and tourism industries and was appointed to the Wisconsin Arts Board where he is currently vicechair as well as chair of the External Relations Committee and a member of the Strategic Planning Committee. He also serves on both the Marketing Committee and the Diversity, Equity, Accessibility & Inclusion Committee for the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. Locally, Brian serves on the board of the Peninsula Arts and Humanities Alliance (president) and the Marketing Committee of the Women’s Fund of Door County. A graduate of Marquette University with a degree in journalism, he is pleased to share his business experience in the community that raised him. As a side note, he is even more pleased to be working for the organization that gave him his first performing arts experience as a child.

Re-entry during a performance. If you must leave during the performance, please do so quietly through the nearest open house door. Re-entry, while the performance is in progress, is at the discretion of the House Manager.

Children. In general, we suggest ages seven and over attend for attention span purposes. One or more of our shows have adult themes that may be inappropriate for young children. At Peninsula Players Theatre, we generally follow the ‘school-age and up’ rule. Everyone attending must purchase a seat. Babes in arms will not be allowed in the theater. For further information regarding the age-appropriateness of any of our shows, please contact the Box Office at (920) 868-3287 or visit the play pages at www.peninsulaplayers.com.

To purchase tickets for wheelchair or limited mobility seating, we suggest calling our Box Office at (920) 868-3287. We are better able to handle special needs in person or over the phone.

GREG VINKLER Artistic Director Actor – Romance in D

Greg is delighted to have played a part in the Players' wonderful history for 33 years. Besides putting the seasons together, as well as the winter play reading series, he has directed 33 productions (including Chicago, Lombardi and The Full Monty) and performed in 51 shows. For his work with the Players, he was honored with the inaugural Door County Artist of the Year Award. Greg has performed extensively in Chicago, appearing at Chicago Shakespeare (39 productions), Goodman, Steppenwolf, Court, Writers, Northlight, Marriott Lincolnshire and Victory Gardens theaters, and has received three Joseph Jefferson Awards (12 nominations), two Artisan Awards and an After Dark Award.

Regionally he has performed at Milwaukee Rep, Paper Mill, Fulton, Pittsburgh Public and BoarsHead theaters. Greg appeared on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning revival of West Side Story and also at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Barbican Theatre in London, Vienna's English Theatre and Singapore Rep.

In Memory of James ‘Digger’ DeGroot Peninsula Players Company Member 1969 - 2020, Board Member 1983-2018 For over 50 years, Digger volunteered his time, energy and gregarious personality to Peninsula Players Theatre. Digger, affectionately titled “The Mayor of Fish Creek,” attended Green Bay West High School and attended both UW-Green Bay and Oshkosh.

His association with Peninsula Players began in 1969 when he was an apprentice and stagehand on his days off from Coast Guard duty on Plum Island. He received meals as payment while living at the theater and helping to build the scenery and park cars. “I couldn’t read a blueprint and once built a fireplace backward,” he said. Digger eventually became an acting apprentice and appeared in many plays, including Anything Goes, 6 RMS RIV VU and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Digger worked alongside steadfast Players such as Joseph Bell, Carle Benson, Jeanne Bolan, Vicki Childers, Dennis Kennedy, Jeannette Leahy, James B. McKenzie, Jean Sincere, Francesca Zambello and more. In 1978 he bought the Feedbag Gourmet Drive-In near Peninsula State Park’s entrance in Fish Creek and renamed it Digger’s. “My acting buddies thought it was great,” Digger shared with the Peninsula Pulse. “It was a ‘real job,’ and my name was up in lights.” Digger’s became known as the Sardi's of Fish Creek when autographed photos of actors who graced local stages adorned its walls.

Digger is dearly missed by his best friend and wife, JoDee DeGroot; daughter, Kelly Smith (Bill Krohn); grandson, Nate Smith (Edith Garcia); siblings-in-law, Mary (Alex) Siefert and Sue (Paul) Kopf; nephew, Fred Kopf; niece, KaDee (Steve) Callahan; great-niece, Sara Kopf; and many dear friends.

Everyone at Peninsula Players Theatre will miss his pearls of wisdom and will be forever grateful for his generous service on the Board, especially when serving as Treasurer during the construction of the new stage house and audience pavilion. We are exceptionally thankful for his uplifting spirit, encouragement, gleeful sense of humor and unwavering support of all things Peninsula Players.

In Memory of Pete Schuster…

We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.

How did you know Pete? As a Door County native and graphic artist, Pete seemed to know everyone. Pete’s warm smile, friendly manner and natural curiosity led to many engaging conversations, making friends of strangers. Pete was more than a friend of the theater, he was part of our extended family. His generosity of spirit mirrored his enthusiasm for Door County arts and humanities organizations. He was a frequent volunteer and encouraged others to do the same.

Pete’s generous spirit to help his community was instrumental in co-founding the theater’s “Broom Squad.” This group of volunteers donates their time the Saturday before Mother’s Day each spring to assist in preparing the grounds, theater and dorm rooms for the new season. To start a season without Pete by our side will always feel as though someone is missing. In Pete’s honor, we will be renaming the Broom Squad to the Pete Schuster Memorial Broom Squad. We miss you, Pete, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Linda’s Peninsula Players Theatre credits over 17 seasons include acting in A Real Lulu, The Importance of Being Earnest, Wait Until Dark, Noises Off, The Woman in Black; directing Ghost the Musical, Living on Love, Lend Me a Tenor, And Then There Were None, Once a Ponzi Time, The Nerd, The Fox On the Fairway; and choreographing Chicago, A Little Night Music and Cabaret. Linda was previously the artistic director of Theatre at the Center in Munster, Indiana, where she directed Cabaret, Big River, The Tin Woman, Steel Magnolias and a dozen other shows as director, choreographer or actor. Other credits include work with Marriott Theatre, Drury Lane Oakbrook, BoHo Theatre, American Players Theatre, and teaching in the theatre departments of both Loyola University and Columbia College Chicago.

In Memory of Robert Kayser Master Gardener / Groundskeeper / Bartender 1985 to 2014

Bob was a Milwaukee native whose love of the arts and nature drew him to Door County after his military service. As a leather and ceramic artist, he deeply appreciated the natural beauty of the area. Lillian, Bob’s mother, instilled in him a love of gardening, which, in turn, inspired him to volunteer his time to help tend Peninsula Players Theatre’s gardens when he first moved to the area. In 1985, he accepted the position of Master Gardener at the theater to oversee the care of its many flower beds, buildings and grounds. Bob was a rugged individual who lived life to the fullest; he was the first to arrive at the theater and the last to leave at the end of the season.

Over his four decades of service, thousands of patrons enjoyed his handiwork, whether by taking in the beauty of the foliage he cared for, enjoying a cocktail he mixed as bartender at the Luna Bar or relaxing around the bonfire he lit for each intermission. One of his beloved dogs, Godot, Rusty or Trixie, was always by his side as Bob went about his day.

Bob was a storyteller, avid collector and plant enthusiast who was always willing to swap cuttings, tall tales or out-of-state newspapers. Bob loved the theater and its many company members. A cabin he built is still used today for housing and much of the stonework around the property received his attention, as did the former stone pond in the far garden.

Bob is missed by his many friends in the Door County community; his two brothers, Tom (Janet) Kayser of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Terry (CeCeile) Kayser of St. Paul, Minnesota; niece, Cynthia; nephew, Erik; and numerous cousins, great-nephews, great-nieces and his fellow company members.

His friends and Peninsula Players Alumni cherished the syrup he tapped from the maple trees around his former school house home studio and his homemade bread. Generations of theatergoers appreciated his efforts in arranging the statuary and cultivating the theater’s many gardens filled with false foxgloves, trilliums, violets, begonias, hostas, vinca, ferns, bleeding hearts, daylilies, impatiens and his beloved peonies. Love and Be Loved.

PENINSULA PLAYERS AWARDS LOCAL STUDENTS

Peninsula Players Theatre Scholarship

Peninsula Players Theatre is pleased to announce its 2021 Peninsula Players Theatre Scholarship recipients. The theater and its Board of Directors created this annual award to foster the career path and arts education of graduating high school seniors across Door County in the performing arts.

Peninsula Players Theatre and the National Standards for Arts Education agree that the arts are an inseparable part of education and the human journey.

Arts education extends beyond academics; students show increased self-confidence and selfunderstanding, enhanced communication skills and improved cognition.

“The arts are such a critical part of a student’s overall education as well as continued personal development,” said Peninsula Players Managing Director Brian Kelsey. “It is with great pride that we reward and encourage the development of careers in the performing arts.”

The 2021 scholarship recipients are from top left Isabella Dippel, of Sturgeon Bay High School; Lexie Henkel, of Gibraltar High School; and Brady Tooley, of Southern Door High School. Each student has demonstrated a high level of participation and creativity in the arts, including drama, music or choral, during their academic careers. One $500 scholarship was available to a student at each of the five Door County high schools for a total of $2,500. There were no scholarship applicants from Sevastopol nor Washington Island high schools in 2021.

“We depend on the arts to carry us toward the fullness of our humanity,” said the National Standards for Arts Education. “We value them for themselves, and because we do, we believe knowing and practicing them is fundamental to the healthy development of our children’s minds and spirits. That is why, in any civilization - ours included - the arts are inseparable from the very meaning of the term ‘education.’

We know from long experience that no one can claim to be truly educated who lacks basic knowledge and skills in the arts.”

NEIL BROOKSHIRE Actor – Romance in D

Neil’s previous work with Peninsula Players Theatre includes A Trick of the Light, A Murder is Announced, Silent Sky, Miss Holmes and The 39 Steps. A Wyoming native, Neil earned a BA from Boise State University and an MFA in Acting from Northern Illinois University. Other theater credits: Great Lakes Theater, Company of Fools, Boise Contemporary Theater, Idaho Dance Theatre, Opera Idaho, Seattle Novyi Theatre, People's Light, Cadence Theatre Company, Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, Door Shakespeare, Renaissance Theaterworks, and 10 seasons with the Idaho Shakespeare Festival. His screen work includes the features "The Pact" and "Coming Up for Air." Neil also writes and produces short films and audio plays.

CASSANDRA BISSELL Actor – Romance in D

Cassandra could not be happier that her first step back on a stage after 18 months is at Peninsula Players Theatre where she has appeared in 17 productions since 2003. In Wisconsin, she has performed for Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Renaissance Theaterworks and Next Act. Judy Blue last appeared at Peninsula Players in the new play, The Actuary.

A veteran of many national tours, her Chicago credits include Romeo and Juliet, Richard III, The Winter's Tale (Chicago Shakespeare Theater); Blind Date, Talking Pictures, House and Garden, A Little Night Music, Franks Home (Goodman Theatre); Gary, The Way West (Steppenwolf); and The Man Who Came to Dinner (Drury Lane Theatre). She has performed at Writers Theatre, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Dramatists, CollaborAction, Theatre at the Center and Apple Tree, among others. This marks David’s 13th season and 26th production with Peninsula Players Theatre. David previously directed Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound and Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap for the company. Broadway and National Tours include Thou Shalt Not (Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts on Broadway) and Scrooge with Richard Chamberlain (National Tour). About the Playwrights ...

LANFORD WILSON (1937-2010) Playwright – Talley's Folly

Lanford Wilson was born in Lebanon, Missouri, and became a pioneer of the Off-Off-Broadway and regional theater movements. He moved to New York in 1962, after attending schools in Missouri, San Diego and Chicago, and began experimenting with overlapping dialogue in the one-act plays he produced in coffeehouses and church basements. He became a protégé of the distinguished playwright Edward Albee, and used his own life experience for the basis of his plays. In 1969, he co-founded the Circle Repertory Company, which operated in Greenwich Village until 1996. The Circle became Playwright Lanford Wilson one of New York’s most important on the set of the Broadway off-Broadway theatres producing production of the play Fifth works by Wilson, Sam Shepard, Of July. Talley’s Folly earned Wilson the 1980 Pulitzer Prize for drama. Talley’s Folly was an installment in an eventual trilogy including Talley & Son, which was set on the same day in 1944, and Fifth Of July, which picks up the family’s story in 1977. “I want people to see – and to read – my plays and to say: ‘That is what it was like living in that place at that time,’” Wilson said in a 2002 interview with The New York Times. “’People haven’t changed a damn bit. We can recognize everyone.’” He received the Artistic Achievement Award from the New York Innovative Theatre Awards in 2010 and received the PEN/Laura PELS International Foundation for Theater Award as a master American dramatist. He was nominated for three Tony Awards and has won a Drama Desk Award and five Obie Awards.

JAMES SHERMAN Playwright – Romance in D

James Sherman began his professional career as a writer and performer with The Second City in Chicago and received an M.F.A. degree from Brandeis University. Since 1986, he has been a Playwright in Residence at the Tony Awardwinning Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago, and he is currently a member of the Victory Gardens Playwrights Ensemble. Beau Jest was the most successful play in the theater’s 27-year history. It

By James Sherman played for one year in Chicago and A charming romantic comedy then played for two and a half years off-Broadway in New York. Beau Jest, Magic Time, The God Of Isaac, Mr. 80%, Jest A Second!, and Romance In D have been published and produced by theatres throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, South America, England, Germany, Austria, Turkey, South Africa, Australia and Korea. His newer works include Half And Half and Relatively Close. James has been a teacher of playwrighting and acting on the faculties of The Second City Training Center, Chicago Dramatists Workshop, and Victory Gardens Theater. He was a visiting professor for the spring ’01 semester in Seoul, South Korea, at the Korean National University of the Arts.

Joe is excited to return for his third season at Peninsula Players Theatre. He has spent the last 22 years working professionally as a sound designer, engineer, and educator. His work has been heard in Chicago (TUTA, A Red Orchid, Mary-Arrchie, Emerald City, and many, many more), New York (59E59, OffBroadway), Los Angeles (REDCAT at the Disney Concert Hall), McCarter Theatre Center (Princeton, New Jersey), The Clarence Brown Theatre (Knoxville, Tennessee), Great Lakes Theatre (Cleveland, Ohio), and the Idaho, Lake Tahoe, and Illinois Shakespeare Festivals. Joe is an artistic associate with TUTA Theatre, Chicago. Joe served as the sound engineer for the Chicago production of the Tony Award-winning musical Million Dollar Quartet. He is currently on faculty at Ball State University. Member, USA 829.

STEPHEN ROY WHITE Lighting Designer – Talley’s Folly, Romance in D

Steve is a faculty member at UW-Milwaukee. Kärin has designed costumes for more than 48 productions in her 20 seasons at Peninsula Players Theatre.

She has received the Joseph Jefferson Award, AriZoni Award and a Prague Quadrennial nomination for her costume designs for Regional Theatre Tony Award winners American Conservatory Theater, Chicago Shakespeare, Goodman, Steppenwolf, Long Wharf, Victory Gardens, Children's Theatre Company, Crossroads, Huntington and Cincinnati Playhouse, as well as the Milwaukee Rep, Skylight, First Stage and American Players. Kärin taught costume design at The Theatre School of DePaul, Northwestern and Carroll Universities and heads the costume design department at Lawrence University. She designed costumes for the feature film "Feed the Fish" with Tony Shalhoub and had the privilege to design new works for Harry Connick Jr., Stephen Schwartz and Kevin Puts' 2012 Pulitzer Prize-winning opera "Silent Night," as well as the spectacular world premiere opera The Shining, based on the Steven King novel, at Minnesota Opera this spring. AUDRA BAAKARI BOYLE Business Manager

Audi is very grateful to see artists and patrons returning to the theater, a place she has called home for 27 seasons. Audi served as the Box Office Manager and Public Relations Director before she was appointed Business Manager. She served as Assistant Sales Manager at The New Theatre Restaurant in Kansas City, Kansas, and as Business Manager for the theater department of the University Arkansas-Fayetteville. She earned a BFA degree in technical theater, an MA in theater history and public relations and certificates in human resources and non-profit administration from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Audi spends the off-season in Superior, Wisconsin, with her husband Scott and son Conor and is very thankful to be reunited with her entire Players' family.

DANIELLE SZMANDA Development Director

Danielle is thrilled to be celebrating her 11th season with Peninsula Players Theatre and her 9th in the development position. She is a native of the Chicagoland area and a proud alumna of St. Norbert College, earning a BA in Business Administration and Theatre Studies. Danielle spent her early career between box office and production positions in Chicago before joining the Peninsula Players team full-time. She resides in the Milwaukee area with her husband, Jason, and her sons, Louis and Martin. Danielle is excited for another year of raising funds for this theater she loves so dearly.

CODY WESTGAARD Production Manager

Cody is thrilled to join Peninsula Players Theatre for his fifth season. Assistant stage manager for 42nd Street, White Christmas, Saturday Night Fever and Hazel at Drury Lane Theatre, Mamma Mia! at Paramount Theater, and The Joseph Jefferson Awards (2006 – 2017). His other credits include Assistant Production Manager (APM) at NYU Tisch School of the Arts Department of Drama (2011 2015), APM at Williamstown Theatre Festival (2009 – 2011), PM at Noble Fool Theatricals (2007 – 2008). Cody also works for MACE (Movement and Combat Education) as the Operations Manager and co-creates the Stage Management Intensive. Cody earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre at Loyola University Chicago and a Master of Fine Arts in Production Technology and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. He is a proud member of the Actors’ Equity Association.

AIDAN SYLVIUS-DOWE Costume Designer – Talley's Folly

Aidan is thrilled to be back on this side of the pond and working at Peninsula Players Theatre for the first time.

He has previously collaborated closely with Talley’s Folly director David New on Sleuth at Court Theatre. A U.K. citizen, he is the resident Costume Designer at the Alias Theatre Company in Twickenham-on-Tweed.

Some favorite productions for that company have included Harvey, Witness for the Prosecution, Bunbury, The Changeling, An Inspector Calls, Martin Guerre, Hobbes, and most recently Catfish! the Musical.

NATHAN ANGRICK Technical Director

Nate is delighted to return to Peninsula Players Theatre for his third season as Technical Director. Nate was born in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, and graduated from UW-Stevens Point with a BFA in Technical Theater and Design. After working as technical director for the Plimoth Players and Payomet PAC in Massachusetts, he worked as a scenic carpenter at The Juilliard School in New York City. Nate is going into his third year at the Yale School of Drama to obtain his MFA in Technical Direction and Production.

JENNIFER WERNAU Properties Shop Manager

Jennifer is a freelance properties designer in Chicago, originally from New York, and this is her second season with Peninsula Players and is excited to be here. In Chicago, she works for companies such as Porchlight Music Theatre and Metropolis Theatre in Arlington Heights and many storefront theaters such as The New Colony and The Factory. Past productions include Sunset Boulevard, Gypsy (Porchlight Theatre), Darkness After Dawn (Factory Theatre), HOODED, or being black for dummies (First Floor Theatre), The Arc Trials (Mudlark Theater Company), Small World (The New Colony) Cardboard Piano (Timeline Theater) and Anything Goes, A Christmas Carol (Metropolis Theatre).

CHARITY STUMP Assistant Box Office Manager

Charity is a recent graduate of York College of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Arts in Theater and a minor in Arts Administration. For two years, she worked as an audience service representative at the college theater, and during her senior year, she served as a marketing intern for the Cultural Alliance of York County. After discovering her passion for arts administration in college, Charity is thrilled to begin her professional work with Peninsula Players Theatre.

EMILY POULL Assistant Box Office Manager

Emily is a student from UW-Platteville and will be completing her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration- Management, with a minor in creative writing, in December 2021. Emily has always enjoyed the performing arts and has travelled nationwide to participate in choral conferences and competitions. This is Emily’s first season with Peninsula Players Theatre and she is thrilled to have found a position that combines her passion for business, the arts, and Door County.

MARK FORTUNATO Master Electrician

Mark holds a BFA in Lighting Design from Boston University and frequently enjoys working on the technical side of lighting. He considers himself a multidisciplinary artist in such subjects as 3D modeling and printing, playwriting and installation art. Mark likes to consider his work in theater not as the defining trait of his artistic identity but a home in which he constantly explores new mediums. www.mbf.design

BECCA STOCKHAUSE Carpenter

Becca is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Duluth and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in technical theatre. Becca participated in the internship program at Peninsula Players Theatre in the summer of 2019 and is excited to return for another season by the bay!

Peninsula Players’ interns wanted for 2022

Peninsula Players Theatre's internship program remains on its extended intermission this season, and we deeply miss the youthful exuberance and energy these crafts people/artisans/college students bring with them each season. No production or administrative interns were hired this season for various reasons, including the limited number of private quarters on our artistic campus. Our mission remains to foster future theater artisans, and we actively engaged former production interns as carpenters and recent college graduates to fill our staff positions this year.

If you missed being greeted by one of our hard-working interns in either the parking lot, Box Office, theater or will-call window this year, just know we miss them too! Not only do each of the interns work these nightly duties but they also help to run the shows in such areas as lighting, properties, sound, costumes, house management, assistant stage management and concessions. During the day they also work in these areas for the next show. Their absence is felt by each and every company member and department of our theater, from their specialized production skills to their warm smiles, unique personalities and deep enthusiasm for theater.

Theater is one of the few professions where apprentices can learn from those who practice their art. The internship program at Peninsula Players Theatre is part of a tradition which runs as deep as the roots of the theater itself. Since the Peninsula Players launched its first season in 1935, interns, then called apprentices, have been given the opportunity to work side-by-side with professionals, learning the craft by observing and participating in it.

Gaining experience in a professional setting, such as with the Peninsula Players, develops communication skills, provides hands-on training and builds networking opportunities with working professionals. Participants in the internship program work with the theater’s professional actors, managers and technicians for 14 to 20 weeks in all facets of theater, from backstage to front office, making the Peninsula Players Internship Program unique among theater programs.

The program’s diversity and atmosphere attracts applicants from across the country. Mixing responsibilities, interns are offered opportunities to enhance their résumés and make contacts with working actors, designers and managers.

The Kathryn A. Doerr Apprentice Fund

Established in 2013 in memory of Kathryn A. Doerr (Katie), by her family, this fund provides critical support for the Peninsula Players apprentice program. During her lifetime, Katie was an advocate and supporter of art education, notably to art education in the Door County community she loved. Her legacy will provide scholarships for three apprentices during the Players' season.

MARIE WELTER Carpenter

Marie is happy to return to Peninsula Players Theatre for her second season. In 2017, she was a production intern who happily crafted various items for all the shows, including snowballs for Almost, Maine. She returned to Colorado, her home state, to finish an associate’s degree in theater production while working various jobs in her field of study. Marie returned to Wisconsin and attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She graduated in December of 2020 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. When not building sets, Marie enjoys hiking, reading and spending time with her cat.

KEIRA JACOBS Carpenter

Keira is a carpenter and stagehand living and working in the Chicago area. She has worked as a Master Carpenter with Lookingglass Theatre Company and North Central College, and as Assistant Technical Director with Chicago Opera Theater. At Northwestern University, she was a welder, and with the Goodman Theatre, Keira was a stagehand and performer flying operator. Keira first joined Peninsula Players Theatre as a production intern in 2014 and returned for the 2015 through 2018 seasons as a carpenter. She spends most of her spare time reading, listening to podcasts about Dungeons & Dragons and hanging out with her pet hamster, Jellybean.

KELLYN GAGNER Costume Shop Manager

Kellyn assisted in stitching costumes for the 2019 Peninsula Players Theatre production of Silent Sky and is delighted to join the theater for her first season of play. She studied English literature and art at Lawrence University but found her home in the costume shop. Recent credits include the costume designer’s assistant in The Marriage of Figaro and costume designer for A Killer Party. A resident of the Fox Cities, she looks forward to joining her fellow theatre-makers in Door County.

The Play’s the Thing …

Peninsula Players Theatre's Winter Play Reading Series The Play’s the Thing is part of Peninsula Players Theatre's community outreach programming, presenting free professional play readings for the public traditionally in February, March and April.

The popular program ran virtually well into the 2020 season to engage and entertain audiences through the theater’s extended intermission.

In the winter of 2020, Peninsula Players Theatre presented its 10th year of giving play readings and opened its three-part play series with Popcorn Falls, in coordination with Door County Reads and its exploration of the novel “Virgil Wander” by Leif Enger. The play series also included Peninsula Players veteran Joseph Zettelmaier’s original work, Haunted: The Great Lakes Ghost Project.

Shortly after the play reading in March, the unthinkable happened when the worldwide health pandemic began to shutter venues and live performance spaces. The theater followed the recommendation of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) by canceling in-person events that consisted of 50 people or more, including April’s final play reading of the series.

The company’s desire to stay connected with patrons led to the launch of virtual programming through email, social media and YouTube. Under the umbrella of The Play’s the Thing, special Summer, Autumn and Holiday editions were produced to bring free audio play readings into patrons’ homes. Peninsula Players Theatre collaborated with Chicago Radio Theater and Dirt Hill Productions to produce Trifles, The Murders in the Rue Morgue and It Sounds Like a Christmas Carol, in addition to the 2021 series featuring The Dust of Death, The Thin Man and Bell, Book and Candle.

The theater created another form of virtual outreach programming through Peninsula Players Presents, in which Artistic Director Greg Vinkler took viewers behind the footlights and interviewed past company members. The program then shifted into the history series, co-hosted by Greg and Business Manager Audra Baakari Boyle.

The Play’s the Thing helped bring people together and maintain a human connection when in-person activities were not an option. The 2020 and 2021 Play’s the Thing was funded in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as generous grants from Door County Medical Center, Friends of Door County Libraries, The Shubert Foundation and operating funds of Peninsula Players Theatre.
