VHUP Client Survey

Annuallymorethan23,000palient v1�itsaremadetoVIIUP.Toasses'chent satisfactionwiththeservicesoffered,the hospiLal,duringlheIBStfouryears,has conductedyearlyclient�urveys.Theresult� areu�dtoidentifyproblemareas,determineareasofstrength,lllldtoinitiate corrections.

TheclientssurveyedrepresentedSftof clientvisitsforaonemonthperiod(ubout 1,800 VIsits); nameswerer.tndomlychosen fromeachservicelistaccordingtothe numberofcasesseentnthatpanicular senioc:.Theclientswerecalledabouta monthafterthetargetvisit.Interviewswere conductedbysocialworkersandother6 familiarwiththehospitalrouune.

Themostrecentsurveyshowedlhat 9S�oftheclienuinterviewedhadan overallfavorableimpressionofVHUP,and lhat974'1wouldrecommendthehospttalto others.ln1985,whenthelirstsurveywas conducted,894'1oftheclientsinterviewed hadafavorableimpression.

AsVHUPisateachinghospital,the client'sinitlalcontactiiwithastudent,and 979'tofthedlerusintcrviev.edfoundthe interactionwithstudentstobeS3USfactory orverysatisfactory.944'1weresadsliedor

verysatisliedwilhtheircontactwithclinicians.

In1985,16"'oftheclient�interviewed weredlssatlsfiedwiththedischargeinstructions.Dischargeproceduresthenwere strea.mllned;writteninsuuclionsarenow giventotheclierubeforethepetisreturned, andanurseisavailabletoanswerany questionsandtoexplainthecarerequired. Therece111surveyshowedthatthesatlsfac1ionratewithdischargeproceduresbad risento99%.Alsothewaitingtimefor dischargeshasbeenreducedto22minutes. Themostrecentsurveyal.looindicatedthat whilefeesarehighatVHUP(bynecessity), 86�oftheclientswereawareofthem, asubstantialimprovementfromprevious surveys.

The�urveyalsoidentifiedwhereproceduralchangeshavecreatedproblems.1n 1985.21..ortbecliml3weredissatisfied withthetelephonecommunicationssystem forappointmentsandme.�ges.Procedures werechangedandstaffwasadded,andby thesecondsurveyonly6,.;oftheclients \\eredissatisfied.However,duringthemon recentsurveyirwasfoundthatagain21ffof theclientsinterviewedwere:dissatisfiedwith telephonecommunications.Recentlythe

appomtmentseeretanesweregsvenadditionaltelephonelinestoanswer,fromthe deparlrtlentsecretaries,andthismayhave increasedthe"on-hold"Limeforclients. Thesestati�ti�alsoreflectthedilemmaof clinicians. ....ho,duetotheirvariedduties, arenotalwaysa\'81lablewhenclientsphone. Sincethesurvey,thereceptiorustshave altendedseminarsontelephonecommunications,andothersolutionsarebeingexplored aswell.

Anotherorenneedingattention isthe wailingtimepriortobeingseen.While VHUPisateachinghospitalandoftensees casesrequtrinae11rensivework-ups.stepsare beingtakentoreducethewaitinatime.One suchstephasbeenthehiringofo liaison person intheEmergencyServicetohandle progressreporuforclientswaitingtohear abouttheirpet'sconduion.Wearealso exploringlhepossibilityofmodifyingthe scheduletoreflectthehighnumberof unel!pectedlengthywork-ups.

Theannualclientsurveyprovides VHUPwathadevicetomonitorwhct.her changesrniuaredtoimprovescrvu:ereally work.Wehope.iryouarecalled,youwill participateinthesurveytoenablewto bettermeetourclients'needs.
