Message from the Chief Penn State Health continues to grow in leaps and bounds, and the Penn State Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Division is growing right along with it as central Pennsylvania’s premiere otolaryngology resource.

We are proud to announce the opening of a new Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery clinic in Lancaster on Jan 1, 2019. This will be manned by Dr. Guy Slonimsky.

Penn State Health also plans to break ground on a new acute care hospital, Penn State Health Hampden Medical Center, in early 2019, pending all necessary approvals. Located alongside Interstate 81 in Hampden Township, the new hospital will give residents of Cumberland and Perry counties and the Harrisburg region enhanced access to the high-quality, comprehensive services of Penn State Health without the drive to Hershey. Otolaryngology will be an integral part of this new hospital.

Due to a high patient demand as well as a robust collaborative atmosphere, we are forming a dedicated joint cranial base service line. This is spearheaded by Drs. Goyal, Wilson and Isildak in close collaboration with Neurosurgery and Oculoplastic surgery.

We continue to lead the area in transoral robotic surgery and have currently performed the largest series of TORS cases utilizing the Medrobotics flex system.

Our division is preparing for the 2nd Annual Penn State “The Cutting Edge – Update in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery” conference to be held in Marco Island, Fla., Jan. 17-20, 2019.

Some very significant changes will occur in our division over the coming months. Stay tuned.

As division chief, I am constantly in awe of our talented faculty, residents and dedicated staff who take care of a growing number of patients each year.

Conner Lecture Michael S. Benninger, MD, Chairman of the Head and Neck Institute at Cleveland Clinic and Professor of Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, was this year’s honorary visiting professor guest speaker for the 24th George H. Conner lecture series. He presented “How to Publish: Pearls and Considerations.” During this talk, Dr. Benninger discussed the history of modern-day research, the advent of evidence-based medicine, and pitfalls commonly encountered in research.

Dr. Benninger presented professor rounds with the faculty and residents of the Division of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He provided his personal insight on the management of laryngological issues such as subglottic stenosis, spasmodic dysphonia and management of the geriatric voice as well as that of the professional voice user. Dr. Benninger also provided a unique demonstration

of carving sialastic implants for thyroplasty, as well as interpreted video strobes for residents. His advice on these topics proved invaluable as it provided an expert opinion on how to manage various clinical scenarios which will be used when providing care for our patients. Dr. Darrin Bann presents his research on “Identification of causative mutations in two unrelated kindred with familial nonmedullary thyroid cancer using nextgeneration sequencing” at the Pennsylvania Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Annual Scientific Meeting. Highmark Walk

Otolaryngology staff and families braved the rainy weather for the Annual Highmark Walk in May. This is the 5th year completing the walk under the team name Head N Neck R Us. This year our team raised $10,624.

SimFest Drs. Tom Shokri and Vijay Patel participated in the 5th Annual Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) SimFest held at the state of the art University of Pennsylvania Medical Simulation Center. Dr. Johnathan McGinn participated as a faculty mentor. ORL SimFest uses sophisticated task trainers to teach PGY-3 residents advanced surgical skills, as well as complex simulated clinical scenarios to build team skills that they may otherwise have difficulty practicing in a clinical setting. These scenarios include approaches to the emergent airway, micro-laryngeal surgery, local flap design and augmented reality temporal bone drilling.

Welcome New Residents Dr. Allison Keane is from Montgomery County, PA. She attended Duke University where she received a BSE in biomedical engineering and a BS in economics. Graduating in 2009, she worked as a business consultant in New York City before deciding to pursue a medical career. She attended Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA for medical school. Allison’s academic, extracurricular, and research experiences in medical school led her to the field of Otolaryngology.

She was excited to join Hershey Medical Center and the Penn State Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery team for her residency training. Allison moved to central PA with her husband, Rob, and their son, Charles. In her free time, Allison enjoys spending time with her family, running and baking.

Dr. Kasra Ziai was born and spent the first two years of his life in Northern California. He completed his medical education in Azad Tehran Faculty of Medicine, Tehran, Iran. He continued to complete two years of postdoctoral research fellowship at University of California, Irvine, where he conducted research on different aspects of otology/neurotology. He further expanded his research to craniofacial reconstructive surgery. His current research focuses on the effects of iBooks on patients’ education and satisfaction after craniofacial reconstructive surgery using free flaps.

He enjoys tennis, skiing, running, weight training, hockey and traveling.

Research Resident Max Hennessy, MD is originally from Cincinnati, OH. He completed his undergraduate education at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA and graduated in 2013 with degrees in biology and economics. Following college, he spent one year working as a research assistant at the University of Cincinnati before matriculating into the Penn State College of Medicine Class of 2018. During his time in medical school, he met his wife Elise Hennessy, MD, and they were thrilled to couples-match in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Neurology at the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Dr. Hennessy is beginning his career as our research resident, and will spend a year in the lab completing basic science research before beginning the 5-year clinical portion of the Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery residency. His research interests lie in head and neck cancer, particularly the molecular basis of the diseases. During this year, he will complete projects examining the genetic nature of thyroid cancer and acute myelogenous leukemia that were started by his predecessors. Additionally, he has begun work on a new project that aims to determine how human papilloma virus (HPV) inserts itself into the human genome in head and neck cancer.

Physician in the Spotlight – Dr. May Jason May, MD joined Penn State Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery in 2012 as assistant professor of surgery.

He joined the same year Penn State Children’s Hospital opened its separate Children’s Hospital expansion. He currently serves as the director of the rapidly growing section of pediatric otolaryngology and along with Dr. Isildak serves as co-director of the pediatric cochlear implant program.

Dr. May completed his fellowship in pediatric otolaryngology at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.

He provides the full spectrum of pediatric otolaryngology care including pediatric otology which includes cochlear implantation, implantable hearing aids such as Bone Anchored Hearing Aids, and cholesteatoma and chronic ear surgery. He also provides care for children with problems involving pediatric rhinology including functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), choanal atresia repair and turbinate reduction. He also provides care for children with complex airway problems through endoscopic airway dilation and laryngotracheal reconstruction.

Along with Dr. Lighthall and Dr. Isildak, Dr. May is involved in microtia reconstruction and aural atresia repair. Finally, Dr. May provides services for more routine procedures such as bilateral myringotomy with tube insertion and tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy.

Dr. May ascribes to Dr. Bluestone’s philosophy that “the nature of a Children’s Hospital is performing procedures in more children with more complex medical problems, as well as performing more complex procedures for children in need.”

Dr. May’s passion lies in pediatric cochlear implantation, congenital hearing loss, cholesteatoma and chronic ear disease. The pediatric cochlear implant has grown dramatically since 2013 when Dr. May and Dr. Isildak became directors of the pediatric

cochlear implant program. The rapid growth in volume of pediatric otology cases along with the rapid growth of Penn State Health’s adult otology volume has led to Dr. Isildak and Dr. May founding a one-year Otology and Neurotology fellowship.

Dr. May is also very involved in the care of children with trach tube dependence and airway abnormalities.

He, along with the chief of Pediatric Pulmonology Dr. Gavin Graff, founded Penn State Health’s first multidisciplinary Pediatric Aerodigestive clinic. This clinic focuses on children with airway abnormalities and trach tube dependence in need of airway surgery for trach tube decannulation. The Pediatric Aerodigestive clinic has led to more seamless care of these complex patients through more combined airway endoscopy procedures and improved communication and care for these complex patients.

Dr. May’s research focus is on outcomes in children with pediatric airway problems, as well as focus on congenital hearing loss.

The last two years has seen Dr. May become more involved in the Otolaryngology Residency program by assisting current residency program director, Dr. Johnathan McGinn. This has led to the establishment of hands on training for the residents with airway simulation in Penn State Health’s sim lab where residents practice direct laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy in adults and children on airway mannequins.

The section of pediatric otolaryngology at Penn State Children’s Hospital has been growing rapidly. Dr. Meghan Wilson, trained at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, joined Penn State in the fall of 2017.

We are currently recruiting another 1-2 pediatric otolaryngologists for the expanding Penn State Children’s Hospital.

Alumni Profile-Benjamin Oberman, MD Catching up with former Otolaryngology Resident, Ben Oberman Dr. Ben Oberman, along with Dr. Hetal Patel, graduated from Penn State Health’s Otolaryngology program in 2016. Since that time, Ben has worked as a generalist at North Carolina Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat, a practice that has been a staple to Durham’s Otolaryngology community for 114 years. While living in “The City of Medicine,” Ben has the opportunity to work with colleagues from Duke University and University of North Carolina to keep his patients on the forefront of technological advances in our field. He regularly attends academic journal clubs, and starting in 2018, he has been

working with the Duke Physician Assistant Program, having PA students rotate through his clinic for their Otolaryngology elective. Ben enjoys the continued variety of patients and surgery, as well as providing quick access to care for his patients.

Ben and his wife, Jacquelyn spend their free time exploring food and food truck scenes in Durham and Chapel Hill, and enjoy the music and performing arts in Durham. Their family has grown with the addition of a Great Dane pup, Maisie. Ben has recently trained for a long-distance relay race from Grayson Highlands, Virginia to Asheville, NC which occurred in early September. Along with his team of nine, they ran over 200 miles in 24 hours, coursing through the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Alumni Update Congratulations to Dr. Jessyka Lighthall and her husband, Ben Latz on the birth of Piper Elizabeth on June 29, 2018. Piper weighed 6 lbs, 15 oz and was 19.5 inches long.

Student Interest Group Introductory Luncheon Penn State Otolaryngology Student Interest Group Kicks Off New Year The Otolaryngology Student Interest Group kicked off the year with its annual introductory lunch lecture given by Dr. Goldenberg. He concentrated his lecture on the many aspects of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery and focused on the many opportunities within the practice. Students were filled with awe, as well as with Chinese food. ENT SIG was able to recruit many new members during their Medical Students Society and Association Activities Fair.

The purpose of the Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Student Interest Group (ENT SIG)​is to provide interested students with an opportunity to learn what the otolaryngology field and related fellowships have to offer. ENT SIG helps students

receive early exposure to a competitive field that requires significant preparation and provides information on how to be a strong applicant. ENT SIG holds meetings and educational lunch lectures to explore the various types of surgical procedures and medical illnesses involved in Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery. Students have the opportunity to interact with faculty and arrange future shadowing and research projects. Upcoming events include lectures on ways to get involved in otolaryngology research, as well as student skills session, which includes HEENT examination techniques, airway models, suturing practice, otoscopes and more.

Penn State’s Advanced Otology Fellowship The 2018/2019 academic year is the inaugural year of the Penn State Advanced Otology Fellowship. Under the direction of Huseyin Isildak MD, Director of Otology/Neurotology, in conjunction with Jason May MD, Pediatric Otolaryngology, and Brad Zacharia MD, Neurosurgery, this fellowship is designed to train one fellow per year on advanced otologic and neurotologic techniques. Advanced training is provided in surgical cases such as stapes surgery, cochlear implantation, chronic ear disease, congenital hearing loss, dizziness/vertigo, Meniere’s disease and lateral skull base tumors (both open surgery and Gamma Knife). The inaugural fellow is Aaron Baker, MD, a graduate of Penn State College of Medicine, as well as the Penn State Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Residency.

Wagner accepted into American Balance Society Jessica Wagner, AuD, CCCA was accepted into the American Balance Society (ABS) in May 2018. ABS is an organization specifically for clinicians who have an interest in vestibular and balance sciences. The organization strives to empower health care professionals to make evidence-based, patient-centered decisions in the pursuit of improved clinical care for patients with dizziness, balance and movement disorders, as well as extend and expand the basic science knowledge of vestibular anatomy and physiology. ABS has yearly meetings to serve as an excellent platform for the discussion of case studies, cutting-edge research and clinical practice when working with patients having imbalance, dizziness or vestibular impairment.
