2021-22 IMPACT REPORT PENN STATE HILLEL

-Zeke '23
“It's important to foster Jewish community for young people. I don’t belong to a synagogue, but I can go to Hillel. It’s important to have spaces for young adult Jewish people to interact and engage with their Judaism and their peers.”

Josh was a Jewish Learning Fellow and ritual service leader this past year Josh's favorite Hillel memory was “the first time I helped lead services during Yom Kippur. I played guitar during the evening service. Getting up there with my guitar and singing, it was incredible. Being up there I knew I found a place to do what I love. Coming to college I wasn’t sure I would be able to be a song leader, being up there, on the Bima at the Pasq, let me know that I could continue to do what I love to do Bring music to services, and music to my Jewish community.”
Mike ‘23 Bowen '25 Josh ‘25 In August 2021, Mike went on a Birthright Israel trip and had a life changing experience “As a Birthright fellow I encourage the wider Penn State Jewish community to go on this once-in-a-lifetime trip.”
Bowen came to Hillel during the first Challah for Hunger bake Over coffee with a staff person, he learned that he was Jewish. "After getting involved with Challah for Hunger, I fell in love with Hillel and the people in it. I started attending services and cooking Shabbat meals I have truly come to love the friends I've made and I cherish the community very much. Hillel provides a place for me to decompress from long academic weeks and long days on the ambulance It also provides a great friend group that goes beyond the walls of Hillel."
Mike found out about Birthright through Hillel, and had a unique experience going mid pandemic in 2021 In his cohort, a modest 14 people, Mike built deep and meaningful relationships which enabled the group to get together for Hillel sponsored reunions to reminisce on their amazing experience Mike chose to be a BICEP (Birthright) fellow to help others experience a trip that changed his life.

"Onward Israel made my relationship with Judaism and Israel even stronger than it already was. I was able to really immerse myself in the culture and get a feel for Israel life."
A dozen Penn State students wrapped up their Onward Israel experience in late July. Onward Israel is an eight-week internship program in Tel Aviv, where students participate in a variety of internships and gain valuable working experience while immersing themselves in Israeli culture.
For the first time in two years, we were thrilled to send over 80 students to Israel in partnership with Birthright Israel, Perspectives, and Onward Israel We sent two full buses of Penn Staters to Israel on Birthright Israel in May and June. For many students, Birthright is their first time in Israel, and the opportunity to experience such an integral piece of their Jewish identity surrounded by other Penn Staters creates bonds that last through college and in some cases, a lifetime. Sam ‘24
Israel is an intrinsic element of the Jewish identity and experience, and Penn State Hillel is committed to introducing meaningful Israel education and experiences to the Penn State community

The trip also shapes students’ individual identities A student on this year ' s trip shared: “I’m truly grateful for not only the perspective and educational aspects of the trip but the spiritual experience as well. Prior to my arrival I was in desperate need of personal peace and I believe I gained a piece of that being here in Israel. I’ve interacted with a few people who have experienced a tremendous loss such as myself, yet those people were still able to find peace and happiness. Those individuals have touched my life in more ways than they will ever know. Though my conflict is internal, I pray for those who struggle in the country and hope they find peace and resolution as well.”
Penn State Hillel’s Perspectives Trip, a 10 day immersive trip, gives campus student leaders the opportunity to explore Israel and the Palestinian Authority to learn about the conflict and deepen their knowledge, engage in challenging conversations, and help to create an environment of dialogue on campus
Birthright Israel Onward Israel Perspectives
These students come from all different religious and ethnic backgrounds and join together to create a culture of understanding and acceptance once they return to University Park in the fall
OUR EXPERIENCES

I’m continually impressed by the students I meet and the stories I hear about their experiences and growth because of their access to our vibrant Hillel. They continually remind me that there are multiple ways with which to express their Jewish identities I appreciate our new space at Hillel that allows us to connect on a deeper level and to continue learning from one another We must embrace what we have in common—Jewish Penn State—and embrace our diversities to help each other become stronger.
I would love to thank each of you individually if given the opportunity Please do not hesitate to reach out to jill epstein@ubs com for both my NYC residents and those visiting us from afar We cannot wait to show you everything we have to offer
I am thankful for the support from each of you in the 2021 22 academic year, marking the highest number of supporters in our history! We enter the new year with the best team of students, volunteers, staff, and donors like you coming together in the Gutterman Family Center.
For decades, Penn State Hillel has been a source of support, community, and guidance for Jewish students We started humbly in a small space above a store where we served both students and the State College community. Today we are very, very proud to have officially opened our downtown location this past spring - the Gutterman Family Center for Jewish life! With this prime real estate right in the middle of downtown State College, we can take a giant leap toward reaching every single one of the estimated 5,000 Jewish students at Penn State University "I decided to become more involved with Hillel so I could grow my Jewish identity. Although Penn State offers numerous Jewish organizations including Aish, Chabad, and Hillel. I chose to become a part of Hillel because it was the most student run and student focused out of all the organizations. All of the people at Hillel have been extremely welcoming and kind. The staff at Hillel are also a big reason why I became involved.” -Jake '24

Penn State Hillel is committed to providing every student with a chance to explore their unique Jewish identities. The most impactful Jewish experiences are tailored to their individual interests. The Seders hosted in the Gutterman Family Center, apartments, and off campus houses were a celebration of the diversity and individuality of the Penn State student body. Seder ranged thematically from traditional rituals to deeper conversations about social justice and the application of Jewish values on modern issues.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME
Penn State Hillel brought students together for meaningful, in person Passover seders for the first time in two years Over 140 students celebrated this inaugural Passover with three Seders in Penn State Hillel’s new downtown space, The Gutterman Family Center for Jewish Life, as well as a Greek Seder in an off campus fraternity house. These Seders were hosted by Penn State Hillel’s own Rabbi and a committee of eight students who led the experience for their peers.
Passover has always been about gathering with family, and this Passover, Penn State Hillel was students’ home-away-from-home to celebrate the holiday.

One reason Hillel is so special to me, and hundreds of other Penn State students, is the breadth of activities and opportunities we offer. No matter a student's interest in or relationship to Judaism, there are dozens of ways to get involved and stay connected We pride ourselves on being a pluralistic community and meeting students where they are and where they want to be There is no single way to be Jewish at Penn State; never a right or wrong way. I have met students who come from all across the Jewish spectrum from growing up in observant households to never attending a holiday service before coming to Hillel Our diversity is our strength as we share with one another, learn from one another, and grow together into the next generation of active, passionate, and proud Jews
.
For me, serving on the Hillel executive board for the last three years has greatly enhanced my public speaking skills, taught me how to work more effectively in team centered environments, and sharpened my ability to plan impactful events It has also led to very special friendships that I know will last long after graduation
. It has been my great pleasure and pride to see first year students who chose to get involved with Hillel early in their college careers enjoy their experiences who will help cultivate and he Penn State Jewish y for years to come. I could re honored to serve this on and work with so many students and dedicated bers who care deeply for sity and for our shared shape the Jewish future. I it to see what this next year e for us!
