MESSAGE FROM DR. STEVE NUNEZ As I reflect on the 2021-2022 academic year, I’m extremely proud of the collective accomplishments of the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College community.

These accomplishments, too many to list here, requires the faculty, the staff, the Pennsylvania Highlands Foundation Board, and the Pennsylvania Highlands Board of Trustees to be firmly dedicated to the College’s mission and its future vision.

Faculty and staff pushed forward to accomplish many of its goals despite the lingering operational effects of COVID-19. And dare I say, we are stronger for it. Some accomplishments include: CONFERRING OVER 280 DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES. Our obvious and clear focus is supporting the academic and career goals of our students. The process of helping students reach their goals is long and complex and requires our staff and faculty to recruit and mentor students and to rigorously prepare them academically – all in support of their own personal goals of transferring to earn a bachelor’s degree or quickly entering the workforce as a highly trained employee. It is the work of the organization, not individuals, that help propel students to commencement and beyond. This is the work I am most proud of – it is the essence of what we do here.

GROWING THE COLLEGE FOUNDATION. Thanks to the leadership of Foundation Board and our staff, the College Foundation has a focused vision for the future. The College will work with the Foundation to fully fund the College Sponsored Scholarship program that provides $80,000 in financial support to recruit and retain the community’s best students.

SECURING THE POLICE ACADEMY AND USE OF FORCE TRAINING SIMULATOR. Working closely with the Greater Johnstown Career Technology Center, the transfer of the Johnstown Regional

Police Academy to Penn Highlands was completed.

To support the Police Academy and our Criminal Justice program more fully, a state-of-the-art training simulator was purchased to provide real-life situational training for a police cadet or current officer.

IMPROVING OUR FACILITIES. Our faculty and staff take great pride in maintaining our six facilities; this year we heavily invested in our facilities to modernize and improve the aesthetics of all campuses in the four-county area.

HOLDING INAUGURAL SEASONS FOR SOFTBALL, GOLF, AND ESPORTS. This year we expanded our athletic programs; this has provided even more opportunities for students to participate in collegiate athletics while earning a college credential. What I’m most proud of is that the athletic director, the coaches, and the students take academics very seriously. We recruit and support “student athletes” and I’m proud to say that these athletes are students first – they do well in their classes and graduate from the College.

As the College breaks free from the COVID-19 fog, I can see much more clearly that Penn Highlands is in a great place moving forward. Enrollment has stabilized and more substantive future projects will help the College continue to grow and support this great community of the Alleghenies.

As always, thanks to the faculty and staff of this great organization for making things happen. Of course, our jobs would be much more difficult without the support of the College’s Foundation Board and the Board of Trustees.

Thanks also to the Cambria County and Somerset County Commissioners for providing funding that supports the College and its endeavors.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES MESSAGE As we look back and celebrate another year at Pennsylvania Highlands Community College, it is important to recognize the support of so many that makes it possible to continue the good work at the College.

We appreciate the continued support of the County Commissioners and our local state and federal legislators.

Their public support of the College is greatly appreciated and necessary as we focus on the community college mission and strive, along with so many other community members and organizations, to make our communities an even greater place to live, work and play.

The Trustees continue to be pleased with the leadership of the College’s Foundation and its strategic focus to support College-Sponsored Scholarship Program with the goal of fully financing the $80,000 in annual scholarships.

Steve McAneny, a former Trustee and Board Officer, was awarded the Trustee Emeritus Award in 2022 for his outstanding accomplishments as Trustee and as a community leader. Steve was not only a strong supporter of the College as a former Trustee, but continues to support the College’s Foundation. Congratulations to Steve for being named Trustee Emeritus.

The College’s future looks bright as enrollment is improving, the regional police academy is offering classes, a culinary institute is coming to downtown Johnstown, and new programming is being developed to help with local workforce development. This is an exciting time at Penn Highlands as we better serve our communities and stakeholders across Central Pennsylvania.

The financial well-being of our students come first. Pennsylvania Highlands Community College received a total amount of $2,737,043 under HEERF Student Grant Funding, and we gave back to the students Through June 2022, a total of $2,735,000 was disbursed at seven different dates to 3,905 distinct students through the emergency financial aid grant under the HEERF program.

ACTING SECRETARY VISITS COLLEGE COLLEGE RECEIVES GRANT FOR OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES TO DISCUSS FUNDING IMPORTANCE Pennsylvania Department of Education Acting Secretary Eric Hagarty visited our Richland Campus and met with College officials, toured the facility, previewed our new use of force simulator, and discussed the benefits of the Nellie Bly Scholarship Program. Faculty members Greg Paonessa, Instructor of Computer Technology, and Mark Parfitt, Part-TIme Instructor, received a PA GOAL grant from Affordable Learning PA. The grant will create Open Educational Resources designed to relieve students from purchasing textbooks for classes in Microcomputer Applications and Business Management.

LORETTA CLAIBORNE SPEAKS TO STUDENTS IN SOMERSET

Loretta Claiborne, a celebrated athlete who was honored in 1996 with ESPN’s ESPY Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, was a guest speaker at our Somerset Center. Her life’s mission is to show that persons with intellectual and physical disabilities are equal to those without. (Aug. 2021)

ONE BOOK, ONE COMMUNITY PROGRAM CONTINUES TO THRIVE

The three day One Book, One Community Middle School Reading event brought in over 800 students and teachers from 11 different schools in attendance. This year, students read “The Magician and the Spirits” and had the opportunity to meet the author, Deborah Noyes, and participate in activities related to the book that combined actual science and critical thinking. HOMECOMING WEEK COMES BACK AFTER TAKING A YEAR OFF

Students, staff, and alumni took part in various events during Homecoming Week, which included an alumni mixer, Drive-in Night at the Silver Drive-In, Rock n’ Glow Bowling at 814 Lanes and Games, and a Parking Lot Party at our Blair Center. USE OF FORCE SIMULATOR & POLICE ACADEMY UNVEILED Pennsylvania Highlands unveiled its new, state-of-the-art use of force simulator, which resides on the lower level of the College’s Richland Campus.

This simulator recreates over 750 real world scenarios in a safe and controlled environment with varying responses to resistance. Its purpose is to put individuals into real-life, on the job scenarios for an optimal training experience.

In addition to showcasing the new use of force simulator, the transfer of the Johnstown Regional Police Academy from the Greater Johnstown Career and Technology Center to the College was completed, with the first set of classes slated for the fall.

The Regional Police Academy is a certified unit of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission (Act 120). Graduates who successfully complete the approved curriculum will be permitted to test for a Commonwealth Municipal Police Training (MPT) number, which is required of all municipal police officers in Pennsylvania. An MPT number is essential for employment in almost all basic and many related law enforcement occupations. (Feb. 2022)

careerfest held for high school students

Penn Highlands hosted its first-ever CareerFest, which allowed over 150 high school visitors from around the region to take part in an immersive experience with 12 local business leaders. CareerFest provided valuable insight into local careers and what it takes to enter the workforce. (March/April 2022)

re-accreditaton efforts MEDICAL ASSISTING PROGRAM EARNS CONTINUING ACCREDITATION

The Medical Assisting Technology (A.A.S.) associate degree program has been awarded continuing accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The Medical Assisting Technology associate degree program received its initial accreditation in 2016.

Penn Highlands’ students will benefit the most from CAAHEP accreditation. Those that graduate from Penn Highlands with a Medical Assisting Technology degree will automatically be qualified to sit for the AAMA (American Association of Medical Assistants) exam and become certified medical assistants.

CAAHEP is the largest programmatic accreditor of the health sciences profession. The organization reviews and accredits over 2,100 educational programs in 32 health science occupations. CAAHEP is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Continuing accreditation is awarded after a program has already been initially accredited and then subsequently reviewed by the Committees on Accreditation at specified intervals. Continuing accreditation remains in place until the CAAHEP Board votes otherwise, and it is not time limited.

This accomplishment is a testament to the dedication and hard work put in by our Professor of Health Professions, Gaynelle Schmieder, and the rest of our Health Professions team.

DUAL ENROLLMENT PROGRAM EARNS RE-ACCREDITATION

The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) Accreditation Commission recently granted the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Accelerated College Education (ACE) program with re-accreditation.

The Pennsylvania Highlands ACE Program has a farreaching impact, serving high school students throughout Central and Western Pennsylvania. ACE currently partners with 49 school districts throughout Pennsylvania and, over the past 10 years, has helped 10,000+ high school students earn college credits.

As the nation’s only accrediting body for these unique and impactful educational partnerships, NACEP’s standards serve as the model criteria for ensuring parity in faculty, course content, student outcomes, and support. Receiving NACEP accreditation means an institution has met the nation’s most rigorous standard in concurrent enrollment program development, management, and evaluation across multiple, multifaceted program areas.

To earn NACEP accreditation, concurrent enrollment programs conduct a self-study, document how their programs adhere to NACEP’s sixteen standards, and undergo a rigorous peer-review process conducted by a team of representatives from NACEP accredited programs as well as the NACEP Accreditation Commission.

NACEP’s accreditation is valid for five years for initial accreditation and then seven years for reaccreditation, during which time programs commit to uphold NACEP’s standards and report annually on program practices.

NEW HVAC SYSTEM WILL IMPROVE RICHLAND CAMPUS AIR QUALITY

2.1 million dollars of COVID-19 relief funding was used to provide the Richland Campus with needed upgrades to the HVAC system. The new HVAC is more efficient and will create cost savings over time due to variable speed blowers that do not run at 100 percent output. The new units provide improved air quality through the use of needlepoint bipolar ionization technology, creating a cleaner and healthier environment for our students, faculty, and staff.

GYMNASIUM RECEIVES UPGRADED LIGHTING

Equipped with a brand new LED lighting system, our gymnasium at the Richland Campus/East Hills Recreation is both brighter and more energy efficient. This upgrade will save the College $74,000 over the next 10 years.

SOMERSET GETS NEW FURNITURE FOR USABILITY AND SANITATION

Through a state grant received by Somerset County to assist with post-secondary educational opportunities, the Penn Highlands Somerset Center was gifted a furniture budget of $80,000 for much needed upgrades. Furniture was purchased for all five classrooms (desks and chairs), the student lounge, four staff offices, and a conference room.

Students are now able to thrive with flexible instructional spaces and a top-notch student study area. The new furniture is able to be more thoroughly cleaned.

BLAIR CENTER GETS EXTERIOR FACELIFT FOR VISITORS

All overgrown and unmanageable shrubbery and trees were removed and a new concrete patio/walkway was installed.

These updates provide a clear view of oncoming traffic from both directions, eliminates traffic that used the sidewalk as a driving lane, and provides a space for outdoor relaxation.

New benches and picnic tables along with some new, plants and mulch completed the space. The exterior signage was replaced with a 20 foot model for enhanced visibility. A new, interior airlock was also installed to provide the first floor area with a barrier to the weather.

PENN HIGHLANDS SPONSORS CAMBRIA COUNTY COLLEGE FAIR Pennsylvania Highlands was proud to once again sponsor the Annual Cambria County College Fair that took place in September 2021 at the Frank J. Pasquerilla Conference Center.

Approximately 750 high school students from across the region met with over 75 colleges and universities from all over the state to discuss educational and career opportunities.

The College Fair’s mission is to promote higher education and future opportunities to not only high school students and their families, but to the public as well. The Cambria County College Fair helps local community members find and discover the many educational and career opportunities that are right in their back yard.

Prior to joining Penn Highlands, Ms. Freedline spent the last nine (9) years of her career with the Conemaugh Health System as the Assistant to the President and Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer/Market President.

NEW EMPLOYER TUITION DISCOUNT PROGRAM CREATES PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE COLLEGE AND LOCAL COMPANIES

Pennsylvania Highlands Community College started an Employer Tuition Discount Program. In this program, eligible employees of participating companies will receive a 5% discount on tuition for credit classes. Companies that participate in this program must offer a tuition reimbursement to their employees of at least $500 annually.

In 2021-2022, two companies partnered with Pennsylvania Highlands to offer this tuition discount: Sheetz and JWF Industries.

Of this agreement, the CEO and President of Sheetz, Travis Sheetz, had this to say, “Every day at Sheetz, we are working to create a place where employees know that they are valued and have a chance to grow. Creating partnerships with colleges and universities is a big part of that effort and we are so proud to join with Penn Highlands Community College to bring new educational opportunities to our employees.”

COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH SUSQUEHANNA UNIVERSITY TO CREATE ACADEMIC PATHWAY

Susquehanna University and Pennsylvania Highlands Community College have partnered to make it easier for western Pennsylvania students to continue their education and earn a bachelor’s degree through a transfer agreement that will offer Penn Highlands’ graduates guaranteed admission to Susquehanna University.

Students at Penn Highlands who submit a letter of intent to attend Susquehanna University prior to completing 30 transferable credit hours will have guaranteed admission into a bachelor’s degree program with third-year (junior) status at Susquehanna University upon completion of an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree. These students will also be eligible for a variety of academic scholarships from Susquehanna University.

COLLEGE PARTNERS WITH ROBERT MORRIS UNIVERSITY TO CREATE TRANSFER PATHWAYS

Robert Morris University signed an articulation agreement with Pennsylvania Highlands Community College to create affordable pathways for students to earn a four-year degree.

This agreement creates 26 combinations of Penn Highlands associate degree programs that will transfer seamlessly to Robert Morris Univerrsity bachelor degree programs.

Rovert Morris University majors included in the agreement are accounting, business administration, management, marketing, sport management, cinema and photography, computer and information systems, cybersecurity, criminal justice, English, writing, organizational leadership, history, economics, health sciences, psychology, and interdisciplinary studies.

Susquehanna University and Pennsylvania Highlands Community College are excited for this partnership to take effect immediately and transform the lives of many.

TEN STUDENT-ATHLETES EARN ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM HONORS

The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) announced the 2021-2022 All-Academic Teams, recognizing student-athletes across the country for their dedication in the classroom, and 10 Black Bear student-athletes made these teams.

The NJCAA All-Academic Teams are broken down into three tiers: First Team is a 4.0 GPA, Second Team is a 3.80-3.99 GPA, and Third Team is a 3.60-3.79 GPA. First Team All-Academic Team honorees included: • Emily Bittner, of Boswell (women’s volleyball) • Karli Hanik, of Windber (women’s softball) • Amber Mangus, of Johnstown (women’s softball) • Madison Wirfel, of Munster (women’s softball)

Third Team All-Academic Team honorees included: • Ethan Barkley, of Berkley Springs, WV (men’s basketball) • Maciah Holsopple, of Hollsopple (women’s softball and volleyball) • Bryce Huss, of Richland (men’s basketball) • Katie Peters, of Robinson (women’s softball) “I couldn’t be prouder of these individuals and their accomplishments,” stated Sue Brugh, Director of Student Activities and Athletics. “At Penn Highlands, our foundation is built around accomplishing academic goals first and foremost. BOWLING TEAM HAS STRONG YEAR, WOMEN TAKE HOME CONFERENCE TITLE

The Lady Black Bears Bowling Team rolled their best games of the season to capture the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference title at 814 Lanes and Games on Friday, February 18. For the first time in Penn Highlands history, the women swept all the events.

GOLF HOLDS INAUGURAL SEASON

Our men’s golf team, coached by Derek Leach, hosted its inaugural match on September 14, 2021, at the Windber Country Club. Dustin McLaughlin led the Black Bears with a 94 in the initial match.

Jenna Dagostino and Jennifer Everett claimed the women’s doubles championship to start off the tournament combining for an 868 series (167, 135, 166 and 139, 127, 134).

Jenna Dagostino continued with a 454 series (155, 153, 146) to win the singles competition.

Jenna Dagostino, Allison Gustkey, Jennifer Everett, Trinity Krouse, and Katie Graham won the teams competition to complete the trifecta.

In addition to the conference title, Jenna Dagostino finished first among women in a January match, making her the first female bowler to take first in College history, and Jennifer Everett captured the women’s singles title in the Wolfpack Invtitational Bowling Tournament.

In Quan Britt’s first season as head coach, Penn Highlands captured the Western Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference Championship. Jeremiah Mobley was named to the Region 20 All-Tournament Team.

Penn Highlands, under the direction head coach Quan Britt, ended their season with a 11-13 overall record, and the College’s second Conference Championship. Six of their losses were of four points or less.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL HAS INAUGURAL SEASON AND EARNS ACADEMIC TEAM OF THE YEAR HONORS Our women’s softball team, coached by Cory Shay, hosted its inaugural game on April 24, 2022.

The Lady Black Bears softball team collected their first victory in College history on April 28, 2022, against Westmoreland County Community College. Lauryn Calhoun picked up the historic victory and Sydney Sheredy hit the program’s first home run.

In its inaugural season, the Lady Black Bears competed in Region 20 of the National Junior College Athletic Association while obtaining a GPA of 3.43, earning them Academic Team of the Year honors.

alex ashcom GRADUATE, CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Meet Alex Ashcom, a lifelong resident of Johnstown who went on to become a first-generation college graduate at Penn Highlands Community College.

After high school, Alex planned to enter the military but was convinced by a friend to take classes at Penn Highlands. Penn Highlands proved to be an excellent transition to college life, providing him many experiences while allowing his academic interests to flourish.

It was his father’s dream to send his son to college and achieve a better life. Penn Highlands was that first step. After graduating with an associate degree in Criminal Justice, Alex went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Alex is currently the Assistant City Manager for the City of Johnstown, proving that you can go far in life without having to leave the region. It all started here at Penn Highlands Community College.

HELPING MAKE DOWNTOWN JOHNSTOWN BEAUTIFUL

Penn Highlands students, faculty, and staff enjoy giving back to the community through volunteer service. The College partnered with Discover Downtown Johnstown in September 2021 to plant fall flowers in Central Park and throughout the city.

Our Media Production students helped the Bottle Works Ethnic Arts Center by filming and producing several videos of the Ditko MiniCon event, which was held in early September 2021.

Ditko MiniCon was held in honor of Johnstown native, Steve Ditko, who is famously known for co-creating Spider-Man, Dr. Strange, and many other comic book heroes and villains.

YOUTH GET CREATIVE AT KIDS’ SUMMER CAMP

Held at our Richland Campus, the Kids’ Summer Camp was a success! Students unlocked the power of ROBLOX®️ Studio by building 3D models and creating an adventure in the ROBLOX®️ world. Student-created projects were also available to share with friends and family.

CARING FOR CUBS EDUCATION CLUB MAKES A DIFFERENCE

In October 2021, members of our Caring for Cubs Education Club volunteered to distribute food to local families with the Pittsburgh Food Bank.

Also, in October 2021 the Caring for Cubs Education Club, led by faculty member Morgan Dugan, passed out candy to over 500 kids during Discover Downtown Johnstown Partnership’s Trunk or Treat.

College employees had a great time participating in the Chernisky Classic 5K Run/Walk on July 10, 2021. 100% of proceeds benefit the Training Facility of the Cambria County Regional Firefighters Association.

TAKING PART IN THE HOMETOWN CHRISTMAS STROLL AND LIGHT UP NIGHT COLLEGE SPONSORS A FAMILY FOR CHRISTMAS

Our staff and students gave back in a big way this holiday season! Pennsylvania Highlands Community College sponsored a single parent family through Cambria County Children and Youth Services.

Pennsylvania Highlands Community College participated in the Discover Downtown Johnstown Partnership Hometown Christmas Stroll and Light Up Night in November 2021 by setting up a display outside of our Central Park Center and doing face painting.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CLUB AND STUDENTS TAKE ACTION

In honor of Read Across America Week, students from our Early Childhood Education Club and program visited kindergarten classes across the region to read and conduct literacy activities.

COLLEGE HELPS THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN VICTIMIZED

Students and staff from the Community Involvement Committee and Black Bear Ambassadors Club volunteered at the Victim Services Inc. Hope House to support victims of domestic violence and human trafficking. Volunteers sorted donations and organized the storage space so advocates can quickly get items to people in crisis.

Our Early Childhood Education Club organized card making stations at our Richland and Ebensburg locations for students to create Valentine’s Day cards. These cards were then delivered to local nursing home residents.

And, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, volunteers signed a pledge to help end domestic violence.

In October 2021, members of the Community Involvement Committee and Early Childhood Education students served meals to over 90 people at the Family Kitchen, located in downtown Johnstown.

richland campus holds family day for community Pennsylvania Highlands Community College hosted Family Day on October 2, 2021. Family Day is a free community event that was the culmination of Homecoming Week.

Nearly 150 employees, students, alumni, and community members took part in family-friendly activities such as bouncy houses (interactive inflatables), stuff-a-bear, whacka-mole, spin art, CD crafts, and more!

EBENSBURG STUDENT ACTIVITIES CLUB HOSTS MLB® JR. HOME RUN DERBY COMPETITION The Penn Highlands Community College Ebensburg Student Activities Club hosted a free Major League Baseball® Jr. Home Run Derby™ Competition for area youth in May 2022 at Carrolltown American Legion Park.

The MLB® Jr. Home Run Derby allows participants to swing for the fences in a fun and free competition. Batters have the opportunity to advance through three levels of competition, culminating at the MLB® All-Star Game. Participants competed for a chance to advance to the Regional Level.

Meet Brooke James, a first-generation college graduate who jump-started her collegiate career by completing dual enrollment courses while in high school.

She continued her studies at Penn Highlands and earned an associate degree. The credits she obtained would transfer to just about any fouryear university, but she entered the workforce instead, landing her dream job.

Brooke graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice, which was put to good use in the banking world when dealing with fraud prevention. As she looked into her future, she knew that banking is where she belonged. Not long after graduating, she was offered a full-time banking position and never looked back. Now, she is a branch manager for a local bank.

Brooke credits Pennsylvania Highlands Community College with giving her the foundation she needed for her career.

MATTHEW GAUL NAMED A 2022 NEW CENTURY SCHOLAR

Matthew Gaul (Liberal Arts & Sciences graduate) was named a 2022 New Century Transfer Scholar. He received a $2,250 scholarship.

New Century Transfer Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities, and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom.

Over 2,200 students were nominated from more than 1,200 college campuses across the country. Only one New Century Transfer Scholar is selected from each state.

“This honor is a testament to the leadership qualities exuded by Matthew Gaul,” said Dr. Steve Nunez, President of Pennsylvania Highlands Community College. “He is deserving of being named a New Century Transfer Scholar.

We are proud that Matthew represents Penn Highlands, community college students, and our region.”

COLLEGE EARNS SILVER MILITARY FRIENDLY® SCHOOL DESIGNATION

Being honored in May 2022, Pennsylvania Highlands Community College has earned the Silver Military Friendly® School designation. Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey.

Methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined

by Viqtory with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for Student Retention, Graduation, Job Placement, Loan Repayment, Persistence (Degree Advancement or Transfer), and Loan Default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

The program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa, and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

REB BROWNLEE RECEIVES EXEMPLARY SERVICE AWARD

Reb Brownlee, the College’s Director of Facilities Operations, received the Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Exemplary Service Award in August 2021 in recognition of outstanding service to the College. This award is given to only those employees dedicated to the College’s mission and has provided substantial contributions and service.

Reb thanked his crew and said the award was a reflection of their dedication and work ethic.

MEDALLION AWARDS PRESENTED TO MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS

Marketing & Communications was awarded four Medallion Awards from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR). Medallions were earned in: Electronic Viewbook (silver), Video – Long Form (silver), Website (bronze), and Novelty (bronze).

Dr. Matt Sisak, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences, was honored as one of 18 “Educators: Our Everyday Heroes” by the Margaritaville Global Brand. Nearly 2,000 nominations were received highlighting remarkable educators that changed lives and impacted communities.

Dr. Barbara Zaborowski, Dean of Library Services & Special Projects, was honored with the Arts & Letters award during the YWCA Greater Johnstown Tribute to Women ceremony.

Dr. Zaborowski was honored for her community service.

This award was given in 2020, but due to COVID-19, the ceremony was held in September 2021.

2021-2022 was an exciting year of growth. Looking back, we were able to re-start traditional fundraising, beginning with our Fall Gala. The Fall Gala was held at the Casimir Cultural Center in historic downtown Johnstown, where guests enjoyed delicious food, refreshing drinks, and unique entertainment. Our annual mini-golf Puttapalooza fundraiser was held on April Fool’s Day, but we weren’t fooling around in raising over $10,000 for the Supporting Scholars Fund. A new fundraiser was developed for our friends in the Blair County region: Sips for Scholarships.

The evening was designed for guests to sample beer, wine, and food from local vendors while raising money for local students.

We continued the tradition of our Annual Campaign, both employee and community-based, as well as the EITC program, supporting the One Book One Community program, the Student Emergency Fund, and helping raise money and support the Rolling Mill Mine Disaster historical marker. This year we also made a difference with staff and faculty development, regional center development and athletics.

Other new and exciting moments over the last year include new Board members, Nancy D’Aniello and Doug Puchko, as well as staff member, Beth Freedline, Executive Assistant to the President and Foundation. Sadly, we lost devoted Board

FOUNDATION AWARDS OVER $28,000 FOUNDATION HOSTS PUTTAPALOOZA IN ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIPS MINI-GOLF FUNDRAISER The Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Foundation distributed more than $28,000 in scholarship money to students for the 2021-2022 academic year.

These scholarships are funded by local businesses, area philanthropists, and Penn Highlands Community College Foundation fundraisers like the Fall Gala.

The College Foundation hosted the area’s most unique miniature golf event, Puttapalooza, in April 2022 at the Richland Campus. This indoor mini-golf event included an adventurous 18-hole course, food, drinks, team prizes, and a ticket auction. A record $10,200 was raised, which will directly support our students.

FOUNDATION HOSTS FALL GALA FUNDRAISER

The College Foundation hosted its first Gala since 2010 in October 2021 at the Casimir Cultural Center in historic Cambria City. Over 110 guests enjoyed a grandiose evening that featured a happy hour with heavy appetizers, a sitdown dinner, and a large array of assorted desserts catered

by Asiago’s Tuscan Italian restaurant. Attendees were entertained by a pianist, Jazz in your Face, and fire dancers throughout the evening.

PARTNERSHIP CREATES GRANTS FOR PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN STUDENTS

The College Foundation partnered with the UPMC Altoona Foundation to offer grants to Patient Care Technician students totaling $5,000.
