HELLO FROM PENN ELECTRIC RACING

Penn Electric Racing (PER) is the University of Pennsylvania’s Formula SAE Electric Team. We are focused on cultivating the next generation of talented engineers and leaders while simultaneously striving to seize the top spots at the annual Formula SAE Electric Competition.

Founded in 1978 by the Society of Automotive Engineers, Formula SAE now hosts global competitions with hundreds of teams participating worldwide. PER competes in the FSAE Electric category in North America, in which just under 100 teams from several continents participate.

This past season, over 100 team members worked diligently across our 4 subteams (Mechanical, Electrical Hardware, Electrical Software, and Operations). Together, from collaborating throughout the school year to attending competition, PER has nurtured a profound camaraderie with an unwavering spirit of unity among its members.

Our team boasts an impressive motorsport legacy, building solar cars in the 90s, gas race cars in the early 2000s, and an electric dragster and scooter in the early 2010s. Since transitioning to building electric race cars in 2013, we have become one of the most successful teams in North America, winning an impressive 39 trophies. We have even held the North American EV 0-60mph acceleration record of 2.65 seconds!

OUR LEGACY & FUTURE

This 2024-2025 season, with your support, PER will push the boundaries of electric vehicles, motorsport, and engineering through our latest project:

REVX

Penn Electric Racing has always prioritized being at the forefront of innovation among FSAE teams, and REVX will continue leading the charge. We have an incredibly ambitious team that gladly embraces technical challenges in building a fast, efficient car for competition. This year, the team will hone in on design optimization and validation, reflected in our optimization of gearbox design, vehicle dynamics simulations, board testings, and more. We are all incredibly excited for the upcoming season and are eager to achieve great feats with REVX!

Physics

[Leads] - Grayson Roberts, Peter Shen

Comprised of driven and dedicated engineers across multiple engineering disciplines, the Mechanical team is responsible for designing, manufacturing, and testing everything visually seen on the car. With years of experience and continuous efforts to recruit and train the very best talent, we are eager to push the envelope and bring an even better REVX to competition!

Electrical

[Leads] - Katie Zhang, Kenzo Sakamoto, Eric Cao

The Electrical team handles the design and integration of all the electronic control systems on the car. We are extremely proud of the high levels of design ownership and innovation in our work; we are one of the few teams that create our own custom printed circuit boards! In the coming year, we hope to challenge ourselves even further by building the most advanced, reliable, and innovative electrical system possible for REVX.

Operations

[Lead] - Rachel Xie

The Operations team is responsible for all logistics, project management, marketing, and, most importantly, our sponsorship outreach effort. We foster creative problem-solving and management for students from diverse backgrounds. In addition to supporting PER’s efforts, we ensure the maintenance of an inclusive and welcoming environment within the team. We extend our impact to the greater Philadelphia community through initiatives such as the Philly Auto Show and Philly Tech Week.

OUR GOALS FOR THE SEASON

Quantitative: Less than 185 kg of Weight & Over 100 Miles of Testing

With REV9’s ambitious weight reduction goal, we developed a faster, more agile race car of just under 200kg. REVX’s performance will be next-level with the goal of maintaining a weight less than 185kg with a refined planetary gearbox design, lightweight battery pack, and all-new aero package. We also aim to gather even more data and driver feedback through at least 100 miles of testing, enabling us to fine-tune REVX into our most optimized car thus far.

Qualitative: Design for Optimization, Reliability, and Validation

PER aims to optimize REVX design for reliable and competitive performance across a wide range of unique dynamic events. Ensuring this reliability requires design validation that will prevent critical part failure, saving us valuable time and resources. We also aim to implement our own custom Hardware In the Loop testing setup to ensure system robustness. Through this, we will meet our high standards for a thorough, comprehensive engineering process.

Recruitment of New Rookie Class Unveiling (3/29) Competition

From summer through mid-June of the following year, the PER team works diligently on the FSAE competition, progressing from design to manufacturing to testing as we strive to achieve our design and validation goals. We encourage our sponsors to stay updated on our progress and join us at our unveiling event, where we proudly showcase REVX in its final form to the community and beyond.

WHY PENN ELECTRIC RACING?

Since the start of PER, we have built long-lasting relationships with our sponsors, an integral part of our success. We pride ourselves in creating meaningful and win-win partnerships that go far beyond financial support. Given how fast-paced our one-year design and manufacturing cycle is, our development of awe-inspiring electric vehicles and right now, REVX, is simply not possible without YOUR SUPPORT.

We would like to thank our all previous 2023-2024 sponsors; we are beyond excited to strengthen our relationships and forge new partnerships with you.
